2: Guildhall and After
2 years later...
It was unsettling to be on the red carpet. It was a strange feeling that was a mix between euphoria and anxiety. It was funny that she felt nervous, but she wasn’t the only one. As she glanced at Lia from the corner of her eyes, even though she seemed cheerful and animated, she saw with her best friend eyes the tension underneath.
The flash of the cameras. The buzz of the reporters. The screams of the fans. All of it was unnerving and exhilarating. She wasn’t there for the fans, however. No, she was here because it was in her very soul to act, to be an actress. That was what she was. From when she was a little girl, she knew that that was her calling.
“Julia, I’ve heard that you and Emma Lange are best friends,” one of the reporters began and continued on when Lia nodded, “how does it feel to be acting as her best friend in The Girl Crowd?”
It still amazed Emmy how Lia was able to transform herself into the perfect media butterfly. That was the reason that Lia had made it, she was a people person. She still did not know why the director of Guildhall had continued to reject Lia from the school when she knew that Lia may not have been a great actress-in-the-making but she was pretty damn good.n stn Besides, she’d made it too when others had failed.
Lia smiled beautifully for the reporters, allowing them to snap the pictures they wanted before she answered the question, “It is the best feeling in the world to be able to act with your best friend, especially one that is as talented as Emmy. Words fail to express my joy.”
“There’s also a rumor,” another reporter questioned, “that you had this intense crush on Elijah Wood a few years ago... is that true?”
The Lia before would have blushed, but the past year of being under careful scrutiny for her blossoming modeling career that had led to her role in The Girl Crowd, had helped her to control her emotions better. “It is not had, I still have a crush on him,” she admitted cheekily. The reporters wanted to ask her more questions, but she linked her arm with Emmy’s and said with a bare hint of regret, “That’s all the time for questions that I have!”
Once they’d enter into the safety of the theatre, Emmy could not help but be amused at Lia’s blatant statement. “You aren’t shy about your love life, are you?” she commented. “So the crush still remains, whoever would have thought that the most sought after model in London is crazy over Frodo Baggins.”
Lia grinned and pulled Emmy with her to their seats next to the director and the producer. “It cannot be helped, I am not a girl that is easily swayed from a long held like,” she confessed with an almost resigned tone. “I would rather truttruth be known from my lips than to be presumed without being confirmed.”
“What a wise woman you have become,” Emmy remarked. “So twisting and turning with your words, which was once only my forte, I say it’s now a skill we both share.”
They both laughed lightly, causing the rest of the nearby cast to turn to their direction. They were a captivating pair on screen and off screen. One was alluring, while the other was mysterious. There was a playfulness in Lia, while there was a secretiveness in Emmy. Together, they made an outstanding pair to work with their sense of humor and camaraderie.
It was no secret that Emmy was the hidden star in the film. Without a doubt, they had chosen her for her talent, while they had selected Lia for her name. All of them had been pleasantly surprised at Lia’s ability that far surpassed their wildest expectations. As her charming, though scatterbrained protagonist, she hit the vein perfectly, while Emmy was brilliant as her suicidal and paranoid needy best friend.
There was no doubt that this movie was going to carry both girls to another level for it was already receiving rave reviews from the critics that had previewed it. The Girl Crowd was a witty, if psychedelic portrayal of two on again and off again best friends that somehow managed to stay together despite their innate antagonistic personas. It was engaging and the beauty was that it ended too soon.
Watching themselves on the screen, a dream of both of theirs for the longest time was odd and strange. There was the sensation that they’d made it; there was the awareness that this was only the beginning. When it was over, they were not sure if they truly stepped out of the fantasy or merely stepped into it. The dream wasn’t realized, it was captured. '>
“You are timely like always,” his agent, Rabin remarked dryly, looking quite adamantly at his watch. Orlando was running late not by five minutes but thirty. “You’re a lucky bastard that this isn’t a set, it’s only me.”
His star actor merely sprawled his lean, muscular body onto the couch and gave him a gregarious grin. “It was the traffic mate,” he responded. “You know how awful it gets.”
Rolling his eyes up to the white washed ceiling of his overwhelming modern and steel office, Rabin prayed for patience. “You only live fifteen minutes away because you can never get up on time for a reason, Orlando!”
Orlando raised an eyebrow up with inquiry for there was something wrong with the rising anxiety in his agent’s voice. “What’s wrong, mate?”
Rabin let out a frustrated sigh and threw a pile of papers, quite clearly a script at Orlando. “Nothing is wrong. But I am not so certain about accepting this role for you that has been offered to you because this director is a tight-fist. He hates tardiness.”
“Do not worry so much,” Orlando responded. “You know my timing for a project is always tolerable. I know when I need to get there. You are far too anxious.” Beginning to flip through the script, he started to analyze the content, the storyline. “So the role is Percy Sinclair?”
“Yes, it’s a good role for you,” Rabin remarked. “It’s a change for you, instead of playing the idealistic protagonist, you will be acting the broody antagonist, rigid and inflexible. You’ll be transformed by a woman, and it may be clique but the lines are a bloody masterpiece.”
“So who will be acting opposite of me?” he inquired, his eyes filled with the curiosity of a new challenge. This was the reason he was in this business because it was limitless, there was no end in sight. “I am interested in this, it is definitely a different sort of role.”
Shrugging his shoulders, Rabin replied, “That I do not know yet. They are considering several possible actresses. One of them that has an outside chance is someone that will interest you, she is still a part-time student at Guildhall.”
