Later that evening, the three women found themselves at a nice trendy new restaurant called Glow for dinner. Adrienne was beside herself with excitement. She had always wanted to come here but had never gotten a chance to (way out of her price range). It combined her two loves, food and really cool design. Everything was white and silver but, well…glowed with a tint of blue from the lighting. It was so modern and sleek. By the time they got their appetizer, she had already finished half of her plans to move into the air duct and stay here forever. Adrienne, who was resting her head on her hand as she popped some sort of caramelized onion morsel into her mouth and glanced at Nicole who was pushing her food around on her small plate.
Adrienne’s mother shifted her eyes as well from her daughter to Nicole and back to Adrienne, and promptly smacked Adrienne’s arm. “What have I told you about putting your elbows on the table…” she scolded. Adrienne cast her mother a wounded look before adverting her attention back to her friend.
“Are you ok, it’s not like you to not eat if there is food in front of you?” she inquired, then popped another onion thingy into her mouth. “Don’t tell me you are worried about your weight now?”
Nicole, despite the fact that she ate as much in a day as five teenage boys would eat, was as slim as she had always been. Adrienne couldn’t help but be jealous, since she apparently didn’t inherit the gene which gave Asians the ability to be skinny. She had always had to watch what she ate, and worked out. She made a slight grimace at the thought…just because she did it, doesn’t mean that she liked it.
The things I do for social conformity…
Her personal thoughts were broken by the sound of her friend finally answering. “No no, it’s not that…it’s just…I still can’t believe that you are leaving. I guess I still held onto all those childhood promises we made, you know….going to the same college together, getting married at the same time, having kids that would grow up together…” she frowned before pushing her plate away from her. Adrienne felt her heart sink into her stomach. Nicole was like a sister to her, and moving away from her, especially now that they were “adults”, was one of the most painful things she had had to do. It wasn’t like it was her choice…really.
Her mother had given her the option of staying here in the US and go to college here with her friends. However, her father had always wished for her to go to university in Seoul. He never really gave her a specific reason. She had eventually chalked it up to the fact that her father had met her mother while in Seoul, so he thought that she would have better luck finding a decent guy in Korea than here. She had to admit that it wasn’t a bad sentiment, consider the few guys she had dated during high school turned out to be cheating scum.
So, after much arguing and screaming and crying, she had finally decided that she would move to honor the memory of her father. She also had come to the conclusion that it would be best for her mother too, since her mom didn’t have many friends here and would be more comfortable back in Korea with her family.
“Yeah…you know I’m gonna miss you like crazy, Nicole…” she whispered as her eyes became glassy. “But, my mom said that over winter break, I could fly you to Korea to visit me…that’s good right?” Nicole nodded slight and hinted at a bit of a smile, “Yeah…I suppose that it’s better than nothing. Oh I meant to ask you…you know it’s really expensive to have a car shipped to Korea so I was thinking that …maybeyouwouldbewillingtodonateyours…” Nicole didn’t even get a chance to reply before Adrienne cut her off, “I love you…but not that much.”
After a wonderful dinner and an even better dessert, the exhaustion from the day’s activities had finally set in and the three decided to call it a night. Adrienne gave Nicole a quick wave as they dropped her off in front of her house before finishing the rest of the trip to their own. Her mother patted Adrienne’s knee with her hand, “I know that it was a really difficult decision to make, I’m sorry for putting you into that situation.” Adrienne shook her head slightly and looked out the window. “It’s ok,” she replied as she watched streams of lights from shops and cars glide by. “I know it was difficult for you to put me in that situation…but that’s life, I’m used to it giving me a hard time.”
She sighed as she leaned back in her seat, “I just hope that I made the right decision…I suppose that now that daddy’s gone, it is a good idea to get to know the other half of my family….plus I know how much you miss your family, especially now that you guys have patched things up and all.”
As anyone could guess, her mother’s family wasn’t at all happy about her decision to marry someone who wasn’t Korean. Given her grandparent’s wealth and social status, it was quite the scandal. But, her mother had a fighting spirit and refused to let social norms prevent her from being with the one she loved. It was romantic, in a bittersweet kind of way.
She had given up one part of her life for another. “I know what you gave up for daddy, and for me…so I suppose that it’s time for me to give back to you” Adrienne whispered, glancing towards the driver’s seat. Her mom smiled, “Don’t ever think that you owe me anything, I made my decisions for myself and I chose to give up what I did…and it was well worth it.” Adrienne could see tears beginning to well at the corners of her mom’s eyes. Looking away before she started crying herself, she returned to watching the lights and buildings outside.
Within a couple weeks, Adrienne had officially moved from the US to Korea. It was an incredibly busy couple of weeks at that. Between packing and spending time with her friends, she had barely had time to sleep. And then adding the huge all-nighter party that Nicole had thrown in honor of her moving…well that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Adrienne had made use of those fifteen hours on the plane to make up for her much missed beauty sleep.
Her grandparents had met them at the airport, and after a very teary reunion…and awkward introduction on her part they returned to her grandparent’s house. Since the house was more than big enough for her grandparents and their various maids and what not…they had asked for Adrienne and her mother to move in with them. The two had sold most of what they owned that didn’t have any sort of sentimental value to make the move easier, so it didn’t take long for them to get settled in once all of their belongings had arrived.
Adrienne’s new “assistant” Joo-Eun had helped her move into her new room. Adrienne couldn’t complain…really. The room was huge and included her own private bathroom. There was a walk in closet and dressing area and the bed…well the bed was ginormous. The only thing…it was all stark white.
