Chapter 19: Okinawa Adventures Part 1
"Mila? You ready to go?" Andy called up the stairs. She heard some rustling and then Mila's voice.
"Yeah! I'm just trying to find my sunglasses!"
"Do you want some help?" Andy placed her foot on the first stair ready to run up the stairs.
"I found them! I'll be down in a few." Mila called back.
Andy smiled and opened the front door. She grabbed the small cooler and walked out to the rental car. She opened the trunk. She placed the cooler in the trunk along with their overnight bags.
Once she was able to organize everything. She looked at the packed trunk making sure they had what they needed for their small stay at the resort. She closed the trunk and smiled, turning to see Lynn and Mila walk out of the small house they were renting.
"All set? We have about a three hour drive ahead of us." Andy said opening the car doors for them.
"I have my book, notebook, and earbuds ready to go." Mila said getting into the car. Andy chuckled and closed the door. She turned to Lynn and smiled.
"Only been here a couple of days and she's ready to see it all." Andy kissed Lynn's forehead and Lynn smiled. She got into the car, then Andy closed the passenger door. She went over to the driver side and got in.
All three were settled and Andy started the car and began the long drive to Okuma. After she was able to get onto the highway, Lynn put her hand on Andy's leg. At the same moment Andy put her hand on Lynn's stomach and smiled.
"How are you feeling today?"
"I'm okay. Been craving things I never thought I would to be honest. A lot of vegetables mostly. Like cauliflower, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes. It's weird."
"Do you two want two girls, two boys, or one of each?" Mila asked.
Andy smiled, "I honestly don't care. As long as they're healthy and happy that's all I care about."
"Same. How do you feel about being a big sister already?" Lynn asked.
Mila smiled, "I'm so excited! I can't wait to teach them everything I know!"
The couple chuckled as Mila started to go on and on about what she wanted to teach her new siblings.
"Any word on the adoption yet?" Mila asked.
"Not yet kiddo. But your case worker did say since we have guardianship of you, they might be able to speed up the process. We're here for a while, and who knows, by the time we get back it may have gone through." Andy said with a smile looking in the rear view mirror. She turned her attention back to the road and steadied her speed.
"How are you able to drive on this side of the road?! It's so weird!"
Andy let out a small laugh, "It's a little tricky but, same rules kind of apply. Only instead of miles, here they measure in kilometers."
"How long are we going to be in Okuma?" Lynn asked.
"About a week. That's what I booked the cabin for. But we can leave any time we want. I don't mind paying the early fee. When I was there when I was about thirteen, I did the mini golf, batting cages, and the beach. There's more than enough to do."
"Why am I not surprised you spent time in the batting cages." Lynn said rolling her eyes.
"What can I say? I love baseball." Andy chuckled.
"Can you teach me how to play?" Mila asked shyly.
"Of course! I brought a football, baseball gloves, a baseball, and a soccer ball. Figured I could teach you a thing or two."
Lynn shook her head and smiled. She heard her phone going off and she answered it, "Hey Hayley what's up?" She asked seeing her friend's face on her phone.
"Hey! I wanted you to be the first to know that Michael and I are officially a couple!"
"Oh my God! That's so exciting! I'm so happy for you both!" Lynn said sitting up in her seat.
"Thank you! Is Andy with you?"
"Yeah, but she's driving. Hold on I'll turn my phone so you can see her." She turned her phone so that Hayley could see Andy.
"Hey! Congratulations!" Andy said smiling but still keeping her eyes on the road.
"You Ms. Cupid made it all happen! It was so cute how he did asked me too!"
Lynn turned the phone back to her, "Okay details!"
Hayley chuckled, "Well, I thought he was taking me out to dinner. He had Brendan pick me up and he was so cute in his suit. Anyway, he drove me to Michael's house. He escorted me inside and there was rose petals and candles. Brendan left and I walked further inside and there was a nice set up on the dining table. Candles lit, two plate settings and a bottle of white wine.
Music was playing and Michael came out of the kitchen with a smile, and wearing a tux. He pulled out one of the chairs, telling me to sit down and dinner would be up shortly."
"Okay, this totally sounds like what Andy would do." She turned her head to Andy, "Did you help him with this?"
"I'm sworn to secrecy!" Andy and said with a smirk.
"Uh huh! Anyway continue!"
"Hold on! Andy! When you're not driving we are going to have a conversation! Okay, back to it! So, he comes back out with different dishes of amazing food. There was pasta Primavera, garlic bread, and a Greek salad. We started to eat and had light conversation. Once we were finished he picked up the dishes and told me to stay put. He came back with homemade creme brulee. The most AMAZING creme brulee I've ever had.
After dessert, he asked me to dance. I said yes and we ended up in his living room slow dancing. He said he had a question for me. I was so scared of what he wanted to ask. But I said okay, and he asked if I would make him the happiest man on earth and be his girlfriend. I just kissed him giving him my answer. Then, we went to his bedroom and he is SO amazing in bed!"
"Whoa! Whoa! Hey fourteen year old in the car!" Andy said.
"Oh come on! We have Sex Ed in school! I know what she's talking about!" Mila objected.
"Still! You're too young to hear details!"
"Fine! Lynn we'll talk later. So anyway, Michael and I have been official for almost a week. I couldn't wait to tell you!"
"Wait did this happen after Susan's birthday?"
Hayley nodded, "About a couple of days after. You guys were getting ready to leave and I didn't want to ruin Andy's planning. I mean we all know how she gets when things don't go according to plan."
"Oh come on! I'm not THAT bad!" Andy said taking an exit.
Lynn turned her phone towards Andy and Mila laughed seeing Hayley and Lynn's expressions. Since Andy was driving she gave them a quick look and shook her head.
"Okay, okay, I'm sorry if I like plans." She said with a chuckle.
