Part 3
The week was over and Josh was on a plane to Orlando. He called Justin the night before to make sure he would pick him up. When his plane landed he saw Justin standing away from everyone. He walked over and they shared a quick hug. They picked up his luggage and went to the car to head home. Josh looked at Justin as he started the car and he could tell by his face and demeanor that whatever they had a week ago was over. He turned and looked out the window watching the scenery pass. When they arrived home Josh took his suitcase from the back and went inside. He sat on the sofa waiting for Justin to come and officially rip his heart out. After sitting in silence for a while Justin finally spoke up.
“Josh, I don’t really know how to say this...” he started but was interrupted.
“Just say it.” Josh said
“I think maybe we should take a break.” Justin said
“A break?” JC asked
“I’m sorry Josh, I just need to be alone right now. It’s not forever, just until I get my mind in order.” Justin said
“ Until you get your mind in order. Is this what you decided or Lynn?” JC asked
“What?” Justin asked surprised
“You heard me Justin. Is this what you want or is it what she wants for you?”
“This has nothing to do with her. I thought about it and I’m just not sure I’m ready to be married. I mean how do I know you’re the one Josh. There’s never been anyone else.” Justin said.
“I see. I thought you knew because you loved me. I guess I was wrong.”
Josh stood and walked towards the door.
“Where are you going?” Justin asked
“I have to find somewhere to stay Justin. Where do you think I’m going?” JC said
“You can stay here. We have lots of extra rooms.” Justin said
“No Justin, you have lots of extra rooms and I’m not interested in staying in any of them. I’ll be back for my things later.” JC said walking towards the door.
Justin looked at the ring on his finger and removed it. He tried to give it to Josh who just shook his head no.
“Keep it, pawn it, sell it on Ebay I don’t care. It’s yours, I bought it for you and no one else will ever wear it.” Josh said walking to his car and leaving.
Josh pulled out his cell phone and called Joey. He wasn’t even sure if he was home.
“Hello” Joey said on the third ring
“Joe, it’s Josh” he said voice breaking
“Hey C, what’s up?” Joey said
“Would it be ok if I stayed at your place until we finish recording here?” JC asked
“Why? C what’s wrong?” Joey asked
“I’ll tell you when I get there. I don’t think I can talk about it and drive.” JC said
‘Yeah, sure man. I’ll see you in a bit.” Joey said
When Josh arrived at Joey’s he was met by his friend at the door. As soon as he was close enough to Joey he lost it. He barely made it inside before the sobs took over. Joey held him while he cried trying to figure out what happened. When Josh calmed down a bit Joey asked him what happened.
“It’s over. Justin and I are over.” Josh said
“What do you mean?” Joey asked
“He told me he needed space. Needed to be alone to get his mind in order. Can you believe that?” JC said
“No C I can’t. I don’t understand.” Joey said
“Well that makes two of us. I’m sure Lynn had something to do with this.”
“I don’t think Justin would let her talk him into anything C. I’m sure he’ll come to his senses.” Joey said
“Maybe. Do you mind if I go up and take a nap. I’m exhausted and I need to rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.” JC said
“Sure C. Take any room you want.”
Joey called and filled Chris and Lance in on what he knew. The two were as surprised as he was. He went out to get food while Josh was taking his nap, but he refused to eat staying in his room instead. Joey was just about sleep when he heard crying. He got out of bed and went to Josh’s room. He was crying so hard he didn’t hear Joey come in.
“C” Joey said opening the door.
“I’m...sorry Joe.....didn’t mean to wake ...you.” Josh said between sobs
“It’s ok.” Joey said rubbing Josh’s back
“I.. couldn’t sleep... and I just couldn’t stop crying.” JC said
“It’ll be ok. Want me to sleep in here with you?” Joey offered
“You...don’t ...mind?” JC said
“Not at all.” Joey said.
He got into bed with Josh and held his friend as he finally drifted to a restless sleep.
The next morning they had to be at the studio to record. Joey and Josh rode together and were the last to arrive. Josh tried to ignore Justin as much as possible even though it was difficult. Johnny noticed the tension in the room but figured the band would work it out as usual. At lunch time Chris suggested they might want to eat together.
“I’m in.” Justin said
“Fine with me.” Lance said
“Me too. C?” Joey asked
“Go ahead. I’m fine. I’m not very hungry.” he said
The four walked out and rode in Joey’s truck. They kept the conversation as light as possible but noticed that Justin was very quiet.
“You still with us J?” Chris asked
“Yeah I’m here.” Justin said
“You want to talk about it?” Lance asked
“NO. I’m fine.” Justin said quickly.
Lunch went off fine. It was almost as if Justin had forgotten about Josh already. The other three couldn’t understand it at all. Maybe Justin really didn’t love Josh.
After their hour and a half lunch break they returned to the studio to find that Josh was gone.
“Where’s Josh?” Justin asked Johnny.
“He finished laying his vocals and said he was taking a cab home. Said he wasn’t feeling well.” their manager offered.
