Day 01
Cone and Paige had been married for about five years now. They had decided early on that they both wanted children and after their honeymoon in Hawaii, Paige found out that she was pregnant. It was a long nine months followed by ten long hours but on April the fourth, their son, Raiden Jacob McCaslin was born. Raiden was now four years old and a handful to take care of. He had a tendency to run off and get lost, which scared the hell out of his parents who almost always had to run after him. Paige had learned to look at the bright part of this fact, her and Cone didn’t have to ever go to the gym that just chased Raiden about. Cone and the rest of Sum 41 had decided to go on another tour now that Raiden was older and Paige decided she’d do a tour with them since she had just released her first album in several years. So, they decided on a double tour that would start soon. Paige and Cone were now at the mall picking up a few things before they left the next morning. Raiden was going on tour with them and was with his father somewhere in the mall as Paige sat on the bench already exhausted from chasing Raiden around earlier that morning. Her wardrobe had changed greatly over the years. She had checked her boots in for Chuck Taylors and she wore jeans and a shirt almost everyday. She smiled to herself when she saw a little boy run towards her. He was a splitting image of Cone right down to his mini-chucks and little Dickies shorts and had even gotten his hair gelled that morning because he had gone to the barber shop to get a hair cut with Cone. A little Sum 41 shirt that Cone had special made completed the boys ensemble. He ran up to his mother and crawled into her lap giving her a hug. Paige smiled.
“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!” Raiden screamed before he had plopped down on her lap.
“What have you and daddy been up to?” She asked as Cone approached them with a rather large bag in his hands. Raiden smiled.
“We bought dickies and, and,” he paused and pointed at his shoes. He could never remember what they were called for Paige called them Chucks and most normal people referred to them as shoes.
“Chucks?” She asked. He nodded still smiling. “What else did you and daddy buy? Did you keep him out of the toy store?” She asked.
“Nope.” Raiden replied nodding his head. Cone sat beside her and looked at his son wondering why he’d rat on him.
“Jay, what on earth did you buy now? Neither of you boys need another toy, so please tell me you didn’t buy one, though I know you’d only be lying to me. So what is it this time?” Raiden grabbed at the bag as Paige held him back. Jay opened it and pulled out a water gun. Paige shook her head. “Jay, seriously how many of those things do we have? What the crap is the difference between all of them? You don’t think like twenty of them is enough?” Cone smiled handing it to Raiden who pretended to fire it even though it remained in the packaging.
“Well, this ones for Raiden. It’s smaller then mine and I figure with him going on tour with us he’s gonna need one so he can play with me and the guys.” He paused laughing at his son as Raiden crawled off his mother’s lap, sat on the floor, and tried to take the water gun out of its package. “See he loves it.” Cone finished before kissing Paige lightly on the lips.
“All right, all right. So, what else did you buy?” She asked knowing they still needed to make a trip to one more store, her favorite, Hot Topic.
“We both needed new Dickies so I bought a few pairs for me and for him. And I got him another pair of Chucks since he wears the red high tops everyday I figured he needed some black ones. Finally I bought the kid a better belt. That’s it I swear. Well, and the water gun, but look how much he likes it!” Cone finished pointing at Raiden as he still tried to get the gun out of the package.
“Yeah, well, he’s way too much like you sometimes, but you ready to head over to Hot Topic. I gotta buy myself a new pair of Dickies and one of those long sleeved mesh shirt things and some new laces for me and for Raiden since he’s got another pair of Chucks.” She stated as she turned her gaze to Raiden who had somehow managed to get the water gun out of the package and was pretending to shoot people as they walked by. “Raiden! Sweetheart, don’t shoot the people now come here!” She screamed trying to get his attention, but as usual it didn’t work and she had to walk over and pick him up in her arms. “You’re a little devil you know that?” She asked him as he still tried to shoot people with his newfound weapon. Paige shot Jay one of her thank-you-for-giving-that-to-our-son looks as Cone picked up the packaging and threw it in one of the bags. With that done Cone grabbed the bags and they all headed towards Hot Topic.
When they were in the store Raiden went nuts as he always did. He loved being in that store for there was much to see in such a small space. Paige held his hand in hers not wanting him to run off anywhere, but soon Raiden managed to get her to let go and took off before Paige had a chance to get a hold of him.
“Raiden! Come on, this is no time for hide and seek!” She shouted as she began looking for Raiden. Cone was on the other side of the store wondering what Raiden was doing to his mother now. Soon they both heard their son crying as Paige ran towards the sound of his voice. She spotted him sitting on the ground by the CDs. “Raiden, what’s wrong?” She paused taking her son in her arms and soon realizing he had a CD in his grasp. “Shh, it’s OK.” She whispered to him as Cone met up with her, a few wristbands in his hands. “Now then what happened? You OK?” She asked as Raiden took his face from her chest. He showed her the CD in his hands and pointed at the woman on the front, it was his mother’s face.
