Chapter 2
Ann called Steve in the morning, and went in the next day to start the demo. Over the next few days she recorded and re-recorded the song she sang in the bar that night plus a few others. Steve was always reassuring her, but Ann was a perfectionist and everything had to be perfect. After all, when was the last time she was offered the chance to make a demo.
Lynn stopped by the studio one day just to see how everything was going. Unfortunately she brought with her a bit of news. “Can I steal Ann for a bit?” Lynn said to the technician.
“Sure,” he said.
“What is all this about?” Ann asked.
“You might want to sit down,” Lynn answered handing Ann a cigarette as she sat down.
“Okay, what is it?”
“You got a letter from Adam today.”
“I got a what?”
“Please don’t be mad at me for reading it, I was trying to protect you.”
“Give it to me.” Lynn had never seen Ann so mad the entire time she had know her.
“How did he find me?”
“It was probably you mother. You know how much she wanted to see the two of you married.”
Ann began to cry as she read.
Dear Ann,
How are things? I know you must be wondering how I found you. To be honest it was your mother. I know you probably don’t want to hear from me. I just needed to talk to you. I can’t even imagine how much you hate me, not nearly as much as I hate myself. A few weeks after you left, Jenny told me the baby wasn’t mine. She was cheating on me. I guess what goes around comes around. I don’t know why I told you that. I don’t know why I am even writing. I guess all I want to say that I still love you. As much as I hurt you I know you aren’t going to take me back, I almost expect that. I just want you to know that I am sorry, truly sorry. I am sure that doesn’t mean much coming from me. I was immature and stupid. I didn’t know what I had. I never appreciated you and now you are gone, off in New York making a name for yourself. Please forgive me. If you ever find it in your heart to do so, I will be there, anytime anywhere. Please just call sometime to let me know you are doing well. I miss you.
Adam
By the time Ann had finished the letter, she was sobbing. “How could he do this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why Lynn? Why now?” She got up off the couch she was sitting on and Lynn grabbed her and held her tight. Crying into Lynn’s shoulder, Ann sniveled, “I was starting to be really happy. Why does he always ruin everything?”
“I know, I know. Just let it all out.” As Lynn consoled her friend, all she could think about was getting to Adam and pull him apart. He fucked up everything all the time. ‘I just hope she doesn’t take him back like she did the last time,” Lynn thought.
“What is wrong?” Steve asked as he saw Lynn helping Ann into the elevator.
“Family problems,” Ann said still crying a bit.
“She will be back tomorrow,” Lynn told Steve.
“He nodded and said, “I hope no one died.”
On the drive home, Ann told Lynn that she wanted to stop at Starbucks. There wasn’t any kind of mood that Ann was in that couldn’t be broken by a hazelnut coffee frappuccino. Lynn dropped her off at the Starbucks across the corner from the apartment. She walked in and ordered. As she waited, she heard the door open and felt to pressure change in the room.
“Ann, here ya go,” the barista said.
“Thanks,” Ann replied as she grabbed her drink. She turned around and began to walk out so fast she didn’t even realize when she fell back onto the floor. “I am so sorry,” she said. Then she looked up and saw who it was and no words would come out.

“Gerry,” Lisa said, “what is up with you? You haven’t been yourself lately. You’ve been all mopey since last week.”
“I don’t know,” Gerry said as he plopped into the comfy leather chair, the only one in his apartment. “I was just thinking about the past and how much of an ass I have been to people.”
“What are you talking about? Everyone you work with loves you and do you honestly think you would have as many fans as you do if you were a dick all the time?”
“I don’t know. But that isn’t what I meant. I was thinking about all the relationships that I have fucked up because I got bored and selfish. You are the only girlfriend I have ever had that didn’t hate me when we broke up.”
“That’s ‘cause I broke up with you,” Lisa said bursting into a laughing fit.
“You had to bring that up.” Gerry tried to look serious but couldn’t hold back a smile.
