Chapter Two
When noon came and went he didn’t worry. At one, a dull pain began to pound behind his eyes. It was now a little past two and a blinding headache threatened to split his head clean down the middle. Never in his entire life had Hayden been this angry. The rage throbbed in his temples and clenched his jaw as he tried to chase it away. Nothing helped. It thrived, gathering strength with every empty, passing minute, feeding off the silence that shouted through the apartment. Fingers pushed into his temples rubbing the skin in hard circles. The veins pulsed in time with his accelerating heartbeats. Even-tempered no longer described his character. He was absolutely, positively, unequivocally furious!
Hayden grabbed a pillow off the couch and flung it at the front door. Instead of evaporating, the tension heightened, twisting the pain to a new degree of agony. If he didn’t find some relief soon he was going to blow his top like a volcano and destroy anyone in his path. Not that there was anyone there to feel his wrath, he seethed to himself.
Growling, he stormed into the bathroom and wrenched the medicine cabinet open. The over-the-counter pain reliever probably would not help, but it was the only option he had…that and strangling his fingers around a certain young woman’s graceful neck. She knew she was to be here at noon. She knew she needed his help. She knew she had to nail this scene on Monday or lose the role. She knew! Yet, here he was, script open, ready to go, and no Natalie. Slipping two tablets into his mouth, he lifted the Dixie cup of water and tossed his head back to swallow them. The gulp of them flowing down his throat echoed in the silence. He crushed the cup and slammed it into the wastebasket. Gripping the edge of the sink he leaned forward, squeezing his eyes shut and clamping his lips together. Lightheaded, he inhaled a few deep breaths in hopes of restoring calm. His blood pressure dipped a little. Then the doorbell rang.
Hayden’s eyes opened, focusing on his reflection in the bathroom mirror. A stranger glared back at him, a ferocious beast wanting nothing more than to kill the prey now only a few unsuspecting feet away. He pushed himself away from the sink and stalked to the door.
Before he opened it, he peered through the peephole to study his victim. Yep, just as he thought. Natalie stood there, a happy smile playing about her lips, blissfully unaware…or uncaring, he added…of her fate. Pretty in a baby blue sundress, she tossed her brown hair and waited for him to open the door.
The door opened, all right. It almost flew off its hinges as he wrenched it open. Natalie jumped back a half step, startled. Her eyes flew to Hayden’s and her smile died in the blast of anger flaring from him. Stony blue eyes narrowed on her, generous lips thinned in barely concealed fury. Confused, Natalie glanced at her watch to check how late she was, her mind shrugging at the lateness of the hour. Ok, so she was late. Ok, so she was really late! Oops.
“Hi,” she pinned the smile back to her mouth. When all she got was brooding silence she tried again. “Sorry I’m a little late. Gosh, I didn’t realize the time! We were checking out antique stores for some lamps I want and were having so much fun I just lost track.”
Hayden stepped back to let her walk in and averted his heated eyes from hers as he struggled to maintain composure. Natalie frowned at the rebuff and walked in, mentally preparing for his censure. The door closed behind her with an ominous, quiet click and she held her breath marshalling her poise before turning to face his still form.
The blue eyes dipped to take in her unassuming beauty. The baby blue sundress bared sun kissed shoulders, swishing with a flirty bounce an inch above her knee. Flat, open heeled tan sandals gave her no advantage in height, but still managed to draw attention to her slender, but shapely calves. Her legs reminded him of a dancer’s, lithe and strong and graceful. Slowly, his eyes traveled up, barely touching on her small breasts, which rounded against the lightweight material. Finally, his eyes glanced at her generous mouth and stopped at eyes that always managed to bewitch him with their creamy golden brown gaze. But, not today.
“Where’s your script?” Hayden clipped, gesturing to her empty hands.
“Oh, I didn’t bring it. I didn’t want to traipse through the shops worrying about it, so I left it behind,” Natalie explained, tossing her tiny shoulder purse on the table as she waltzed into his living room. “I know it, so it didn’t seem necessary.”
Grinding his teeth together in frustration, Hayden mentally counted to ten. “Fine. Whatever,” he shrugged and marched past her, gesturing with his hand. “Follow me.”
