When Night Falls(Pt19)
Impatiently drumming his fingers on the table, Joe let Rebecca’s words flow through his mind. ‘Don’t let him win. Don’t let him win.’ “Well baby, he’s doing a very good job at winning.” Joe grumbled and flopped down on the couch.
‘Who the hell is doing this? What did we ever do to him, for him to have such animosity towards us that he would want us all dead?
Is that how this will eventually end?’
Joe rubbed the dryness from eyes with the heel of his hand. Pushing all those questions aside, he thought of all the places in Sheffield that he could have hidden Crystal and Lily. ‘Our old stomping ground.’
“That could be anywhere in Sheffield.” He groaned and stood up, making his way to the cockpit. “How much longer Dan?”
”Final approach, we should be landing in about 8 minutes.” Dan turned and glanced up at him, then back to the dark horizon. The runway lights stretched out in front of them. “You should be in your seat belt.”
”I’m fine. I still haven’t figured out where they could be and time is running short.” He voiced his thoughts.
“You’ll find them Joe.”
The lights of the runway came closer, until the small jet smoothly touched down. Dan maneuvered to the end and turned the jet around, heading for the hanger. The doors were already opened when they approached. Joe darted to the back and swung the door open, barely hearing Dan yell out that they would be waiting.
Joe easily dropped to the ground beside the waiting car. “Nick thought of everything.” He said and slid into the seat. Tires squealing on the slick pavement, he drove out of the hanger and airport.

Amber gently ran her fingers through Sav’s hair, as he lay down with his head in her lap. The three of them hadn’t said a word to each other since he had let them in.
“What if he doesn’t come back?” Sav finally broke the long silence.
“Even death can’t keep Joe away from you.” Evelyn told him.
Sav swung his eyes to her.
“I didn’t mean it the way it sounded Rick, but it’s true. Nothing and no one will stop Joe from returning to you and Amber.” Evelyn rose from her chair and sat on the floor in front of him. “I don’t know what kind of spell you cast on him all those years ago...”
“I don’t know any spells and I’m not a witch, they don’t exist.”
“Well…neither do vampires.” Amber gently shoved him.
“…you have.” Evelyn continued. “It’s hard for you to see the effect you have on him, because you can’t step outside yourself to see it. For those of us on the outside, we can see it. I know that Joe will not keep his promise to me, about sharing his life with you. It will be as before, you came first, not me.”
“Then why did you come across?” Sav wanted to know.
Evelyn shrugged her shoulder and looked at the floor. “A small glimmer of hope maybe, that he would love me like he does you or…” Evelyn glanced to Amber. “…your mother and…and I still love him. Joe didn’t kiss me the way he did you when he left. That’s when I realized, when he returns safely with Crystal and Lily. Joe will not be coming to me, but to the one he always returns to, lives for, would die for, forgives him for all his faults…that someone is you Rick.”
He reached out and softly caressed her cheek. “I told him he was a fool for letting you go, not fighting harder than he did.”
“Why would he? He has you, you are all he’ll ever need.” Evelyn glanced up at him, tears brimming in her eyes.
Sav pushed himself up, propping on his elbow. Leaning closer to her and barely brushed her lips with his. “You are the balance that he needs….and so do I. Don’t give up yet.” He kissed her again, harder this time. “When this is all over and this person is no longer a threat. The three of us will go away together, anywhere you want to go.”
Evelyn dropped her eyes again, smiling a bit. “Do I get to chose where we go?”
“Yes.” Sav returned her smile.
“Sounds like a great idea to me.” Amber broke in. “I think Scott and I will do the same.”
“Knock, knock.” Kyle poked his head in the door. “Am I interrupting something?”
“No, but you did miss Sav moping.” Amber giggled and pushed him up.
“I wasn’t mo…” Sav exclaimed, then clamped his mouth shut, noticing the ‘don’t even try’ it look on Amber’s face. “OK I was.”
“I always miss the best parts.” Kyle came further into the room.
Sav jumped to his feet. “How are you feeling? Is there anything I can get for you? Here…” Sav motioned to a chair. “..sit down, we can talk. We haven’t had the chance to do that since...” He stopped mid-sentence, thinking of the night he was shot. “Would you like something to drink? We keep a good selection down here, saving the trips back and forth.”
“He tends to get nervous when he’s worried about Joe too.” Evelyn stood up as soft chuckle passed her lips. “He can talk a mile a minute.”
“I do…” Sav again clamped his mouth shut, knowing that she was right.
“And turn into a shy little school boy a second later.” Amber covered her mouth to stifle her giggle.
“He definitely wasn’t shy earlier tonight.” Evelyn put in.
“Out!” Sav yelled pointing to the door. “Both of you…out. I don’t like to be the source of your amusement.” Grabbing Amber’s arm, he pulled her from the small sofa, pushing her and Evelyn toward the door.
“Watch his mood swings Kyle.” Amber smiled broadly and kissed Sav’s cheek, then ran out the door.
Sav slammed it shut behind them and turned back to Kyle. “Um…how about that drink?”
