Chapter One
Sligo- Early 2003
“Make up your fuckin’ mind, Kino.” Mark rolled his eyes as he hit Kian over the head with his menu. “I’m gonna starve waitin’ for ya to decide. It’s just breakfast.”
“Kian, honey does it really take this long to choose what to eat?” Jodi looked over at her boyfriend as she rolled her eyes.
“Hang on, I’ve almost decided.” Kian argued as his azure eyes scanned the menu one last time.
“Oh hell we’ll be here forever.” Shane rolled his eyes. Then he saw a waitress approach and signaled her over.
“What time are we supposed to meet Louis?” Mark asked as he took a drink of his water.
“In an hour.” Kian murmured as he gazed over the menu. “So much for the week off.” He grumbled. “Bryan and Nicky are comin’ today too. They just got into town.” He sighed.
“It’s not that bad, Kino. We get a few days rest.” Shane pointed out. “Better than we’ve had in the past.”
A waitress came over and gave the crowd at the table a friendly smile. “How are you guys doing this morning?” Her voice was soft and gentle.
“Just fine, love and yourself?” Mark grinned up at her, his interest immediately peaked.
“I’m doing pretty good. Have you decided what you want?” The waitress asked as she readied herself to take their order.
“Well three of us have.” Shane replied dryly as he gave Kian a dirty look.
Mark’s head popped up. “That accent of yours isn’t from around here.” He flashed her a grin as he gave her his full attention.
The waitress grinned. “My, you are smart. That’s because I’m not from around here, originally.”
“Where are ya from?” Mark turned on his charm as he began to flirt with the waitress.
“America.” The waitress pulled her pencil out from behind her ear.
Kian’s head snapped up as he gave a quick look at the waitress. “America? I knew someone from America, a long time ago.”
The waitress laughed lightly. “Well there are millions of us hanging around the globe. You’re bound to run into one American sometime in your life.”
Kian chuckled as he nodded. “Yea, I guess there are.” He looked back down at the menu.
“What are ya doin’ here in Sligo?” Mark leaned forward as he smiled at the waitress.
“I just moved back here to be with my family.” The waitress told him. “My aren’t you the curious one? I bet all the girls love you.” She winked at Mark.
“You have no idea.” Shane rolled his eyes as Mark shot him a glare.
“We are ready to order.” Jodi interrupted as she gave the waitress a forced smile.
“So what can I get you guys?” The waitress looked down, ready to take their order, getting the hint. Not everyone at the table was in a talkative mood this morning.
Mark and Shane ordered their food as the waitress scribbled it down on a pad. Then she looked at Jodi. “What can I get for you?” She put on her own best fake smile.
“I’ll just take some toast and some juice.” Jodi gave the waitress an annoyed look as she handed her the menu.
When it was Kian’s turn he opened his mouth to order but something distracted him. As the waitress leaned over to take Shane and Mark’s menus, the necklace she was wearing slipped out from her shirt and dangled in the air. Kian’s eyes narrowed as he saw the images that graced the front and back of the medallion that hung from the chain. The Virgin Mother and an angel stared back at him. “Fuckin’ Hell!” He gasped in awe.
“What is it Kian?” Jodi looked worried as she put a hand on his shoulder.
Kian boldly reached out and tenderly took the medallion in his hands as he began to study it. He recognized it instantly. No, it couldn’t be. He ran his thumb over the image of the Virgin Mother and pulled on the chain a bit too hard. The waitress jerked back a bit. “Excuse me, but do you mind taking your hands off of that. It’s very delicate.” There was an edge to her voice.
Kian’s eyes darted up, looking at the waitress as if seeing her for the first time. She had long soft honey colored waves that were pulled back into a ponytail with a few tendrils framing her face. She had high cheekbones and full lips. But it was her eyes that Kian was most interested in. He sucked in his breath as he stared into the deepest green eyes he had ever seen. There was only one person who had eyes like that. “Emmy?” He managed to choke out as his eyes opened wide, as if not believing what stood in front of him. Staring at the woman in front of him, Kian prayed to God that he wasn’t wrong about this.
