Sound check had ended hours ago, and right now the band was backstage getting ready to go on. Liz was at the bar getting some water to bring back. There was only 15 minutes until they had to go on. The bartender handed her the bottles, and she began walking toward the backstage area.
When she got there she handed the band their water and looked them all over. None of them seemed too nervous, which was good. They were nervous of course, but not too much, just enouo geo get the adrenaline pumping. She knew from personal experience that adrenaline was a good thing when you had to perform. It made you give that much more, when on stage.
“So are you guys ready?” she asked them with a smile.
This was an important gig. She had managed to get them a gig in one of the hottest bars in London. A lot of people from the business came here, which gave the band a chance to show of their stuff to important people and it gave Liz a chance to network. Having contacts on the inside was very important. It was all about knowing the right people.
“Hell yeah!” the guys shouted.
Liz smiled. This was what she loved about her job. The excitement before a gig, the electricity surrounding the people getting ready to go on stage and play as if their life depended on it. Always trying to make it the best gig they’ve played yet.
“Alright guys!” she said, “You better get to it!”
They all stood up and they gathered in a circle. They always did this. They didn’t say anything. They simply gathered, getting their collective juices flowing. Focussing on what they were about to do, feeding off each other’s energy. This was their ritual.
After about 30 seconds they separated and some of the guys gave Liz a kiss on the cheek before going on stage. This was also a ritual. Some of the guys had gotten it in their heads that Liz was some sort of good luck charm. If they didn’t give her a kiss on the cheek before going on stage, they were convinced they would be crap.
Liz wasn’t a very superstitious person, but she indulged them.
“Break a leg!” she shouted after their retreating backs, as they ran for the entrance to the stage.

“So where are we going?” Orlando asked as they drove away from his house.
“Well, I was thinking maybe we could go to the cool place, you know the one we went to last time we were here!” Brie said excitedly turning around to talk to Orlando.
Orlando laughed at how excited Brie was. She was like a little kid on Christmas morning.
“Sure, but why are you so excited to go there?” he asked chuckling.
“She heard there was some band playing.” Elijah chimed in, “Apparently they’re supposed to be very good!”
“Ah! That explains it then!” Orlando laughed.
He was already feeling better. He was actually excited to go out now, which was a huge step up from what he’d been feeling earlier in the day.
“So what are they called?” Orlando asked.
“Huh?” Brie looked confused for a second, “Oh the band?”
Orlando nodded, laughing at her.
“You know, I have no idea!” Brie exclaimed as if she’d only just realized.
“You are so weird!” Elijah said giggling.
“Yes, but that’s one of the many reasons you love me!” Brie said in a very serious voice.
Elijah leaned over and gave her a very wet kiss,
“You know it babe!”
Orlando rolled his eyes and groaned,
“I’m gonna be third-wheel-guy tonight aren’t I?” he asked rather sullenly and pouted.
Elijah looked at him in the rear view mirror and laughed,
“Orlando sweetie, I know it’s very difficult to be single and having thousands of girls throwing themselves at you, but you’re just gonna have to suck it up and deal with it!” he said in a very motherly tone.
“Oh that’s funny Wood!” Orlando said and smacked Elijah on the back of his head.
“Are you saying you’d rather be single than with me?” Brie asked Elijah sadly.
Orlando sat back in his seat and looked rather smug. Elijah’s eyes grew wide as he struggled to find the right words to say.
“No! I mean…no! It’s just…I was just…” He didn’t get any more words out before Brie and Orlando both burst out laughing.
“Oh ha ha!” Elijah said pouting. The pout didn’t last long though, as Brie and Orlando both kept laughing and he found himself laughing along with them.
Before long they parked their car near the club they were planning on going to and they made their way towards the entrance.