Brows veeing in concern at her stiff reception, Natalie followed him. “Look. I’m sorry I’m late,” she ventured again, not liking his rebuffing. “I just lost track of time, that’s all.”
Hayden stopped and turned, forcing Natalie to stop or walk into him. A finger jabbed at her. “It’s YOUR job on the line, not mine. I am merely trying to help you keep it. Excuse me for being a little pissed off that I seem to have more concern for your job than you do.” With that, he pivoted on his heel and continued through his apartment.
Natalie watched the tense set of his shoulders, her own anger piqued. “I said I was sorry,” she fumed, her feet shuffling quickly to catch up to him. “And I am NOT taking this lightly!” She heard him snort in disbelief. “Just because I am confident we can do this and not take all day to work it out is no reason for you to act like a jackass, Hayden. You have no right…”
The words fizzled out. Eyes large and startled, she looked around her. Not paying attention, so caught up in telling him off she had blindly followed him and now stood in his large bedroom. The familiar wariness that crept up on her every time they tried to do the bedroom scene curled in the lower pit of her belly.
Frozen in place, she watched him drop his script on the bed and lift his arms. His long fingers grabbed the back of his tee shirt and began hauling the material over his head. The line of his broad shoulders tapered to a lean waist, muscles accustomed to exercise flexing under the taut skin. Warning bells clanged in her head and she tensed at the lurch of fear in her stomach. Carelessly he threw the shirt across the room and turned to her unaware he looked like he had just crawled out of bed.
“Time is running, Nat, let’s go,” he motioned to the bed. “We can pick up right at where he climbs into her bed. Oh…wait.”
Bending over, he grabbed his bedcovers and yanked them down, rustling the sheets. He cocked his head and studied the effect. “There. That looks right. Ok, we’ll pick it up from the line ‘what if I say I don’t want you to go.’”
Silence greeted him and puzzled he looked at Natalie with impatience. “What’s the matter?”
Natalie stared at the bed. “Do we have to do it in here?”
“Doesn’t that make sense to you? It’s a bedroom scene,” he frowned at her reluctance.
“Did you have to take your shirt off?” She flashed him an accusing look.
“What is wrong with you?” He asked. “It’s better than being naked, isn’t it? I mean, hey, that may be how you want it, but I’d prefer to keep at least some clothes on, thank you very much.”
It was meant to be a joke. Natalie’s head snapped back as if he’d slapped her. “I don’t even want your shirt off!” She denied hotly, marching over to the discarded shirt and holding it out as if it would bite her. “Here. Put this back on!”
Hayden shook his head. “No. It doesn’t fit the scene.”
“Put it on!”
“Don’t be such a baby, Natalie. Just crawl onto the bed…oh, take your shoes off first. I just changed these sheets.”
About to decline with more force, Natalie clamped her mouth shut and ran the picture through her mind. An inward groan of embarrassment ricocheted through her head. She must look like a total idiot! It was Hayden, for crying out loud! There was no reason for her to act like this. He’s professional, she told herself. He’s trying to help you. Just shut up and do it. The sooner you get through this, the sooner you can get the hell out of here and not see him again until Monday on the set! The thought that she felt desperate to get away from him baffled her. It was something she had been turning over in her mind for two weeks and still had no answer.
With as casual a shrug as she could muster, she dropped the shirt and perched herself on the end of the bed to slip off her sandals. She tried to maneuver into the middle of the bed without looking as tense as she felt. There was something about lying in his bed, in sheets where he slept that unnerved her. Stomach churning in frantic waves she fisted her hands and watched him move to a point on the other side of the room. Eyes half-closed to shield the uncertainty in them, Natalie attempted to get into character.
When she nodded her readiness, Hayden paced over and bent to scoop up his shirt, his movements agitated and angry. Natalie’s tongue felt swollen and numb and tripped over the words.
“What if I say I don’t want you to go?” She managed to get out, but the words wobbled in spite of her control.
Hayden seemed not to notice the unsteadiness in her voice and lifted his head slowly, eyes turning on hers with hungry disbelief.
“What did you say?” His voice husked in the still air.
