Chapter 1
********* Part 1
Twenty Years Later
Jade looked at his fencing instructor in disgust. "Is that all you've got?"
Markus{2} sat on the ground shaking his head. "I have nothing left to teach you, my Prince. You've finally bested me."
Jade's face reflected the shock he felt. He didn't think he'd ever beat Markus. Since he hadn't started lessons until he was five, two years later than all of the other boys in his age group, it had taken him longer to catch up. "I'm done?"
Markus got to his feet and patted his princling student on the shoulder. "Yes, my Prince. You're finally done with your training and you can take your place as your father's lead general."
The young prince nodded and allowed himself to be lead out of the fencing room. From there he was taken to his father's private audience chambers where his tall father, the King, stood looking proudly, if wearily out of one of the large windows.
"My King, joyous news." Markus said as he swept a low bow as he pressed Jade forward.
"Yes, instructor?" the King didn't turn, only shifted his head so that his profile was presented to his son and Markus.
"Your son has completed his training... His lessons are done. He has now beaten me in fencing and in open combat both with weapons and without." Markus kept his head down even though he had risen from his bow.
"Very good. My son, you will share your news with the main hall tonight at a feast in your honor." the King never turned all the way around, but then Jade hadn't expected him to. Everyone in the entire kingdom knew that King Obsidian refused to look at his son because of Jade's frighteningly similar face to that of the dead royal consort. It hurt the king to see the face of his dead love reflected in that of their only child. Jade could remember the last time his father had looked him fully in the face. It had been the eve of Jade's fourteenth birthday. They had been sitting in their private parlor taking a break from lessons and politics, respectively. Jade had been laughing at something his father had told him when he noticed the king had paled extremely.
"Father?" Jade had rose and gone to his father and placed his hand upon his father's arm, only to have him draw away as if burnt.
"Leave me, son. Now!" his father had demanded of him and Jade ran from the room to get a guard to bring a healer for his father.
The next morning he had received the message that he was not to approach his father for any reason and when he did, Jade was to do so with his face down turned and never look his father in the eye again.
Since that day Jade had never meet his father's eyes and grew accustomed to the King referring to him as son and never by his name.
"Of course, Father." Jade bowed and with Markus at his side he left the room with a heavy heart. He knew what was coming. It would be his duty to lead the armies to war. But Jade had a secret only his best friend, a kitchen boy he had meet his first week at the royal courts, Hunter knew. Jade hated war. He hated killing. But one thing made him agree with the war his father's kingdom had been fighting. A White Wing had killed his other father and for that he would over come his detest of killing and go the front line and there he would kill them all.

Jade sat listening to a minstrel playing some horrid love song and tried not to gag or start playing with one of his wings, just to stay awake.
Finally, just when the royal heir was going to have the singer's head put on a platter his father raised his hand for silence and the room went quiet instantly.
"My son has passed his final test. He is now a man in the eyes of our people."
The court cheered until the king held up his hand and silence came again. "It is also my pleasure to tell you, my people, that a peaceful solution has come in our war with the White Wings."
There was no sound to that, everyone was too stunned. They had been at war for two decades. Why stop now on the eve of victory?
"The King of the White Wings has been killed." the crowd roared it's approval and then quieted at the king's raised hand again.
"The Queen has agree to give her only child as a bondmate for my son... Joining the two kingdoms under my son's rule when Queen Gazella and I have taken to the Great Southern Winds." The court didn't say anything as they looked to Prince Jade who sat there with his eyes wide and his mouth hanging half open.
"Father, what have you done?" Jade whispered after his father had finished and Jade had found out his fate. He was to be married to a White Wing... A royal one no less.

Jade paced at the end of his bed and Hunter, who had just found out about the wedding, was sitting on the bed watching him. "You know, this might actually be a good thing, Jade."
"How? I'm going to be married to the White Wing heir... how can that be a good thing?" Jade asked as he glared over at his friend.
"That's just the thing, Jade. You're not marrying the nasty thing... The White Wing heir is to be your bondmate. That's not a marriage to me." Hunter told Jade as he swung his legs with glee in his eyes.
Jade stopped his pacing and thought about it before getting a malicious smile. "That's right... Generally one gets married when one takes a bondmate... but it's not required. Hunter, you're as smart as the court healer!"
The prince started pacing again as he thought out his plan. "Yeah... yeah... That's what I'll do. Take him or her as my bondmate and keep them like a whore... It'll be priceless and will hurt the White Wings worse than killing them. I'll turn their precious royal child into nothing more than a bed warmer... My bed warmer."
Hunter frowned. That hadn't been what he meant, but he could tell by the look in Jade's eyes there would be no talking him out of it. What he had meant was to take the other royal as a bondmate and ship him/her off to one of the farthest royal homes and forget the whole thing.
Jade went on pacing through most of the night and as he finished his plans, the sun was rising. With the light of the new day to bless his sleep, Jade curled up on his bed beside Hunter, who had given up and fallen asleep long before, and went to sleep.