Lynn smiled and turned her phone back to her, "So what's next for you two? Are you going to do the long distance thing or what?"
"Well I think I'm gonna stay in Virginia for a while. See where it goes. I'm not moving in with him or anything. I'm looking for apartments. Heather's been looking for a place in Nashville and I offered to give her my place. It'll still be in my name, but she'll take over the rent and everything else." Hayley explained.
"Where are you staying now?" Andy asked.
"With Shey, we're also helping Wendy with her move to Boston. I just wanted to call and tell you the good news. Have a fun trip! Can't wait to see you when you get back!" She waved and the three of them said bye to her. Lynn's screen went back to her home screen and she smiled.
"Good for them. I'm really happy for Hayley I know she was scared wanted to jump back into the dating scene." Lynn said.
Andy nodded, "I know what you mean. Her and I would talk on tour about it. I just told her when she feels ready to go ahead and do it. Plus I talked up Michael to her. Kind of perked her interest. He actually asked me how you and I handle things." She ended with a small chuckle.
"Hayley kinda asked me the same thing. I just told her to go with it and see what happens. Forget what the news is going to say. All that matters is that she's happy and don't give in to all the bull, and the rumors that may surface."
"I said the same thing to Michael. It was hard with us at first with that magazine fishing out things from my past and my exes getting in contact with them. But look at us now, better than ever." Andy smiled taking Lynn's hand in hers and kissing the back of it.
The three fell into a comfortable silence with the radio playing in the background. Mila eventually put on her earbuds and began listening to some music. Lynn leaned back a little telling Andy she was going to take a small nap, and to wake her up when they get there.
Andy nodded and smiled. She adjusted her sunglasses and settled in her seat. She looked in her rear view mirror and smiled seeing Mila slightly bobbing her head to the music she was listening to.
Returning her eyes to the road she couldn't believe she was back. Back in her favorite place in the entire world. This was the place she discovered herself. Where she made lifetime friends. The best years of her life were spent in Okinawa. It took her a long time to come back and now that she was back, she couldn't wait to share everything with her wife and soon to be daughter. She hoped they would come back at least once a year. Something she would have to talk to Lynn about.
But now that she was back she couldn't wait to visit her old schools and even though she's sure her teachers weren't there anymore. She just wanted to see if anything has changed. Also take them to the base where she used to live and showed them the basketball court where she would practice before her basketball games. That basketball court was also a place she had a horrible experience.
It was something she didn't tell Lynn yet. She just didn't know how. It was something that almost tainted this place for her, but she didn't let it bring her down. Once their week in Okuma would end. They would head to the seawall for a few days and explore the area. After that she would take them Kadena's Gate 2 Street. Show them a few shops and places she would hang out with her friends.
Then, they would head back to the States and get ready for Thanksgiving in Virginia, then, back to Boston to finally get settled. This year was almost over and it was a big whirlwind for her. From keeping her marriage to Lynn a secret, as well as the pregnancy. It was a little overwhelming for her too.
From Brian and Angel's wedding, to her parents' anniversary, their own wedding, and the adoption of Mila. It was everything coming all at once. She also had to plan her trip to London for the award thing she was nominated for. Shey was going to get more gigs within the next month and she was excited for one of her best friends.
Sure she was itching to get back to work, but she was enjoying this time with her new family. Plus with the twins coming in May. She may take on a couple of photo shoots just to keep herself busy until the twins come. But she would want to talk to Lynn about it first.
Also when they returned, Lynn, Alex, and Brian would hit the studio to finish up some tracks for their third album. While Andy was away the trio were able to hit the studio to work on their album. They hoped to have it all completed by February, and to have it released by Lynn's birthday.
Even though it seemed like a lot was still going on, they were enjoying every minute of it. Just more adventures to go on. More to explore and more to enjoy. She couldn't wait for the future and she was ready to take on anything that came her way.
****************************************************************************
"And we're here!" Andy said opening the cabin door and smiled. She let Lynn and Mila go in first. Mila was excited to see the bunk beds and climbed to the top bunk. Andy smiled and put her duffel bag down by the queen size bed.
"I know it seems a little small, but I asked for the same one I had when I was here. I'm actually surprised that not much has changed here." She said taking a look around. There was a small desk with a chair. A mini fridge, a night stand between the queen size bed and bunk beds with a small lamp on top. The ceiling fan with a small light, and a couple of windows looking out. They could see the beach out of one, and the other had a view of some of the other cabins.
They were getting settled when someone knocked on the door. Andy turned to look and she couldn't believe it. There stood a handsome man around her age with blue eyes and light blonde hair. He smiled looking at Andy taking off his sunglasses.
"When I saw your name on the reservation list I thought it was someone else, but here you are!" He said and Andy rushed up to him. The two were in a tight embrace for few minutes before pulling away from each other.
"Look at you! I can't believe it! I haven't seen you since Mrs. Nettleton's class back in the eight grade! When I heard you stayed I was surprised!" Andy said with excitement.
"Yeah, my mom extended here. Then she kept extending so I was able to stay. Sure everyone left, but a few came back. They asked if you were coming back and I told them you and I haven't been in touch for years." He explained.
"Let me introduce you." She smiled patting his shoulder and led him inside the cabin. "This is my wife Lynn. Honey this is Jordan, he and I went to middle school together."
"It's nice to meet you." Lynn said with a smile, shaking his hand and he repeated her words.
"And this is Mila, our soon to be daughter." She said as Mila came down from the top bunk. She turned and shook Jordan's hand.
"Well, nice to meet you. First time here?" He asked with a smile shaking her hand. She nodded shyly letting go of his hand and stood close to Andy.
Andy smiled and put her arm around Mila's shoulders. She looked back at Jordan and smiled, "So you work here now?"
