Chapter Two:
They stopped at a red light just outside the ball field. “So your brother is a fan…does that mean that you’re not?”
“Ha! I’m the one who introduced him to your music.”
The light turned green.
“So you do then. You don’t want my autograph?”
“Just meeting you is enough. Hell, I’m even driving you to my family’s restaurant. How many people can say that they have done that.”
“Not many.”
There was an awkward silence.
“God what happened to the easiness that we had at the field?” She asked him.
“I was wondering the same thing.” He stated with a grin.
The easiness was back.
“So, what else do you like to do besides softball?”
“I like to sing to the stars.” She stopped at another red light.
“To the stars?” He was confused.
“Yes.” She paused and looked at him. “At night, when I’m alone I go outside and I sing to the stars.” She turned forward again when the light changed. “Can I explain it when we get there?”
“Yeah, sure.” He paused. “So what else do you do?”
“I draw and dance.”
“What kind of dancing?”
“All kinds really. Depends on my mood I guess. Dancing helps me stay in shape for ball.” Tai grinned. “And it’s fun.”
They pulled into the parking lot and she parked in the reserved parking. They got out and went inside.
“Good afternoon Tai. How was your game?” The hostess asked.
“Exciting.” She replied. “Is my room open Gabby?”
“Yes it is. Would you like me to show you the way?”
Tai rolled her eyes, “Gabby, you ask me that every time that I come here and my answer is always the same.”
“Well I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t offer. Would you at least like a server?”
She grabbed Marshall’s hand and commented over her shoulder to Gabby, “No thanks Gabby. I can handle it.”
“Come on. Lets go through the main dinning.” She grinned.
“Isn’t that where all the people are?”
Tai stopped suddenly and turned to look up at him. “Yes. That’s the point Mr. Marshall.”
“I thought I said—”
She cut him off and started walking again, “You said not to call you ‘Mr. Mathers’. Not ‘Mr. Marshall’.” She squeezed his hand when he laced their fingers
They passed many people on the way to their destination. The regulars said hello, while the new ones stared.
“Tai!” A woman’s voice shouted.
Tai and Marshall turned towards the voice. “Hey mama.” Tai smiled at her. She was a thin lady with dark hair and eyes.
Her mother reached them. “So, how did your game go? Did you win?”
Tai rolled her eyes. “I thought that you had manners mama.”
Tai’s mother looked over at Marshall. “Oh! I’m so sorry she’s right. Where are my manners? I’m Clara, Tai’s mother.”
“I’m Marshall.” He grinned at Tai.
“So Tai…” Clara waited.
“Right, we won four to three.”
“Congratulations. When do you get your trophy?” Clara asked.
“We get them at practice tomorrow.”
“Well that’s good, that’s good. So…” She looked at the two of them and then at their joined hands. Clara smiled. “Is this your new boyfriend Tai? You didn’t tell me that you were dating.”
“Oh, no mama, Marshall and I aren’t dating.”
Clara raised her brows, “Then why, dear, are you holding hands.”
“Oh.” Tai said and let go. She looked at Marshall, “Sorry.”
He shrugg“I d“I didn’t mind.”
Clara laughed, “Oh, I like him.”
“Where’s daddy?”
“He’s in the kitchen dear. The new chef started today.”
“I still can’t believe that you fired Winslow. He was the best cook we ever had.”
Clara shrugged and then looked over at Gabby. She was trying to get her attention. “Well, I had better go dear, it looks like Gabby needs some help.” She smiled at them botit wit was nice meeting you Marshall.”
He nodded as she walked off.
“Sorry about that.”
“It’s alright. It could have been worse.”
They continued their walk to the back of the restaurant and went through the door in the corner.
“You want something to eat?” Tai asked as she sat down at the only table in the room. It had four chairs. He sat across from her.
“Yeah, sure. What do you want?”
“Do you like peanut butter and jelly?”
He laughed. “You come to this expensive restaurant and you want to get peanut butter and jelly?”
“It’s not just any peanut butter and jelly…they toast it.” She wiggled her eyebrows at him.
He laughed again. His phone rang. “Hang on a sec Tai.”
“I’m just gonna go wash up over there.” She pointed to the sink in the left corner by the door.
He nodded at her and answered the phone. “What?”
“Such manners you have Marshall.” She tsked at him.
He grinned at her as she walked over to the sink.
[Yo Marsh where you at man?]
He rolled his eyes. “Proof. What do you want? I’m about to have a wonderful meal of toasted peanut butter and jelly.”
Tai laughed loudly as she sat back down.
[Yo man you at a girls house?] Marshall could hear the grin in his voice.
“No Proof, but I am at her family’s restaurant.” He winked at Tai.
There was silence. [Why?]
“Proof, did you need something or did you just call to bitch?”
[Nah, man. I just called to see if you were gonna be at the studio later. Someone is coming to put some tracks down.]
“Yeah, I’ll be there. What time?”
“At 2:00.”
He looked at his watch. 1:00.
“Yeah alright. I’ll see ya then.” He hung up.
“Do you have to leave?” Tai asked.
“Not right now. But I got to be at the studio by two.”
“Oh. Then you can’t stay long.” She looked down at the table.
“You wanna come with?”
Tai looked up at him and smiled. “Really?”
“Yeah.n stn It’s cool.”
“Yeah. That’d be great. But I’d have to change first.”
“It’s ok. You can wear what you got on
“You sure about that?”
“Yeah. It’s fine.” He assured her.
“Ok then. So how about those sandwiches?” She got up and poked her head through another door. “Bobby!” She yelled.
“Yeah what?” Marshall heard a girl’s voice.
“Can you make two PBJs?”
“Yeah sure it’ll be right out babe.”
“Great thanks.” She looked back at Marshall. “Do you want a soda?”
“Coke if ya have it.”
“And two cokes Bobby.”
She sat back down.
“What?” Marshall was looking at her with a confused grin.
“‘Babe’?” He asked.
“Oh, that. Bobby’s a les. She calls all the girls babe.” Tai shrugged with a smile.
“Right. That explains it then.”
The door opened and a girl stepped through with their food and cokes.
“Here you go hun.” She placed their food in front of them.
“Thanks Bobby.” Bobby left.
“That was quick.” Marshall said.
“She already had two ready. That’s what I usually eat but I’m not that hungry today.” She explained to him.
They started eating. “So you were gonna tell me about why you sing to the stars.”
