I sat down next to Kirk, and James sat on the other side of me.
“You ok?” Kirk asked, gripping my hand warmly.
“I’m fine Kirk, really.” I told him sending him what I hoped was a reassuring smile.
“Good.” Kirk smiled back and putting his arm behind my shoulders and squeezing. A hug was too difficult a manouver behind the table. Lars was chatting excitedly with Simone and Rob was sitting back, his dark eyes watching me, there was a look in his eyes I couldn’t really place. As I took a sip of my drink I felt a warm hand on my knee. I could see both Robs and Kirks hands, but not James’, and he had an innocent look on his face that wasn’t fooling anyone. I hid my grin behind my glass as James’ hand started to wander a little higher.
“Hi guys!” A small dark haired woman said as she reached our table. I soon found out who she was because Kirk stood up to hug her warmly. Must be Lani.
“Val, this is my wife Lani.” Kirk confirmed. I stood up and shook her hand.
“Nice to meet you.”
“And you. I hear you’re quite the surfer.” She grinned at me as she sat down.
“Well, I can keep up with Kirk, I guess thats something.”
She said hello to the other guys and I took another sip on my drink, but James chose that moment to brush his thumb over the crotch of my jeans. A jolt of heat shot through me causing me to almost choke on my drink. I glared at James who merely grinned, the picture of innocence.
The next hour passed with lively chatter and even more drinks, although I had decided to switch to water. The room had thankfully stopped spinning and I was enjoying myself. As I started to sober up however, the unwanted image of Steve kept popping into my head. I looked at my watch, it was almost 4 in the morning. Definatly time to get home. I stood up to say my goodbyes to the group, Rob insisting I meet him at the beach the next day to go surfing and giving me another bear hug. James kissed me on the cheek, and grabbed my ass when nobody was watching. When he felt me stiffen he just winked at me cheekily and let me go. Lars insisted on the hand kissing routine again and after I hugged Kirk and Lani goodbye I finally made it out of the club. For once getting a cab wasn’t a problem, and I was home before I knew it. I walked in, feeling slightly nervous when I saw Steve was still awake, his warning still ringing in my ears.
“Well well well the little slut finally made it home.” He said nastily when I stepped into the livingroom.
“Listen Steve there is no need to get nasty.” I told him warily. “You go out all the time. Am I supposed to sit around and wait for you?”
“No, but goddamnit don’t go out and meet some guys behind my fucking back.” He said, standing up to tower above me threateningly.
“Oh come on. Behind your back? Me and Simone were just hanging out with a group of people, I wasn’t running out to meet a guy.”
“Don’t lie to me bitch!”
“Hey!” I said loudly, finally getting good and pissed off. “You do not call me a bitch!” I continued, jabbing my index finger in his chest with every word.
“You think you can tell me what to do?” He said, gripping my hand in his much bigger one and twisting my arm painfully behind my back.
“Let go of me!” I yelled at him.
Instead of letting me go he raised his left hand and slapped me hard across the face. I sank to the floor, ears ringing with the taste of blood in my mouth. Apparantly satisfied that I wasn’t going to mouth off any more Steve went into the bedroom, slamming the door behind him. I soon as the door closed, I shot to my feet, grabbing my purse and Jarrys leash. The dog had been sitting next to the couch, growling and baring his teeth at Steve. When I stood up he rushed over to me barking softly.
“Come on boy, it will be alright.” I told him making my way quietly out of the house, and into my car and took off foot to the gas petal.