He nodded, "Yeah, kind of help out with the maintenance around here. Did it over the summers in high school. Then, I went to college back in the States. Came back and got the job. Dude! Gary is gonna be so stoked you're here!"
"Gary's here too?!" She asked with a big smile.
"Yeah, he handles the paddle boat rentals! Dude! You gotta see him!"
Andy laughed, "We will. Is anyone else here from school?"
Jordan thought for a moment and smiled, "Kiara is here, so is Amber, oh, oh, oh, you're not gonna believe this but Ciara, and Keli too! They're here on a girl's trip. I think they're here for about two weeks. Don't tell Keli, but Matthew, and Holden are here too."
"Oh, boy hopefully they won't fight over her again." Andy said with a chuckle.
"Well, I gotta get back to it. But hey maybe when I'm done we can meet up."
"Yeah, was gonna do a fire tonight and I brought my guitar, maybe I can get everyone together and we can catch up."
"Sounds good! I might see everyone before you do, I'm sure you wanna get settled. I'll see you tonight!"
The two hugged one more time and Jordan once again said that it was nice to meet Lynn, and Mila.
"Looks like we'll hear more stories of you tonight huh?" Lynn said teasingly.
"Oooooo I can't wait!" Mila said with a smile. She rushed over to her bag and started to go through it.
"So what do we want to do first?" Andy asked.
"I want to go to the beach! Can you teach me how to throw a baseball or football or how to kick a soccer ball?!" Mila asked excitedly.
"Of course I can! Beach it is! Tomorrow how about I take you to the batting cages?" Andy asked as she and Lynn started to go through their bags as well.
"I would love that!" Mila said as she took out her one piece bathing suite.
"Wanna learn some sports today huh?" Andy asked with a smile pulling out her tank top and red and black swim trunks.
"I sure do!" Mila said.
Andy smiled and looked at Lynn, "Wanna join us?"
"I think I'll get some sun and take pictures of you two bonding." She said leaning in kissing Andy's cheek.
"Sounds like a plan." Andy smiled and gave her a small kiss on the lips, then went to the bathroom to change.
Mila looked at Lynn confused. Lynn noticed the look, "What's up sweetheart?"
"We're all women here, why is she in the bathroom to change?"
Lynn chuckled, "I think it's a respect thing for you. She did it with me for almost a year. Even after we became official. I asked her about it and she said she was just being respectful. She has a thing for respecting boundaries and stuff. I wanna say it was her upbringing."
Mila nodded and she started to get dressed into her bathing suite. Lynn smiled and started as well. They were almost done when the bathroom door opened and Andy walked out. She quickly made her way over to the queen bed and rustled through her bag and then rushed out.
Lynn chuckled, "She's either excited, or she just wants us to finish getting ready in private." She tied her bikini top and then she started to put up her hair.
"I'm glad you went back to your natural hair color. The blonde wasn't really working for you." Mila said putting some of her clothes away.
"You think so?" Lynn asked looking in the mirror. Mila came up to her and smiled.
"I know so. I kinda stalked your social medias, and ever since Andy you've seem to find your way back to you. Don't get me wrong, your last album was amazing! But I could feel the pain and the heartbreak you went through. You should do a duet with Andy!" Mila finished excitedly.
Lynn chuckled and put her arm around Mila, "I'll think about it. Now come on let's get some sunscreen on and get on that beach!"
"Yes please!" Mila said with a smile.
Meanwhile Andy was outside looking for the football, soccer ball, baseball gloves, and baseball. She smiled once she found what she was looking for. She grabbed them and closed the trunk of the car. She was about to walk back into the cabin when she was tackled to the ground.
She went into defense mode, until she heard a squeal. She knew that squeal anywhere, "Okay okay, okay, Amber I missed you too, but you kinda gotta get off of me." Andy said trying to catch her breath. Mila and Lynn rushed out of the cabin to see what happened.
They saw a blonde about Andy's age on top of her laughing. Lynn's jaw clenched and it didn't go unnoticed by Mila. They watched as the blonde helped up Andy and pulled her into a tight hug.
"Jordan said you were here!" She practically screamed into Andy's ear. Before Andy could let her go she saw three more girls run up to them and she was again tackled to the ground.
"Okay, okay, I've missed y'all too, but I have a repaired ACL, and I can't breathe!!" Andy told them. They all got off of her and helped her up. After they all were finally standing up Andy was able to give each of them a hug.
"What are you doing here?!"
"It's been so long!"
"I can't believe you're here!"
"You're a rock star now!"
They all started to talk at once. Andy held up her hands to calm them down and she laughed.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, okay. I'm here on a family vacation slash second honeymoon." Andy looked up at the cabin and smiled. She waved for Lynn and Mila to come join them. The two came down the steps and walked over to Andy.
"Ladies, this is Lynn, my wife, and this is Mila, we're in the process of adopting her. Lynn, Mila, this is Amber, Keli, Kiara, and Ciara. We all went to middle school together." Andy watched as they shook hands.
"How long are you here for?" Keli asked.
"Like in Okinawa not just Okuma." Ciara clarified.
"We're here for a while. Showing these two my favorite home. Leaving a few days before Thanksgiving." Andy told them. She also felt Lynn pull her closer. She knew what that meant, and she would talk to her about it later.
"Jordan mentioned something about a little campfire tonight." Amber said with a smile.
Andy nodded, "Yeah these ladies want to her some stories of me in middle school. I also bought my guitar. Could play a few things. But, I promised Mila that I would teach some sports today. So we'll see y'all tonight?"
"Definitely! Can't wait!" Keli said smiling.
The four said it was nice to meet Lynn and Mila once more, and they started to walk away. Andy sighed and shook her head, "I never thought those four would still be friends. Last time I saw them they were at each other's throats. Tonight will be interesting if Matthew and Holden come."
