The next morning Kellie woke painfully to a throbbing ankle. She groaned as she sat up and looked around her bedroom. It was 7 am, her usual wake up time. Kellie slid to the edge of her bed and grabbed her crutches. She made her way to the kitchen and grabbed a Pepsi from the fridge and her pain medication. She sat slowly on her couch and groaned again. Not only did her ankle hurt like hell, but the scar along her left hip seemed to be throbbing.
“Why are you bothering me?” Kellie asked as she lifted her night shirt to rub it. The scar wasn’t particularly noticeable unless she wore a swim suit. She didn’t do that often so she tended to forget about it. It hadn’t bothered her in awhile. “Maybe it’s the stress form last night.” Kellie leaned back on the couch and sipped her soda. She clicked the TV on and spent her day parked on the couch. She spent nearly every day that way. Having sprained her ankle on Saturday, by the following Friday she was going stir crazy. As the Doctor had predicted her ankle healed fast and she was moving around with out crutches. She still walked with a pronounced limp and any prolonged standing caused it to swell a little and hurt. So going anywhere had been out of the question.
“Damn!” Kellie slammed her fridge shut. “No Pepsi, no food! I have to get out of this place!” She threw her hands up in the air. “I cannot believe he hasn’t returned my purse yet! Doesn’t he realize I need it?” Kellie limped back to the living room. She was almost to the couch when her buzzer rang. She hobbled as fast as she could to it.
“Yes?” Someone loves me! “I’m sorry to bother you Ms.Parks, but you have a visitor. His name is Mr.Bloom and he says he has your purse.” Fergi’s displeasure evident. “Oh thank you Fergi! Please send him up!” She didn’t wait for his response. A quick look in the mirror by her door showed she looked decent. “I’m glad I decided to shower today.” She spoke to her reflection. Kellie wasn’t unattractive, but she didn’t feel she compared to most of the women in LA. She had long honey blonde hair. It was straight, all one length and fell to her waist. She usually wore a pony tail, but had left it free today. Her skin was pale and clear. She hadn’t had time to work on a “California tan”. She glanced closer at her green eyes and slender nose. “Nope, nothing spectacular here! But not utterly unpleasant to look at.” She whispered. The door bell rang and Kellie hobbled over to open it.
“Hello!” Orlando said. He had a big smile and was holding her purse in front of him. “It suits you, really.” Kellie laughed and backed up to let him in. “I’m sorry it took me so long to return this. I actually didn’t know I had it until yesterday.” He sat her purse on a table by the door and followed her into the living room. “No worries, I haven’t gotten around much. I’ve been with out the crutches for 2 days now.” Kellie sat down and propped her ankle on the coffee table. “I think I would go crazy! I hope you had plenty of visits from your friends.” Orlando sat in a chair across from her. Kellie could only blush. Truth was she didn’t have any friends. It was to hard to talk to total strangers and Kellie had yet to find a social setting she could relax in. “I’ve managed, although I have to admit I am a little bored. I figured I’d get out tomorrow.” Kellie bounced her other leg nervously. “Why wait? Join me for dinner? I promise not to molest you or anything.” Orlando stood and offered her his hand. “You don’t have to. I’m fine.” Orlando wouldn’t take no for an answer. Before Kellie could say anything else she was in the front seat of his car.
“Do you have preference?” Orlando asked as he navigated the streets. Kellie shook her head. “You’re vegan.” She suddenly blurted out. “Yes, but you’re not. We can compromise.” Orlando turned into a small café that over looked the beach. “They cater to all tastes here.” He got out and quickly came around to help her out of the car. “The best part is I can guarantee we won’t be bothered while we eat.” Kellie found out why when they entered. On the outside it looked like a simple café, but inside it was very nice and boasted an upscale patronage. As they made their way to their table Kellie noticed a few stars she knew. Obviously they wouldn’t be bothered. The others were here for the same reason.
They were seated at a table by the windows and could view the ocean. The waiter gave them water and left menus. “Would you like a drink. I prefer ale , but you can have anything you like.” Orlando was extremely solicitous. “Normally yes, but I don’t think it’s a good idea considering my medication.” Kellie opened the menu and began to perused the selections. Everything was separate. There was a vegan section, Indian, American, low carb etc. She didn’t want to offend Orlando by ordering a burger, so she studied the vegan section and the salads. “Please order anything you like. I’m used to people eating meat in front of me.” He smiled. “I promise not to pass out or anything.” Kellie laughed. “I have an idea. Why don’t you order for me, take the pressure off.” She wasn’t sure why she said that, but it seemed like a good idea. “Anything at all, I don’t have food allergies, I just don’t eat bugs, snails or things with 8 or more legs.” Kellie shuddered. “Ok I think I can handle that.” Kellie stared at the sun setting over the ocean as Orlando ordered. After the waiter had left he turned and watched Kellie.
