Chapter Two: How to Escape Crazy Stalkers
Karen woke up the next morning on the floor of her apartment. For some strange reason, she was sleeping on the blow-up mattress. She had no idea how she got there in the first place. Rolling over, she spotted the clock and realized it was time to open the shop. The other night seemed like a blur to her and she didn’t know why she thought she was forgetting something. Sora mewed and climbed onto the mattress, licking her hand when he reached her.
“Alright, alright! I’m up!!” She gets up and ties her kinky black hair back into a long ponytail. She walked over to the door, completely disregarding the fact that there was a twenty-seven year old actor sleeping on her couch.
The keys that hung from the hook near the apartment door, were now in her hand. Karen slowly walked down the stairs, still in her black pajamas and Led Zeppelin t-shirt. She turned the sign over in the door window as the clock hit ten o’clock. The day was going to be a long one, she could tell. She unlocked the doors and then trudged over to the cash register.
“Here we go….” She sighed, sitting down in a chair behind the register.
A couple of customers came in and bought CD’s. A young boy bought a self-teaching booklet for the piano. Two teen girls were looking at basses as eleven thirty rolled around. Sora came down the stairs and joined Karen at the cash register. That was when it hit her. She did have a guest last night. And he was still upstairs. She laughed at herself for forgetting.
Noon came soon and she put a sign on the door that said she was on break. Karen ran upstairs. The bundle of blankets was still on the couch where she had left him unknowingly. It groaned as if it was alive and she laughed because he was still sleeping. He rolled over and sat up, rubbing his eyes.
“Good morning.” He said, yawning and ruffling his hair.
“Good afternoon.” She corrected him and walked over to the couch, “You sleep like a rock!” She laughed.
He laughed as well, “Sorry about that. I’m guessing I’m too late for breakfast.” Orlando grinned at her.
“Yep….. but help yourself to anything you can find in the kitchen. I gotta get back down to the shop and get ready for Mike.” She turned around, about to head down.
“Boyfriend?”
“No….. more like, stalker.”
“Why don’t you call the police? Tell them he’s bothering you?” He stood up.
She sighed, “Cause, he doesn’t bother me. He just comes here at one and leaves at one thirty. Eve chases him away.” He gave her a strange look, “Just….. trust me.”
“Alright, alright. But if something bad happens, don’t kill me if I say I told you so.” He waved his hand in the air, brushing the subject away, and then walked into the kitchen.
She chuckled and shook her head at his comment. Karen made her way down the stairs, and then suddenly stopped. She had a realization. Orlando had slept on her couch with men’s pajama pants (no doubt her father’s) and no top. There was a shirtless man in her apartment! Now, she couldn’t wait for Mike to get there.
The sign on the door was changed back to “Open” as Karen sat behind the register again. Sora sat on the desk next to her hand, just begging to be pet. No one came into the store for a while and she wondered if she should have grabbed lunch before the actor ransacked her fridge. She sighed, hunger rushing through her.
“Need any help?” She turned to the voice, seeing Orlando dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt; the same as last night. She smiled, seeing that he only had socks on his feet.
“Sure. You can watch the register, while I make a sandwich for myself.” She jumped away from the register and towards the stairs as he casually walked to where she was sitting, “Oh!” She spun back around, “And DON’T touch anything!” And with that, she bounded up the stairs.
“He laughed to himself, “She’s a cute one, eh Sora?” He ruffled the kitten’s hair. “I just hope no fans see me here. I don’t feel like being trampled to death today.”
Orlando looked quickly at the door, curious as to when the next customer would waltz in. He sighed as he saw no one there and then looked back at the stairs. A sound reached his ears from the stairs. He heard something like an elephant falling down them. Karen appeared at the bottom, a huge smile on her face.
“You like to act like an innocent child, don’t you?” He grinned at her.
“Well, only when I’m happy. I’m actually a realist at heart.” She walked over to the counter, setting the plate with her sandwich on it.
“Why the sudden change in pace?” He raised an eyebrow,
“Well, I had a brilliant beyond brilliant idea.”
“He didn’t like the sound of that, “Uh oh, what are you plotting against me?”
She laughed, “Can you just pretend to be my boyfriend when Mike gets here?”
He chuckled, “Sure.” She smiled again.
“Uhhh… one more thing…”
“…What is it?” He crossed his arms over his chest.
“Umm… never mind. That’d be taking it too far.” She blushed.
He raised an eyebrow again, “Ok…”
“Well, you know how to be in a relationship, right?” She looked up at him.
“Yes I do. Why? You’ve never had a boyfriend before?” She shook her head yes, “Ok then. Just be affectionate, ok?”
“Sure. I can do that. Oh, look! Here he comes!”
“Quickly! Come here! We have to make this convincing.” She ran over to him and he took her in his arms, “Put your arms around my neck and close your eyes.” She did what he said and Orlando pulled her close.
His head turned to her neck and lightly bit it. His tongue lapped at her skin, making her fingers grip at his shirt. She never expected this to feel so good. He knew what this must have looked like, but he did not really care. Karen was a friend and he was doing her a favor. He would be safe, so long as Kate didn’t walk in now.
Mike walked in, his eyes settling on the two, and he smirked, trying to hide his hurt feelings, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, you two!! Behind a cash register is no place to get hot and heavy now!” he chuckled as they pulled away from each other.
Karen’s face was bright red and she couldn’t stop rubbing her neck, ‘He better not have left a mark!’ She thought.
Orlando looked at Mike. He had red, curly hair and blue eyes. His skin was adorned with freckles and zits. No wonder she didn’t like him.
“Karen, who is this guy?” Mike asked.
“Uhhh…” She could not get the words out, “H-he’s my new boyfriend…” She said, still blushing wildly.
“Oh… nice. Ummm… I think I should go now… I’ll see you around, Karen!” He turned and left, walking a little faster than usual.
“I sort of feel bad for the guy.” Orlando watched him leave.
“Don’t. I’ve already told him thousands of times that I didn’t like him and that I also didn’t want a boyfriend.”
“Really?”
“Well… I want one… but not him… That’s for sure.” She shrugged and rubbed her neck. Her eyes went wide, “Did you leave a mark!?”
“I don’t know….. I think I did.”
Her face looked like a strawberry now. She rushed upstairs and pulled a sweatshirt off a coat hanger. She slipped it on, covering the mark. Karen then walked back down the stairs.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized.
“Don’t worry about it. No one really cares.”