"I can't wait to hear stories about you tonight!" Mila said picking up the soccer ball.
"Oh you can't can you?!" Andy said picking up Mila and throwing her over her shoulder. Mila started to laugh along with Lynn. After a few more minutes Andy put Mila down and smiled.
"Ready for the beach?" Andy asked. Both Mila and Lynn nodded. Lynn grabbed the towels off the railing and took Andy's hand in hers. Andy carried the baseball gloves with the baseball tucked into one of the gloves, as well as the small bag and put it on her shoulder. Mila grabbed the football, and soccer ball.
"This is going to be the best vacation ever!" Mila said jogging ahead of them.
"I have a feeling she's going to be saying that every time we go somewhere." Lynn said resting her head on Andy's shoulder as they walked behind Mila.
Andy kissed the top of Lynn's head. "No gigs, no interviews, no phone calls, and hopefully no interruptions."
"Oh please, we're gonna get interrupted some how." Lynn laughed as they reached the beach. Andy told Mila to pick a spot. Lynn smiled watching Mila rush close to the water. They two watched as she stopped and dropped the football and soccer ball. Once they reached her, they set their towels up and Mila started to kick the soccer ball around. Andy smile taking off her tank top. Now she was just in her sports bra and black and red swim trunks.
"Better show how to properly kick the ball, otherwise she's gonna break a toe." Andy smiled giving Lynn a kiss.
"Have fun." Lynn whispered against her lips.
"You're more than welcome to join us." Andy said smiling.
"Nah, her and I bonded over sketches and writing. I think you two should bond over sports." Lynn touched Andy's cheek.
"Are we playing?! Or are you and mom going to be mushy all day?!" Mila shouted at them. Both Lynn and Andy looked at her in shock.
"Did she just-" Lynn started to asked.
"I don't know. Um, okay, maybe she was just in the moment. It's a little too soon isn't it?"
"Yeah, yeah. Okay, we'll ask about it later. Go and teach her a few things." Lynn gave her another kiss. When they pulled away, Andy took off her flip flops and jogged over to Mila.
When Andy reached Mila she picked the soccer ball and smiled, "Let's start with the first rule of soccer. Can't use your hands. Only if you're the goalie. However, if a goalie's team member passes them the ball with their feet, they can't us their hands. Also if there ball goes out of bounds, then you can use your hands to throw the ball back in. There's a lot of rules, but I'll teach you today." Andy dropped the ball and kicked up with her foot. She began to juggle the ball with her feet. Mila watched in awe.
Andy let the ball drop and then looked back at Mila, "Now, it's all about having control. Since we're on a beach so it's gonna be a little harder. When you were kicking the ball around, I saw you using your toe. So, let me show you how to kick, dribble, and pass without using your toe."
"I can't wait!" Mila said.
"Let's get started kiddo!" Andy smiled and stood next to Mila and started to show her how to use her foot with the ball.
Lynn smiled seeing Andy and Mila together. She brought Andy's camera with her and she started to snap some pictures. Once she captured a few moments she put the camera aside, and reached into the bag and pulled out the small bottle of sunscreen. Even though she applied some back in the cabin she wanted to reapply. Once she was done she laid down. She was about to close her eyes when she heard someone whistle at her.
She sat up thinking it was Andy, she lifted up her sunglasses, seeing Andy and Mila not to far from her. She shrugged and started to lay back down again. Just as she was about to get settled she heard the cat call again. This time she sat up fully and started to look around. That's when she saw two guys walking up to her.
One was in really good shape, with a crew cut. He was wearing blue swim trunks and had a nice tan going. The other had blonde hair spiked up, gray swim trunks with blue flames, and was not as in shape as the other but enough that he worked out. They had smiles on their faces as they walked up to her.
"What's a beautiful girl like you doing on a beach like this?" The guy with the crew cut asked kneeling down giving his best smile.
Lynn smirked and brought up her left hand. That's when he saw her wedding ring. He pulled down his sunglasses and chuckled.
"Who's the lucky man that scooped you up?" He asked.
"More like WOman." Lynn heard Andy's voice and smiled.
The two looked up and saw Andy standing there with her arms crossed and Mila next to her with a glaring look.
"Don't think she's interested fellas. Might wanna move along."
"Hasn't changed has she Matthew?" The blonde asked with a smirk.
Andy took off sunglasses and really looked at them, "Holden?! Matthew?! Oh my GOD! Look at you two!"
Matthew rushed up to her and threw her over his shoulder, "The three amigos are back!" He shouted spinning them around. He finally put her down and then Holden did the same.
Lynn and Mila once again were left standing confused. They watched as Holden put her down and the three started to do a chant and some sort of handshake. When they were done, Andy gave them both a tight hug. When she let go of them she turned to Lynn and Mila.
"I'm so sorry for trying to pick you up. Had I known you were married to Andy here I would not have tried that lame ass line on you." Matthew said with a genuine smile this time.
Lynn shrugged, "It's okay, she gets all body guard when someone with your looks tries to hit on me." She told them with a small laugh.
"I'm trying to figure out how she managed to get the lead singer of PVRIS to settle down." Holden said playfully punching Andy's arm.
"Yeah, yeah, you and the entire world."
"Seriously, you were so shy! Only time I saw you have confidence was when you were the captain of the indoor soccer team back in middle school." Matthew smiled shaking his head.
"You were the captain of a team?" Mila asked in awe looking at Andy.
"The VERY first captain might we add." Holden said.
"Okay, okay, hey, we're having a fire tonight and kind of a reunion. Keli, Ciara, Amber, Kiara, Jordan, and if I see Gary today gonna invite him too. Now here's the question. You two aren't going to fight over the girls again now are you?"