Once inside the club, they noticed that it was packed. Well, they had actually figured as much when they saw the line of people waiting to get in, but still, it was packed. In fact it was so packed Orlando doubted they’d be able to get a table. Elijah voiced his thoughts,
“Do you think we should go somewhere else? I mean, there’s no way we’re gonna get a table here!”
Brie looked at him and frowned,
“I wanna hear the band!” she looked around for a couple of seconds before pointing to the other end of the room, “Look! Over there! See, there’s only one person at that table! Why don’t we just ask if we can join?”
Elijah looked to Orlando who shrugged, and then turned back to Brie,
“Lead the way!” he shouted over the music.

Liz was quietly enjoying a beer and listening to the band performing, when she noticed the people making their way toward her table. She wondered what they wanted, as they didn’t look like any of the people she knew from different record companies.
As they got closer, she realized that she had seen the two guys before. They were actors in fact, they were two of her favourite actors. She had actually had a crush on one of them, but she would never admit that to anyone. Suddenly they were there.
“Hi!” the girl said, “We were wondering if maybe we could join you?”
Liz was stunned. She honestly hadn’t expected that. But as she took a look around the club, she realized that there weren’t any available tables left, so she got why they were there.
“Um…sure!” she said smiling.
She moved the few papers she had lying on the table to make room for them.
As they all sown, own, the girl continued chatting,
“Thank you so much! I really wanted to hear the band! By the way I’m Brie!”
“Honey, breathe!” Elijah said chuckling.
Brie glared at him and went back to talking to Liz,
“That’s Elijah and that guy over there” she pointed to Orlando, “is Orlando.”
“I’m Liz.” Liz introduced herself smiling at them.
They all seemed very nice, and she had instantly taken a liking to Brie, simply because the girl seemed to bubbly and nice.
“So are you here with anyone?” Brie asked after they lis listened to the band for a couple of minutes.
“I’m with the band.” Liz replied.
Before Brie could ask another question Orlando leaned forward, smirking and asked,
“Groupie?” He raised an eyebrow.
Liz glared at him, while Brie smacked him in the back of his head. Elijah was simply trying to hold back the giggles because he knew Brie would tell Orlando off when they left the club.
“No, actually I’m the manager. If I was a groupie I probably wouldn’t be sitting back here, would I?” Liz replied. Still glaring she turned away from him and faced the stage.
“Just ignore him,” Brie said, “I don’t know what crawled up his ass and died.”
Liz nodded and took a sip of her beer. She was actually kind of surprised by the way he had acted. From what she knew of him, he was supposed to be the sweetest guy, and then he threw a comment like that at her.
“Hey, I’m gonna go grab a drink, do you guys want anything?” Elijah asked as he got out of his seat.
“I’ll have a beer.” Orlando said, “You buying?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, but the next round’s on you!”
“I’ll just have a soda!” Brie said, “I’m driving home remember?”
“Right. How about you Liz?” Elijah asked.
Liz was surprised he had asked, so the only thing she managed to say was, “Huh?”
“Do you want a drink?” Elijah asked again, smiling at her.
“Oh! Er…no thanks, I’ve got one!” She said, smiling as she raised her glass.
“Alright! I’ll be right back!” Elijah said as he sprinted toward the bar.
They sat for a while in silence, before Orlando spoke up,
“Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be rude!” He touched Liz’ hand as he said this.
She turned to look at him and managed a small smile,
“Don’t worry about it.” She said, sounding more chipper than she actually felt.
This wasn’t the first time someone had mistaken her for a groupie, but every time it really managed to piss her off. Why was it people couldn’t believe a girl was managing a rock band? Why was a girl automatically labelled a groupie if she said she was with the band?
“So you’re a manager?” Brie said, trying to get the conversation going. She hated those uncomfortable silences. “That’s really cool!”
“Yeah, well, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.” Liz smiled a genuine smile this time.
“So how many bands do you manage?” Orlando asked. He was actually curious.
“Only this one. It takes too much time to manage more than one band, and right now I can’t afford that.” Liz answered, “I only work with the band on my free time. They’re not big enough that I can actually make a living on it yet.”
Elijah returned from the bar, carrying drinks, and they continued talking about all kinds of stuff.