That indeed intrigued him for he was interested in any fellow Guildhall chum that managed to make it. There was a fellowship between those that had come from that environment. There was something about the atmosphere that ingrained a distinctive view of acting. It was not merely a career but a lifestyle.
“What’s her name?” he asked casually.
“Emma Lange.”
Thl>That name sounded familiar, but he could not recall where he had heard it before. He didn’t have time to think about it further because Rabin was rambling on about the upcoming events that he must attend. The hectic schedule kept him booked until the new script finished casting and was ready to begin filming. What a life he led!
“Christ!” Dominic muttered. “Even Julia Damon is simply crazy about Lij.”
The two chummy hobbits were meeting for lunch, waiting for Elijah and Sean to arrive for it was one of their few free times to hang out as a group. It was unfortunate that Orlando could not make it because he had another commitment, if he had it would have been like old times. Four hobbits and one elf--- yes, most assuredly like the old times.
Billy shook his head sadly, he just did not understand what drove girls mad over Elwood. It couldn’t be the height, all the hobbits were the same rather short length. It couldn’t be the body, they were all built pretty similarly--- no one had a great advantage over the others, though Sean was a tad on the chubby side. It must be Lij’s deep true blue eyes. Sadly, that was what distinguished him.
“Julia Damon, eh?” he remarked. “Isn’t she taller than him?”
Dominic chuckled and slapped his hand on his knee. “No,” he answered when he was able to breathe again, “she’s not quite taller than he is. She’s actually not that tall a a model. She’s, I think, 5’5”. Not all that remarkable in height, but it’s her face and her body that got her where she is. She’s gorgeous. Why are all the pretty ones goo-goo over him?”
“I will agree vehemently with you,” Billy responded with a nod of confirmation. “She is truly stunning...” his words trailed off as he saw Elijah approaching them wearing a scruffy baseball cap and glasses that did alter his appearance enough that half of his fans didn’t recognize him. “Look who makes his delayed arrival.”
“Sorry guys,” Elijah apologized, sitting with his back to the crowd at the back table his friends had chosen. “You know how it is. They still somehow manage to recognize me.”
Both Billy and Dominic nodded sympathetically, though their eyes were filled with mirth and humor. “I don’t know what it is with you and girls going gaa-gaa for you,” Billatedated with a sigh of deliberate exaggeration. “I mean even Julia Damon.”
“Julia Damon?” Elijah queried, puzzled for he didn’t recognize the name.
“For all your love of British slang,” Dominic commented, “you still do not get what’s it.” They both shook their heads, he did not get what was it. “If you want to talk the talk, you got to walk the walk and get integrated with what it is. And Julia Damon is it.”
There was a distinctively dubious expression on Elijah’s face that said he was not going to know who Julia Damon was unless they told him who she was. So Billy, being the kind soul that he was, informed him, “She’s a prodigious model that has turned actress that has confessed her undying love for you.”
Elijah blinked and Dominic slapped the newspaper gossip column with a glossy picture of Julia Damon admitting honestly that she had not had a crush on Elijah Wood, but that she still did have a crush on him. As he stared at her dark indigo eyes, it was like a reflection of his own. But that was not what had words fail him, it was that he had seen her once before.
His face screwed up into a valley of wrinkles as he tried to pull the memory of where he’d seen her face. There had been so many parties, too many projects, and endless premieres--- yes, that hit a note, was it a premiere then? That made him think. It did strike a vein. Hmmm, it was a while ago. He’d remember seeing someone that beautiful, that attractive to his eyes.
London, of course, she was a Brit after all. It had to be an earlier one, so it had to be the one for the Fellowship of the Ring. His eyes widened, so that was her. If he knew her name, it was possible to discover and uncover the name of her friend, Emmy, it was--- who had made that statement, that quote that had stayed in his head and driven him onward.
There are no limits. Obviously not. Her friend had made it. He wondered if she had. There was a way to find out, he was sure he could get his agent to do some digging up for him. It’d be interesting to see where she was. It’d be a good idea to keep the article too. “Do you mind?” Elijah questioned, holding the newspaper.
The duo shook their heads. No, they did not mind. What they were wondering was what had been up with the torrent of emotions that had passed over their friend’s face. There’d been astonishment, recognition, wonderment, and reflection. Did Elijah know her?
The director of A Whirlwind Affair had called him this morning with the breaking news that would make his client’s name. Not only was it the lead role, it was with Orlando Bloom, an actor on a meteoric rise. That only made the movie more desirable. This was a good morning.
“Good morning,” Charles greeted as a lithesome darkly auburn young lady entered into his office at precisely nine o’clock. She had the discerning tendency to be not early not late but exactly on time. “I have the best news for you, Em darling.”
She smiled at him. “What is it, Charlie?”
“You got the part in A Whirlwind Affair, Em dear!” he exclaimed enthusiastically, pulling her into a crushing bear hug. “They loved your performance in The Girl Crowd with Julia Damon. You’ve been cast as Keeley Heath, the starring role. You are well on your way!”
Vaguely, she remembered the script that she’d read a few weeks before. The role was certainly different from her character in The Girowd.owd. If she recalled accurately, instead of being paranoid and unstable, she was to be overwhelming ecstatic and grounded. It was unerringly what she was searching for, any method to broaden her acting spectrum. The opportunity was unbelievable.
She closed her eyes; she felt almost like she was floating on a cloud at level nine. It was an extraordinary feeling to be doing what she loved in the roles that she wanted. There was nothing more that she’d want to be than what she was. This was who she was.
Author’s Note: Like it, want more of it? Review it and you might see more. And my apologies about updating. I intend to update about every week. It just slipped my mind.
