"Mina?! Hey, it's Luca!" She held the phone to her ear as she dried herself with her towel.
"OMIGOD Lu!!!!!" Marina practically screamed into the phone, causing Luca to pull the receiver away from her ear. "When did you get in?" she asked hurriedly.
"Well, about an hour-" Marina interrupted her.
"Okay, listen to this! There's a show tonight! Down at the old Yacht Club, should be good - you in?!"
"Well, yeah I guess, but-" Marina interrupted her again.
"Sweet! Okay, it starts at 10, so i'll see you at 9:00?"
Luca looked at the clock. Didn't give her much time...oh what was she worried about, it's not like she was going to dress up or anything...no makeup, reasonable hair...yeah she had enough time.
"Yeah, sounds good." She finished her sentence before Marina could interrupt her again.
"Right on, I'll see you in 30! Ciao!" and Marina was gone.
"Good Lord," Luca said under her breath. "That girl needs to learn when to breathe!" She chuckled to herself, and started rifling through her suitcase for a suitable outfit.
**********************************
9:00, the doorbell rang. "I got it!" Luca yelled, to no one in particular, seeing how her mom and dad had gone out for dinner with her uncle and aunt, and her brother was downstairs playing who knows what on his Playstation. She opened the door to see her best friend Marina smiling at her.
"Luca!" she squealed, and pulled open the screen door to jump on Luca and squish her into a bear hug.
"Oh Mina, I missed you!" she said into her friends shoulder, as the two of them hopped around the entryway. All of a sudden Luca looked up to be greeted by the pale visage of a person she had never seen before. She started, and pushed Marina off of her, a little embarassed, and cleared her throat. "Uh, Mina, who's..." she trailed off, nodding in the direction of their silent guest.
"Huh?" Marina looked around confused, and then laughed as she realized what Luca was talking about. "Oh, shit, I forgot Luca! This is my good friend, Gerard. Luca Stevenson, Gerard Way. Gerard Way, Luca Stevenson."
"Hi," Gerard said in a friendly voice, "Nice to meet you, Luca." he extended his right hand to her, a small, awkward smile coming to his pale lips and eyes. She immediately regretted the no make-up decision.
"Yes, you too" Luca replied, taking his hand gingerly and shaking it a little before letting it drop back down. She took in his features; a little taller than she; shoulder length black hair that probably hadn't been washed in at least 3 days; faded, torn black leather jacket that appeared to be a little too short for his long torso; and a startlingly pale face that held a pair of equally startling eyes. She only wished she could tell what colour in the darkness of the front porch...
She hadn't realized she'd been staring until she felt Marina punch her in the arm. Hard.
"Shit! What the fuck?!" she cried out as she rubbed her arm.
"I was trying to tell you that we should get going! Are you ready? It's almost 10 for fuck's sake!" Marina started towards the car.
Luca looked at her watch. 9:09. Yeah, almost 10. She shook her head, grabbed her purse from the closet and made sure to lock the door on the way out.
When she turned around, she saw that Gerard had hung back, waiting for her. She could feel the intensity of his glare even from this distance. She felt her ears turn red as she thought of how she had stared at him. She wondered how long she had...
Marina skipped through the slush all the way back to her car, pulling open the passenger door, and getting inside. "This your ride?" Luca asked skeptically, pointing to the apparently black Dodge Omni that was parked by the sidewalk, thankful that it was dark out so he couldn't see the colour of her face.
He flashed her a proud smile. "Yes, ma'am, bought and paid for with my own money." She couldn't help but smile back, his grin brought such an inoccent and boyish charm to his face.
"Please tell me it has heat at least!" She joked.
"This car? It's got TWO settings, and a/c, if you jiggle the knob just right!" He laughed as she almost slipped in the slush, grabbing her arm to keep her from falling. She thanked him and ducked into the back seat. Her face turned an even deeper crimson when she suddenly realized that all the while she had stared at him, he had been staring right back.
What, do I think he's cute?! Oh my God, I do! she lamented to herself. Do I? He must think I'm an idiot, staring at him like that. But it's not like I'm the first person to ever check someone out...Oh my GOD, I WAS checking him out!She groaned to herself in the back seat.
"Did you say something Luca?" Marina asked, not turning to her.
"Uh, n-no, um, nothing," she stammered. She looked in the rearview mirror and was met again by his intense gaze, a small hint of amusement in his eyes. Shit! Does he know I was checking him out! Dammit! What am I doing?
Luca busied herself with straightening her seatbelt, managing to pass the time it took to get to the Yacht Club in silence. She practically leaped from the car when they reached their destination. Making sure Marina and Gerard were in tow, she made her way to the entrance of the hall, stopping to wait by the doors. Marina and Gerard were speaking lowly, and Marina gave Luca a sly look as she pushed past her, and into the building.
"Let's go in!" she grinned mischeviously, and pushed through the doors, leaving Gerard and Luca outside. Gerard once again pushed the door open and held it for her. She ducked under his arm and walked in.