“So where has your roommate been? I hope she hasn’t left you alone this whole time.”
“Roommate? Ah.......I don’t have a roommate.” Kellie blushed and avoided his gaze. She made it a habit not to lie and this was why. She always got caught.
“I had actually gather that. Especially when I came back to the hospital and saw you getting into a cab.” Orlando was smiling.
“I’m really sorry about that. I was intimidated. I.....”
“Don’t worry about it. I can understand how you felt. All is forgiven.”
Orlando was smiling and being so charming. Kellie felt like melting into a puddle on the floor. They continued to chat about random things until their food came. Orlando had ordered her a cheeseburger and fries. Kellie looked at it and then looked at him. He was smiling brightly.
“You’re to damn skinny, figured I’d fatten you up a bit.”
“It was my first choice.”
“Good!”
Kellie enjoyed that burger like no other food. She had been reduced to Ramen noodles for the last 2 days. She ate every last thing on her plate and sighed.
“I take it you enjoyed it?” Orlando asked. The waiter removed their plates and handed him the bill.
“Oh yes! More than you could ever understand.”
The drive home was fairly silent. Kellie took in the scenery and tried to remember the location of the café. All to soon they were back at her building. Orlando accompanied her to her door.
“Thank you for dinner. It was nice to be among the living again.”
“It was my pleasure. Can I help you inside?’
“Please, I think my ankle has had enough.”
Orlando helped Kellie to her couch and got her some water while she propped her foot up. Even though it was healing fast. The ankle still tended to swell when she was on it to much. After popping two pain killers and downing the glass of water Kellie relaxed a little. Orlando had sat in a chair across from the couch and was watching her intently. She blushed and smiled shyly. Not sure what she should say. He finally broke the silence.
“How long have you been living in LA?”
“Only about a month.”
“Do you have a job?”
“No, not yet.”
“So how do you live? Is that too personal?” Orlando was the one to blush this time. Kellie smiled reassuringly at him.
“No, not at all. Lets just say I have a lot of money stashed away. I don’t need a job, but would like one to keep me occupied.”
“You haven’t made any friends here yet?”
“No, I try to get out. I go somewhere new almost everyday.” Kellie looked out her sliding glass doors to the view of the ocean it provided. She would never get tired of that view. “I’m not good with meeting new people. I was hoping to get a job and make some friends that way.”
Orlando was looking at her. He couldn’t believe that someone like her had any problems making friends. She wasn’t tall, maybe average about 5'6". She had long honey blonde hair that fell to her waist. Her eyes were green, a green he could easily stare at all day. He realized he was staring when he heard Kellie clear her throat. Orlando blinked and smiled. “Sorry, I zoned out there for a minute.”
“No problem. It is getting late.”
“Yeah I should probably get going.”
“Thanks again for dinner Mr....”
“Please call me Orli”
“Orli.”
Kellie blushed deeply over the last part. She started to get up to see him to the door. Orli put his hand on her shoulder and gently pushed her back onto the couch. The touch sent a searing heat through both of them. Kellie looked shocked and started breathing faster.
“I can see myself out, you just relax.”
Orli was at the door when he turned and came back to the couch. He leaned over the back and looked right into her eyes. Kellie couldn’t even speak.
“I was wondering if I could have your number?’
“Um....sure....”
“Do you have some paper?”
Kellie gestured to her desk. There Orli found a small not pad with Kellie’s name at the top. It was a pastel blue and the letters were done in a fancy script. He also found a pen. He came back to the couch and handed it to her.
Kellie’s hands were shaking as she wrote her home phone and her cell number down. She handed the tablet to him. Orli ripped off the top piece and then started writing on the next piece. He smiled as he handed it to her.
“I’ll give you a call sometime. Get some rest.”
“I will”
“Bye!”
“Bye.”
With that he was out the door. It wasn’t until then that Kellie looked at the tablet. He had written his own home number and cell down. At the bottom it said “Call me if you need anything. Orli”
Kellie sighed and flopped back.
“Orlando Bloom just took me to dinner and gave me his number!” She shouted.