“Oh.” Justin said
The rest of the day Justin became less and less successful at pretending every thing was fine. He didn’t think that he could stand the way things were going. He thought that he and Josh would still be friends like always, but he was finding out that maybe he had been wrong. He toyed with the ring on the end of the chain around his neck and thought about what he’d done.
Lynn left a message for Justin on his answering machine inviting him to dinner the next day. She said he could bring Josh if he wanted. Justin called her and explained the situation. He could almost hear the smile in her voice. After hanging up he decided to take a shower and get comfortable. As he dried off he noticed something was missing. On closer inspection he realized that Josh’s things were gone from the bathroom. As he moved around the house there were hardly any reminders that Josh had ever lived with him. He sat on his bed and cried.
The next day recording had been a disaster. Josh had come in very early and laid down his parts. Justin was distracted and nothing was working. There was no chemistry between the group. It was obvious that Joey was angry with him and that Lance and Chris were trying not to take sides. Johnny called the day short and told them to come back tomorrow ready to work. He reminded them that they only had three weeks to finish the album.
Justin arrived at his mother’s for dinner. Her demeanor was so different, it was almost the same as before the engagement.
“Hello sweetie. How was recording?” she asked
“Not good.” he said
“What happened?” she asked
“Things are pretty bad right now. Josh isn’t recording with us.” Justin said
“I’m sure he’ll come around.” she said
“I guess.”
They talked a lot over dinner and Justin was happy to have his mother back. Afterwards they watched a movie and then Justin was leaving. After hugging him at the door she gave him a piece of paper with the name Mark and a number on it.
“What’s this?” Justin asked
“He’s a nice young man. Not in the business but very smart. I thought you might like to call and maybe get to know him.”
“Are you trying to set me up?” Jusaskeasked in shock.
“No. I just thought you might like to make a new friend.” she said
Justin was upset with her. He couldn’t believe she would do something like that.
“I just broke up with my fiancé. Why do you think I’m ready to see someone else?” he asked
“I just thought that you two might like each other. You don’t have to call if you don’t want too. I was just trying to help.” she said
“I know. I’m sorry I snapped; but I’m not ready yet.”
“Ok. I understand. Keep the number though for when you’re ready.” she said hugging him before he left.
Part 4
The next few weeks were strained at best. Josh only recorded with the group when necessary. Lynn showed up for lunch at least every two or three days and sent evil grins Josh’s way. Josh was not looking his best had hadn’t been eating well and sleep was something he only got when Joey slept with him and since Kelly moved in for the end of the pregnancy that wasn’t happening anymore. So three hours a night was a major accomplishment for him. When they were finally done with the album in March they decided on a tour schedule. They were going to actually tour before the album was released and they were meeting about which songs off the new album to do in concert. Once that had been decided it was time to start working with Wade on choreography.
Josh arrived at the compound with Joey and found Lance there already. Chris was next and Justin last.
“Ok guys I hope you are ready to work. We have a lot to choreograph so we need to get to work.” Wade said.
“Can’t wait.” Lance said sarcastically
“I’m glad to hear that Lance. Let’s get started” Wade says starting the first new dance.
When lunch rolls around Wade gives them two hours since they are going to be late getting out of rehearsal.
“Where do you guys want to eat?” Chris asks
“I’m going to moms.” Justin says leaving happy that they are back to normal.
“What about the rest of you?” Chris asked
“I don’t care, I just want to eat.” Lance says
“Me too. What about you C?” Joey asks
“Whatever.” he says
Lunch finds Josh not talking and the other three trying to get any sign of life out of him.
“Jace are you ok?” Chris asks
“I’ll be fine.” he says
“You look tired.” Chris said
“Haven’t been sleeping well. I’m sure it will pass.” JC said
“Look C, I know it’s none of our business and if you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine. I’m just wondering how long you’re going to torture yourself?” Lance said
“What do you mean?” JC asked
“I mean, it’s obvious that Justin isn’t letting the break up affect him the way you are and I don’t understand it.” Lance said
“I love him Lance. Even if he stopped loving me.” JC said
Conversation stopped then Josh told his friends he was going to take a cab back to Johnny’s and he’d see them later.
When Justin arrived back to the compound he noticed that Lance’s car was still gone. He assumed he’d be the only one in the room. When he walked in he saw Josh sitting against the wall.
“Hi.” Justin said
“Hi” Josh repeated.
“How have you been? We haven’t really talked lately.” Justin said
“I’m ok. Not as good as you but then you have your mother back so I’m sure you’re fine.” Josh spat out
“That’s not fair” Justin said
“Sorry. I guess I don’t really care about fair anymore.” JC said
“Josh don’t be like this. I want us to still be friends. When we first got together we promised to stay friends no matter what. Don’t you remember that.” Justin said.
“I remember and I’m still your friend Justin. I still care about you, hell I still love you, but I don’t like you very much and right now being the friends we used to be is out of the question.” Josh said honestly.
“I thought you would understand Josh. I didn’t do this to hurt you. I needed to find myself and I couldn’t do that with you.” Justin said.
“I’m trying Justin. I really am, I just can’t figure out what I did to make all the love we had disappear so quickly.”