Both Matthew and Holden looked at each other and smiled, "Not if they fight over us first." They both said at the same time. Andy rolled her eyes and smiled at the two.
"Oh bring your stories of Andy! We want to hear them!" Lynn said putting her arm around Andy's waist.
"Yeah! I wanna hear all about my mama!" Mila said with excitement. Once again Lynn and Andy looked at Mila in shock.
Holden smiled and looked at Mila, "We'll be there, and we'll bring the s'mores!"
"All right, we're gonna head down further. Hey if we run into Gary we'll tell him to come by. What cabin are you in?" Matthew asked.
"Eight. Right by the campsite." Lynn said.
"We'll see you tonight!" Matthew smiled. The three did their little chant and handshake, then the two guys were off. Andy shook her head and chuckled.
"Three amigos huh? What did the three of you get into when you were a preteen?" Lynn asked teasingly.
"Oh, just you wait!" Andy kissed Lynn's forehead and then looked back at Mila.
"Okay, what do you want to learn next kiddo? Baseball, or football." Andy asked.
"How about football?! Can you show me how to throw this big thing?"
"I sure can. But first it's getting a little hot, let's get some more sunscreen on you." Andy said grabbing the bottle.
"Babe you're gonna need some too. You're turning red already. Don't need you to get sunburnt again. When you're done with Mila, I'll put some on you." Lynn said gently touching Andy's shoulder.
"Can you teach me how to swim too?" Mila asked as Andy was applying sunscreen on her back.
"Sure, if we don't have time today, we can cool off after the batting cages tomorrow. Sound good?" Andy suggested.
"Sounds great!"
Lynn and Andy both chuckled. When Andy was done applying the sunscreen on Mila, she gave the bottle to Lynn. It didn't take long for Lynn to pretty much doused Andy in sunscreen knowing just how easily she burns. Once she was done she put the bottle in the bag and Mila was off running with the football. Andy turned to Lynn and gave her a quick kiss.
As Andy ran off to meet up with Mila Lynn grabbed the camera again and started to take a few more pictures. When she was done, she put the camera back in the bag and sat down on her towel. She laid down ready to catch some sun. She closed her eyes, listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. She adjusted her sunglasses and started to relax. She couldn't wait until tonight.
She was always finding out something new about Andy and she loved it. She couldn't wait to take her back to Boston and show her the real Boston. The Boston she grew up in. She also couldn't wait to show Mila either. The future looked good, and she just couldn't wait.
**********************************************************************************
"Hey babe, were you able to get those burgers?" Lynn asked coming out of the cabin.
"Yeah, they should be in the cooler." Andy said turning around. She was showing Mila how to start a fire and explaining what she could use if she was ever lost in the woods. Lynn went back into the cabin to try and figure out where the burgers and hot dogs were. She could have sworn she looked in the cooler.
"Okay, so friction is what you need. There was a time I started a fire with wool and two stones." Andy said throwing in some dry leaves.
"How did you manage that?!"
Andy shrugged, "I was deer hunting with dad, and we were out in the middle of nowhere. Dad couldn't find his lighter and it was getting cold. Somehow he forgot it. Normally he doesn't forget things. Well we found a steel piece of wool, some dry leaves, and two flat stones. So we built the fire pit and I went to work. Dad asked where did I learn the technique from and I told him he showed it to me to me when I was six. I'm pretty sure he got a little teary eyed when I told him.
But we have a lighter today, and a few things we need to start this fire. Now, question for you. If the fire gets out of control and you don't have any water, what do you do?"
Mila thought for a moment, "Uh, dirt or sand?"
Andy smiled and nodded, "Correct. Now, I'm sure you've seen in the movies and TV that using two sticks. One with a little cut in it, and the other you're using between your hands and rubbing them together. That works too. But you're hands will end up with splinters. It'll suck but it'll be worth it in the end."
"How do you know so much about this stuff?" Mila asked with a smile putting a small branch in the fire.
"All thanks to dad really. He taught Wendy and I how to survive in case we were ever caught in a situation where we needed to use the skills." Andy said setting up the grill and the kettle.
Lynn walked out with a couple of plastic bags, "Found them! They were buried under everything." She said walking up to them.
"Are you making campfire coffee?!" Lynn asked with excitement.
"I'll make it tomorrow morning. I know it's hot but, tonight is gonna get a little chilly. So I'm making campfire cocoa."
Lynn smiled and put the bags down. She sat down next to her and then looked at Mila, "She's always surprising me. I think there's a surprise like every day."
"She even did that when were in school together." They all turned to see Matthew and Holden walking up to them.
"S'mores as promised." Holden smiled at Mila putting down a small bag on the picnic table. The two took a seat on one of the logs and smiled.
"So we ran into the girls and we're cool. Things are in the past and we decided to not bring up our drama unless it comes up in our stories about Andy." Matthew said with a smile.
"Well of course it is. I was caught in the middle of y'all." Andy said putting the burgers and hot dogs on the grill.
"Come to think about it, you're right. Plus you were always playing matchmaker with us all." Matthew shook his head and he smiled thanking Mila for giving him a bottle of water.
"Sorry, we don't have any soda guys, Andy's hasn't had one in about what? Five years?" Lynn asked looking at Andy.
She blew out a breath, "I met you what? Twenty seventeen? So close to yeah, five years."
"How the fuck did you manage that?!" Matthew asked almost spitting out his water.
"WHOA! Hey! There's kids here!" Andy said flipping the burgers.
"Hey! I'm a teen!" Mila said with a laugh as she was helping Lynn set up the fixings for the burgers and hot dogs.
"Just, watch your mouths." Andy said and winked at Mila.
"Once again how did you manage to not drink soda for five years?!" Holden repeated Matthew's question.