“It’s your all bam.” He stated. Paige smiled and kissed her son on his forehead. “Some big fat stu-puddle head tried to take it from me and I, you,” he hid his head in her chest again, still holding the CD.
“Ok, Ok, how ‘bout you come with me and pick out some laces for those new shoes of yours and then I’ll buy you the CD.” Raiden nodded and Paige set him back on the ground. Surprisingly he grabbed hold of his mother’s hand and still held the CD with the other. Soon he saw the shoelace display and let go of her hand to run towards it. Cone ran after him and soon was sitting on the ground, Raiden in his lap, looking at the laces.
“Daddy look!” Raiden shouted pulling a pair of black and white checked laces from the display. He showed them to his father smiling.
“Very cool.” Cone replied a little less enthusiastic. Raiden handed the laces to Cone and pulled another pair off the display. They were black with red stars on them.
“These ones! These ones!” He screamed holding them up. He had set the CD down for only a moment. Cone laughed and before he knew it Raiden ran off in search of his mother. “Mommy! Mommy! Look!” He shouted once he had found her. Cone was close behind and grabbed Raiden, turning him around to face him. It always scared the shit out of Cone when his son would run off like he did. It wasn’t safe at all and Cone wasn’t about to lose his son.
“What have we said about running off like that?” Cone asked Raiden sternly holding him by the belt loops so he wouldn’t go anywhere. Raiden looked at the ground then back at Cone.
“No run off.” He whispered. Cone nodded.
“Exactly. No run off.” Cone paused and looked up to meet Paige’s eyes, which seemed to thank him for talking to Raiden. “Now go and show mommy those kick butt laces, eh?” Cone stated causing Raiden’s eyes to light up again. He hugged Cone and ran over to his mother who was now standing within clear sight and showed his laces to her. Soon they paid for their items and walked out of the store Raiden holding on to his new CD and the chain from Cone’s pants. Then he spotted the candy store across the way and took off running again. Paige managed to grab him by his pants causing him to fall on his bottom. She squatted down to his level and helped him up before placing her hands on his waist much like Cone had done earlier.
“Raiden, daddy just talked to you about running off.” Paige stated causing Raiden to look at the ground again. Paige picked him up in her arms and they all headed towards the exit.
As Paige, Cone and Raiden walked out of the mall they noticed Deryck and Skye walking in. Raiden practically jumped out of Paige’s arms and went towards Deryck causing Paige and Cone to laugh. Deryck just smiled. He was like a brother to both Cone and Paige and Raiden called him his uncle.
“Unky Dewryck!” Raiden shouted as Deryck picked Raiden up in his arms and gave him a big bear hug then set him back on the ground. Raiden giggled.
“Raiden! High five kiddo!” Deryck shouted, squatting, and Raiden gave him a high five. Then Deryck picked Raiden up and placed him on his shoulders. He looked at Paige and Cone and smiled. “So, what the heck are you guys doing here?” He asked refraining from using the word hell or fuck in front of Raiden.
“Just doing last minute shopping. You?” Paige asked. Deryck thought a moment and Skye answered for him seeing as he was a bit embarrassed about what exactly he was shopping for.
“Getting stuff for D on the tour. You know the boy hasn’t bought a pair of boxers in over two years? He’s due in for a few pairs.” Skye replied causing Deryck to blush. He looked up and could see Raiden with his chin on his forehead trying to look Deryck in the eyes. Deryck smiled getting an idea in his head as usual.
“Hey, Raiden what do you say I take you to Burger King and we go play in the play place?” Deryck asked smiling. He knew how much Raiden loved the play place. It was amazing that Deryck still fit in the tunnels. Skye smiled.
“Yeah! Let’s go Unky Dewryck!” Raiden replied with a smile. Paige shook her head soon remembering the unpacked suitcases that awaited her at the house.
“Deryck, we were just on our way home. We gotta finish packing and stuff.” Paige replied as Deryck butted in once again trying to coax her into going.
“Come on, it’ll be fun.” Deryck insisted. Skye’s smile widened.
“D, we gotta go and get you underwear.” Deryck frowned. He wanted to play in the play place with his nephew. He shot Skye the puppy eyes. “Fine, but only if I get to play in those tunnels with you.” She replied as the smile returned to Deryck’s face.
“What’d you say Cone? I know you wanna go, come on Cone. I’m buying.” Deryck finished knowing that the last bit would get Cone’s attention.
“Hey, I’m not the one you need to convince.” Cone replied and then turned to Paige. “Paige, come on Deryck’s buying. We gotta eat dinner anyway so why not let Raiden play while we have a nice adult conversation. We haven’t had one of those in years.” Cone smiled and finally he noticed the smile working its way onto Paige’s face.
