CHAPTER 2
“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” Jessica says standing in front of a department store dressing room mirror.
“What? The outfit or going on the radio?” Vicki replies while sitting on a bench outside the dressing room and flipping through a magazine.
“Well … both!” Jessica replies with a snort. “Look at me,” she says opening the door. “I look like a hooker!” She stands in the doorway wearing the black miniskirt, tight red belly shirt, and short black jacket Vicki had picked out for her to try on.
“What are you talking about? You look great!” Vicki says trying to reassure her friend. “Your body was meant to wear clothes like this!”
Jessica glares down at Vicki. “Just because I’m a size 4 doesn’t mean I should dress like a hooker!” she says sarcastically with her hands on her hips. She turns back around toward the mirror.
Vicki exhales loudly, slaps the magazine on the bench beside her, and stands up. “You want to look nice for him, don’t you?” Vicki asks walking forward to stand behind her friend. Jessica gives Vicki a quick nod with wide eyes. Vicki rests her hands on Jessica’s shoulders and looks at her reflection. At five-foot-nine Vicki stands a whole 5 inches taller than Jessica. “Orlando will love this,” she says in a soft voice. “Trust me.”
Jessica lets out a little nervous laugh. “That’s what I’m afraid of,” she says wrapping her arms around her bare midriff.
*~*~*
“You did what?!” Orlando Bloom says furiously into his cell phone. All around him bustles the cast and crew of the movie he is on location shooting.
Orlando’s agent, Bryan, sits at his desk lounging back in his chair. “I booked you to appear on the Bob and Tom show a week from Friday,” he says matter-of-factly tapping a pen on the desk.
“Bry, why would you do that without consulting me first? We’ve been through this,” Orlando says trying to speak calmly.
“Because I knew you’d say ‘No’,” Bryan retorts.
Orlando pinches the bridge of his nose and closes his eyes. “Please tell me you didn’t do this because you’re still on your little ‘damage control’ mission over what happened with Keira?”
“No. No, I didn’t,” Bryan replies slowly. “Not entirely.”
“Not entirely,” Orlando mocks as he runs his fingers through the top of havy, avy, brown hair. He drops the phone to his side while Bryan pleads his case.
“Now come on, Orli,” Bryan replies sitting up in his chair and resting his elbows on the desk. “Keira’s been dragging you through the mud for the past two weeks. You won’t go on Leno. You made me cancel Letterman. You’ve got to do something about this.”
Orlando brought the phone back up to his ear long enough to hear the last sentence. “What? What do you want me to do about it? Make up stories to get back at her just like she is to get back at me? Forget it!” he snaps.
“No. That’s not what I’m saying,” Bryan replies trying to calm his client. “I just think that the public needs to hear your side of the story.”
“No. No they don’t because it’s none of their business,” Orlando snaps. After a long pause he finally asks, ”Well … what does ‘not entirely’ mean?”
Bryan sighs and calmly says, “A woman in Ohio wrote a letter to The Bob and Tom Show saying that if you agree to meet her best friend on their show she’ll donate $1000 to one of your favorite charities.”
With a small laugh Orlando says, ”You’re kidding, right?”
“No mate,” Bryan replies.
“But…why? Why would someone do that just to meet me?” Orlando asks confused.
“I danno,” Bryan replies lounging back in his chair and holding up a faxed copy of the letter in front of him. “The woman that wrote the letter said that her best friend is going through a hard time right now and it would mean a lot if she could just meet you.”
After a pause Orlando whispers, “Wow.” A smile begins to creep across his face knowing that Bryan has won this argument. “I guess I can’t say ‘no’ to that now can I?”
“No. I guess you can’t,” Bryan replies triumphantly with a smile.
