I have been having contractions since 6 a.m. and I was getting nervous about having this baby. The contractions were so far apart, that they weren't really worth timing, but around seven they began to pick up. I was as much upset as I was worried, today is Vin’s birthday and I had a lot planned. I woke Vin, with the contraction now thirty minutes apart we decided to have breakfast. Down in the kitchen Vin, shared with the baby his vast knowledge of potato slicing for hash browns. Every so often I would get a contraction but they were still at least fifteen minutes apart.
"You are such a brilliant cook, baby," I said kissing him softly. "Can you handle cutting those potatoes without chopping your finger off, while I go to the bathroom?" I asked with a giggle.
"I got this," he said, grabbing the knife and slamming it into the potato.
I went into the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror for a second, all of a sudden something warm ran down my legs. Examining myself I thought I had wet my pants but the liquid was white, milk colored. I went into the kitchen and told Vin that my water had broken. He began running around like a chicken with his head cut off. He cut off the stove and ran for the closet, grabbed our bags, jackets and ran out of the door. Meanwhile, I was still sitting on the couch. I picked up the phone and called Chereese. I needed her to come over and put the food away. He came running back into the door just as I hang up the phone,
"I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm thinking. I don't know what I'm doing," he said.
"It's okay, calm down," I told him.
He helped me up and started toward the door, not realizing that I was still in my night gown and didn’t have on any pants.
“Vin baby,” I said. “I need some pants.”
Slowly taking me back to the sofa, he ran upstairs and returned with a pair of sweat pants, helped me slip them on and we continued on to the car. I didn’t want to go out in my slippers but when the next contraction hit, I was ready to go. By the time we got to the car I had to stop for a second and catch my breath. It seemed the more I moved the quicker the contractions came. After a short breather Vin helped me into the car, Chereese came out carrying Shennet.
"I will be there as soon as I take care of the house and drop Shennet off, okay." A big smile spreads across her face. "I will bring the car seat." She screamed after the car.
By the time we arrived at the hospital the contractions were kicking my ass. Vin had become a nervous wreck and I am sure my bitching and moaning didn’t help. We’d taken the drive to the hospital before to time it but I swear it never had so many bumps. We pulled up to the emergency room and Vin ran out of the car and brought the people in the attendants to me. He looked so pale I thought he was going to loose it before this ordeal was over. He was talking to me and saying very sweet things as I screamed and called him dirty names. I swear I was going through every emotion you can have, all at once. Chereese popped in about an hour later, she came over and grabbed my hand.
"Come on and get my little boy out here." She said laughing.
"Well, since he’s yours, could you please push him out!" I said to her with a scowl.
Vin was sitting next to me holding my other hand but after seven hours of labor the baby still hadn't come and he nodded off in the recliner. My nurse continued to offer me something for the pain but I was determined to have this baby natural. When the doctor checked me two hours later, I was fully dilated and the baby was crowning. They scurried around the room getting things together and the doctor prepared me for pushing. Vin has left his position by my side and is now fumbling around with the camera. Just as it slips from his hands Chereese took it and sent him back by my side. Vin was a beautiful coach, he remembered everything from our birthing class and didn’t miss a beat. His eyes almost popped out of his head when he saw the babies head come out.
"His head is out! His head is out!" he shouted.
"It's a boy! 4:56 p.m." The nurse screamed.
Tears of joy ran down both of our faces. He gave me a long passionate kiss and ran over to visit with his new baby boy. Chereese turn into a photographer and began snapping pictures like crazy.
As they cleaned him up, I could catch a glimpse of his hair or a foot but I couldn't see his face. I wanted to see his face. Just as I thought they were wheeling him over to me, they took my baby, Vin and Chereese out of the door. I could hear the doctors yelling something but I couldn't understand. Panic set in immediately. A sharp pain shot through my body and I lashed out in pain.
"Something is wrong." One of the doctors said. "She’s contracting but the placenta is not delivering."
The doctor began to examine me. She pushed back on her rolling stool, took a look and told me I had to push again.
"We have another baby crowning." She explained as people crowded around me. I was became hysterical. "Lakeshia, please push!"
I began to push but I was quickly losing steam. The doctors were shouting and they were preparing to take me out of the room for a Cesarean Section, when a nurse came up beside me.
"Lakeshia, you have to calm down and save your baby. If you don't get him out, he may not make it, Push!"
When she said that my baby may not make it, the strength to save him came out of nowhere. Within a matter of minutes the baby was out but I didn't hear anything.
"What's wrong? Why isn't he crying? What's wrong with my baby?" I asked.
Tears began to pour from my eyes because I knew if he didn't make it, it was my fault.
"Rest yourself she'll be fine." The nurse said.
"She? It's a girl?" I asked. Before long, I heard the most beautiful sound in the world my baby crying and my tears of sorrow turned into ones of happiness.
"I told you she would be just fine. 5:07 p.m." They brought the others back in. Vin looked around and remarked.
"Who does this one belong to? We already have one!" He said jokingly.
He should have gone into comedy instead of acting. My eyes were getting heavy and my head was wavering. Before long I had fallen asleep.
When I woke up, I could hear Vin singing softly to whom I assumed were the babies. I rolled over and he began to walk over to me slowly a baby in each arm. Laying our baby boy in my arms, he kissed me gently on my forehead.
"They’re beautiful." I said softly.
"You did a great job. A great job." He said. The doctor came in a few minutes later to explain to us how this could have happened.
"Your baby boy, who is about two pounds bigger then the girl was blocking her during the ultrasound. The doctor who read the ultrasound reported things that occur when a woman is having twins but conclude that she only saw one baby. Assumed that maybe one twin absorbed the other or it aborted it self during your last menstrual cycle. As far as the heartbeats goes they had to have mistaken her heartbeat for yours wit with a heartbeat that slow, no way was your daughter supposed to live. Mr. Diesel you holding a miracle baby!" He smiles and exits the room.
