"Quite a party tonight, huh?" Nikki asked over her shoulder, lounging back in her chair with her feet up on the chair next to her. She playfully spun the bottom of her bottle of Mike's Hard Lemonade on the table.
"Yeah, I think we had a bigger crowd than last year," I replied leaning over a table, cleaning it with a towel. I stood up straight and began placing empty glasses and bottles on a serving tray.
"Hey," Nikki began, lowering her feet to the floor and turning toward the table to face my direction. "Did you see that guy in the Zorro costume?" she asked, folding her arms on the table. My sister's voice held that same playful tone that I've known all my life.
I walked behind the bar and rested the full tray on the bar. "Oh, you mean the guy in all black with the leather mask?" I replied, pointing to my face, holding an empty beer bottle. After a quick nod of her head as she took a drink I continued. "Yeah, I saw him … but I don't think it was a Zorro costume. It looked more like `The Man In Black' from `The Princess Bride.'"
Nikki snapped her fingers and pointed while swallowing a mouthful of her drink. "That's it! I knew I saw that costume somewhere before!" she finally said, pointing at me. After a short pause to put her feet back up on the chair next to her she continued. "Do you have any idea who he is?" she asked, over her shoulder.
I could tell that she was very curious about this `mystery man'. I shook my head, with a quick, "No," in reply as I continued to place glasses in the sink and empty bottles in the recycle can. "I asked Danny if he recognized him but he said he'd never seen him in here before."
Nikki just nodded in acceptance. "Boy," she began with a little laugh, playing with her bottle again, "he sure had his eyes all over you tonight."
I rolled my eyes at her comment. "Oh … he did not," I said, walking back out into the bar to continue my cleaning.
"He did too!" Nikki replied, slapping her hand on the table. "Every time Danny would let you stop waiting tables so you could dance to a couple songs he was watching you."
Sensing that this was just another one of Nikki's `let's tease the gullible little sister' tricks, I balled up my towel and threw it at her saying, "He was not! Stop it!"
She squealed and laughed as she caught the towel before it hit her face. "He was too! Oh … come on, TJ. You don't think ANY guy was checking you out tonight?"
I shook my head not looking up as I walked around the corner of one of the four pool tables gathering more bottles.
"You know … you're not geeky little kid with glasses any more," she added. "I mean … you're dating a professional football player, for crying out loud!"
"Yeah," I began with a snort," and the only reason that happened was because Hines dared him to!" I carefully placed all the bottles I had collected on the tray on a table near Nikki.
Nikki let out a frustrated growl and threw the towel back at me. I caught the towel and began wiping off the table. I slowed the speed of my cleaning to think about what she said. She was right about me not being that geeky little kid anymore. I just r cor considered myself the kind of girl that could turn heads. Hearing her voice again brought me out of my thoughts.
"So, where is that hunky stud of a boyfriend of yours anyway?" Nikki asked, standing up and walking toward the bar.
I laughed at her description. "In Boston. He left this afternoon. They're playing the Patriots on Halloween."
"Oh, that's right! We're hosting the party on Sunday, huh?" she asked placing her empty bottle in the recycle can.
"Yep," I replied with a nod, finishing wiping down the table. I lifted the full tray to my shoulder as my thoughts went back to earlier that day. I walked behind the bar and lowered the tray onto the bar. I stood still, staring at the tray of bottles and twisting the towel in my hands. After a moment of silence I turned toward Nikki and asked, "Can I tell you something?"
"Of course," Nikki replied, reaching over to help me separate the bottles and glasses on the tray.
I stepped back and looked down at the towel in my hands. "I think Jimmy has a girlfriend in Boston," I said quickly.
Nikki stopped removing items from the tray and looked at me. "Wha … what makes you think that?" she asked with wide eyes.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "He was acting kinda funny before he left this afternoon. I was over his place when he was packing. I think I saw the corner of a box of rubbers sticking out from under his shirts." My voice started to crack as a sob formed in my throat. Nikki dropped her eyes and continued to unload the tray. Her silence told me that she didn't know what to say. "This is the first away game that he didn't ask me to go with him." I blinked my tear filled eyes and tried to busy myself by unloading the tray. I suddenly felt like I should never have brought it up.
Nikki brought her eyes back up and looked at me. "Well," she began, trying to find a reason for Jimmy's actions, "maybe he didn't ask … because he knew that you wanted to work at the party tonight. He knows how much you love Halloween." By the tone of her voice she’d thought she’d found a solution.
"Yeah … maybe," I replied, staring at a random empty bottle on the tray. "He's just been so … distant lately."
"How so?" Nikki asked softly.
I swallowed hard and quickly wiped at a tear falling down my cheek. "I don't know," I stammered, turning away in frustration. "I know he has a busy schedule and all ... and I'm probably totally blowing this out of proportion but …" I crossed my arms tightly around my chest and leaned back against the bar. "I feel like … he doesn't want me anymore." I closed my eyes and dropped my chin to my chest. A few tears streamed down my cheeks. "I guess that's why it's so hard for me to believe that some guy was watching me tonight. How could HE want me … when my own boyfriend doesn't even want me?" I covered my face with my hands as tears fell uncontrollably down my cheeks.
Nikki stepped forward anlledlled me into her arms. She held me, stroking my back while I cried into her chest. “Have you told him how you feel?” she asked softly.
"No," I said through my hands, shaking my head.
Nikki stepped back and grabbed a napkin on the bar. She handed it to me and I dabbed my eyes as I said, "He's never home long enough. He's either at practice or the gym or watching game films ..." I stopped to blow my nose and catch my breath. I rested my hand on my chest and took a couple deep breaths trying to calm my sobs.
“I think you should talk to him … when he comes home,” Nikki said softly.
With a couple sniffles I nodded in agreement. I continued to wipe the tears from my cheeks as I turned back to the still full serving tray. Nikki helped me clear the tray in silence.
I glanced around the empty bar and smiled when I saw all clean tables. "Well … I'm about done here so you can take off if you want," I said.
"Are you sure?" Nikki asked with concern.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine," I reassured her. "I'm just gonna finish up in the back and lock up. I'm kinda beat actually." I yawned and stretched my arms behind my back.
“Okay,” she replied and walked toward the end of the bar to gather her purse and coat.
I followed as she walked toward the front door pulling on her coat. “Is Mason staying at mom’s tonight?” I asked.
“Yeah,” Nikki replied, pulling her hair out of the collar of her coat. “She took him to Trax Farm to pick out a pumpkin to carve for Sunday. I’ll be picking him up tomorrow afternoon.”
I smiled at the thought of my three-year-old nephew and my mom carving a pumpkin for Halloween!
When we reached the door Nikki turned back and said, “I’ll see ya at home, then?”
I nodded and stepped forward giving her a big hug. “Thanks,” I said softly rubbing her back.
“No problem,” she replied. We exchanged ‘goodbye’s and ‘see ya later’s and I pulled the door shut behind her.
I exhaled loudly and walked to the bathroom at the side of the bar. After blowing my nose again with some toilet paper and splashing some cold water on my red, puffy eyes, I washed up and dried my face and hands with a paper towel. I retreated into the back room untying my apron. I opened my locker and threw my apron inside. As I slammed the locker door shut I thought I heard a beep from the security system as if someone came in the front door of the bar. Maybe Nikki forgot something I thought to myself. I walked back out into the bar saying, "Did you forget your...”
