Chapter Two: Kiss #1: A Failure
&*&*&
"You thirsty?"
Sirius shrugged his shoulders. "Not really. If you want something, feel free to get it. You know where everything is."
"Thanks," James replied, getting up. He made his way into the kitchen and returned a minute later with a glass of water. He carefully set it down on the coffee table and then blatantly stared at his best friend.
"Something wrong?" Sirius asked curiously.
Sill standing, James shook his head.
"Well then? What's on your mind?"
"Has anyone ever told you that you have the most beautiful hair in the world?" James asked quietly.
Sirius dropped the remote control and looked up at James. "What did you just say?"
"I said your hair is beautiful."
Sirius stood up and faced his best friend. They were several inches apart and watching each other carefully.
"Thank you," Sirius replied eventually. "Why did you say that?"
"Because it's the truth," James said firmly.
"No other reason?"
"I " James paused and stared into those gorgeous blue eyes.
Sirius turned his head slightly and pressed his lips against James'. Initially, James was far too shocked to respond, but within seconds, he was kissing Sirius back.
Sirius wrapped his arms around James' body and pulled his best friend closer while James' tongue gently found its way into Sirius' mouth. The kiss lasted for nearly two minutes-two minutes of pure bliss.
James pulled away first and took a small step back. "Why did you do that?"
Sirius dropped his hands from James' body. "Why did I do that? Because I wanted to, James! Wasn't that slightly obvious?"
James stepped back further and tugged at his hair, which was a definite nervous habit of his. "Wh-what?"
"You wanted it, too!" Sirius exclaimed. "I mean, why else would you have been going on about my hair?"
"Because you have nice hair!" James replied loudly. "I'm your best friend-remember? I'm allowed to compliment you without it havin mea mean anything."
"You pushed your tongue into my mouth," Sirius pointed out angrily. "You obviously were enjoying yourself, so-"
"Well, it was wrong!" James interrupted. "And, anyway, I have a boyfriend, so I probably shouldn't even be here with you."
Sirius looked shocked and crestfallen. He moved away from James and folded his arms over his chest. "You have a boyfriend? Why didn't you say anything earlier when I asked?"
"I-"
"And why in the hell does that mean that you can't even be here, James? We're best fucking friends!"
"I can't be here because because look what just happened!" James answered bitterly. "Merlin only knows what you'll pull next time. I'm leaving."
"You're wearing my clothes," Sirius said in an annoyed voice as he watched James head for the door. "I wonder what your beloved boyfriend will have to say about that?"
James pulled at his hair again. "I'll make sure you get your clothes back. I-I can't stay here now, Siri. Good-bye."
Sirius watched numbly as James hurried out the door and slammed it behind him. Groaning, Sirius threw himself down onto the couch and closed his eyes.

"How was Paris?"
"Fabulous, Siri! Guess how many museums we went to?"
Sirius bit off a piece of celery and stared at Remus. "Two million."
Remus raised an eyebrow while Lily rolled her eyes. "Excellent guess, Sirius," Lily muttered.
"Sorry," Sirius replied. "I'm not in the mood to guess."
"No kidding. You've been in a dreadful mood ever since we came over."
"I know, Moony. I can't seem to help it. Want some celery?"
Remus shook his head. "What's up with you and this health food-kick anyway?"
"Doesn't matter. So, how many museums did you go to?"
Lily sat down next to her husbandbsp;bsp;"We'll talk about that later, Sirius. I'm curious to hear about you and James."
Sirius started choking on a piece of celery and hurriedly drank some water. "What do you want to know? We're friends, all right? There you go. Moving on, did you-"
"Just friends? What happened to best friends?" Remus asked.
Sirius grimaced. He tossed the small stub of celery onto the table and put his head in his hands. "I kissed him, all right?"
"That's wonderful!" Lily exclaimed while Remus enthusiastically nodded his head.
Sirius snorted. "Hardly the word I would use to describe it. That happened the night of your wedding. We haven't spoken or seen each other since."
"What happened? What did he do?"
us lus looked up. "Well, Lily, after completely responding to the kiss, he freaked out and acted like it should never have happened in the first place, and then he told me that he has a boyfriend."
Remus and Lily gasped and glanced at each other while Sirius continued.
"We argued for a few minutes and then he left, slamming the door behind him. Wearing my clothes, too, I might add. Said he'd give 'em back, but that hasn't happened yet."
"Do you still care for him?" Lily asked.
Sirius rolled his eyes. "No, Lil. After wanting him for so long and then finally getting to kiss him, I decided that I really despise him and desperately want to date a nice, charming young lady. What in the hell do you think?"