I drove around aimlessly for a while, and ended up at the beach. I sat down in the sand and stared numbly at the water. What the hell had just happened? I simply couldn’t believe the bastard had actually hit me. I was still sitting there when the sun came up, and I didn’t move until 8 o’clock when I finally remembered I had a surf date with Rob. I decided to walk to the shop, mainly to pass the time. Jerry walked beside me, tongue wagging happily. Looking at him fondly, I wished my life was as simple as his. Thankfully it was Sunday, and the shop was closed, so I shouldn’t bump into Steve. I entered the shop, locking up after myself and walking straight to my office and adjoining bathroom, where I kept a change of clothes and swimwear. I changed into a lime green bikini and yellow sweatpants, braided my hair and removed my makeup. Ready to hit the beach, or so I thought. When I glanced into the mirror I noticed a bruise forming on my cheek. Wonderful. I happened to have tinted daycream and concealer in the bathroom, along with waterproof maskara. After applying that, and lip salve I looked a little better, the bruise was gone, as was the shadows under my eyes after the sleepless night. I headed back to the beach parkinglot, since I had left my surf board and beach bag in the back seat of my car. When I reached my car I got my purse first and checked my phone, there were two missed calls, both from Steve.
“Bastard” I cursed him under my breathe, and turned my phone off. Grabbing my bag and board I went back to the beach and managed to get a really great spot by the ocean since is was still early. Laying out my towel I stretched out, preparing to get some rays. The next thing I knew somebody was shaking my awake.
“You go feed the damn dog Steve.” I mumbled.
I heard chuckles, and then a deep voice said “You want me to offer him myself then? Cause I don’t see any dogfood around babes.”
Finally waking up, I squinted up at Rob.
“Can’t you just go hunt a shark or something?” I asked him yawning.
“I think the shark would win, but I could give it a shot.” He said teasingly
“Wuss.” I giggled. “Man I can’t believe I fell asleep, I really don’t want to burn up.”
“Didn’t you sleep much last night?”
“Not much, it was a late night I guess.” I said vaguely. This wasn’t the time to discuss my problems. “Let’s hit the waves, ok?” I grabbed my board and told Jerry to guard my place.
A couple hours later we got out of the water and lay back on the towels. After a few minutes I sat up.
“You want something to drink? I’m parched.” I asked Rob.
He sat up too and said “Sure, why don’t I go and get some-.” He ended mid sentance and started at my face.
“What, have I turned green?” I asked him, totally forgetting about the bruise.
“What the hell happened to you?” He demanded.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your face Val! You have a huge bruise on your cheek!” He exclaimed, pointing at my face.
“Didn’t your mother teach you it isn’t polite to point?” I said flippantly. Damn it, what was I supposed to say?
“I was still drunk when I got home, and I walked into the door.” He just gave me a “yeah right” look and didn’t say anything. “Ok...I fell down the stairs. No?” Seeing his disbeleiving face, I sighed.
“Fine...Steve wasn’t in a good mood when I got home.”
“He HIT you?!” He said loudly, his brown eyes widening.
“He smacked me once. It’s not like he did an Ike Turner or something.” I said placatingly. Rob just snorted.
“Thats still abuse Val. You don’t know when he’ll do it again.”
“So what do you want me to do? Go live in a box? Come on Rob, we both know I have to go home. I have a life with him, the shop...” My voice trailed off.
“Bullshit. I’m calling Kirk, have him talk to you. You’re not going home Val.” He said, digging up his phone from his bag. I rolled my eyes and lay down on my towel. Why did everybody insist on taking all my decisions for me?
After Rob had called Kirk to tell him to come over he lay down next me and took my hand in his, squeezing slightly.
“You wanna talk about it?” He asked sofly.
“Well I’m guessing Kirk will want to know all about it, so it will probably be better if I wait for him and tell you both at once.”
“No problem, babes.”
“You really don’t have to make such a big deal about this you know.” I pointed out irritably.
“Maybe i’m making a big deal out of this because I don’t want to see you bruised after some asshole.” He said camly, but I could hear an undertone of anger in his voice.
I couldn’t think of anything to say to that, because his attitude was confusing me to say the least, so we lay there in silence until Kirk showed up.
“Hey guys” He greeted us cheerfully and sat down next to Rob. “Hey, what happened? Something wrong?”
I had to smile at that, Kirk was as sensitive to peoples moods as ever.
“Hey man, yeah you could say that.” Rob answered him, and I sat up in time to catch the questioning look that Kirk sent him. Before I could say a word, Kirk noticed the bruise.