Natalie gulped air for her next line. “Don’t go.”
Nerveless fingers dropped the shirt and Hayden slowly made his way to the foot of the bed, pinning her with his fierce blue gaze as if she were his sole reason for being alive. Climbing onto the foot of the bed, it didn’t take him long to reach her and prop himself on his elbows so that his face stopped a few inches above hers. Eyes searched hers for reassurance.
“Say it,” he whispered, his voice pitched low, scraping across the nerves along her spine.
Natalie’s lips parted as she fought for air. His face so close to hers she felt the swirling vortex fighting to enclose her as it always did when they tried to do this scene. The dizziness pulled at her and a darkness threatened to black her out. Hysteria covered her face in a fine sheen of sweat as she struggled for her line while he waited patiently for the delivery.
“Don’t…go,” the words strangled from her throat.
Hayden heard the agitated catch of her breath and broke character. Hard eyes studied her flushed face, registering some form of fear in the tense set of her features. Lifting his head farther away, he watched her take an easier breath.
“Natalie, I don’t understand how my closeness is freaking you out,” Hayden pushed away and sat up looping his arms around his knees. “We have kissed tons of times before. You have done love scenes before. What is the problem?”
“Just do it, Hayden,” Natalie’s eyes flashed up at him. “I know it’s stupid and I don’t know why I’m doing it, so just do it! We get through this once and I’ll be fine, so just do it. Even if I struggle, get us through this scene.”
You’re nuts, he thought, but kept his opinion to himself. “Ok,” he rolled back over into position. “Say it again.”
“No.”
“Nat.”
“No.” Natalie glared up at him. “Do it and get it over with.”
The order hit a nerve to his ego and fanned the ember of his anger, but he closed the distance between them and gently put his lips to hers. There was no response. Carefully, he kissed her again. Nothing. A tiny flame sprouted from the ember. Over and over he played with her lips, coaxing, but always gentle, grasping and nuzzling. If she continued to lie under him like a corpse much longer he was going to self-combust in fury and take her with him.
Then, she moved. A tiny pursing of her lips, but at least it was something. Encouraged, Hayden continued to coax her with soft kisses. So busy trying to get her relaxed in the scene he didn’t think about what exactly he was doing. As far as he could tell, he was doing his job and she was finally beginning to take ownership of her character.
It was impossible. Natalie tried to respond, but at the first touch of his lips, every joint in her body locked in violent reaction. She squeezed her eyes shut and prayed she could endure the violent whirling that always descended. I’ve got to get through this, she chanted to herself. Hayden tilted his head a different way and brushed his lips along hers. Natalie held her breath. Then he tugged softly on them in encouragement. Nothing. The darkness welling up in her threatened to force her out of his arms again. Heart pounding hard against her ribs she fought for control.
Hayden tilted his head the other way and brushed along her mouth. A tiny bit of her focus on the dark pit jerked in her belly. His lips kissed the line of her tight mouth and tugged her focus again with a sharp jolt. Each time his mouth lifted from hers and returned the jolt increased in electric intensity. The soft, gentle grasping of her mouth lured her from the dark pit and when her mouth softened under his Natalie forgot to think. Instead, she reacted.
Lips moved under his, reaching for his kiss, moving in partnership. Free to loosen his focus a bit he split his concentration between the next move and the sensation of her relaxing under him. Electricity stung along his nerves, searing the wires to his brain. The pleasure of her response threatened to steal him from his character. The last thing he wanted was to lose himself in Natalie’s kiss! But, then her hands stole to the bare skin of his shoulders and slowly moved to tangle into his hair. A jagged desire cut into him and arrowed blood towards his groin. Somewhere outside his body, he watched and screamed for him to retreat, as the kisses grew harder and more heated.
“Ouch!” Hayden reared back, grabbing his mouth. He stumbled off the bed and glared down at a shaken Natalie. Touching his finger to his bottom lip he held it in front of him and stared at the beaded drop of blood. “Damn it, Natalie! You BIT me!!”
Natalie jackknifed off the other side of the bed, her chest heaving. “You keep your tongue in your own mouth!”