Hearing her name on this stranger’s lips, Emmy stood up straight and stared at the man in front of her. Her face went pale as she stared at the man sitting in front of her. “How do you-“ She stared at him and then narrowed her eyes. All of a sudden her eyes went wide as her jaw dropped. “Kian?” Her voice barely came out a whisper. She shook her head back and forth. “No, it can’t be!” She took a step back as her eyes stared straight ahead at the man in front of her.
Kian immediately stood up and without warning reached out and grabbed the woman to him. He wrapped his powerful arms around her, hugging her tightly. “Emmy tell me it’s ya!” He crushed her to his hard chest as he buried his head between her neck and shoulder.
Hearing that same voice, only a bit deeper with age, Emmy’s legs almost gave out on her. Yet Kian was right there as always to hold her up. “Kian Egan?” She pulled back to stare into the bluest eyes she had ever seen. Her face lit up in shock as she stared at him.
He hugged her tighter, lifting her off of her feet as he laughed. “It IS me Emmy!” He pulled back and couldn’t stop smiling at her, despite the unshed tears in his eyes.
Emmy felt as if she were staring at a ghost. This was her Kian, only with some small changes. The last time she saw him he still had his dark hair. Now his hair was blonde and much shorter as it just dusted across his brow. No longer was he the skinny boy he had been. He was very much a man now. Wearing a pair of faded jeans, they hung around his waist as they fit his masculine body. The dark blue cotton of an old baseball T-shirt he was wearing clung to a broad muscular chest and powerful biceps. But when he gave her that full smile, she knew right there and then it was her Kian.
Her thumb brushed away the tears in the corners of his eyes. “I thought boys didn’t cry?” She gave him a warm smile as she tried to laugh off the tears starting to form in her own eyes.
“You’re the only one who could ever make me cry, Emmy.” Kian whispered as he lowered his head until their foreheads touched. “After all this is the second time. I hope this isn’t becoming a habit, love?”
She lunged forward and hugged him tightly. “Kian I thought I would never see you again.” There was so much emotion in her voice, she had to hold back or she surely would burst into tears.
“I know Little One. I can’t believe I found ya.” Kian caressed her face as he smiled from ear to ear. He was totally oblivious to the fact they were standing in the middle of a crowded pub. All he cared about was that Emmy was in front of him after all these years.
Instantly Mark cleared his throat as he looked at Kian and nodded his head towards Jodi. “Care to introduce us Kian? Or are ya plannin’ to keep her all to yourself?” Mark winked at Emmy.
Kian turned towards the table and laughed nervously. He wrapped his arm around Emmy’s waist protectively as he turned towards his mates. “I’m so sorry, lads. You’ll never believe who this is.” He pulled Emmy closer to him.
“Probably not since ya haven’t told us yet.” Shane smirked as Mark laughed aloud.
“I still can’t believe it’s you.” Kian smiled at Emmy as he kissed her cheek, still caught up in the shock of the situation.
“Kian!” Jodi’s voice carried a note of warning as she glared up at her boyfriend.
“Sorry, I really am. I’m shakin’ here.” Kian took a deep ragged breath. He smiled over at Emmy as she ran her hand up and down his back soothingly. “This is one of me best mates in the whole world. Shane, remember Emmy McAllistair?”
Shane stared at Emmy as realization dawned on him. His jaw dropped as his brown eyes lit up. “No fuckin’ way! Really? Little Emmy?” He looked her up and down, shock flooding his face.
Mark’s head whipped up to look at her. “Emmy? As in Kian’s Emmy?”
“Yea, that very one.” Kian grinned from ear to ear. Turning to face Emmy, he gave her another tight hug. “Me guardian angel has returned.” He buried his head in the crook of her neck. “After all these years, you’re back.”
“Well any friend of Kian’s is a friend of mine.” Jodi interrupted with a slight sneer to her voice. “I’m Jodi, his girlfriend.” Jodi gave Emmy a tight smile as she put the emphasis on the word girlfriend.
Emmy pulled back and looked down at Jodi and then back at Kian. Taking a step back she ran a hand through her hair nervously. “Girlfriend? God you must think Kian and I are terrible. I’m so sorry for reacting like this. I just never expected to see Kian.” She began apologizing.
“There is nothing for ya to be sorry about, Little One.” Kian smiled down at her. He turned to Jodi and spoke. “Jodi ya don’t know what a shock this is for me. The last time I saw Emmy here is when she was a scrawny twelve year old.”