“What the hell happened to you Val?!” He exclaimed. I rolled my eyes again, this time so far I could see hair growing.
“Seriously, you’d think I was front page news.” I grumpled to myself. Then to Kirk, I said “Me and Steve had a fight. Thats it. But I think Rob wants to gather the villagers and light the torches.”
Neither smiled at my attempt at humour though, two pairs of brown eyes were looking at me, frowning in worry. In Rob’s case it was actually quite intimidating.
“I think the best solution is that Val comes home with me.” Kirk announced.
“What?” Of all the things I had expected from him, that wasn’t on the list.
“At least for tonight. I’m not going to influence your decision about him Val, but you need to stay away from him for a while.” He said fimly.
“Yeah, exactly.” Rob added.
“Ok, what will me staying away from him for a night do me good?” I asked.
Maybe it was from lack of sleep, but I wasn’t sure I was following this conversation.
“Because believe me sweety, things will look different after you’ve had a chance to think about this, and have a good sleep. And most importantly you really need to make it clear that he cannot hit you, even if you don’t leave him. If you go straight back he will think it’s ok to smack you around.”
“I really appriciate your offer Kirk, but I don’t think Lani would like having me around, she dosn’t even know me.”
“She told me last night that she liked you, and given your situation, she would also demand you come stay with us, at least tonight.” He scooted over to me and hugged me tightly. “Come on Val, you know it’s the right thing to do. And Rob thinks so too, right Rob?” He said.
“Oh definatly. You need to think things through, and you can’t do that after spending a night on the beach.” Rob said.
“How do you know that?” I mumbled. I felt Kirks chest shaking slighty, and Rob chuckled as well.
“Not to be rude babes but I can see the shadows under your eyes, and lets not forget you were sleeping when I got here.” Rob said smiling.
“So that makes you Columbo?” I said dryly, but spoiled the effect by yawning.
“Come on you, I’m taking you home and putting you to bed.” Kirk announced, standing up and dragging me with him.
“But what about Jerry?” I asked, realising he would have to come with me.
“I have two dogs at home, and I bet they would like to make a new friend. Kirk said as we started to walk towards the parking lot.
We said goodbye to Rob at the his car, and I told Kirk I’d follow him in my car.
All the time I was driving behind Kirk I was debating the wisdom of what I was doing. The battle seemed to be between my my safe side, also known as my Inner Voice, and my wilder side. That side had caused me to leave my parents house at 16 to move in with an older man. It had also caused me to take up diving and surfing, when my Inner Voice tryed to tell me it wasn’t safe. Not to mention when I opened my shop, I used all the money I had in the world to buy my first shipment of boards. Thankfully that had worked out, my Inner Voice could be a bloody I-told-you-so.
“I can’t believe you are actually going to his house!” Inner Voice was nagging me.
“Well what would you have me do?”
“There are motels around here you know. Or you could visit your parents. I can’t believe you’re just blithely following him to his house because he said so.” Inner Voice huffed.
“I’m not moving in you know. Whatever happens, this is temporary.”
This was getting me nowhere fast, so I tryed to direct my thoughts elsewhere, and that led me straight to James. What do I do about him? And what the hell happened in that club? A look, a touch from him turned my stomache to mush. The trouble is, James wasn’t listed as “potential boyfriend” in my rolodex, he was listed under “married rock star.” Chasing after him would be like chasing after the doomsday orgasm.
My thoughts were interupted when I noticed Kirk had put his blinker on, and was about to turn into a very long driveway. We were there.
The split level house was very large, with a garden around it as well. I parked my car next to Kirks and got out with Jerry on my heels.
“Are you sure Lani will be ok with this?” I asked Kirk nervously as we walked up the path leading to the massive front door.
“I called her on the way over, she’s happy to have you.” He assured me. “She’s a little confused as to why you’re coming, but it’s up to you if you don’t want to tell her.”
“Well, judging by yours and Robs reaction, I’d say my face speaks for itsself.”
