Chapter 2
Johnny didn’t really know what he had expected, but he was fairly certain he hadn’t expected to be blatantly ignored. After so many years of wanting to be ignored or at least wanting his fame to be ignored, it was rather ironic (and somewhat annoying) that someone would choose now to do so. Johnny, however, was in no mood to appreciate the irony of the situation. After knocking on the door again, he heard movement in the house, but instead of coming to answer him, the person inside merely switched off the living room lights, as if they were trying to pretend there was no one home.
Johnny let out a disbelieving snort of laughter. What. The. Hell? He hoped this chick’s life never depended on hiding from anyone; since her methods seemed to be far from logical. And it was a chick; he’d decided… there was just something about the place that screamed of a woman’s touch; maybe it was the excessive flowers or the beaten up little Fiat in the drive. Or maybe it was just the way she had for some reason deemed him unworthy of answering the door to. He could understand that, a young female, (yeah, he’d also decided she had to be relatively young, surely no more than 30) all alone in the middle of nowhere, in a large empty house (so what if the middle of nowhere was probably a couple of miles from town and the house looked as if it had about 4 rooms, that wasn’t the point, damn it). Anyway, in that (grossly exaggerated situation) it was quite reasonable for her to not want to open up her home to any random strangers that happened to wander over. He knocked again fruitlessly and then finally resorted to opening the letterbox and crouching down to shout through it.
“Um, hi, I’m sorry to bother you but, uh I ran out of gas about 30 minutes, uh back that way.” He waved his arm vaguely and then wondered why since she probably couldn’t even see him.
“I saw you turn out the lights, so I know you’re home, uh I don’t want to cause any trouble, I’d just like to use the phone, if you have one?” His words were met with total silence.
“…. Uh… Please?”
Further silence.
“I’m not a murderer, uh I mean I’m an actor, maybe you’ve seen me in something?” He wanted to kick himself for playing the Actor Card, but he was getting pretty desperate …and hell, maybe she had seen him in something.
Yet more silence.
He decided to go for the whimsical begging approach. “Look lady… or… guy… I’m really stuck here; please let me use your telephone. I wouldn’t ask, but I haven’t seen any other cars come down here and I don’t know how far it is into town and y’know I don’t want to spend the night out here…all alone… in the dark. And what if I get eaten by a bear… do you really want that on your conscience?”
He thought he heard a smothered giggle from inside at that and soon realised that someone was approaching the door. Johnny listened as the key turned in the lock and then painted his best smile on his face to cover his slight exasperation before she could see it.
The door opened a just a few inches – she’d obviously put the chain on – and she peered out at him. His first impressions were that she seemed quite attractive, but also painfully shy. She had beautiful hair, but she wore it in her face, head lowered, so he could barely make out her features.
He had been about to say, “about fucking time”, but bit his words back at the last second. She looked like the last person who would appreciate being talked to in such a way. It had probably taken her all her courage just to open the damned door. He looked at her, unsure of how to proceed. After a few seconds of pondering this, he remembered that he did in fact want to use the phone and guessed that this would be a good place to start.
“Sorry to disturb you, but the phone… I uh want to use it…
If you don’t mind.” He added hurriedly.
She gave him a slight nod and he thought he heard a whispered ‘sure’, but he couldn’t be certain. His major thought as she opened the door wider for him to enter was ‘what the fuck’, but he supposed she was really none of his business and he should just use the phone and get out. He couldn’t help being intrigued by her though, most women he knew threw themselves at him and didn’t stop talking – about themselves - until he just wanted to strangle them for a moments peace and quiet. However, it seemed this woman was right at the other end of the spectrum and maybe that wouldn’t be so fantastic either. She was attractive though, she gestured him to follow her through into the living room and as he did so, he couldn’t help but notice that she had a great ass. The second she turned around, he snapped his eyes up guiltily, hoping she hadn’t seen his look and wondering if she was perhaps mentally unstable and liable to snap.
Such thoughts drained away the next moment when she raised her head slightly and smiled at him:
“Umm the phone, it’s here, don’t worry about the cost of the call, and umm I’m sorry I didn’t answer the door sooner, I-I’m not used to company.” Her words seemed to come out in a rush and she became flustered as she spoke. Johnny smiled warmly at her and she seemed to be put a little at ease by it.
“Thanks, and listen, what’s your name, unless you want me to continue calling you ‘lady’ – uh sorry about that by the way.”
There was a moment’s pause, as if she was trying to work up the courage to continue with the conversation
“It’s Angela”. Again she flushed as she spoke, but slightly less so this time, Johnny thought.
“I’m Johnny.”
She giggled nervously, brushing her hair out of her eyes, and attempting to meet his gaze, although she appeared to find it difficult to do:
“Yeah, I know. I think I might’ve seen you in something.” And she smiled.
For a second he couldn’t believe she had made a joke, he didn’t even know why he couldn’t believe it. She just hadn’t seemed like the playful type. Of course he had only the three minutes he had known her, as a basis for that assumption, but up until about 30 seconds ago that had seemed like enough… which of course was ridiculous in itself. This time he outright grinned at her and then, worrying that she might think he was a little weird, resorted back to a smile.
He picked up the phone, still smiling, thinking to himself that she might just be the most fantastic person he’d met in a long time - too long. He didn’t know why.
It was just a feeling.
