Part II
Please Just Don’t Play With Me
It was now summer as Tyson sat next to Piper on an old park bench in Central Park. The tour had taken them to New York City. Piper and Luke were still dating, but he didn’t want to go to the park, claiming it as being boring and run down, so she grabbed Tyson and had him come instead. He was feeding the pigeons, which generally is never a good idea, especially in New York.
“Stop feeding the freaky red-eyed birds. The more you feed them the longer they stay.” Piper declared. Tyson laughed.
“Freaky red-eyed birds? I thought they were pigeons.” He rebutted. She cocked her eyebrow.
“I hate pigeons. They’re like Satan’s birds or something!” Tyson couldn’t help it. He burst out in fits of laughter. She got up and ran off. Tyson took after her.
“Piper, come on! Don’t run off!” He screamed. She kept running, trying desperately not to giggle. Unfortunately for her, he was twice as fast as she was and soon caught up with her, tackling her to the ground. He pinned her to the ground, a huge smile playing on his lips. She was laughing. “You must be punished.” He stated. Then he began to tickle her, making her laugh even harder.
“Ty, come on stop!” She screamed through her laughter. “Stop!” Finally he stopped. By this point Piper had a fresh trail of tears flowing down her face from laughing so hard. Tyson stood and held out his hand to help Piper off the ground. She graciously took it, but pulled him to the ground and took off once again in the direction of the street. He got up and chased after her. When she emerged onto the sidewalk there was news crews everywhere. Tyson soon emerged from the park and grabbed Piper by the arm, not realizing the crews until they were shoving microphones under his nose. Unconsciously they grabbed one an others’ hands. Piper was met with a microphone in the face.
“How long have the two of you been dating?” One reporter asked.
“What? Dating? Me and Ty?” She asked. The reporter nodded. “We’re not dating. We’re just good friends. My boyfriend is sitting on my tour bus. His name is Luke.” She replied. Tyson’s features hardened as he pushed through the reporters with Piper close behind. He still had her hand in his. “Ty, slow down! I can’t walk that fast!” She screamed at him as he was practically running across the street. He pulled her into an old office building. “What’s wrong? Why did you start storming off like that?” She demanded. His features softened.
“I hate reporters. Especially on my day off.” He replied. She smiled and then noticed that their hands were still intertwined. She pulled her hand back as her eyes got big. “Piper, what’s wrong?” He asked, genuinely concerned.
“How long exactly have we been holding hands?” She asked, fear rising in her voice. He thought a minute.
“Shit.” He replied. “Those reporters got a picture of us, together, holding hands. No wonder they asked if we were dating.” He turned away from Piper, and smiled to himself. Bye-bye Luke! He thought to himself, quickly regaining his composure and turning to face her again.
“What am I gonna tell Luke? He’ll never understand. I just totally freaked out when I saw those reporters.” She replied, almost crushing Tyson’s emotions. She just freaked out? He asked himself.
“We’ll tell him together. It was just an accident.” He told her, though he was lying, more to himself then to her.
Piper and Tyson were quiet the entire cab ride back to the buses. Tyson was trying to play back the entire incident as Piper planned out exactly how to tell Luke that reporters had gotten a picture of her holding Tyson’s hand. She knew, with Luke being as territorial as he was, that he would never understand. She knew, even if they stayed together, he’d have a hard time trusting her again. They both let out a groan as the buses came into view, but turned to smile at one another, having realized that they groaned at the same time. When the cab came to a stop Tyson paid the driver and he and Piper both got out and headed towards the buses. Piper stopped in front of her bus and turned to face Tyson.
“Look, I’ve been thinking. Let me do this alone.” He looked hurt, and she could tell. “I’ll come see you afterwards, and tell you everything, OK?” He nodded and headed towards his own bus. Piper entered her bus to find Luke sitting on the couch watching MTV. Their gazes met and he could tell she had something to tell him.
“How was the park?” He asked, not knowing that Tyson had come along. She sat next to him.
