Chapter 2: “I just called to say…”

“Can you talk?” Gemma asked Rob and felt her cheeks blush as she heard Rob’s voice on the other end.
“Yeah I can.” Rob cleared his throat and continued. “I’m at Emily’s. And I left the kitchen when seeing it was you…!”
”Oh good. I need to ask you something.” Gemma smiled as she pictured Rob standing outside Emily’s kitchen, hiding from everyone in order to keep the secret. Their secret.
“Oh really…” Rob felt himself smirk as a sudden thought popped up in his head. The image of Gemma smiling was enough for Rob’s entire being to shudder.
Gemma heard someone talk in the background, but didn’t recognize the voice as being Emily’s.
“Hang on a minute, please?” Rob asked in his usual sweet voice and Gemma heard talking going on between two men. She chuckled on the other end knowing that Rob had been caught. His voice returned and this time it sounded a bit more distracted.
“I can’t talk for long, hun.” She could almost hear him smiling. “They will be wondering about the fact that I can’t talk in front of them.”
“They?” Gemma asked confused.
“Yeah. Brad and Emily. They are kinda together now, I think.”
“Oh... Brad? He’s the tall one with the goatee, right?” Gemma asked wanting to make sure who they were talking about.
“Yup… that’s him. Mr. “Nosy”. So… make it quick.”
“Okay…” Gemma felt herself get all warm inside. “It’s really silly though. I just wanted to let you know that I can’t wait to see you tonight.”
“You are so sweet…” Rob chuckled, but kept the sound to a minimum as he felt his two friends sending him looks from behind. “I love you.”
“What did you just say?” Gemma’s heart skipped a beat as she heard him say the words.
“Oh… “Rob felt caught all over again. “Nothing… I just said that I… erm…”
“No… repeat it, please.” Gemma was begging him with a big grin on her face.
“I’m afraid to.” Rob started laughing. “But I do.”
“You what?”
“Love you.” He said in all seriousness.
“I love you too.” Gemma felt her voice whimper as she said the words out loud. She hadn’t even known that it was allowed for them to feel that way in this relationship. She thought that it was only fun in Rob’s eyes. She smiled to herself.
“This feels weird.” Rob continued.
“Yeah… it does. But in a good way.”
“Oh, no doubt about it.” Rob and Gemma laughed at the same time, and then there was silence.
“See you tonight then!” Gemma tried to hide the squeaks coming out of her.
“Most definitely. It’s going to be torture.” Rob said with a chuckle.
“What is?”
“Waiting to see you… I mean… there are at least 6 hours until then…”
“You make me smile, Rob.” Gemma blushed even more. “I love you.” Rob couldn’t help himself and started laughing again.
“Let’s not wear the words out. I want to be able to say it tonight as well.”
They said their goodbyes and hung up – with big smiles on their faces.

The anticipation of seeing Gemma was almost too much for Rob to handle. He couldn’t wait to see her. Especially after what had been said this morning. He didn’t know why he had said it. But he was kind of glad that he did. It had been one of those outbursts that he rarely suffered from. But he was happy that it hadn’t scared her off. He smiled to himself and looked at the clock. ’20 minutes to go’ – he felt the warmth spread inside of his stomach. Now he only hoped that she would be okay with the fact that he had told Brad and Emily about their relationship. But how could he keep hiding something like this from his friends? They would eventually catch on. But with all the things that had been going on among them – he hadn’t wanted to bring any of this up. But now…
The doorbell rang and Rob was pulled back into reality. He wondered who that could be. He hoped that it was no one in particular – no one was allowed to ruin his night with Gemma. He got to the door, and opened it. Before a single thought could enter his mind, he felt a couple of arms wrap around him, and it didn’t take a second before he recognized the embrace.
“Oh my god, what are you doing here?” He said feeling his heart caught in his throat. “We’re not supposed to meet before…” His sentence was cut short by her lips meeting his.
“I couldn’t stand the waiting another minute.” She laughed excitedly. “I needed this.” She kissed him again and they both felt the amazing passion take over.
“I have to tell you something…”Rob said trying to catch his breath.
“What is that?” Gemma smirked at him and closed the door behind her with her foot, still having her arms wrapped around his waist.
“I told Brad and Emily about us…” Rob looked at Gemma waiting to see her reaction.
“You did?” She smiled. “Why?”
“I couldn’t just join those two and then not show them how affected I had been from our conversation.” Rob smiled back.
“I know… I know…” Gemma laughed and pulled him in for another kiss.
“So it’s okay with you?” Rob asked when their lips were separated.
“Yes!” Her smile widened. “Of course it is. I don’t know if I could’ve kept it locked up either…”
They both stood in silence with smiles on their faces – not knowing quite how to consume the things that had been said during the day. Without saying a word their lips met again, and nothing had ever felt better or more right.
