“You don’t want to know.”
“Yes I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Why? Are you afraid to tell me?”
“Nope.” Hayden swigged a mouthful of Guinness, swallowed it and smacked his lips in appreciation. “You don’t want to know because then you’ll have to confess about your first time. Uh, your mouth is hanging open again.”
Natalie snapped her mouth shut. Damn! She hadn’t thought about that. Her brow wrinkled at her mistake. This was detelytely her last mug of drink. She was not thinking clearly at all!
“Besides,” Hayden continued, “first times are about fumbling around and trying to figure out what to do and not to do, aren’t they? It was a sweet experience, but not one of my better days.” A sly smile crept across his mouth, the effect stealing Natalie’s breath. “I think instead of the first time, the next time should be the one that interests you.”
There was something foreboding in his tone. Blue eyes, normally friendly, gleamed under lowered lids, boring into hers with a message that prickled the hairs on the back of her neck. Nothing coherent formed in her brain, so she stared back with wide, startled eyes like those of a deer, nore wre whether to stay still or bolt for safety. Something puzzling was happening, but the Guinness-fuzzed brain refused to assimilate the significance of his words. Whatever its meaning, it sizzled tantalizingly just out of her reach, his eyes liquefying her insides, some of it draining towards a spot between her thighs.
“Hello!” A voice managed to yell above the noisy crowd.
Hayden and Natalie jumped at the ill-timed interruption. A held breath whooshed from Natalie as their eyes tracked the greeting. Pushing through the crowd towards them they caught sight of a large, burly man, grinning toothily at them. Hayden hailed him and waved him over. Behind the man, a shorter head bobbed, the person obviously being towed through the maze of bodies.
“Walt!” Hayden slid out of the booth, extending his hand in greeting.
Walt pumped Hayden’s hand then greeted Natalie with the same enthusiasm, stepping aside to uncover his partner.
“Hello, Trudy!” Hayden waved towards his vacated bench. “Join us, you two!”
The couple slid into the booth, the space rather cramped by Walt’s big frame, but they way they cozied up to one another left the other two in no doubt about their relationship. Hayden innocently slipped next to Natalie, the short bench forcing their bodies close together.
“How are you?” Natalie smiled at the couple, hoping her flipping insides at Hayden’s leg pressed against hers didn’t show. “I didn’t expect to see you two until Monday on the set!”
“It’s been ages!” Trudy exclaimed, beaming at her as Walt swigged a mouthful of ale. “Three years, I think. But, as always, George brings Star Wars back to its old home and we get to see everyone for the last time. Ah, so sad, isn’t it?st tst time. Hopefully, I won’t be running everywhere because George keeps changing the script on me.”
Walt chuckled and pinched her nose playfully. “You love it and you know it.” Hayden and Natalie exchanged amused looks. “Not a lot of set work, but me and the boys have it up and ready to go. Ran into Ewan and the Mrs. downtown last week. He’s lookin’ forward to it. Says ‘the duel’ will be awesome on the big screen.”
“I think it’s going to deliver big time,” Hayden answered, delight glowing from him. “It was amazing to do. Nick planned a dynamite battle between us. Too bad Ewan basically wins.” All of them laughed at that.
“When did you get in?” Trudy asked Natalie, happy to see her again.
“Today. Hayden and I ran into each other at check-in, so we came here to catch up with one another.” Natalie took in the adoring look Walt exchanged with Trudy. “Speaking of catching up…is there something we should know?”
Walt and Trudy laughed and Walt threw an arm around Trudy’s shoulders and squeezed her.
“You two were at each other’s throats last time we were here,” Hayden pointed out.
“Yeah, too right, mate,” Walt agreed with a laugh. “We got into a huge row just after pick ups wrapped and well, uh…” Walt coughed, the sight of him squirming awkwardly sending Natalie into peals of laughter.
“Oh, really, Walt!” Trudy rolled her eyes then looked at Natalie. “We ended up in your vacated dressing room!” Hayden and Natalie gaped at her.
“You two?” Hayden pointed a finger at them.
“Well, there IS a thin line between love and hate, Hayden,” Trudy sat up straight, tossing back her shining curtain of brown hair.
“What she’s trying to say is…we’re engaged,” Walt chuckled into his mug.
Hayden and Natalie happily congratulated the couple, still astonished at the sight of them together. Trudy extended her hand to show off her ring, which Natalie appropriately oohed and aahed over. Walt drank thirstily then banged his mug down and worked to hide his grin.