“About the park, umm, Tyson went with me and well, we got bombarded by reporters, and I got scared and grabbed his hand, and they got a picture. Please, don’t be mad and don’t believe what the tabloids say.” He had barely caught every word, due to the fact that she had practically run every thing together.
“What?” He asked, confused.
“Tyson and I went to the park together.” She paused, letting him take that part in. “We got attacked by reporters and I got scared.” He nodded. “I grabbed hold of Ty’s hand and they got a pic…” Luke cut her off.
“What!?” He screamed. He was now standing.
“I freaked out! I told them that you and I were dating. Just chill!” She screamed back. He calmed a little and sat beside her.
“Do you like him?” He asked, knowing how often Piper and Tyson had been hanging out together.
“As a friend, but nothing more, promise.” He seemed to accept that and gave her a quick kiss, though there was a growing doubt in the back of his mind.
Meanwhile on the other bus, Tyson was telling Nick everything that had happened that after noon. Mike and Chris were off somewhere in New York City, picking up chicks, nonetheless.
“I’m still thanking God for those reporters! But I’m wondering how the hell they knew that Piper and I were gonna be there.” Tyson stated. Nick smiled and it suddenly hit Tyson. “You called them and told them didn’t you?” He asked.
“Of course not! I would never interfere!” He declared, sarcastically.
“Thanks man. I just hope Luke doesn’t go over board and hit her or anything. He seems like the kind of guy who would do something like that.” He thought aloud.
“He’s not gonna hit her over something like this, but he sure as hell isn’t gonna like you after this.” Nick stood, having heard a knock at the door. When he opened it he saw Piper standing there with a smile on her face. “Tyson, it’s for you!” He screamed. Tyson walked over and saw Piper. “I’ll be in the back.” Nick stated running off. She walked onto the bus.
“So, you and Luke cool?” He asked hoping she’d say no.
“Yeah, I explained what happened and we’re cool. I just came over to tell you.” There was an awkward silence. Their eyes met. Piper was the one to break the contact. “I’m gonna get back to Luke. I’ll see you at the show tonight.” With that she walked off the bus. Tyson picked up the nearest thing he could find, an empty beer bottle, and threw it across the room.
“FUCK!” He screamed as the glass hit the wall. Nick emerged from the back room.
“Dude, what the hell?” He asked and then seeing Tyson’s face, had his question answered. “Everything’s cool between them?” He more asked then stated. Tyson nodded.
“She’s fucking playing with me! She’s messing with my head! One minute we’re rolling around on the grass in Central Park and the next she’s kissing her damn boyfriend! She’s playing with me and I don’t wanna fucking be played with!” He screamed as he sat on the floor, his back against the wall. He covered his face with his hands and Nick could hear his now muffled cries. Nick didn’t know what to do. He’d never seen Tyson this upset before.
Nick stood outside of Piper’s dressing room. He could hear her warming up her voice as he knocked on the door.
“Come on in, it’s open!” She screamed continuing to warm up her voice. She turned to see who was walking in as Nick closed the door behind him. She stopped warming up. “Nick, hey what’s up?” She asked.
“We gotta talk.” He said. Piper knew that any conversation started with those words were never good.
“OK.” She replied as they both sat on the small couch in the room.
“Do you realize what you’re doing to Tyson?” He asked bluntly. Piper wore a look of confusion.
“What do you mean? Is Ty all right?” She asked. Nick sighed.
“Piper, you’re playing with his head. You have a boyfriend, but you’re constantly flirting with Tyson. It’s gotten to his head. You need to back the fuck off before you hurt him.” Nick had come right out and said it. Piper now was looking at the ground. He thought about how she had reacted. “You didn’t even realize you were playing with his head, did you?” She looked up at him and he could see the tears welling in her eyes. He took her into a hug. “Just let him know that you guys are just friends if you really don’t have feelings for him. He’s real confused and hurt right now. Let him know what’s going on.” He whispered to her. I can’t believe she didn’t know she was fucking with his head. He thought as he let go of her and headed back to his own dressing room. He stopped in the doorway. “Tyson’s not to know about this conversation. He’d kill me if he knew I said anything.” Piper nodded as Nick closed the door behind him.