No no no this will not do…she mused. Well…it’s not like I will be here for long anyway. She opened the doors to her..yes her balcony. “Though I have to admit…this is pretty posh,” she said to herself as she leaned on the white stone railing. She gazed out across the street that was in front of her. The neighborhood was busier than hers back in her hometown. There seemed to be a lot more children playing outside…or teenagers hanging out with their friends. She caught a glimpse of a group of girls giggling and her eyebrow raised a little bit. The young man...seemingly attractive, who seemed to be whom the giggles were intended for, was walking up towards her front door.
Odd…I thought it was just my grandparents who lived here
What was even weirder was when another boy came jogging up behind him. “Ha-Jung….Hey wait up!” the guy yelled, finally catching up to the first guy, who had stopped in the middle of the long driveway. Adrienne squinted, trying to get a better look at the two. Ha-Jung tilted his head in her general direction, and glared.
Is he…glaring at me? The nerve!!! She pulled a face and crossed her arms across her chest. He doesn’t even know me and he’s looking at me like that…jerk she thought as she turned slightly and leaned her side against the railing…figuring if she adverted her attention elsewhere…than so would that annoying guy.
“Hey…heeeeeey” the second guy waved his hands in front of Ha-Jung’s face. “What are you looking …at? Waaaaaaaaah! What a pretty girl!! Who is she…why is she in your grandparent’s house?? Can you introduce me…I will surely win her over with my charms!” He gushed as he smugly struck a pose, inducing another fit of giggles from the apparent fan club that had collected itself on the other side of the gate. “Shut up Jun…it’s just my cousin. My half-breed cousin,” he retorted as he quickly glared at her again, before finally entering the house.
Adrienne huffed in minute exasperation before returning to her room.
“Man I’m not even here for a week and I’m already getting grief from someone I don’t even know! I was afraid of this…” she said to herself. She didn’t have much time to dwell on the recent incident; Joo-Eun popped her head into the doorway, “Excuse me miss, your family requests your presence in the formal living room…and if I may speak freely?” She whispered. Adrienne gave a slight nod and Joo-Eun continued,
“I couldn’t help but overhear you talking to yourself. Don’t worry about that young man, he’s a bit…cold.” With that, Joo-Eun bowed quickly and continued down the long hallway.
Adrienne composed herself, checked herself quickly in the mirror, and grudgingly made herself down to her family. Obviously that…boy was down there, and she had no desire to meet him. She entered the impressive family room and cleared her throat to announce her presence. As soon as she was noticed, she bowed politely and greeted the group of people in front of her.
Sure enough, he was there, leaning against the bookcase and looking thoroughly bored. Adrienne glanced sideways at him and scowled slightly before sitting down next to her mother, who had patted the sofa in invitation. Her grandmother, who was occupying herself with her cup of tea, seemed to be quite uncomfortable. She might seem like a distant old woman, but Adrienne supposed that’s what society did to you after a while. Setting her cup and saucer down on the small glass table in front of her, she smiled faintly,
“Min, I thought that I would invite you down here to meet your cousin, Ha-Jung. I asked him to stop by and meet you, since I knew that you didn’t know anyone your age… I thought that it might be wise for you to get to know each other. Maybe he could introduce you to some new people.” She trailed off.
Ha-Jung rolled his eyes before quickly bowing to his grandmother. “Of course, grandmother, it would be a pleasure.” Adrienne’s eyes darkened at the sound of the obvious sarcasm dripping from the end of his statement.
“In fact, my friend already wants to meet her,” he added before walking behind Adrienne and resting his hands on her shoulders, giving a little pinch. Resisting the urge to rip off his fingers one by one, Adrienne adjusted and then stood, sliding out of his grasp. “Thank you grandmother for your consideration, I think that it’s a wonderful idea,” she said as she bowed politely. Her grandmother breathed what sounded to be a breath of relief and nodded, “Well then, off you go, don’t be out too late.”
With that, Adrienne turned to her cousin, glared and walked out. Ha-Jung followed, his long strides not showing any implication of hurriedness. Once out of earshot of the rest of the family, Ha-Jung finally spoke, “Don’t think I’m going to parade you around to my friends, we have no need for half-breeds following us around. The only reason I’m introducing you to Jun is because maybe if he is so enamored with you, he will annoy you and leave me alone,” he said caustically before calling for his friend.
Adrienne snorted, "Don't think for a second that I want to have anything to do with a pompus jerk like you. You're good looks and mysterious charm whatever you are trying to pull might turn that group of girls into twitering idiots, but it sure has hell isn't going to intimidate me," she retorted, jabbing her finger into his chest. Ha-Jung's dark eyes sparked with anger as a tall, rather slender young man, who Adrienne could only assume was Jun, entered the great hall. He bowed and the took her hands,
“Hello, it’s so very nice to meet such a pretty girl. I took the time to pick these for you, myself, in a field of wildflowers…” he continued as the thrust a bouquet of yellow and cream flowers in her face. She and Ha-Jung both rolled their eyes. She caught the glimpse of a sales tag around the cellophane.. A field of wildflowers…riiiiight. Like there is one in the middle of the city…idiot. Adrienne sighed and smiled,
“Thank you, that was very thoughtful of you. She said taking the flowers and setting them on a side table. It was a sweet gesture and Jun was kind of cute…but way to creepy for her taste. “If you will excuse me, I have some things to attend to, It was nice meet you Jun, see ya around.” She said as she hastily made her way up the stairs.
Ok…so maybe my dad was wrong…Korean boys are just as bad as American ones…I think that I will just resign myself to spinsterhood at the age of 18…that sounds really appealing right now.
Adrienne shut her door behind her and flung herself on her bed. She was already missing home and her friends. She could be at the beach or a café right now with Nicole…but no she was here with her snotty cousin and his psycho friend who was already planning his wedding to her. There is only one cure for a crappy day like this…shopping.
