“A-Are you talking to me?” The first man stuttered, staring wide-eyed at the angel who addressed him.
“Yes, Darren, I am talking to you….shall we begin?” The angel repeated.
“Begin? Begin what?” Darren asked, confused and nervous about what was going on.
“Yeah, what’s going on? Who are you?” The second man asked, “Why are we here?” The third man shook his head at his companion, clicking his tongue exasperatedly.
“Isn’t it obvious?” He spoke softly, looking at he ground. “We’re dead.” Darren and the second man gasped in disbelief shaking their heads, looking to the angel to deny the third man’s claim. “Aren’t we?” The third man looked to the angel as well, already knowing the answer. The angel looked down, unable to meet any of them in the eyes.
“Yes, I am afraid you are… I apologize for the unusual circumstances gracing your arrival, but these are always tough cases to decide upon, particularly when they have not been previously ordained by the great Maker, therefore we must look at precisely what occurred in order to pass judgment… now…Darren, we shall start with you. Are you ready?”
“I-I don’t understand,” Darren began, stuttering uncertainly, “I-I guess so.”
“Good, please, remain seated…all will be made clear shortly, now we shall begin.”
The unknown light-source that illuminated the room so thoroughly began to dim, making the room almost dark, the three dead-men confused and a little frightened by what was going on. The wall in front of them, that had previously been blank, now served as a sort-of movie screen, a blurred vision coming into focus, on a bright blue-eyed little baby, giggling in his mother’s arms creating a rush of memories that filled Darren’s mind .
“Th-that’s me?!” Darren half-exclaimed half-asked, eyes riveted to the screen as the vision once again blurred, speeding up and then slowing down to reveal a young boy no more than five, with sparkling blue eyes and thick blonde hair. The screen showed him playing in the back yard with a little girl, his sister, and another little boy, his older brother. The children were laughing heartily, playing tag.
Darren’s eyes shone with tears as he watched his child-like self chase after his faster brother to no avail, laughing through his tears as he watched himself trip and fall, crying from the sting of a scraped knee, bringing his mother running out from the house to see what was the matter.
“I-I remember that….” Darren murmured, the memories washing over him like a warm embrace, filling him with scenes from his childhood. The images on the screen once again sped up, now showing Darren in high-school, bullied about by some of the larger boys, the jocks to be precise, he seemed to be an outcast of sorts, not very many friends, always dressed in dark clothing, clinging to an old torn notebook, scribbling furiously in it during class, always writing, little poems and stories. The scene sped up again, to junior year. Showing Darren being shoved to the ground by one of the school’s football players who particularly disliked him. Darren’s notebook fell to the ground, papers flying all over, much to the other teen’s delight as he walked of laughing joyously at Darren’s humiliation. He was picking up his papers frantically, not wanting to be late for his first class, when another, more feminine hand touched his own. Startled, he looked up, to meet the most beautiful pair of warm hazel eyes he had ever seen. The girl smiled at him, helping him to pick up his belongings…they walked off to class together….chatting like old friends.
Darren wiped tears from his eyes as the story of his life replayed on the screen and in his mind, refreshing all his previously forgotten memories.
“Colby…” he murmured the girl’s name in fond admiration. Once again the vision blurred, focusing again on a wedding….he had married the girl, Colby…they had been happy, he remembered…
A new scene appeared now…a garage….his younger self was singing….he looked out in front of him, he was nervous and shaking, performing for three other men, who looked to be brothers….the one in the middle identical to the man sitting in the chair next to him right now.
“Daniel!” Darren exclaimed under his breath, recognition flashing in his eyes, the same as Daniels, as memories began to fill his mind as well….times with Darren, writing music…talking about the future…hopes…dreams….love…
Time sped up again, showing Darren sobbing in Daniels arms, broken-hearted…Darren remembered, Colby had left him…he had caught her cheating on him. He had been so stupid that he wanted to forgive her, forget it ever happened…unfortunately she did not feel the same way…she just…up and left him, leaving Daniel to pick up the broken pieces.
Darren had moved in with Daniel, growing closer to the guitarist…until they were able to admit their feelings for each other…
“Love you…” the image of Daniel on the screen murmured…
“Love you too…” the past Darren murmured back….
Unconsciously Darren moved closer to Daniel, remembering how much he loved the man, Daniel took Darren’s hand in his, puzzled at how someone so full of life could have died so suddenly… it seemed unnatural, wrong somehow….what had happened to them?
“Very well, then, now that you remember your past we shall speed things up to the night in question, your last night on earth.” The angel spoke bluntly, as if the fact that they were dead was of little consequence…and Daniel supposed that was true…now.
Darren nodded his consent, smiling brightly, that smile that Daniel loved to see, being brave, even though Daniel knew it hurt his child-like lover deeply to know that he was no longer living….despite the prospect of heaven, or whatever they called it up here…Daniel knew how much Darren had loved his life. Just the word itself seemed to be embodied in the singer’s every movement, his every laugh, every smile…
“Please…I have to know what happened to me….” Darren prompted the angel to continue with the screening of his life, memories flooding his brain, as time was fast-forwarded to his final night on earth.
“I must warn you, what you are about to see will likely raise more questions within you than answers, for your mind was in a very fragile state, and much of what happened is lost within you.” The angel added, confusing the three inhabitants of the room even further, before he allowed the screen to light up again.
Things seemed normal enough….Darren was alone in the house that he shared with Daniel…however; his lover was nowhere to be found….He seemed just a little sad, sighing to himself as he trudged up the stairs to his bedroom. He dressed for bed quickly, wearing an old faded pair of star wars boxers and a black night shirt. He climbed into bed and the light was shut off, leaving the entire screen dark for several long moments. The rest of the memories were a blur, flashes of light, and crimson, and blood….a piercing scream, feelings of anguish and fear washing over Darren, and then all was white again, the memories vanishing from the wall, leaving the room in stunned silence.