A week had passed and Tyson had kept his distance. Piper hadn’t let on that she knew why. It was the night of yet another show and Piper was again in her dressing room. Tyson was walking down the hallway, from his dressing room on down to hers. He stopped in front of the door, contemplating whether or not to knock. Then he heard the music coming form her dressing room. He placed his ear to the door and could hear an old Sum 41 song. He knocked on the door and opened it; having heard Piper yell to him that it was unlocked. He closed the door behind him and then turned to find Piper lying on the floor with her eyes closed.
“What are you doing?” Tyson asked trying not to laugh.
“Ty, I’m relaxing.” He cocked his eyebrow and she smiled. “Come and try it.” He lay next to her on the floor. “Close your eyes.” He did and so did she. “Concentrate on nothing but the music. If you do it right when you stand up you’ll feel kinda dizzy.” He did what she said and soon he could feel the music through every vein in his body. The music began to pulse within him. He quickly opened his eyes having heard the door slam shut. “Who was that?” He asked sitting. “Wow, you’re right about the dizziness.” She sat next to him.
“Probably just Luke. He’s way too territorial. It gets on my nerves sometimes.” She stood and looked out the door to find no one there. “Well, who ever it was, they’re gone now.” She turned to look at the clock on the wall. “Crap, I’ve gotta go. Wish me luck!” Tyson gave her a hug and to her astonishment a kiss on the cheek.
“Good Luck.” He whispered, exiting the room. She stood there completely dazed as he walked down the hall to his own dressing room.
The next night Tyson watched as Piper ran through a sound check. She had to move the microphone stand to her level, since he had used it before her and was at least four inches taller.
“Damn tall people.” She mumbled smiling at Tyson. He smiled back.
“Don’t hate the tallness ‘cuz you’re vertically challenged!” He screamed back at her. She rolled her eyes and continued on with the sound check. He watched as she pulled her hair up into a loose ponytail.
“She’s beautiful isn’t she?” Someone behind him asked. Without thinking he responded.
“Yeah, she’s perfect.” He quickly turned when it registered that he had said that comment out loud. Sure enough Luke was standing behind him and he didn’t look happy. “Hey, Luke what’s up?” He asked, trying desperately to play it off. Luke didn’t buy it.
“You’re fucking around with her aren’t you!?” He screamed.
“No, of course not. Dude, chill out.” Tyson responded taking a step back. Luke seemed to just get angrier at this comment.
“Don’t fuck with me! I saw the two of you in her dressing room last night!” Luke screamed even louder, catching Piper’s attention.
“Man, she was just showing me that ‘music meditation’ shit she does. Relax, there’s nothing going on between us.” That was a flat out lie. He thought to himself. Before he had the chance to move Luke’s fist had made contact with his jaw, sending his face turning to the side. Tyson was furious and hit Luke. Soon the two were well into a fistfight. Piper ran over to them.
“Luke, for God’s sake! Get off him!” She screamed. He backhanded her and she went flying into the cheap plastic speaker, breaking it. The broken plastic sliced her upper shoulder as she slid down to the floor. Tyson turned when he heard her hit the speaker.
“Piper!” He screamed as Nick grabbed hold of him. Mike and Chris had grabbed hold of Luke. “Let me go!” He screamed. Nick obeyed and Tyson ran over to Piper. He took hold of both her shoulders in an attempt to help her up, but let go immediately after she cried out in pain. He looked at his hand, which was now stained with blood. “Piper…” He whispered. She was now sitting in front of him. She looked at Luke.
“Luke, it’s over! It’s fucking over! Get your shit and go the fuck away!” She screamed as the tears that were welling in her eyes began to fall. She turned to meet Tyson’s eyes. “Ty…” She whispered as he took her into his arms, careful not to touch her shoulder. There she cried, in Tyson’s arms, as he whispered words of comfort to her. Luke had made his exit.