“Hey! Scrawny?” Emmy playfully hit Kian on the shoulder as he laughed. “Funny I remember a fourteen year old kid who was scared of a certain nanny.”
“Broomhilda was scary.” Kian retorted in an effort to defend himself.
“Remember the time we blasted Metallica in the limo on the way home from Hazelwoods?” Emmy laughed. “She came out screaming threatening to send me away to boarding school in Switzerland if I didn’t stop that noise.”
“I thought she was gonna kill us.” Kian wiped as his eyes as he laughed.
“Kian we don’t have much time. You and the boys here have that meeting with Louis at 10 a.m. You know how upset he gets when you’re late.” Jodi stood and put her hand possessively on Kian’s arm.
Quickly checking his watch, Kian frowned. “Damn it.” He looked back up at Emmy and smiled. “Where are ya stayin’ at? Can you meet me later so we can talk?”
Emmy nodded slowly. “I get done working here around three. Where do you live now?” She threw up her hands in the air and laughed nervously. “I don’t know anything about you anymore.”
“You mean ya don’t know who he is?” Mark asked with a look of shock on his face as he quickly looked to Shane and then Kian.
Emmy looked down at Mark. “No, should I?” Then she looked back up at Kian. “Is there something I should know about you Mr. Egan?”
“You mean ya don’t know what Kian does now?” Shane couldn’t help but smiling. “I would’ve thought with ya livin’ in Sligo, ya would have found out by now. Especially here.”
“Why do I get the feeling I’m missing something here?” Emmy looked around at all of them. “I’ve only been in Sligo for two days. The only places I’ve really gone is here and back to Gran’s.” Then she looked at Kian and sighed. “Good God what have you done now, Kian Egan?”
Kian smiled as he grabbed a napkin and the pencil out of Emmy’s hand. He scribbled down something on the napkin and pressed it into her hand. “That’s me mobile number. Call me later. Meet me around four at our special place. You remember it don’t ya?”
Looking into his eyes, Emmy felt her heart start to melt. She nodded as she stuffed the napkin in her pocket. “Of course I do. It was the first place I went when I came home. I had to see it again.”
Jodi glared at Kian behind his back. What the hell was he doing flirting with this woman when she was his girlfriend? Oh there would be hell to pay when she got him alone. “I thought we were going to your parents house around four?” She reminded him, none too gently.
Kian winced. “I forgot about that. Well I can call my mum and make it for later in the night.” He turned to smile at Jodi.
Mark looked over at Shane and hid his smirk. Jodi wasn’t happy in the least bit. He felt a bit bad for his mate for Kian would be in deep trouble when they got out of here. Shane turned his head towards the window to hide the laughter that was bubbling out.
Hearing her name being called, Emmy turned her head. “I need to get to work, Kian. I’ll see you later.” She quickly hugged him as she whispered in his ear. “I missed you Kian.”
Hugging her back, Kian whispered back. “I missed ya too Little One. Remember our place, 4 p.m.” He reluctantly let her go. As he watched her get back to work, Kian felt a shiver of excitement run up his spine and cause the hairs on the back of his neck to rise. His Little One was back in Sligo. His guardian angel returned.

“Should I pretend to know why you’re angry with me?” Kian looked over at Jodi as he drove. “Ya haven’t said much since breakfast.” He sighed as he gripped the steering wheel.
Turning her head, Jodi glared at him. “Why shouldn’t I be angry? To see my boyfriend hugging on some strange woman and then refusing to take his arms off her tends to put me in a bad mood.” She replied sarcastically.
Kian sighed again as he shook his head. “Jodi I explained to ya-“
“I know you’ve said a million times since we left the pub. She was your childhood friend that you thought you lost.” Jodi cut him off as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“You don’t understand. Emmy and I were…are close. I was there the day her mum died. I was the only one to hold her and tell her it was gonna be ok.” Kian looked over at his girlfriend. “I was the only one she ever had.”
Laying her head on his arm, Jodi sighed. “I’m sorry Kian. I just have this bad feeling and I feel like I’m losing touch with you. I mean I hardly ever see you as it is, and now you are going to start another tour.”