“That wasn’t my tongue!” He yelled back, wiping his lip with the back of his hand. “It was my lip!”
“It was your tongue!”
“It was my lip!”
“Your tongue!”
“You’re paranoid!”
They squared off across the bed from one another glaring daggers. The anger in Hayden fountained up his body in a firestorm and scorched his soul.
“I have had it with you!” He threw his arms up in the air. “Fine! You don’t want to do this with me. You have made it perfectly clear! My ego doesn’t have to take another slap from you! I have gone out of my way to help you. I took my weekend and threw it away so you wouldn’t lose this role. Then, you don’t even have the courtesy to show up on time! And, no, you weren’t just a little late! You’re so far passed late that I should have just said ‘to hell with it’ and gone to the beach to surf with my brother! Then, maybe you could have gone back to your place and fucked your boyfriend all afternoon! It might have worn you out enough that you could’ve done this without the hysterics.”
Natalie froze at his crude remark, gathering her own fury and whipping it into a maelstrom. “How dare you!” She screamed back at him. “Don’t you dare talk to me like that!” Somewhere deep inside she knew he was right. She should have shown up on time, she should have let him know he unnerved her, then he might have been more understanding. But, the crude crack about the boyfriend threw her off balance. “I cannot believe you said that to me! Who do you think you are?”
“I’m an actor trying to not be in a movie that you screwed up because you can’t stand to be within touching distance of me!” Hayden threw back at her, his face darkening.
“That’s not the problem,” Natalie muttered at him, stomping around the bed. Planting herself in front of him, she jammed her fists on her hips and glared up at him. “You apologize for that remark.”
“No. As a matter of fact,” he huffed, his eyes drawing dangerously narrow, “I think I will prefer your replacement to you. At least she’ll do the scene so the audience believes it. Hell, even with all her subtle groping I’ll enjoy it more than performing with a wooden bitch like you!”
Natalie’s head almost exploded. Her fist punched out at him, nailing him in the stomach. He bent over a bit in reaction as the air rushed out of him and she caught him in the ear. A yowl of pain blasted out of him and he backpedaled, one hand clutching his stomach the other his ear.
Hayden was beyond disbelief. “Do that again and I’ll hit you back,” he promised, his blood boiling in the flames, a little more of his character disintegrating. “I’ve never hit a woman before, but you are aching for it.”
Fury shook Natalie’s slender frame. “And I’ll hit you back. You know,” she flashed him a saccharine smile, “maybe you’re right. Maybe I need to go back to my place and find Michael and spend the day in bed.”
A red haze of rage tainted Hayden’s vision at her taunt. “Shut up,” he warned, his fingers clenching at the haughty toss of her head.
“Yes, that will do me good, since I’ve had to put up with your clumsy fumbling today,” Natalie goaded, her eyes lighting with the fire of battle. A voice in her, tinny and far away, yelled at her to stop the nonsense, but she was giddy with the drunken fog of the fight. Emotions long suppressed and buried heaved against their prison the doors inching open with each heady insult.
“Shut up,” he warned again through lips that barely parted.
“I’ll spend the rest of the day screwing…oh wait, that wasn’t quite what you said, now, was it?” She tilted her chin, surveying his reddening face with glittering eyes. “Oh, yes. I’ll spend the rest of the day fucking him!”
“SHUT UP!” Hayden roared at her, stalking over and grabbing her shoulders with crushing hands.
Natalie yelped under the bruising grip, but cried out in distress when she felt herself fly into the air. The bounce of the mattress under her knocked the wind from her lungs and while she gasped to breathe he pounced on her, his eyes wild with a feral promise of retribution. Lips hard and demanding smothered hers, his tongue stabbing deep into the dark cavern of her mouth. She pummeled his shoulders with ineffective fists to free herself to suck in needed air. Hayden’s mouth ground painfully down on hers, a thick black cloud snatching her sight, toddling her on the brink of unconsciousness. A thick, gurgle of distress bubbled in her throat and he lifted his mouth a fraction off hers.