“True” He chuckled opening the door, and ushering me inside.
Immediatly two rather small dogs, one white and the other brown came running, barking excitedly. They stopped short seeing me and Jerry standing there. Jerry lay down, wagging his tail. I guess thats his nonthreatening pose, because it seemed to work. The dogs inched their way over to him and they started sniffing each other, the dog equivilent of a handshake I suppose.
“Thats Darla and Hoku” Kirk told me, bending down to greet them properly.
“Come on, I’ll give you the tour.” Kirk grinned at me and led the way. The first thing I noticed that there were alot of skulls pretty much all over the place, and that the house was decorated in dark, dramatic colours.
“This place is uh....very unique.” I said finally.
Kirk just laughed at me “Freaked out by the skulls huh?”
“A little bit yeah.”
“Well no worries, your room is skull free.”
He had finished showing me the ground floor, which mostly consisted of a kitchen, dining room, living room, huge bathroom and a den with an expensive tv set and alot of dvd and old movies, complete with hufe comfy couch. Apart from the cupboards full of skulls and other things I didn’t really want to know what was the house was in fact very nice and homey. We climbed the stairs to the second story, which had quite a few bedrooms and bathroom, but also a library and music room of sorts.
“This really is an awesome place.” I said to Kirk
“Glad you like it.” He grinned at me and opened another door. “This is your room” he announced.
It was a very large and bright room, with hardwood floors and the walls painted a soft yellow colour. A queen size bed was beneath the windows, and there was a desk and chair, and also a recliner with a standing reading lamp. There were two doors that I was about to ask Kirk about when Lani came out of one of them, answering my question. Behind her I could see a bluetiled bathroom with a big tub.
“Hi Val.” She said warmly, as she gave me a hug. “I was just putting clean towels in the bathroom. So how are you?” She said in a worried tone, her eyes going to the bruise on my cheek.
“I’m fine.” I hurriedly assured her. “I had a cerfew disagreement with my boyfriend last night.” I said with a rueful laugh, indicating my face.
“Well good thing you came here.”
“I think Val needs to get some sleep.” Kirk said from the doorway. “You must be getting pretty tired.”
“Yeah I am, although it feels wierd to be going to bed in the middle of the day.”
“There are nightgowns and T-shirts in the closet, help yourself. We’ll be around when you get up.” Lani said moving towards the door.
“Do you want me to put Jerry out in the garden?” Kirk asked
“That would be good, thanks.” I said, yawning.
They bid me goodnight and closed the door behind them sofly. Since I didn’t see a dresser anywhere, I was guessing door number two was the closet Lani mentioned. Bingo. I walked in thinking to myself “Closet? This room is bigger then my bedroom at home!”
I chose an large metallica shirt to sleep in and leaving what I had been wearing in the closet, I snuggled under the covers and fell alseep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
I woke up to the sun shining through the curtains. I looked over at alarm clock, it was 8 o’clock, and I was guessing a.m. “Wow, i’ve slept over 14 hours!” I thought to myself. I got up hurriedly and went to the bathroom, and showered in record time. I dryed my hair, dressed in the bikini and sweatpants I had been wearing, but added a smaller metallica shirt I found in the closet. I headed downstairs to the loud voices I heard coming from the kitchen. When I got to the kitchen I wasn’t surprised to see that the loud voices belonged to James and Lars, although Rob and Kirk were also present.
“Good morning” I said cheerily as I made my way to the coffeemaker.
“Morning” Rob and Kirk echoed. Turning around, I saw Lars and James were merely watching me, not saying a word.
“Kirk wasn’t lying, that bastard really did a job on you” James said finally, his brow furrowed in a frown.
“Do you want his face rearanged? Cause I know somebody who could take care of it...” Lars offered helpfully.
“I’m not hiring a thug to beat up my boyfriend.” I said laughing. “But thanks for the offer. Oh and Kirk, do you know where I left my purse?”
“In the foyer.”
“Thanks. See you guys around.”