Wrapping an arm around Jodi’s shoulders, Kian bent his head and kissed her softly. “Nothin’ is gonna happen, love. You’re not gonna lose me. Emmy and me are just friends. I’m still in shock that’s all. You just worry too much, Jodi.”
Jodi nodded mutely as she turned to look out of the window. Yet there was something more to their friendship that Kian was letting on. She would bet on it. She had never seen Kian so animated or so excited to see someone. Even after a long tour he never was that excited to see her. A deep seeded dislike for Kian’s newest acquaintance began to form.
“Back to not talkin’ to me are we?” Kian teased as he took her hand.
“I’m just thinking.” Jodi gave him a tight smile.
“Jodi, this is as much of a surprise to me as it is to you.” Kian stared ahead of him as he drove. Why couldn’t Jodi understand? Finding Emmy was like a dream come true.
“I know Kian.” Jodi looked out the window. “It just seems that you were awfully excited to see her, that’s all. Then there was the fact you arranged to meet her at your so-called special place. I mean come on, you had your hands all over her.” She answered bitterly.
“I did not! Emmy and I aren’t like that!” Kian raised his voice. “It’s been nine years since I’ve seen her. I never thought I’d see her again.” Kian didn’t like the fact he seemed to be defending himself with every word. “It was very hard to say goodbye back then.”
“Let’s just forget about it. I don’t want to fight.” Jodi sighed as she patted his thigh.
But Kian didn’t want to forget about it. The image of a grown up Emmy ran through his mind. All he could see was her emerald green eyes and the way they looked at him. This wasn’t the same Emmy he had last seen nine years ago. A lot of things had changed, including him.
Kian smiled to himself as he thought of how Emmy was clueless to the fact of his career. All she remembered was the boy from years ago. Sure she had known he was in a rock bands back before Westlife. She even came to the musicals he had been in. Yet even he didn’t know his life would turn out like this. He frowned suddenly as he thought of what she would think when she found out.
“Kian we are here.” Jodi pointed out to the window indicating his parents’ house. “Are you sure you don’t mind that I don’t stick around for your meeting with Louis?”
Kian snapped to attention as he turned and gave Jodi a kiss on her forehead. “Not at all. I need to do some things after the meetin’ anyway.”
Jodi stared at him and pursed her lips. “Remember we are going to have dinner here later. Don’t be late.” She opened the door to get out.
“I won’t. I promise.” Kian gave her a quick wave as she shut the door.
Jodi watched as he drove off. She had a very bad feeling about this.

Emmy walked around the big oak tree, staring at it. It seemed that with all the things that changed over the years, some things stayed the same. The big oak was tall as ever and no matter how she much she grew up, it would always be her and Kian’s tree. Squatting down Emmy ran her fingers over the worn bark as a slow lazy smile crossed her lips. Right there almost as if like exactly how she left it, was the initials, KE and EM.
“Did ya think they would disappear?”
Whipping around, Emmy stood and came face to face with Kian. She nearly stumbled into him as Kian’s hands came around her upper arms in an effort to steady her. As she looked up into his sparkling blue eyes, she could see the warmth that she always found comfort in. “I was half afraid they would, yes.” She admitted.
“They are still there, Emmy. Just like me, I’m still here.” Kian’s voice was soft. “I’ve been here waitin’ for you. It’s been a long time, love. Too long.”
“I missed you so much Kian.” Emmy slid her arms around his sides to hug him.
Hugging her tight, Kian’s hand came up to cup the back of her head as he held it to his chest. Even though he wasn’t the tallest man in the world, it seemed that Emmy turned out to be a petite woman. Her head fit right under his chin as he held her. Even with Sligo in spring’s grasp, Kian felt her shivering against him despite the warm wind. “Are ya cold?” He moved his hands up and down her arms, trying to offer warmth.
Smiling as she looked up, Emmy shook her head. “No. I still feel like I’m in a dream. I can’t stop shaking.”
Kian grinned from ear to ear. “I know how ya feel. When I saw you this mornin’ I wanted to pinch meself.” He reached up to caress her cheek. “Is it really you, Little One?”
“I came home, Kian.” Emmy replied simply.
