Tallie felt quite pleased with herself, having found the fire exit so quickly. She sat sprawled out across the top step, soaking up the rays that glared down on her. For a first day this was going pretty well, lighting her cigarette she absentmindedly fumbled in the depths of the bag for her sunglasses. She needed a moment to compose herself before she started and the first cigarette of the day was the ideal way to begin. Her mind wandered onto what she could wear that evening, hoping that she could get this job over and done with by six. That would give her enough time to have a shower and get over to Jamie’s house, the outfit she had planned for tonight was going to blow him away and she knew how it would get to him.
“You managed to escape Sam then?”
Tallie jumped and looked up to see someone standing in the doorway. Raising her glasses she realised it was the dark haired guy from earlier.
“Um yeah, how long you been standing there?”
“Not long, why what were you doing?” He smiled down at her.
“Nothing...I just don’t like strange men watching me when I don’t know about it!” She scowled back at him.
“You mind if I join you?” He asked, sitting down beside her. Tallie shrugged, not really caring either way.
“I guess I’m not gonna get a thankyou for getting you past that security guy?” He added, lighting up.
“I never asked for your help.” Tallie snapped.
“Ok then, I’ll go back and tell him you’re a mad psycho fan that faked her way in shall I?” He started, getting up.
“No...no,” She grabbed at his arm to prevent him leaving. Billie smiled to himself, he had no intention of walking away and had predicted her reaction to his threat. Her face had softened slightly, losing the angry pout that had made her look like a stroppy teenager. The way she nervously swept a loose strand of dark hair back behind her ear made him think that maybe she wasn’t as sure of herself as she would like him to think. Right now she seemed lost for words, either that or she was giving him the silent treatment.
“Sorry,” Tallie muttered under her breath eventually, looking out over the car park and avoiding eye contact. “I’m having a bad day, which has carried over from a bad night.”
Billie opened his mouth to ask what had happened to make it so bad but then decided against it. The girl didn’t look as if she was going to elaborate on anything, instead she laid back against the step in the same position she had been in earlier when he had been watching her from the doorway. The zip on the front of her shirt was pulled down far enough for the black lace edge of her bra to be seen underneath. As her chest rose and fell with each breath, a little more of the fabric showed through.
“So do I get to know your name yet?” He asked, his gaze not moving from her cleavage.
“Not till you tell me yours.” She reached out for her bag and began rooting around at the bottom, searching for something. Dammit, she thought pulling herself upright, why was this stupid bag so good at hiding stuff. It was like every time she needed something it turned into Mary poppins bag, there had to be more zips and pockets inside the damn thing than when she first bought it. Eventually her fingers found the item she had been searching for and pulled out a small packet of spaghetti gum and shoved a handful in her mouth.
“Go on then...” She continued,
“Billie Joe, and you are?”
“Tallie,” she replied holding out the packet. “You want some?”
“No thanks, is that short for something or is that your real name?” He answered, pushing her hand away.
“It’s short for Taliana...which I hate so do not ever, ever call me by that name.”
“Fine, I won’t.”
They both jumped as a loud and annoyingly nasal voice rang out,
“Are you Taliana Clarke?”
Tallie and Billie looked up to see a blonde middle aged woman with a clipboard standing over them.
“Well, out of the two of us it’s gonna be more likely to be me!” Tallie huffed back in reply, chewing noisily on her gum. Gloria looked down her nose and sneered,
“Yes well obviously. Sam needs you on set so if you don’t want to get fired you should move right now.!” She stood waiting, Tallie rolled her eyes and stood up, slowly picking up her bag. Her defences were up due to the fact that she had no intention of doing anything that Gloria told her, in fact she planned to make life as difficult as possible for her.
“Running all the way!” Tallie made a fake grin and barged past her. Billie leaned back to watch her leave and wondered how long it would be until Sam kicked her off the set.
* * *
“I need these two explosions at the back about halfway through.” Sam explained, gesturing to the two drums that stood either side of the set.
“But it won’t work,” Tallie blurted, seeing the obvious flaw.
“Why, I’ve though this whole thing out..there is no ‘it won’t work’ about anything!”
“For a start... I need more space, an explosion like that is gonna take more impact. Secondly...if you have the band there, they will get the impact unless you reduce the effect.”
Sam scratched his head, glancing from one end of the set to the other.
“Bullshit, I made the sets and it’s gonna work. Just sort it out.”
“No can do, I’m not touching one thing until you rearrange the set and make it safe.” Tallie crossed her arms and looked Sam straight in the eyes.
“Oh god for fucks sake, I’ll move the set. But you come in early tomorrow and you blow this thing up.” Sam growled, realising he couldn’t argue with the pyrotechnics expert and pointed at one of the stage hands to come and move the heavy drums. Tallie blew a large pink bubble and grinned,
“So that’s me done for the day!” Taking Sam’s silence as her answer, she headed towards the door triumphant at such an easy day.
“Who’s the chick with the attitude problem?” Mike asked, walking around the room trying to find some sort of reception on his phone.
“You mean Tallie?” Billie answered from the corner where he was trying to smudge his eyeliner in just the right way.
“Is that her name, how do you know anyway?”
“I met her earlier, ” Billie glanced down at the bag that lay at his feet, the bag that Tallie had left outside when she had marched off in a strop and his only way of getting to talk to her again. It would have been much easier to tell her as she had walked past that she had forgotten to take her bag but for some reason he had not said a word.