After Val left the room, there was an uneasy silence in the room.
“Is she for real?” James said, incredulous.
“What do you mean’” Kirk asked.
“She still talks about him as her boyfriend, after what he did to her!”
Kirk sighed heavily. “She’s just confused right now, give her a little time and I’m sure she’ll make the right decision.”
“I don’t care what she thinks, she isn’t going back to him.” Rob declared.
“Oh relax.”
“I’m gonna get going before you two start bickering like a married couple.” Lars said and started for the door.
“Wait for me man.” James called and went after him, leaving Kirk and Rob alone.
“So tell me, what up with you?” Kirk asked looking Rob in the eyes.
Rob chose to play dumb. “What do you mean?”
“Come on man, you are acting weird around Val and you know it.”
“I just like her, you know? And it’s tough watching her with bruises after her boyfriend and she acts like it’s no big deal.”
“I don’t really think this is the best time for you to start liking her Rob. She has alot of issues right now.”
Rob sighed and shook his head. “I know, i’m not going to do anything. I know it’s way to soon, but I’d like to just be her friend and help her out of this.”
Kirk nodded and slapped Robs shoulder lightly. “Thats a better plan my friend.”
Kirk waved goodbye to Lani who was out in the garden, and he and Rob left for HQ.
I found my purse lying in the foyer like Kirk said. I took my phone and went back up to my room to check my messages.
“You have 5 new messages” The robotic voice informed me.
The first was from Simone. “Hey Val, there was no answer at your house, or your cell so I’m guessing you’re at the beach...gimme a call ok, bye.”
“Where the hell are you? It’s after noon, you had better get home soon Valerie.” Steve sounding mildly pissed off.
“Get your ass home bitch, it’s getting late and I’m not in the mood for your drama bullshit.” Steve again.
“It’s almost midnight now, and you have your phone turned off. So help god woman if you are at your mothers moaning about how shit your life it I will fucking give you something to whine about. Don’t make me come looking for you.”
“Yikes, that sounds threatening.” I thought uneasily to myself. This fight was certainly opening up a whole can of worms.
The last message was from Simone again. “Hi it’s me again, you’ve dissapeared on me and I’m getting a little worried. Seriously, call me.”
I held my phone in my hand, trying to decide which to call first, Steve or Simone.
With a sigh, I dialled Steve.
“Hello.”
“Hey, it’s me.”
“Well well well. The little runaway finally calls.” He sneered. “When are you coming home?”
“That depends” I said slowly.
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” He demanded.
“Please don’t be like this Steve, this dosn’t have to get ugly. I just got scared, ok?”
He gave a disbelieving snort.
“I am not coming home until you apologize!” I said, my voice raising in spite of myself.
“For what exactly? You deserved what you got, staying out late, whoring around with your friends”
“I was not whoring around you bastard. And why can’t I have fun with my friends like you do? I never see you on Friday or Saturday nights.”
“What I do is none of your business.”
“Fine. If you are going to act like this then I won’t come home. At all.”
“Listen Val, i’m telling you to come home so that exactly what you are going to do. Believe me, if you try to run out on me you’ll be sorry.”
“You know what, I don’t think I have anything else to say to you.” I said in as calm a voice as I could muster and turned off the phone seething with anger.
“Cerdo!” I spat giving the phone a dirty look.
I flopped back on my bed miserably. “How had it come to this?” I wondered.
I thought back to when we had first started seeing each other, and when we moved into our first apartment. We had been young, in love and so full of hope for the future. We thought we would always be together, and right now I honestly couldn’t imagine my life without him. At the thought, my eyes filled with tears, silently running down my cheeks. I continued to think about our life together, and when I thought back to my pregnancy, how happy we had been before I lost my baby the waterworks started for real. I buried my face into my pillow, my body wracked with sobs. I cryed for a very long time, my sobs finally winding down to mere sniffles. When my breathing evened out again, I fell asleep, and slept for most of the afternoon. Crying is fucking exhausting.
When I woke up again I went downstairs hoping to see Kirk or Lani, I really needed to talk to someone.