Air rushed into her grateful lungs and the blackness dissipated, but the anger did not. Natalie lashed out at him with clawed fingers, but Hayden easily pinioned them above her head while she spit and hissed at him like a mad cat. A nasty smile curled over his lips, baring white teeth as he transferred one wrist into the other hand freeing a hand to slide along her bare leg.
Too worked up to freeze in dismay, Natalie growled at him and thrashed about to free herself. “I’ll bite you, you son of a bitch!” She snarled up at him, her heart accelerating in the heat of battle.
“You do and you’ll be sorry,” he muttered, the last word muffled as his mouth crashed back onto hers.
Again, the tongue stabbed into her mouth, but this time she was ready to fight back. Meeting it halfway, she dueled with him, kissing him back with as much angry force as she could muster. She would show him! Since her hands were useless, she used her own mouth to bruise and punish. At the right moment, her tongue snaked over his lips into his mouth, pushing its way into the moist interior. Teeth clamped down on it, but didn’t bite hard. Natalie wiggled in frustration, rucking her sundress up higher on her thighs, but she didn’t care. He had thwarted her move and she had to retreat. A taunting laugh of triumph burst from his mouth into hers along with his tongue and she agreed to fight him on her side of the fence.
Slipping below her defenses, the hand that rested on her thigh slid higher with a tantalizing slow glide, the pads of his fingers reveling in the silky skin underneath them. Unfazed, she continued to fiercely kiss him, beginning to nip at his bottom lip with sharp teeth that stopped just below full-blown pain. In retaliation, his hand crept over her inner thigh easing her legs apart, one finger lightly brushing over her panties. They were damp.
Natalie loosed a sharp gasp, her body bucking in awareness of the sensitized shock. The finger rubbed a little harder on the fabric, testing the level of dampness. She groaned against his mouth, biting the sound off with a muffled noise of anger.
The blood of rage pounding Hayden’s temples surged downward pooling in his groin at the knowledge he had aroused her body. In answer, his shaft grew and hardened, begging him to change tactics and advance. The hand moved stealthily up her belly then back down, snagging under the line of her panties, cupping her mound. A finger slid over the slick, wet button and Natalie’s body bucked in his hand. It caressed again and she tried to push her hips away. It followed and touched her again.
Hayden broke off the kiss with a healthy pop and looked into dazed eyes. Again, he touched her, but watched her reaction. Natalie stared up at him, her eyes closing at the sensation, her hips lifting a fraction towards the touch. Agitated and gasping for air, she opened fiery eyes.
“Bastard,” she hissed at him, even as her hips reacted again to his touch. The offending digit slid low and entered then retreated over the hardened nub. “Go to Hell.”
The finger withdrew and Hayden brought it up to show her how wet it was with her juices. “Surrender, Natalie, and I’ll let you keep your pride.”
In answer, she lifted her head and sunk her teeth into the crook of his neck. The action stretched his neck as the nerves there tingled into life. Natalie dropped her head back onto the pillow and challenged him with her stare. One knee moved slightly and came into contact with the hard bulge under his fly. Hayden gritted his teeth and Natalie caught the muscle clenching in his jaw.
“You surrender,” she challenged up at him. “Your as hard as a rock.”
Swift movement freed her wrists but Hayden pulled her upright, yanking her sundress over her head. Natalie cried out in shock, but he pushed her back down and grabbed her panties in both hands and raked them down her legs. Anticipating the movement of his head, she wrapped her fingers around strands of his hair and tugged hard. He grunted but fought her and moved against the force.
When his lips opened over the turgid tip of her breast, Natalie’s hands clenched in his hair, her back arching at the velvety rasp of his tongue. Instead of tearing fists of hair from his head, the fingers molded to his scalp and held him there as he flicked his tongue rapidly over the straining nub. A coil of excitement tightened from her breast to the apex of her thighs and a shaky moan filled the air in response.
The sounds breaking from her urged Hayden on and he suckled harder, until her body danced with a continuous roll of her hips. Alternating between both breasts, he played her, the music of her moans enslaving him in spite of his efforts.
