Everlasting Love(Pt19)
Joe backed away from Nick, a sense of guilt, feelings of desire raced through him. The lingering taste of Nick’s blood in his mouth, his lips soft against his. Joe glanced to the window again briefly, dropping his head, his eyes tightly closed.
“Fuck.” Rushed out between clenched teeth. He spun around and grabbed the bag full of clubs and hurled it through the air. ‘I cannot give into that sudden need.’ Joe screamed in his mind. ‘I won’t.’
Nick’s brow arched at his fast mood change. ”Mind sharing with me why you are so angry all of a sudden?”
“No!” Joe yelled. He sat down in the grass, covering his face with his hands. Willing the thoughts in his mind to go away before Nick picked up on them. “I was…I was hoping that Kyle’s blood would help him.”
Nick kept his distance from Joe. He already knew that wasn’t the only thing bothering him. “So was I Joe, but it didn’t and now we’re back to square one. We’ll keep trying until we do find one.”
“Its…I’m…” Joe flopped down on his back. “…tired…I’m so fucking tired. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m trying to be strong and hold it together for Rick, but all I want to do is crawl in that bed with him. Let go and just sleep, not think or feel anything until he’s better. I know I can’t do that though. I have to be ready when he does wake up.”
“Yes you do and you can’t let yourself fall into despair every time we fail.”
“We fail.” Joe sat up. “This coming from someone who just a few days ago wanted to give up. You are such a hypocrite Nick.” Joe huffed and flopped back down.
Nick chuckled at him. “Good, your focused again, now go pick up your clubs.”
”Fuck you, you go pick them up.”

Evelyn continued to stare at the person standing before her, slim finger incased in tight black gloves removed the hood to reveal her face.
The woman smiled warmly at Evelyn and extended her hand in greeting.
“Hello Evelyn, I’m Rachel.”
Evelyn took in her exotic beauty, hair black as night framed her flawless features, her green eyes a stark contrast to her hair. Evelyn slipped her hand into Rachel’s, who held it longer than necessary.
“I’m here to see Joseph.”
“Oh.” Evelyn found her voice, a pang of jealousy swept through her. She didn’t know where it had came from. Was it because she wanted to see Joe? She knew how Joe would react to her, and he wouldn’t hide the attraction to her.
“May I come in?” Rachel inquired, when she gathered that Evelyn wasn’t going to invite her in.
Composing herself, Evelyn stepped aside and ushered Rachel in.
Rachel stepped into the foyer and glanced around as she removed her gloves and cloak, revealing a simple red silk blouse, tucked into black dress pants. She laid the gloves on the foyer table and Evelyn took the cloak and hung it up.
Evelyn led her into the living room where everyone was talking quietly.
“Philip, what a nice surprise.” Rachel quipped upon seeing Phil.
Phil stood when she called his name. “Rachel…” he smiled as she lightly kissed his cheeks. “This is a surprise.”
Gail eyed the other woman wearily, feeling the effects she had on Phil through their bond. She poked him with her elbow as she stood up.
Phil glanced at her and saw the stern look in her eyes.
“I see you changed your mind about coming across and just as I remembered how you looked years ago.” She flashed him a warm smile.
“Yes…took me long enough to decide.” Phil tore his eyes from her. “Oh this my wife Gail.”
“Nice to meet you Gail. Keeping Philip in line I hope?”
“Yes I am.” Gail said evenly, with a hint of ‘don’t touch my husband.’
“This is Beth Manning.” Phil proceeded with the introduction.
“Beth a pleasure to meet you.” Rachel gently shook her hand, her gaze landed on Amber when she also stood. “Oh dear…this can’t possibly be little Amber.” Rachel stepped over to her, taking Amber’s hands in both of her and looking closer. “The last time I saw you, you were a little girl of 5 or 6. My, you have grown to be a stunning woman, you look so much like your mother.”
“You knew my mother?”
”Oh yes, only briefly, many years ago. I just wish that I could have gotten to know her better before her untimely passing. How are you handling your new life now that your one of us?”
”Really good actually, having grown up around vampires, it wasn’t as hard as I expected.”
”Wonderful. You must tell me more about it later.” Rachel turned back to the others. “Now where is that gorgeous Joseph?”
Evelyn bristled at her reference of Joe, she would definitely be closely watching this woman while she was here. “He’s outside, I’ll get him.”
“Rachel would you care for a drink?” Phil offered.
“Yes, that would be nice, thank you.” Rachel made herself comfortable on the end of the couch and he brought over her drink.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen you. Why the sudden visit?”
“Always were one for being up front Phil, with your questions. I don’t want to repeat anything, so lets just wait for the others shall we.”
Her response made Phil fill uneasy all of a sudden. This had something to do with Sav. Rachel or any of The Elders would not just drop by to say ‘Hi’. They kept to themselves, but watched the vampire community from a distance. Only interfered when it deemed necessary.
Evelyn strolled out the door to the railing of the patio. “Joe!” She yelled into the night.
“Something wrong.”
He’s sudden appearance caused Evelyn to step back, a soft gasp escaped her lips. “Don’t do that…I hate it.” She scolded him. She took a deep breath to gather her wits. “Nothing is wrong, we have company.”
Evelyn saw Nick land softly a few feet away. “More company.” Nick straightened his clothes and stepped toward the door, only to have Joe shove him aside.
“Ladies first.” Joe smiled.
“Yes, yes of course.” Nick swept his hand up for Evelyn to go first, followed by Joe. Nick stood there a moment trying to gage Joe’s behavior of late toward him. The ease in which they fell into conversation, no sarcastic remarks, or hateful innuendos, only on rare occasion since he woke up. His ability to stay focused on the matter at hand with Sav, when in the past Joe would fall into depression. Another thought occurred, he scanned his memory and was startled to find the signs.