I found them in the livingroom, watching an old horror movie curled up on the couch.
“Looking a little scary babes.” Kirk said when I walked in the room. I fingered my hair, it was sticking out all over the place, and I couldn’t imagine my skin looked any better after that cryfest. Scary indeed.
Lani elbowed him. “Hush!” “What happened?” She asked me in a concerned voice.
Seeing their faces filled with concern for me made my eyes fill up with tears again.
I sat down in the couch and swiped at my eyes angrily. “Shit.” I muttered.
“I just talked to Steve.”
“And?”
“Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.” I said and then recounted my conversation with him, but when I got to the part where Steve accused me of whoring around, my face flushed with guilt, an image of blonde hair, blue eyes and a devilish smile sprang to mind. Steve hadn’t been far from the mark.
“I can’t believe he’s acting like this!”
“You mean he’s changed?” Lani asked carefully.
I nodded mutely, my hands fiddling with my earrings.
“He’s drinking more, right?” Kirk asked. I nodded again.
“Well I think that he is probably an alcoholic, and that his personality is changing because of that, it’s getting worse.”
“He dosn’t drink that much!” I protested weakly.
“It dosn’t have to be for it to be a problem. Listen Val, he is truly dangerous. He shows no remorse at all for what he did. Based on that alone you should leave him.” Lani said, her low and soothing voice firm.
The doorbell sounded and Kirk went to get it, all three dogs running after him. Lani moved closer to me and squeezed my hand sympathetically.
“It’s just....not that easy, you know?” I said finally.
“I know sweetie.”
“He is my whole life....we met when I was 16. We were living together by the time I was 17. Everything i’ve ever done has been with him.” At the end of the sentance my voice broke and I started crying again.
Lani gave me a big hug, and then said “You are still you though. He can’t take that away, you just have to find yourself again.”
The door opened and Kirk walked in followed by Rob. He took one look at me and immediatly rushed to my side. I had to give the man credit, here I was, my hair literally standing on end, no makeup, skin blotchy from crying and I was wearing sweatpants the third day in a row. Scary didn’t do me justice, but he bravely seemed not to notice. He sat down and pulled me close to him, putting an arm around my shoulders. I rested my head on his shoulders and sighed. I don’t know what it was about Rob, but he filled me with a feeling of safety everytime I saw him.
“What happened?” He asked me gently.
“Él es un cerdo” I muttered.
“He’s a pig huh?” Rob laughed.
Kirk and Lani were looking at each other in surprise.
“You speak spanish?” Kirk asked.
“Let me introduce myself, my full name is Valerie Rosita Evangalista Perez, half cuban half american.”
“And here I thought you just spent to much time on the beach.” Kirk said laughing.
I gave a decidedly unladylike snort.
“So what are you going to do now?” Kirk asked me after he had told Rob most of what had happened.
“I guess....I’ll have to go home and get a few things.” I said finally. “And start looking for a place of my own.”
“There’s no rush you know, you can stay here as long as you want to.” Lani assured me.
“Thanks you guys, but I can’t stay here forever.”
“You let me know if there’s anything we can do.” Rob told me.
I nodded although I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do that. I felt indebted to them as it is.
We sat in a comfortable silence for a while, and then I disentangled myself from Rob and said “I really really need a bath you guys.”
“See, I told you. Scary.” Kirk said standing up himself. How about me and Rob get dinner in the meantime?”
Lani agreed and he and Rob started for the door.
As I walked away, I called to Kirk over my shoulder
“A bucket of KFC sounds great Kirk, do you mind?”
He shot me a genuinly pained look that made me giggle helplessly as I walked to my room. I was finally feeling a little better, although I dreaded going back to get my things.
I soaked in the huge tub for a while, enjoying being able to relax in the bubbles. I did have to get out unfortunatly, so I got an oversized met shirt from the closet and padded downstairs. “Man I need to get my clothes” I thought to myself as I followed the scent of food into the dining room. A dozen white cartons told me it was chinese food, and Rob, Kirk and Lani were getting out plates and things.