“OK, but Deryck’s going in that play place and running after Raiden the whole time we’re there ‘cuz I’m done for the day.” Deryck and Raiden cheered as Skye shook her head and knew they were going to have to make a last minute trip to Wal-Mart in the morning now. Still, they were off to Burger King.
Paige and Cone were sitting at one of the tables waiting for their order and having what Cone had referred to as an adult conversation. He had the water gun he had bought in his hands and was examining it trying to figure out exactly what all it could do. He had a fetish for water guns.
“Damn, this thing is awesome. Shit I may be keeping it.” He paused reading how much water it could hold. “Dude! You can buy a backpack thing so you have like non-stop shooting fun! Fuck I’m gonna have to go back tomorrow and buy it. I just might keep this gun, Paige.” Cone stated smiling and going back to examining the gun. Paige raised an eyebrow.
“So, this is what you call an adult conversation, eh?” Paige stated smiling. Cone sighed realizing that he had been talking about a water gun for the last few minutes.
“Paige, I’m sorry. Did you wanna talk about anything? I just got caught up with this water gun. You know how I am. I have an obsession.” Paige’s smile widened at his words. They were sitting next to one another so she laid her head on his shoulder. Cone kissed her lightly on the forehead. She was tired so much more often nowadays. “You gonna be able to get through this tour?” He asked her as he set the water gun down on the table.
“Yeah, I just, Raiden’s a handful. I wouldn’t trade him or change him for the world, but he tires me out, you know? I just can’t keep up with him all the time. He’s like non-stop all the time, but I guess all kids are. I just hope he doesn’t give me a hard time on tour.” Paige replied. She could feel Cone gently slide his arm around her shoulders.
“Do you still want to take him?” He asked hoping she’d say yes. Paige laughed a little at Cone’s question.
“Damn skippy I still wanna take him with. As tired as he gets me I love him too much to leave him for more then a few days.” She stated as their order was called. Cone kissed her gently one more time and went and grabbed their order. Paige walked over to the play place and stuck her head in the door. “Hey you three the food’s ready. You wanna come out and eat?” She asked. Soon Raiden ran to her and took her hand. Once they were seated Paige noticed how Raiden was watching Cone who had moved to the seat across from Paige. He watched as Cone unwrapped his burger and how he picked it up to eat it. Then how Cone took his fries and dumped them all on the burger wrapped and drenched them with ketchup. Paige smiled and kicked Cone lightly in the shin causing him to look at her. She nudged her head in the direction of Raiden and Cone watched as his son did exactly what he had done only moments before. Cone smiled and continued to eat occasionally glancing at his son who watched him through the entire meal.
It was beginning to get late as Paige and Cone sat talking with Skye. She was now going to school in Toronto close to Deryck’s home in Ajax. She was living with Deryck and loving every moment of it. Deryck was still playing with Raiden in the play place. Soon Raiden walked out with Deryck close behind. He walked over to the empty chair that was next to his mother and pushed it until it touched her chair.
“Raiden, what are you doing?” She asked softly. Raiden simply climbed onto the chair and curled up, laying his head on his mother lap and closing his eyes. “Jay, I think it’s time to head home.” Paige stated smiling. Cone smiled back at her.
“Yeah, I think so. You want me to take him?” Cone asked as Paige nodded. Cone picked Raiden up in his arms and Raiden soon began to kick his legs.
“No, daddy I tidy! Let me stay!” He cried.
“We’re gonna go home to your nice warm bed so you can sleep. I know you’re tired.” Deryck began to laugh along with Skye.
“Well, nice to know he can sleep anywhere. He’s build for tours, eh?” Deryck replied. Cone and Paige both laughed.
“Yeah I suppose he is.” With that they all walked out of the Burger King and headed towards their cars. Cone got Raiden into his car seat as Paige climbed into the car Raiden’s red chucks in her hands. Cone soon joined her in the front seat. “Raiden’s out cold. Deryck really wore him out in those tunnels. Man, he’s not gonna wanna get up tomorrow.” Cone stated as he began to drive home.
“Yeah, but he can just go in his pajamas and sleep on the bus. He should be alright.” Paige stated turning back to look at her son as he slept. He seemed so peaceful. “Jay, you think he’s gonna be Ok on that bus for so long?” She asked. She still had that innocence that Cone cherished. He took hold of her hand.
“Paige, he’ll be fine. He’s just happy to be with us and Deryck and the guys. He’ll be fine really. Don’t worry.” He kissed her hand lightly. Cone knew Paige was having second thoughts about bringing Raiden, but he also knew that Paige would be miserable without her son with her. She had at some point developed a unique sense of when things weren’t right. Cone was also beginning to have second thoughts about bringing their son based on Paige’s reactions lately. He knew that something wasn’t quite right but he was unable to think of anything that could possibly go wrong.