Long minutes drifted by, the sun’s rays slanting their angle in the waning afternoon. Hayden left her now tender breasts and hoisted himself higher to suck on the smooth skin of her neck on his way back to a mouth now rapacious with need. As their tongues entangled, he felt her hands at his waistband fighting to free the button, then open the zipper. At the first caress of her hand around his cock, he pushed against her, a groan of agony tinged with ecstasy rumbling in his chest.
He was hot and hard in her hand, the skin satiny smooth to the touch. With a slow, tempting rhythm she moved from the base of his shaft to the tip where her thumb spread a telltale drop of his own desire over the crown. His growl for more curled a sly smile of power over her lips as her tongue darted out to lick the swollen sensitive curve of his mouth. The lean, rangy body shuddered violently and the marauding finger returned between her legs to rub in tandem with her accelerating strokes.
The move thwarted her plans and her mind shut down for good. Hayden’s body lifted over her, forcing both to halt their attacks. Before he could settle over her, Natalie’s hands fluttered to the waistband of his pants and pushed them down along with his boxers. They struggled to unclothe him without breaking their kiss. Natalie lifted her legs and pushed them the rest of the way down with her feet. With a kick of his legs, he managed to fling them off and settle into the welcoming cradle of her hips.
The urgent call to engage the enemy flared, but who had the upper hand faded in the frantic clamor to mate. A fine sheen of perspiration aided the sliding of skin against skin. Lower bodies shifted and positioned. Whimpering incoherently, Natalie twisted against his body as he plundered her mouth and thrust his hardness passed the gates and into the tight, heated heart of her.
Logic scattered to the four corners of the earth and Hayden slid out and back in slowly, testing how they fit together. Natalie’s body tightened around him. Neither knew who groaned their surrender first for the driving of their bodies snatched the battle away from them. As if they’d done this forever, their bodies moved in tandem, seeking the most from one another that they could steal. Slim hips undulated under Hayden gyrating with a firm purpose. There was no time for lazy play, there was only time to rush to the pinnacle and plummet off. Frenzied moans slipped back and forth in their locked, dueling mouths, each advance and retreat, every push and pull generating gathering clouds of thunder and lightning. It was like climbing up a slippery slope. For every advance he made on her, he fell a step back in the ensuing grip of her inner walls. There was no way to be the clear winner in this fight.
Hayden’s mouth lifted from hers, his breaths coming in hard, painful gasps. Natalie opened wild eyes onto blue orbs that reached straight into her soul and ripped it from its moorings as his hips surged harder and faster against her. The insistent buzz between her legs grew and she matched his tempo, panting in her attempt to reach what she intuitively knew he could give her. Fingers dug into his upper arms as she hitched her legs higher drawing him in deeper, her walls beginning to shake under his relentless onslaught.
“Oh my…oh…ungh…ahh…” Natalie’s voice rose in pitch as she felt the rush of her body reaching for something she was certain had to be unattainable.
The sweet sounds of her inevitable climax spurred him on, punishing her with his driving rhythm. Before she could get his name completely passed her lips, she convulsed in a myriad of bright colors, her muscles clenching in ecstatic release of the tension and energy that had imprisoned her body. Waves of heat and chills swamped her and she cried out, clinging to Hayden for safety, her hips working faster against his, her walls kneading his shaft towards an explosion of its own. She arched, her body awash with the most intense contractions it had ever known. Then, she heard and felt his own surrender to the storming assault.
Hayden groaned, his breath jerking with the oncoming rush of pleasure her body demanded from him. Eyes squeezed shut, his senses focused only on the grip and release of her splendid body as it hurtled him into space. Body locking, his seed roared out of him in great, hot jets of release, the muscles in his neck cording in reaction to the tightening of his muscles. A sound of relief filled the room. He felt her legs tighten around him as he hovered a moment in space then drifted back to the earth where his heart raced and his body shook on supporting elbows.
Natalie watched what she did to him, a hand reaching up to smooth over the straining muscles in his throat in fascination, her mind and body dazed in the aftermath. A fierce, prideful joy gathered in a sunburst and exploded around the area of her heart. Blue eyes opened onto hers briefly, their eyes clashing a moment, reaching deep into exposed territory, before his body slumped and he collapsed onto her, his face burrowing into the space between the pillow and her neck, all his strength spent in her sated body.