Staring at her, Kian couldn’t hold back the question that had been plaguing him all day. “Why? After nine years, why now Emmy?” He tried to keep his voice even, but a tiny hint of anger snuck in anyway.
Emmy knew it was coming and she tried her best to answer him with an answer he would be satisfied with. “My father remarried. I was attending the University of New York and I became bored. Besides Gran is not doing so well. Most of all I missed Sligo…and you Kian.”
Hearing that come from her lips, Kian couldn’t resist hugging her again. “God look at ya! Ya went and grew up on me.” He ruffled her hair as he laughed. “But it looks like ya will always be me Little One.” He pointed out her small stature. Even now Emmy didn’t reach past his mid chest. He was guessing that at her best she was around 5’2”.
“What about you? Especially this blonde hair!” Emmy laughed as she reached up to run her fingers through his light locks. “Filled out a bit too.” She gently squeezed his biceps. “You turned out to be quite good looking there, Mr. Egan.” She teased him. “Not to mention that accent of yours.” If there was one thing that Emma truly loved about Kian it was his voice. He had a thick Irish brogue that she could listen to for hours.
“Why thank you Miss McAllistair. I do say ya turned out to be one beautiful lass. Even with that American accent ya have goin’ on.” Kian smiled. “I think I’m gonna have my hands full with all the lads that will wanna date you.”
“I wouldn’t worry about that.” Emmy nudged him with her shoulder. “Dating is the last thing on my mind.”
“It can’t be because you’re not beautiful enough.” Kian caressed her face. “You turned out to be quite a surprise.”
It was then that Emmy spotted the scar on his right cheek. Reaching up she brushed her thumb over the scar tenderly. “Is this from-“
“The first time we met?” Kian finished for her. He nodded slowly. “Yea, that’s from me bike back then. It seems that I’ll always have a reminder of ya Emmy.”
“I always had a reminder of you too.” Emmy pulled out the medallion from where it lay tucked between her breasts.
“I can’t believe ya kept it.” Kian reached out and took it in his palm.
“I never took it off. You don’t know how many times thinking of you helped me.” Emmy’s voice was soft as she gazed up at Kian.
Kian couldn’t stop the smile that nearly split his face. “So tell me more. Do ya work at the pub all day? Is your grandmum still in that cottage out on Valley Road?” Kian pressed her for answers.
“I just started at the pub. Grandma got me the job and yes she still lives there. My Uncle Sean and his family live with us. I never knew I had so many cousins.” Emmy laughed.
Kian’s eyes lit up. “Speakin’ of cousins, do you remember me cousin, Gillian? She’s engaged to Shane. They’ll be married later this year.”
Emmy’s eyes widened as she began to giggle. “Gilly is with Shane? Wow things have changed. How is your family? I miss those cookies your mum and Grandma Rose used to make.” When she saw the light go out of Kian’s eyes, she put a hand on his arm. “Kian what’s wrong?”
Kian swallowed hard as he looked down for a second. Taking a deep breath he looked up, sadness covering his face. “Grandma Rose passed away awhile back.”
Emmy’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh Kian no…”
Enveloping her in his strong arms, Kian rubbed her nose with his. “Remember what I told ya when your mum became an angel? It was the same with Grandmum Rose, Little One.”
“You and your family helped me through some hard times while I lived here.” Emmy mused. “They treated me like I was part of the family.”
“Ya are part of the family, Emmy.” Kian told her as he ruffled her hair. Then his eyes lit up as he began to grin. “Why don’t ya come to dinner tonight? Mum and Dad would love it. They won’t believe that you have come home.”
“Kian I don’t know.” Emmy frowned. “I think your girlfriend was looking forward to spending tonight with you. I don’t want to intrude.”
“Jodi won’t mind. She understands about us. I told her all about ya.” Kian rattled on.
But Emmy wasn’t so sure. She had seen the looks that Jodi had given her earlier. Those weren’t the looks of an understanding girlfriend. Those were the looks of a woman that felt very threatened. The last thing she wanted to do was come between Kian and his girlfriend. “Maybe some other time.”
“But I’m goin’ away soon and won’t be back for awhile.” Kian blurted out.
“You’re leaving?” Emmy’s face fell. “Where are you going?”