Kyle placed his hand on Sav’s arm as he passed by to stop him. “Dad, I’m fine. You sit down. I can get my own drink.”
“o..OK.” Sav nervously smiled and sat on the edge of the sofa.
Kyle poured himself a scotch and refilled Sav’s glass with blood wine, then sat in the chair beside him. “To answer your question. I’m fine, still a little sore and stiff, but other wise fine. Well…I take that back.”
”What, something wrong? Is some giving you a hard time? If they are…”
”No, no…nothing like that. Beth and I would like to go home, but Nick won’t let us, becau…”
Sav was shaking his head. “You’re not going home, not until this…this madman or whatever the hell his name is, is dead. It’s safer here, where I can protect both of you. You were almost killed once already, I can’t take that chance…"
”Dad.” Kyle tried to cut in.
“…he’s going to try it again, I just know it. I may not be there this time…”
”Dad.”
”…when he does and you get killed. No…you’re staying…”
“Dad!” Kyle almost yelled.
“What!”
“You didn’t let me finish, so shut up and let me.”
Sav nervously twisted his fingers together. “O..OK.”
“Beth and I aren’t going anywhere. Nick said the same thing you did. He also reminded me how you would react when I told you we wanted to go home. Now could you please swing your mood into something a little happier?”
Sav smiled the best he could, but it quickly faded.
“You know how I’m doing. Now I want to know how you are.”
“Well…um…Joe is blocking me, so I don’t know how he…”
“I didn’t ask about Joe.”
“I’m…fine.” Sav glanced at him, rolling his eyes at the look that Kyle was giving him. “I’m not thinking of myself right now and ‘I’m fine’ is the best answer I can give you, but…I’m scared, terrified that something will happen to him.”
“Nothing is going to happen to him or the girls.”
Sav was slowly shaking his head. “Yes there is. It..it’s hard to explain…a feeling that I keep getting, gut feeling maybe…I don’t know.”
“Have you talked to anyone about this?”
"No. They would think it was one of my moods or imagining something that isn’t there.”
“What do you mean…isn’t there?”
“I don’t know…” Sav dropped his head in his hands. “…a feeling of sorts, like the night we were about the leave, before you got here. I felt it then, threw a fit about leaving….”
”They found a bomb on the car that you were in.”
”I know!” Sav bolted from the sofa and started pacing the floor. “The day Thomas died and his funeral, it was there and…and I can feel it now.”
“You should have told someone about this. I’m going to get Nick.” Kyle stood up, getting ready to leave. “You can tell him about this and he can help you figure out what it means.”
“I already know what it means.” Sav replied softly.
“Not necessarily.” Kyle answered quickly. “Just because you felt it those other times, doesn’t mean that something will happen this time.”
“I want to believe that Kyle, it’s just…I felt it before, it was the same.”
“So you think something is going to happen to Joe?”
Sav stopped in mid-stride to meet Kyle’s eyes, he didn’t need Sav to voice his answer; he could see it in the depths of his gaze.

Joe pulled the car to a stop and got out. Holding onto the top of the door, he glanced around at his surroundings. He could clearly smell the decay of the old abandoned building in the warehouse district of Sheffield. The old spoon factory once stood here, it was demolished in the late nineteen nineties to make way for a newer warehouse. It was abandoned in the mid 2030’s and the building was left to the eliminates of the region.
Joe closed the car door and listened closely for the faint heartbeats of Crystal or Lily. Glancing up at the second floor where he thought them to be. He flew up to a broken out window and landed softly inside. The floor boards creaked under his weight and the smell of rotting wood greeted his senses, but the strong smell of homeless mortals that use this place as a shelter, was overwhelming.
Making his way out of the small room, Joe followed the sound of their heartbeats. He was somewhat relieved that he heard both of them, but the danger of the situation wasn’t over yet. He didn’t know what or who he was going to face, but he was going to get them both out…alive.
Turning the corner, he tripped over a pile of old boards and trash, the sound carried down the short hall and a few large rats scurried to hide elsewhere. Swearing under his breath, Joe wiped off his hand on his jeans, from the grimy dirt on the wall. In the darkness of the hall he could make out the stairs several feet away, that lead up to the third floor. Stopping at the first step and looking up, he listened again. They were up there. Joe could tell by the sound of their rapid heartbeats that they were afraid.
Slowly making his way upwards, he kept glancing back down, thinking that someone would rush up behind him. The steps creaked and groaned under his weight and one gave way, sending his foot through the rotted wood. Pulling it out, he continued up the stairs to emerge at the top into vast storage room.
Joe’s eyes immediately landed on Crystal at the other end. She was blindfolded, hands tied behind her back and standing under a single beam of bright light.
Joe swept his eyes around the room, to find Lily in a similar manner, but her feet were also tied.
“Lily.” Joe called out, heading straight for her.
“Joe.” Lily cried out, turning her head in the direction of his voice.
“It’s going to be alright now.” He told them, glancing over to where Crystal sat as he made his way to Lily. Then the hairs stood up on the back of his neck, seconds before the voice stopped him in his tracks.
“That’s far enough Mr. Elliott.”