“I hope this isn’t all just rice and noodles.” I told Kirk as I sat down.
He gave me his best hurt look. “Hey, I got the noodles expecially for you.” Then he ruined the effect by laughing.
Dinner turned out to be great and they all did their best to take my mind off things by talking and making me laugh.
After we had thrown the cartons away and put the dished in the dishwasher, Kirk asked Lani to go and finish te movie they had been watching when I interupted them today. Lani agreed, and Kirk turned to me and asked
“How about you guys? Wanna join us?”
“Actually that movie looked really scary, I think I’m better off watching cable in my room.” I looked at Rob and added. “How about it surfer monkey, wanna see if there is a mexican soap opera on or something?”
“Sure, although they can be scary too you know, just in a different way.”
“Kirk, you and Lani go and watch the movie, we’ll be fine.”
“You’re sure?” Lani asked.
“Definatly.”
They headed to the livingroom, and Rob followed me upstairs, and Jerry walked after us as well, leaving his new found friends Hoku and Darla.
“You’re not really going to make me watch a mexican soap opera are you?” He asked me in a mock worried voice.
“Nah, I just wanted to give them some privacy, you know?”
“That was nice of you. So, surfer monkey?”
I couldn’t help but laugh at his wounded expression.
“In the best possible way of course.” I assured him with a sweet smile. He sat down on the bed that I had thankfully made up before I left the room, and I grabbed the remote and sat down next to him. Channel surfing, I came across a movie station, and Silence of the Lambs was next.
“We gotta watch this!” He said when he saw I was about to change the channel. I looked at him sideways and saw he wasn’t kidding.
“Uh-uh, no way. I freak out at the end.”
“So you’re a scaredy cat?”
“Oh yeah.”
He just laughed at me before he finally said. “What if I get us some chocolate?”
I thought about it for a while and then said “Deal. But you’re gotta protect me, right?”
“From what exactly?”
“From the serial killer and the cannibal!” I said in the most indignant tone I could muster.
Rob just walked out laughing. I had the sneaking suspicion he didn’t take me seriously. I stood up and turned off the lights, instead I turned on the small lamp on the nightstand, then I got a blanket to snuggle under and told Jerry to stay on the floor. I fluffed up the pillows so we could sit up against the headboard and just as I sat down, arranging the blanket Rob walking in with his arms full.
“I got Coke, herseys kisses and a shitload of popcorn.” He announced putting all the stuff on the nightstand.
“And here I thought the deal was just for chocolate.”
“Kirk was in the kitchen getting popcorn ready for him and Lani, so I grabbed some of that too. The coke is cause you get thirsty from the popcorn.”
“You think of everything.” I giggled. “But this is great, thanks.”
“So do you.” He said looking around.
“Well, you can’t watch tv with bright lights on, and the blanket is so we don’t get cold, and and pillows so we’re comfy.” I explained.
Rob sat next to me, and pulled the blanket around us both, then arranged the popcorn bowl between us. At first, we were very careful not to touch, sitting with a couple inches between us. But as the movie progressed, I huddled down and inadvertidly moved closer to Rob. By the second half of the movie I was leaning against him, and hiding my head against his large chest at the scary parts. At some point his arm went around my shoulders, and lying against him I was so totally comfortable I was louth to reach for my glass, since that involved moving. When the movie ended I roused myself up and shuddered slighty. That movie really did freak me out.
“I hope you know I’m not going to sleep at all tonight.” I said to Rob in an accusing tone.
“It is not that scary.” He protested trying not to laugh.
“Is so. Since I’m all freaked out now, you need to watch a chick flick with me.”
“That was not part of the deal, you wanted chocolate and protection, thats what you got.”
“You know you want to.” I said teasingly, while I channel surfed to find something else to watch. Aha! The first Bridget Jones had just started.
“Now this we have to watch.”
“Oh man, not her!” Rob said sighing in mock irritation.