“I didn’t stop loving you Josh. I just..I don’t know. My life was so out of control. It was like in a matter of months, everything changed. I was losing control and now I have it back. I’m doing what’s good for me.” Justin said
“If I thought you were doing what was best for you I’d be fine. But I think you’re doing exactly what Lynn wants you to do.” Josh said leaving the room
Justin thought about what Josh said. He knew that he loved having his mother back in his life and wondered if maybe he did give up Josh to have her back. Then he convinced himself that wasn’t the case. But the thought stuck in the back of his mind.
May was fast approaching and the new tour would be starting soon. A couple of months have passed since the break up and Josh is doing much better. He’s sleeping alone and spending more time with Joey, Chris and Lance. He and Justin talk more although not the same as before. They are leaving in two days to go to New Orleans to rehearse using their new and improved stage. It’s huge and the tour is going to be amazing. Josh is in his room at Joey’s house packing while Kelly and Joey fuss over the baby. She’s beautiful and Josh loves how great a dad Joey’s turning out to be. There was a knock on his door.
“Come in.” Josh said
“Hey man, what are you up to in here?” Joey said holding his daughter who was sleeping.
“Nothing. Just finishing packing up things for New Orleans.” Josh said walking over and stroking the baby’s back.
“Oh. I finished last night. So what are you doing tonight?” Joey asked
“I’m going to Chris’ to stay. I thought you and Kel could use some family time.”
“You don’t have to do that. You know we don’t mind having you here.” Joey said
“I know, but I promised Chris. He’s worried that because he and Justin are so close that he’s leaving me out. So basically I’m going to ease his guilt.” Josh said laughing with Joey.
“I see. Well we’re heading out to mom’s for a bit. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Joey said
“Ok. Tell everyone Hi.”
“Will do.”
Justin pulled into his mother’s driveway and noticed his step father’s car and a car he didn’t recognize. He got out and went to the door letting himself in.
“Mom. Dad. I’m here.” he yelled.
“In the living room.” Lynn shouted back.
Justin walked into the living room noticing his parents and a young man he didn’t know.
“Justin, this is Mark” Lynn said making introductions and smiling.
Justin shot his mother a very pointed look but she continued to smile. He was so mad at her. Mark was standing there with his hand out for Justin to shake which he did.
“It’s nice to finally meet you. Your mom’s told me a lot about you.” Mark said
“Really? And just what has she told you?” Justin asked looking at Lynn.
“Paul, could you help me in the kitchen?” she asked
“Sure” Paul said excusing himself.
Justin sat on the couch they vacated and Mark continued to sit in the chair opposite the couch.
“So Lynn says you guys are about to get back on the road.” Mark said
“Yeah. In a bit. We’re leaving for New Orleans to rehearse in a couple days.” Justin said
“Sounds like a great place to be. I love New Orleans.” Mark said
“It’s ok. Sometimes it can be a bit much.” Justin said
Mark could tell that Justin was struggling with something. He got the feeling that his being there wasn’t exactly what he wanted the way Lynn had suggested.
“I’m sorry.” Mark said
“For what?” Justin asked confused.
“Lynn said you wanted to get together and suggested that dinner here would be best. I get the feeling that you didn’t exactly ask for this.” Mark said
“I’m sorry. It’s really not your fault. I’m sure you’re a nice guy and all but I’m not over my last relationship just yet. I’m not sure if or when I will be.” Justin said
“It’s ok. Why don’t we just try and make it through dinner with as little discomfort as possible.” Mark offered.
“Sounds like a plan. Again I’m sorry about this.” Justin said
“It’s ok. Really.”
As they finished talking Lynn called them to the dining room for dinner. The meal was quiet and Lynn did most of the talking trying to drag Justin into a conversation with Mark. That didn’t work at all and the tension was thick. After dinner Lynn asked Paul to help her with the dishes.
“That’s ok Paul I’ll help mom.” Justin said
They were barely in the kitchen when Justin started.
“What the hell was tonight?” Justin asked
“Watch your mouth young man.” she said
“I asked you a question?” he said.
“For goodness sakes Justin. It’s been over two months since I gave you Mark’s number and you hadn’t called. So I thought it would be a good idea for you to meet him.” she said calmly
“Don’t you think I would have called if that’s what I wanted.” Justin asked
“You don’t know what you want. I’m sure that Mark will excuse your attitude so you should get out there and talk to him before he leaves.” she said
“Have you even been listening to me.” Justin asked
“Of course I’m listening to you.” she said.
“I don’t think so. Look mom, I don’t want you fixing me up on dates. when I’m ready to date I will. Do you understand? I’m leaving.”
Justin walked to the den.
“Night Paul. Mark it was nice meeting you.” Justin said shaking his hand
“You too. Mind if I walk out with you?” Mark asked
“No. not at all.”
When the two reached Mark’s car Justin was walking off.
“Justin” Mark said
“Yes?”
“I know tonight was a disaster. I’m sorry about that. I know you have my number so if you’d like to go out sometime give me a call. When you’re ready this time.” Mark said
“If I ever get ready I will.” Justin said walking to his car.
