Chapter 2: Rough Start

Sean forgot how unforgivable LA traffic could be; he’s stuck in gridlock for a half an hour. Needless to say his morning is off to a rough start. To top it off some idiot was parked in his spot. Sean parks two spots down and walks over to the car in his spot and gives it a once look over. He makes a mental note “Silver Honda Passport, License plate; Vega?” he walks inside and goes to the 5th floor. Demetrius is already at his desk, he is the first to clap and the other detectives follow as some of them walk up to Sean and welcome him back. Sean is the best of the best and well respected by his peers. With a grin on his face he walks in to the Sergeant Easton’s office. Sarge’ as they call him, sees Sean right away.

“Vetter! Welcome back son” with a smile he gives Sean a hug, they were like family. They day he placed the detective badge over Sean’s head he told him “Welcome to the family son” and he had been ever since.

“Sit down kid” he takes a seat behind his desk. “How are you Sean?” concern clearly in his voice.

“I’m good Sarge’. Glad to be back” Sean entwines his fingers and places them on his lap.

“Good to hear, I’ve taken the liberty to clean up your old desk and it’s ready when you are. Now to get to business I have a new case for you and as soon as Detective Vega arrives I’ll start” his eyes shift to the right, avoiding Sean’s, but he can still feel them on him and he looks up to see a very inquisitive look on Sean’s face.

“Vega is your new partner Sean” Easton looks at him determinedly.

“Partner? Sarge, I don’t need a partner they just slow you down” Sean says with exasperation in his face.

“I know you don’t need a partner Sean, it was my decision to pair you two up, it’ll be good for you” Sean let’s out an amused laugh.

“Good for me. Right. So I suppose this rookie and me are supposed to go to the bar together, and share childhood stories and he’s supposed to become my buddy right? Is that how it’s gonna be good for me?” Sean is so upset he doesn’t notice the person standing behind him until sergeant Easton stands up and looks behind him. Sean turns his head around and stands up.

“Hi, I’m the rookie” Vega gives him a cynical smile and extends her hand to Sean.

“Sean this is detective Vega, she’s you new partner” Sean looks at her up and down, the first thing that catches his attention is her fire red her, she’s dressed in dark blue jeans, red T-shirt and red Timberland boots. He extends his hand and shakes hers.

“I’m Sean Vetter”

“Yeah, I kind of figured that on my own” she raises an eyebrow looking at Easton, she wonders why he so surprised to see her.

“Look, I didn’t mean to be rude about my comment but Sarge’ knows how I feel about working with new people.” He emphasizes on the last two words, making sure she heard him. Before Vega can say anything, Easton speaks up.

“Vega can you excuse us for a second please?” she nods and glances at Sean before exiting the office and shutting the door behind her. Sean also looks her way.

“Are you serious Sarge? Don’t do this to me!” Sean’s knuckles are on the edge of Easton’s desk.

“Sean, listen to me and listen to me good kid. There aren’t any options here, got that? I chose her because she’s good Sean. She has the ability like you to blend in. She has potential to be one of the best and who better to teach her than my best.” Sean stays quiet looking out the office window.

“Now, the file of the case I want you two to work on is on your desk. Try to be nice Sean, I know for you that’s a commodity” Sean looks at him and grins, he walks out and sits on his desk. Vegas desk is right next to his. He looks to his side and there she is, sitting at the edge of her desk just staring back at him. ‘Great’ he thinks.