Remus sighed, "No need to over-kill with sarcasm, Siri."
"Sorry," Sirius mumbled.
"'S okay. Look, why don't we talk to James and see-"
"NO!" Sirius bit his lip. "I know you're just trying to help, Rem, but please don't talk to him. He obviously isn't interested in me, so-"
"Oh please, Sirius. He is interested in you, and we're going to get to the bottom of this, all right?" Lily said as she stood up. "Perhaps we should pay him a visit right now."
"What are you two, anyway? Matchmakers? Please don't get involved. Just let it be."
"No, Siri. We want you and James to be happy," Remus explained. "We'll figure this out and then-"
"Bloody hell, Rem. Marriage has certainly changed you."
"What did you say?" Remus asked, raising an eyebrow.
Sirius winked and for the first time that afternoon smiled at his good friend. "All right, fine. Do what you think is best, but I would prefer you stay out of it, okay?"
"Preference noted," Lily replied. "We'll see you later this week, I'm sure. Until then, take care of yourself and for Merlin's sake, start eating more than just vegetables."
Sirius stood up and followed his friends to the door. "How do you know that's all I eat?"
Lily smiled. "I guess I don't."
"Exactly," Sirius said. "It's good to have both of you back, and I do want to hear about your honeymoon. Sorry I seemed so erm unenthusiastic about it earlier."
"Don't worry about it," Remus said as he walked into the hallway.
Sirius nodded and watched his friends leave.
&*&*&
"How was your trip?" James asked, opening the door and ushering Remus and Lily inside.
Lily put her hands on her hips and glared at James.
"That bad, huh?" James questioned. "Gee, Moony, you can't even keep her happy for the honeymoon, can you?"
"James Potter, you do not have a boyfriend, so why on earth did you tell Sirius that you did?" Lily looked almost furious.
James groaned and sat down on his red sofa. "Erm."
"Excellent answer, Prongs," Remus said, almost sympathetically. "Now you have to deal with the wrath of my wife!"
"Hey," Lily replied, staring at Remus with wide emerald eyes.
"Which is, of course, a wonderful thing," Remus said immediately as he placed a gentle kiss on Lily's forehead.
She smiled and took Remus' hand in her own.
James rolled his eyes and sprawled out on the couch. "You two can sit down, you know."
"Not on the couch apparently," Remus said, smirking.
James grinned, but made no effort to move. Remus sat down on a large armchair across from James and pulled Lily onto his lap.
"Seriously, James. Why did you say that? You don't have a boyfriend, do you?" Remus asked.
"You know I don't," James mumbled. "And I honestly don't know why I said it. I guess I got scared."
"Why?"
James glanced at Lily and then gazed at the ceiling again. "I dunno. I guess because we're talking about Sirius. How many men has he dated in the past couple years?"
"Recently he hasn't dated any," Remus pointed out.
"True," James agreed. "But, you know, I really care about him-"
"Obviously, since you totally blew him off and stormed out of his place," Remus commented wryly.
James ignored his friend and continued speaking. "He means a lot to me, but if we start a relationship, I don't want it to be something that only lasts a few months. As soon as he gets tired of me, he'll move on to someone better."
"There is no one better for him," Lily said softly. "And how come when we talked about him last week you didn't say any of this?"
p>Jap>James looked over at his friends. "Your wedding reception was hardly the place to bring it up, Lil.""I suppose so. You really hurt him, you know?" Lily said while Remus nodded in agreement.
"Did I?"
"Of course you did. It had to have taken some guts for him to make the first move," Remus said. "Even if it is Mr. Outgoing Sirius Black we're talking about. He really does care about you."
"Did he send you over here to lecture me?"
"On the contrary," Remus replied. "He asked us not to come."
James snorted and sat up. He ran his fingers through his hair, causing it to stick up more than usual. "I don't know what to do. I shouldn't have lied to him. It's not like I can go back and change the past, though."
"Yes, but you can go over to his place and explain to him why you did what you did."
"Right, Lil. Whatever."
Lily sighed and stood up. "You look tired, James. Try to get some sleep, and we'll help you work this out."
James nodded his head and pulled at his hair again. "What are you two, anyway, bloody matchmakers?"
Remus and Lily chuckled. "That's almost exactly what Sirius said," Remus grinned as he stood up.
James almost smiled. "Right, well .great minds think alike. You never did tell me about your trip."
"We'll tell you later," Lily promised. "We're tired and you look tired, too. We'll see ourselves out."
James looked lost in thought as his two friends left his flat and returned to their new home.