“Bloody hell.” Nick murmured as he ran his hand through his hair. He would have to deal with it later, and hoped it didn’t escalate into anything more. Nick went inside to join the others and to see whom the company was.
“Rachel.” Joe stopped short and stared at her.
She stood up and sauntered over to him, kissing his cheeks, daringly close to his lips. “Hello Joseph. You’re looking handsome these days.”
“This is…is quite a...a...unexpected visit.”
“Well, I had to see for myself how my two favorite men are.” Rachel took a half step closer to him and ran her nail down the side of his face.
Joe smiled nervously and darted his eyes at Evelyn, he saw the flash of anger in hers.
Rachel was still looking at Joe when she spoke. “Nicholas.”
“Rachel.” Nick returned with the same cool tone as she displayed.
“Ok Rachel.” Phil started. “Everyone is here. Now why are you here?”
Rachel’s seductive smile for Joe didn’t go unnoticed by him as she tore her eyes from his. “Not everyone. I would like to see Richard.”
“Well he’s um…Sav is…”
”Ill.” Rachel returned her gaze to Joe. “Yes I know that.”
”How did you know?” Joe asked.
“We have eyes and ears everywhere Joe. Did you forget that?” Rachel caressed down his arm to intertwine her fingers with his. “Shall we.”
“O-ok.” Joe stammered and held her hand tight and led her upstairs.
Phil stopped at the door leading out of the living room and turned to Evelyn. “Are you coming?” he asked her.
“No. I’m not going to stand by and watch Rachel throw herself at Joe and he is practically drooling and can’t even talk.”
”Evelyn nothing has ever happened between them, I assure you.”
“Well she’s definitely wanting something to happen now.” Evelyn grabbed the glasses from the coffee table and took them to the kitchen before Phil could say anything else. Shaking his head, he went upstairs to Joe’s room. He would have to mention what Evelyn said to Joe later.
***
The thick grayish white fog swirled all around him, obscuring his vision at every turn. Eerily sounds floating with it, mumbling voices that he couldn’t make out what they were saying. He aimlessly stumbled through the fog, looking, searching for the one voice that would lead him from this dissolute place.
Sav stumbled forward and fell to the ground, white hot pain gripped his insides, burned his throat, making him cough as the liquid spewed from his mouth, then the grip of hungry. Even in this place…this place of…nothingness the agonizing pain caused him to pull his knees to his chest.
A gentle caressing touch on his face, deep soft murmuring voice, that soothed the pain. He felt strong arms around him, cool lips on his neck.
He concentrated on the voice, pulling it closer….’Joe’, a soft whisper reached out desperately.
Rachel sat on the bed beside Sav, brushing back the soft curls that draped across his closed eyes. Her hand glided down his chest, counting each rib poking through his skin, then to his concaved stomach. His clothes swallowing his painfully thin body.
“Can you help him Rachel?” came Joe’s voice when he sat down behind her.
Rachel knew he was going to ask her that before she even arrived at his home. She knew these two men, knew their history together, their eternal love for one another, one that was hard to find amongst vampires and mortal alike.
Rachel changed her position and turned so that she was facing him. Joe’s gaze remained on Sav, she could clearly see the pain on his face.
“We’ve tried everyone’s blood, he won’t accept it. Not even mine.”
Rachel glanced towards Amber, who was standing beside Phil at the foot of the bed. “Amber, I understand that you had AIDS when Rick brought you across.”
“Yes. I…I told him months before…” Amber dropped her head to stare at her hands. “…he was the only one that knew.”
“I don’t want to go into reason of how this all came about, to many painful memories.” Rachel returned her eyes to Joe.
Joe snapped his green pleading eyes back to Rachel’s. “Can you help him?” he repeated. “Give him your blood.”
Rachel cupped his cheek in her soft hand. “Mine will not help him either Joe, nor will any of The Elders. We’ve only encountered an incident like this a handful of time since this disease appeared.”
”What happened to them? Did they survive or waste away to nothing?”
“Some did, some didn’t.” Rachel saw the glimmer of hope in Joe’s eyes shine a bit brighter.
“What did you do?” Nick finally spoke up from where he sat on the other side of the bed.
Rachel took one of Joe’s hands in hers. “There is a cure, but the recove..”
”There is, but w-why did it take you so long to get here?”
“We may be everywhere watching over the Community, but sometimes the news travels slow. I came as soon as I gathered the information that I would need.”
“So what is the cure and when can we get it?” Joe’s grip tightened on her hand, he swiped the tear that ran down his face at the first sign that Sav was going to get better.
“As I was saying. There is a cure, but the recovery maybe long, it could take years for him to completely recover.”
“O-ok, we…all of us are ready for that.” Joe said looking around the room. “When do we start aan…” he stood up and started pacing. “…and tells us what to do. Whatever it takes to get him better.”
“Please everyone have a seat, while I explain what needs to be done.”
Everyone shuffled around and sat down, all except Joe, who still paced across the floor.
“Joseph…” Nick called out to get his attention. “Please sit down.”
Joe rolled his eyes and stalked back over the bed and sat down. Curious glances between Phil and Amber when Joe flopped down beside Nick.
“Shouldn’t we wait on Evelyn, I mean she’s needs to kn…” Beth spoke up for the first time.
“No.” Joe nearly shouted. “We’ve wasted enough time. So h-how do we get him better.”
Rachel glanced around the room and took a deep breath. ‘I hope they can handle this.’ She thought and took a deep breath.