Andy chuckled she looked at them, "I was just working a lot drinking back to back energy drinks, along with soda. So I just decided to stop. So now, it's water, juice, coffee, sweet tea, a Gatorade every now and then. Lastly my workout stuff."
"QUICK HANDS!" Someone shouted. Matthew, Holden, and Andy all jumped up. Mila and Lynn both watched as the three rushed to catch a football.
Andy was able to catch it and before she could show off she was tackled to the ground. Andy laughed seeing who tackled her. "And there he is! Gary with the arm!" He laughed and helped her up.
Andy gave the tall man a hug,"Look at that 'fro bro, and those freckles haven't gone anywhere."
"Yeah, yeah. But you know this mocha skin still gets the ladies." Gary laughed as they pulled away.
"Come one let me introduce you to the wife, and soon to be daughter." Andy said and the four headed back to the campfire.
"By the way, the girls stopped by the store, they'll be here soon. Along with Jordan." Gary told her putting his arm around her shoulders.
"It's so good to see you!" Gary ruffled her hair. Andy laughed as they reached the campfire.
"It's good to see you too buddy!" She said putting her arm around his shoulders.
She introduced Gary to Lynn and Mila. After exchanging pleasantries. They all sat down and Andy went back to manning the grill. She said the food was almost ready, and Lynn started to hand out paper plates. She said it was like a buffet style.
"My kind of style." Holden said with a laugh.
"The party has arrived!" They heard and turned to see Jordan with a smile followed by the four girls Lynn and Mila met earlier.
After everyone greeted each other. Everyone gathered around the picnic table to get their plates together. Andy was joking around with the guys and Lynn smiled and rolled her eyes.
"I swear it's like nothing has changed with them." Keli said shaking her head.
"You should see her back home. It's even worse." Lynn told them and they all laughed.
"Come on, we want to know everything about you and Mila!" Ciara said taking Lynn's hand and leading her towards the fire. Everyone sat down and conversations were going in different directions. Andy was laughing with her old buddies while Lynn and Mila were talking with Andy's old girl pals. The evening was off to a good start.
*********************************************************************************
"Oh come on now, why haven't you two collabed yet?" Amber asked as Andy ended a song.
Lynn and Andy looked at each other with a knowing look. Lynn gave her a nod and Andy smiled. She took a sip of her drink and then cleared her throat.
"We actually worked on something together. Somehow it got leaked in Atlanta. We're going to release it soon." Andy said lightly strumming her guitar.
"Didn't you say you wanted to do something with that chick from that one show? I swear you said you were gonna marry her one day." Ciara said and every one but Mila and Lynn laughed.
"What girl?"
"What show?"
Both Mila and Lynn asked at the same time. Andy smiled turning her attention the them. While still strumming her guitar she started to speak.
"There was this show back when I was a junior in high school called Instant Star. I fell in love with it. The songs, the girl, the show. It was part of the reason why I wanted to get into music. Anyway the lead actress Alexz Johnson, is an actual singer songwriter. Around season two was when I wanted to work with her. Season three I REALLY wanted to work with her. I started doing covers of her songs and just sang my heart out." She smiled and started to play a melody.
"There's two songs that I really love in the show. One of them helps me get through a rough time. I kind of kept that song hidden from everyone. But this one song is mostly for Lynn and Mila." She turned fully to them and smiled.
"Where does it hurt?
Tell me 'cause I understand
the words of a heart are beating like winds in my hand.
We can hide.
We'll never lie.
I'll always see into you.
Lynn and Mila looked at each other with a smile and then looked back at Andy. Lynn put her arm around Mila and two just listened. Everyone else smiled and took out their phones to record Andy singing to her family.
There's nothing wrong with coming up empty and cold.
Staying too long and try to change rocks into gold.
I've been there too.
I've wasted myself.
And you were there for me.
So whenever you crash, where ever you lay, that's where I'll be.
"You know she won the talent show back in eighth grade, but she wasn't there to receive the award." Amber said.
"Oh yeah, I remember. She said she wasn't good enough, and that she didn't deserve it." Gary told them.
And for every endless midnight, there's a sky full of broken stars.
And there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
Where does it hurt.
When you open your heart there's always so much to lose.
So far to fall and no where to go when it's true.
But if you let me in, I won't let you down. Put your faith in me.
"Why doesn't she have a record deal?" Kiara asked.
"In one of her interviews she said she didn't want one because she can't just have one genre of music." Gary said with a shrug. Everyone looked at him with wide eyes. He turned to them, "What? I kept up with her. She's our friend, and she's kept up with all of us. She's never forgotten our birthdays, and she checks in on us once in a while."
"He does have a point." Holden said and they all nodded.
Mila couldn't help but overhear what they said. She moved closer to Lynn and smiled. She couldn't wait to be a part of this family.
"Didn't we always say she was gonna make it somehow?" Kiara asked with a smile.
"I always thought it would be sports though." Matthew said and Amber nudged him. They laughed gently.
'Cause whenever you crash, where ever you lay, that's where I'll be.
And for every endless midnight, there's a sky full of broken stars.
And there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
And there's a million streets to walk down, in this city of broken hearts.
But there'll always be a place for you, inside my arms.
Where does it hurt."
(Song and Lyrics by Alexz Johnson)
Andy ended the song and smiled at Lynn and Mila. Both were wiping small tears from their eyes. She cleared her throat and looked at both of them.
"I just want both of you to know, no matter what you can come to me. No matter how big or small the problem is. I'm here for you both. Day or night. No matter where I am in the world, I will be there." Andy put the guitar down and before she could fully turn back around she found herself on the ground again. She laughed and wrapped her arms around Mila.
"I think I've been tackled to the ground more times today than any other time I've played football or soccer." Andy chuckled and she kissed the top of head. Mila finally let her go and helped her up.