Since he didn’t move, I decided on some subliminal level he did want to watch the movie, so I snuggled up to him again and we fell silent. But it was one thing to watch a thriller, then to watch a romantic movie, because all the talk of kissing and sex got my mind thinking about things I really really shouldn’t be thinking about. I became aware of Rob’s thick muscles, hard even in relaxation, and the way he smelled. There was no change in Rob’s behavior, so I could only hope that all this sexual tension was just in my mind. Lord knows it did love to fool me any chance it got.
Rob felt Val shift slighty against him, and it was all he could do to act like he didn’t notice. Having her lying with him like this was giving him ideas he was desperatly trying to ignore.
“If this goes on any longer I’m going to embarrass myself when I stand up.” He thought to himself, fighting to keep his body under control. He had made up his mind to not let her know how much he liked her until some time had passed, it was still so soon after she had left that jerk.
As I watched the movie, I felt myself growing sleepy despite the sexual tension humming in my body. Exhaustion was taking over and Rob made a excellent pillow. I was asleep before the movie ended, but I felt Rob move and tryed to hold on to him to keep him from going away.
“Shhh it’s ok gatito, i’m not going anywhere” Rob whispered against my ear, causing me to shiver as I felt his breathe on the sensitive skin on my neck.
Through my sleepy haze I was aware that Rob was laying me down properly on the bed, put a blanket over me then he lay down so we were back to chest and held me close to him. I fell asleep instantly, cocooned in Robs arms.
When I woke up, I opened my eyes and was looking at smooth dark skin, with a small scattering of chest hair.
“Oh god, I fell asleep with Rob!” I thought when my brain finally made the connection. My head was cradled in his armpit, our legs were entwined and Robs arms held me close to him. The blanket was tangled around us, and Jerry was lying on half of it.
“Sneaky dog, gets into the bed as soon as I’m asleep.” I grumpled to myself. I nudged the dog who was also sleeping soundly with my foot, trying to wake him up without waking Rob. The dog finally woke up and got the picture, jumping down on the floor. But, as I was trying to squirm out of Rob’s embrace, his arms tightened around me instead.
“This isn’t working.” I thought wearily to myself. I had hoped to get out of bed without waking Rob, but I think that was going out the window fast. His arms were holding me tight enough that I couldn’t wriggle from his grasp without waking him.
I decided to take my chances and sat up with enough force that his arms lost their grip. Sure enough, his eyes fluttered open. A few seconds passed, I could see him struggle to wake up. When he did and looked at me, he stiffened and sat up, rubbing his face.
“Morning.” I said weakly, I had no idea how to handle this.
“Morning Val.” Rob said, his voice a little husky from sleep. “that is the last time I watch a chick movie with you, they are so boring I fall asleep.” He said, attempting to tease me. But I could see he was uncomfortable, he hadn’t even cracked a smile.
“Bridget Jones is a modern day classic.” I informed him, trying to match his teasing tone. I stood up and self consiously pulled at the t shirt, trying to get it to cover more of my legs.
Rob also stood up, and got his shirt from where he had tossed the night before. He had slept in a skin tight white sleeveless shirt. I couldn’t help but notice his muscles rippling under his skin as he moved around. I gave myself a mental shake and pryed my eyes away from him.
“How about coffee?” He asked me, but instead of waiting for my answer, he turned and walked out of the room.
Rob walked quickly out of Val’s room, and went straight into the bathroom down the hall. Sitting on the edge of the bathtub, he put his head in his hands and groaned.
“Man I totally blew it. I got all weird on her. Dammit.” He said out loud to himself.
Much like any man, waking up with a female body in his arms had given him a morning hard on that could have broken glass. Rob sat there for a few minutes, willing it to go away. No luck, an image of Val as she had stood there, black hair tousled from sleep, her green eyes not quite focused yet and tugging at her shirt shyly wouldn’t leave his mind. A good 10 minutes later he had finally gotten his body under control and he ventured downstairs. Val was sitting there, in the same sweatpants, but another met shirt.