“It’s for my job. It’s just a…business trip.” Kian inwardly winced, knowing exactly how lame that sounded.
“What exactly do you do?” Emmy put her hands on her hips. “It’s nothing illegal is it?”
Luckily Kian was saved by the bell…the ringer from his mobile phone. When his phone started ringing, he breathed a sigh of relief. Flipping open his phone he winked at Emmy. “Hello?”
Watching Kian talk on the phone, Emmy knew that something was amiss. He was keeping something from her. Even without words, she could tell that he was avoiding her questions.
“Oh hey Mum. Yea sure I’ll be there on time.” Kian’s eyes twinkled as he smiled at Emmy. “Mum do me a favor. Set an extra plate for the table. I’m bringin’ a special guest home.”
Emmy shook her head, no, but Kian wouldn’t listen. “Kian! Kian, no.” She hissed.
“No Mum, someone besides Jodi.” Kian spoke into the phone. “Trust me Mum, you will love this.”
Turning her back to him, Emmy sighed. It wasn’t as if she didn’t want to see the Egans. It wasn’t it at all. She couldn’t wait to see Patricia and Kevin Egan, Kian’s parents. The only obstacle would be Jodi. Emmy could sense jealousy when she spotted it. Then she felt two arms wrap around her waist as Kian whispered into her ear. “Are ya mad at me?”
“Maybe.” Emmy grumbled.
“Come on Emmy, why?” Kian whined in her ear. “I thought ya would love seein’ me family.”
Turning in his arms, Emmy looked up at him. “I told you Kian. I don’t think it’s fair to Jodi to thrust me back in your life without some sort of explanation.”
“I told Jodi what was goin’ on.” Kian protested. Then he hugged her again. “If ya think I’m letttin’ me best friend walk out of me life again, think again. It’s been nine years Emmy. Nine long years.” There was raw pain in his voice as his bright blue eyes filled with an angry fire.
Emmy looked up into Kian’s soft blue eyes and swore. “Damn you Egan. I can never say no to you.”
Kian suddenly burst into a huge ear to ear smile. “Ya never could. Dinner is at 7, do ya need a ride?”
“Can you pick me up at Gran’s?” Emmy asked in defeat.
“Absolutely. In fact I’ll drive ya home now so ya can get ready.” Kian took her hand and began to lead her to where his car was parked.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this.” Emmy grumbled.
“Hey if I can talk ya into divin’ into the icy water of the pond in April, I can talk ya into anythin’.” Kian smirked.
Emmy lightly hit him on the arm. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten about that. I was sick for two weeks.”
“I know. I felt bad for ya. That was the two longest weeks of me life, not seein’ ya.” Kian squeezed her hand. “This one is mine.”
When Emmy saw the black BMW that sat in the parking lot, she turned her head to look at Kian. “You promise me that you have a legal job?”
Kian chuckled as he unlocked the car with the switch on his keychain. “I swear to ya. You Americans.” He shook his head. “You’ve been watchin’ too many movies, Emmy. What do ya think I am, some Irish gangster?” He laughed as the video to World of Our Own came to mind.
“When are you going to tell me what you do?” Emmy’s eyes narrowed to look at him. “You are going to tell me, aren’t you?”
“Maybe.” Kian smirked. “Or maybe I’ll make ya figure it out for yourself.” He came around and opened up her door for her. “I think I would love to see ya guess.”
Smiling at him, Emmy got in the car. “Lord I missed you Kian.”
Closing the door, Kian walked to his side of the car and got in. Leaning over he kissed Emmy’s cheek. “I missed ya too. Now I’m gonna take ya home so ya can get pretty for tonight.”
“I don’t have to dress up do I?” Emmy bit her lower lip.
“Not for my family. It’s just like ya remembered Little One. Just be yourself.” Kian started the car.
Be myself, Emmy thought to herself. That was easier said than done nowadays. Taking a deep breath she would make tonight work. All that mattered was that she was finally home and Kian was back in her life.
(For all those die hard Westlife fans out there, you will notice that I'm not making Mark gay in this story. I personally have no problems for Mark being gay, as I love the man anyway. I love he fact he is finally able to be himself. He's one of the most talented singers I know. However, it just fits better for the storyline to have him straight. I apologize in advance if I anger people because of this)