Andy sat next to Lynn and put her arm around her, "When are you going to stop surprising me?"
"Never." Andy whispered.
"Meet me on the beach later tonight?" Lynn asked and Andy kissed her forehead.
"I'll meet you anywhere any time." Andy said.
"She did not!" Mila yelled looking at Andy. "You beat up people?!"
"I guess it's story time." Andy said with a chuckle.
"Wait, even when you were in middle school you beat up people?! This I gotta hear!" Lynn said moving towards the edge of her seat.
"Believe it or not she shoved me into the lockers." Gary said.
"Well yeah, you were picking on a kid with glasses and a stack of books. Then, you hit the books out of his hands!" Andy said as she put a few branches into the fire.
"How did you two become friends?" Lynn asked.
"We actually weren't really friends in school. We didn't like each other. But we were always on the same team in P.E. class. Football, soccer, baseball, dodgeball, floor hockey, handball. We were the dynamic duo. It wasn't until I said I wasn't going to high school with them that things changed." Andy said and Gary nodded.
"We never really talked through out school. Just P.E. class. We both won awards for P.E. and we were known around school as the two biggest athletes. I didn't think I was going to miss her. At her going away party we just shook hands and told each other to take care. I went home and I actually cried." Gary confessed.
"No you didn't." Andy said looking at Gary with a shake of her head. He looked at her with a meaningful look. Andy sat back in her chair and sighed.
"I was there. I went over to his house after your party and he was a mess. Crying about who was he going to play football with in high school." Jordan said putting his hand on his shoulder.
"Andy you left an impression on all of us. When I first met you I gotta be honest I thought you were just a bookworm. You always had a book in your hand. The first few weeks of seventh grade you were sitting by yourself, at lunch, with your nose in a book. Then we had the team competition, you were picked last for our baseball team. They put you in the worst position, possible. But you didn't let it get to you." Amber started.
"Then, this eighth grader hit it towards you. We didn't think you were going to get it. But then out of nowhere you caught the ball and threw all the way to third base. Then, you were up to bat. We really didn't think you were able to hit. It was a full count, then you hit it out of the park." Matthew chimed in.
"Literally. Out of the park. You ended the game with a win. You were still shy when we all ran up to you. When Jones said it was over. You just smiled at us, grabbed your stuff and walked away. The very next day we were all around you talking about the game. You smiled and said that you were going to be late for class. Again you just walked away." Ciara said.
"Let's not forget the eighth grade talent show. You got up there and sang your heart out. But thought it wasn't good enough. You actually won the talent show, but you were nowhere to be found. So they gave the award to Jason instead. We didn't see you for almost three days." Keli said.
"Or how about the fact you helped me get a B in English class." Kiara started to say. "If it wasn't for you I would have failed. I saw your A and I approached you. At first you were skeptical, but then you told me to meet you in the library. You promised me that I would pass the class at the end of the year and that you would see me in eighth grade. You kept your promise." Kiara wiped a tear from her eye.
Holden chuckled, "You didn't have to take any final exams in school either. You had enough extra credit to pass the classes, besides math. You were the student we all wanted to be. Good grades, great athlete, and working hard at everything. You always managed to accomplish what you wanted. You never gave up. You kept going." Holden finished squeezing her hand.
"Even when we were all fighting at some point you were always our balance. You kept things balanced. Then, when you said you were leaving it kinda broke us all. We drifted apart, but you kept in contact with us. Just when we thought you forgot about us, you remembered us. You brought us all back together. We were able to reconnect because of you." Jordan said smiling looking at her.
Lynn nodded, "Even before I met you, you seemed to bring people together. You make an impression everywhere you go. One of the reasons I fell in love with you. Just like Holden said. You never give up, and you go after what you want."
Andy smiled and looked around at everyone, "But I wouldn't be here if it weren't for each and every one of you. You all inspired me in some way. To be a better friend, athlete, student, person, and to be who I am. I know it's been a long time since we've all seen each other. But I'm glad we're all together tonight. Hopefully down the road we can meet again and catch up in person. It's been far too long. Social media is great, but this," Andy said looking around and using hand to gesture to everyone.
"This is more than amazing. I want to make the most of this and I want us to do this again sometime soon. We all grew up and life took hold, but we still have our memories and our good times. We all created a bond with each other when we were what, thirteen or fourteen, and look at us now. We're each successful in our lives some how some way. We keep thriving and living out our dreams. We all kept pushing through those roadblocks and it got us here. We all never gave up. I'm honored to be with all of you tonight. I'm glad I get to spend time with each of you. I can't wait to see what all of you do." Andy finished with a smile.
"Seriously! You and your words are still awesome!" Matthew said wiping his eye. He cleared his throat. He stood up and raised his cup, "Here's to life long friends and to making more memories together. Cheers!"
Everyone stood up and said 'Cheers.' The night went on and Mila yawned. Andy smiled and told her she should get some sleep. She shook her head saying she was fine. Andy chuckled and insisted she go to bed. Mila gave in and she said goodnight to everyone. Lynn gave her a hug and Andy said she would be right back.
Mila and Andy walked into the cabin and she watched as Mila went straight to the top bunk. She got under the covers and Andy tucked her in. She smiled as she watched Mila yawn.
"Did you have fun today kiddo?" Andy asked gently brushing her hair from the young girl's face.
Mila nodded, "Loads. I can't wait for tomorrow. Learning all about you tonight and just knowing who you really are makes me happy knowing who my mama is. I can't wait to know who my mom is."
Andy smiled and kissed her forehead, "Good night kiddo, sweet dreams." She said softly. She watched Mila close her eyes and began to breathe deeply. She walked out of the cabin and quietly closed the door. When she walked out she noticed everyone but Matthew and Holden were still around the fire.