“She had to ask me to marry her,” He deadpanned. “After taking such scandalous advantage of me like that, me mum would’ve been after her with a shotgun if she didn’t make an honest man of me.”
“Wh…!” Trudy elbowed his belly, eyes blazing fire. “Oh! You are such a liar! Oh! He begged me two years ago to marry him I f I finally said yes a month later! Walt, you…you…”
Walt reared his head back and burst into loud guffaws as Trudy slapped his shoulder. When tears streamed down his cheeks he finally found his voice. “I’m sorry, sweetie, I couldn’t help it. She’s so easy to bait. We’re getting married next month.”
They all laughed heartily and dropped into easy conversation, diligently keeping any discussion of the movie to subjects allowed by George. No one from the cast or crew wanted any surprises to slip to the public. Finally, Hayden shook his head and fixed Walt with an incredulous eye.
“Natalie’s dressing room,” he repeated, draining his glass. “I can’t believe you took advantage of Trudy in Natalie’s dressing room.”
Walt shrugged. “It was quite a fight we got into and we tried to take it somewhere private before they called security on us. One thing led to another and…”
“Oh, but it’s all right,” Trudy hastened to assure Natalie. “We didn’t use the coucWe’rWe’re not that bad! It’s just that…well, sometimes things happen that you don’t expect, but when they do…KAPOW!”
The sentiment resonated with Natalie. The shock of Hayden’s hand rubbing over her knee stopped her heart.
“No harm done,” Hayden twinkled at Natalie. Just as quick as it had touched her, the hand returned to the table, but the imprint burned into her skin as if it still rested there.
“I don’t care,” Natalie returned, her smile plastered to her face while she attempted to restart her heart. “Um…just where did the ‘deed’ happen, if I may ask?”
“The middle of the floor,” Trudy giggled. A looksed sed between her and Walt, the secret of that day shared privately. Natalie felt a tug of jealousy at the obvious closeness.
“I’ll remember to give the hallowed spot a wide berth,” she joked with a dry tone.
Everyone laughed as she had intended and the conversation turned again to other things. Hayden was just glad he didn’t have to picture it anymore and let the pleasant effects of the Guinness flow through his body. Under the table his hands slipped to twiddle his thumbs. He felt Natalie tense beside him and smiled to himself. Unable to help it, he unclasped his hands and stroked a finger up her soft thigh to where her skirt ended and back down. Natalie choked on her drink, lifting her head, coughing, her eyes burning.
Dutifully, Hayden patted her back until the hacking subsided. “Are you all right?” He asked courteously, a picture of innocence.
Natalie caught the smile playing on his lips and caught the elusive shadow cross his face. Insides twisting and rolling, she nodded, and then pushed her mug away.
“That’s it,” she stated firmly. “No more for me. It’s to the loo and then back to the hotel.”
Hayden nodded in agreement. “Yeah, it’s getting so I can’t breathe in here. We should start back.”
Excited flutters erupted in Natalie’s stomac the the thought of walking in the dark with him. When their eyes met, she could only nod.
“Do you need a lift?” Walt asked.
“No, but thanks,” Hayden refused the offer. “The hotel’s not far and fresh air is what I need.”
After saying their goodbyes, they began their long wade through the crowd. “It will take forever to get a turn at the bathroom,” Natalie complained to him. “But, if I don’t, I’ll never make it back.”
Hayden agreed and suggested, “I’ll meet you by the door then, so we don’t lose one another.”
Natalie was right. It took a long time to get to use the bathroom. By the time she got her turn, she thought her bladder would burst. Hayden had drunk one more than she and she could only imagine the pain he had to go through while waiting. When she shoved her way back into the crowd she weaved her way to the door and found Hayden waiting for her, that look flitting across his face again. His eyes couldn’t seem to help rng ong over her legs and up her body. Wherever they touched, heat penetrated her until the only escape was out the door into the cooler, fresher air.
Hayden found himself studying the back of Natalie’s body as she stepped ahead of him, the skirt flouncing back and forth from her stride. It seemed to flirt with him, grabbing his eyes to the dtabltable sway of her backside. Never had a girl entranced him so much as Natalie did. It made no sense, but when did affairs of the heart, or body, make sense? Hayden’s shoulders lifted in a shrug. An insidious thought wound through his mind of that day in the woods years ago. Crystal clear he could see the new leaves on the tree, the way he had backed her up against the rough bark of the trunk. The kiss had gone on and on and almost blown the top of his head off…only…his brow wrinkled…it was Natalie opening her mouth for him, winding her arms around his neck, pushing her body against his to seek the luscious friction. Friction? There had been no friction that day. Not like what supplanted it in his mind. The thought of the writhing pressure or her hips sliding against his hardened him so fast he grimaced in discomfort.