She walked over them and started to clean up. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see Holden, "Lynn said to meet her at the beach. Matthew and I will clean up and put out the fire. Go get her bro." He told her. She smiled at him and gave him a pat on his shoulder.
She started to walk towards the beach with some of the lighting from the lamps and the full moon. She came to the start of the beach and smiled. There sat her wife, wrapped in a small blanket looking up at the night sky. She stood there for a moment just taking her in. She let out a sigh and smiled.
She took off her flip flops and picked them up then started to walk onto the sand. She'll never get tired of feeling the sand under her feet. Once she reached Lynn she sat down and smiled.
"Well, kiddo is out like a light." She told her putting her around Lynn. She leaned in and put her head on Andy's shoulder.
"She said she loved getting to know her mama, and she can't wait to get to know her mom." Andy told Lynn and pulled her closer.
"When was the last time you saw all your friends?" Lynn asked.
Andy shrugged, "My going away party in eighth grade in Mrs. Nettleton's class room. The girls weren't talking to each other. Matthew and Holden were goofing around. Jordan was trying to flirt with some other girls, and Gary was just kind of hanging in the background. A few days later found myself on a plane back to the States."
"How old were you?"
Andy let out a breath trying to remember, "Thirteen I think. So wow almost twenty years since I've seen them in person. Found them all on social media, added them, kept in contact. But I've been taking a break from social media since our wedding. So I had no idea everyone was here."
"I'm glad I get to know this side of you. It's like you're still the same person twenty years later. But, you were in fights when you were younger?" Lynn asked raising her head to look at her.
Andy smiled, "We'll get to that. But I mean you saw how I can get. That one time at Mary's you saw and then that bar fight. However, I do have a dark past in this place, which is a past I've left behind. A past that I don't want to let you see."
Lynn touched her cheek, "Remember our talks about letting each other in?"
"How could I forget." Andy said kissing the heel of Lynn's hand.
"But what I'm scared about is Mila knowing that side of me. I don't want her to be scared of me." Andy told her with a sigh.
"She's going to love you no matter what. Just like I do." Lynn softly kissed her cheek and Andy smiled.
"By the way you're not getting off easy. You had a pretty good grip on me when the girls showed up." Andy said shaking her head.
Lynn shrugged, "I gotta get used to the fact that you have friends that are girls. I mean I do too, but some of them are just better looking than I am."
Andy gently put her finger under Lynn's chin making her look at her, "Hey, don't ever think that. I'm married to the most beautiful woman in the world. I love YOU. I want to be with YOU for the rest of my life. No one can come between us anymore. Just have faith in us. You'll see that I only have eyes for you."
"I love you so much. I still don't know what I did to deserve you." Lynn whispered leaning in.
Andy smiled, "I love you. I don't deserve you, but you have me, all of me. You always have and always will."
The two leaned in and their lips met just like many times before. This is what they needed. To just get away from everything for a while. To be a family and to just have some fun. To relax and enjoy this time together. Andy would have to leave Andy would have to leave in December for the photography awards and Lynn would be there by her side. They had the rest of their lives to find out more about each other and they couldn't wait.

"Hey Andy! I know you're on your second honeymoon slash vacation in Japan, BUT I have some exciting news for you! I remember you said you wanted to get into some acting and you kept talking about a show you would love to have rebooted!" Serenity said with a smile into her phone. She smiled at the woman sitting across from her desk and she smiled back.
"The details are still in the works, however it's looking good. You may have to move when this takes off. Canada isn't all bad. Of course you want to talk to Lynn and Mila about it. Anyway, give me a call when you get back in the States! Love you! Bye!" Serenity hung up her phone and looked at the woman.
"The timing couldn't be more wrong. I'm so sorry. She did say she wouldn't be checking her phone until she got to Boston. But I set the wheels in motion, and hopefully she'll get back to us soon." She smiled apologetically at the woman.
The woman waved her off, "It's no problem. I know she's been busy. Going on tour, getting married, starting a family. I just want to be able to work with her. I read her blog and how much she loved the show when she was a teenager."
Serenity nodded, "She did say if she listened to music then, like she does now, she would have looked at the show a little differently. Again, I'm so sorry the timing is bad. When she comes back she's going to be with her family in Virginia, for Thanksgiving. Then, she's off the Boston to finally move in fully into the house. After that she's off to London for the IPA."
"When is the IPA?" The woman asked. Serenity typed a few keys on her keyboard to look up the dates. After a few minutes she found what she was looking for.
"It's going to be on the fifteenth of December. I booked two tickets. One for her and one for Lynn. She's going to let me know about Mila's winter vacation to see if I'm booking her a ticket too."
"How long do you have them in London for?"
Serenity checked her calendar on her computer, "I have them fly in on the twelfth, and they leave on the seventeenth. They have Christmas in Boston with their families. So I had to make sure they would have a couple of days to adjust when they come back."
The woman nodded and smiled. She let out a sigh and looked at Serenity, "Thank you so much for taking this meeting. I can't wait to work with Andy. She's such a talented person. I wanted to work with her for the longest time. I can't wait." The woman stood up as did Serenity.
They shook hands and Serenity nodded, "Thank you Ms. Johnson. I'm sure she can't wait to work with you."
The young blonde nodded, "Thank you, we'll be in touch." She let go of Serenity's hand and grabbed her purse off the chair. She took out her cell phone and dialed a number. Once she was in the elevator she pressed the ground floor button and finally heard a voice on the other end.
"She's not going to get back to us until some time after Christmas. She's on her second honeymoon." She said into her phone.
"Oh don't worry, I'll make her mine as soon as she signs the contract. I can give her everything Lynn can't. I got this." She hung up her phone and smirk. Andy was as good as hers.