His eyes focused on her rear again. If it had been her on that day, he allowed the truth free, the last thing he would haone one was stop at a kiss. Especially, if she had spent time wanting to know about his first kiss and sexual experience! Right now all he could think about was plundering her mouth, and anything else needed to assuage this damn ache! A deep breath expanded his chest, the need to possess rearing its head for the first time in his life. Dark and strong it demanded he satisfy the urge to have the one thing he supposedly should never want. Natalie.
No relationships with ars, ars, he reminded himself. But the movie's all but wrapped, whispered an enticing voice in his head, she's not really a co-worker anymore. His eyes took in her form again, a speculative gleam burning in their depths. A kiss. Just to see if she responds, he reasoned with him, kn, knowing full well from the tightness against his jeans that he wanted more of her…much more.
Maybe this will clear my head, Natalie told herself as the welcomed air brushed over her in cooling drafts. He couldn’t really be looking at me like that. This is Hayden. Nice, safe, predictable Hayden.
The palm on the small of her back snagged her breath from her. It guided her through another crowd of people sitting and standing outside where the river wound its way sluggishly by. No one paid them any attention and soon Hayden skirted them away, where they could stand in the shadows and watch the meandering river beyond the reveling mob.
“This feels so much better,” Natalie sighed, tilting her face to the faint breeze wafting over her. “I can breathe again.”
“Can you?” The enigmatic words murmured from Hayden, drawing her eyes to his.
The shadow played over his face again as one hand snaked around her waist, edging her closer to him. A shiver ran noticeable through her body, coaxing a half smile from Hayden.
“Are you cold?” he asked, his voice low.
“N...no,” she answered, the words barely audible. His face lowered.
“Then why are you trembling?” A brow lifted.
“I’m not trembling,” she denied, one hand pressing against his chest with only a little force.
He snorted at her denial, his face looming closer, her eyes locked on the fullness of his lower lip, warning sirens screaming in her brain to take evasive action. Every muscle in her tensed as her limbs weakened. If she moved she was sure her legs would fold under her.
“Are you afraid I’m going to kiss you,” he mumbled, forcing her eyes back to his, “or that I’m not going to kiss?”
?”
Whatever he was going to say, that wasn’t what she expected. A roaring burst in her ears, drowning out the noises beyond the shadows. All that existed was the intent in his blue eyes daring her into thoughts that streaked through her mind, sinful, lustful thoughts violating her safe, pristine universe. A spiral of excitement shot straight through Nat, ch, chased immediately by a shaky moan rattling past her lips.
“Hayden…no…”
The soft capture of her lower lip took her by surprise. Expecting a hard, grabbing onslaught, Natalie thought she was prepared. But the lush caress on her lip tipped her over the edge and she responded to its lure, closing her eyes to savor the biting electricity zipping through her. Hayden nuzzled her mouth, caressing it slowly, with an expertise she would never have credited to him. Pulling back a little he murmured something then dove back in, plundering her mouth wide open to take her tongue hostage with his.
Arms reached for him, winding around his neck. Purely on instinct Natalie submitted, feeding his appetite with her stirring response. Lust surged through Hayden, grounding his mouth over hers, his hands sliding down her ribcage and around her hips. Blindly, he followed his need, his hands finding the hem of her short skirt. They moved under it, riding up the silken skin of her thighs to grasp bare skin. Fingers explored, finding where the fabric of her thong dipped into the enticing cleft of her rear. A fresh burst of carnal need consumed him. Cupping the firm yet soft globes of flesh, he massaged them, her groan meeting his as their tongues entangled. Squeezing them, he lifted her until she slid against his aching hardness. Hoping it would take the edge off the pain, it only added to the raging drive to take more of her.
The hard length of him pressed along the tender, demanding nerves that screamed for more. Natalie shook, her hips bucking against him. A rumble of hunger raced up his throat and he yanked her against him. The siren wailed again, warning her of imminent disaster. The unmistakable fire licked along her veins, shooting her towards orgasm, her insides tightening in promise.
About to burst into flames, a tiny, reality check slipped into her mind, showing her the picture of them, where anyone peering into the darkness would see them straining together like rutting animals. Everything within her cowered and screeched to a sickening halt. Struggling against him, she pushed with all her might, png tng them apart.
“No!” She gasped, eyes wide with shame and fright at the protesting need between her legs. “Stop it!”