“Well really, we weren’t meant to be together and it was a mutual thought, I just expressed it before you.”
“Now you’re going to make me cry,” he said as he faked a sniffle.
“Shut up you big baby.” The expression on his face made Lisa laugh harder than she thought she could. Gerry attacked Lisa and tickled her relentlessly. “That isn’t fair! You can disable me just ‘cause you know I am ticklish.”
“Well you bruised my ego. You called me a baby.” By this time Gerry was laughing because Lisa had begun to tickle him. “All right, I quit. I cant take all this laughter. My stomach hurts.”
“You really are a baby,” Lisa giggled as she threw a pillow at him.
“That is it,” Gerry yelled playfully, throwing the pillow back at her. “Out, now. I get this kind of abuse from my brother all the time; I don’t need it from you.” He got up and shoved Lisa out the door.
“Yeah but I am better in bed! Call me tomorrow,” she yelled as she started to walk down the stairs.
‘Bad visual,’ Gerry thought as he pictured in his mind his brother in bed. Despite all the laughing, he was still in a bad mood, so he decided to go see that cute girl at Starbucks. She was always flirting with him. He used to think of her as his latest challenge, but not anymore. He had turned over a new leaf, as far as relationships went. The next girlfriend he had would have his full attention, and if something wasn’t right between them he wouldn’t go find someone new, he would work it out.
Gerry walked into the Starbucks and on his way to the counter, someone ran into him. They both fell to the ground.
“I am so sorry,” the girl said. When he looked up she was staring at him. It was her, the girl from the bar. Her eyes were more gorgeous up close than her could have ever dreamed. She looked stunned, like a deer in head lights. It was obvious to Gerry that she recognized him from that night. As they got up off the floor, they kept eye contact.
“Hi,” Gerry said hesitantly. “My name is Gerry.”
“Hi,” Gerry could hear the nervousness in her voice.
“I saw you sing last week.”
“I, I, I have to go.”
“Do you have a name?”
“Ann,” she said and she was out the door.
Gerry could only watch as she went away. He walked closer to the window facing the direction she was going. He watched as she darted into the apartment building next to his. ‘Are you joking?” he thought. ‘She cant really live right next to me?”
Gerry was in such a daze, he completely forgot to order his coffee or say hi to the girl that always flirted. He just walked home. He was tempted to look for Ann’s apartment number, but knew that would be weird. So he walked up to his apartment and sat down in his chair. As it began to rain, he stared out the window and wondered if he would ever see her again.

Ann could not believe what just happened. She was practically hyperventilating when she walked in the door.
“What is wrong?” Lynn asked, looking up from the stove.
“I saw him,” Ann said, falling on the couch.
“Adam? Where, I am going to kick his ass.”
“No, the guy with green eyes.”
“Who the hell is that?”
“Did you notice me staring last week when I sang?”
“Yeah, but I thought it was because you were a bit scared.”
“Well I was at first. But then I looked out into the crowed, and this guy with green eyes. They were so beautiful that I cant even find words to describe them. The more I stared at him and sang the more the rest of the room melted away. His eyes took me in when I was crying. I don’t really know how to explain what I felt, but his gaze calmed my nerves. When I was done, he started to walk over to me. Then I got offered the demo thing. He smiled at me and a felt my heart grow, and I watched as he walked away.”
“What?”
“Every time I closed my eyes since then I saw him, staring at me with those eyes. I haven’t stopped think about him all week, even as busy as I have been.”
“So…what happened today?”
“I ran into him at Starbucks. I mean I latterly ran into him; I knocked him down. Our eyes met and I just stared at him like deer in head lights. He told me his name and I ran away. I am such an idiot.”
“Well chances are that you will never see him again.”
“Yeah, but I don’t want that. He has infected my life. I haven’t felt this way in a long time. After Adam, I swore I would never love again. But now…I know you don’t believe in love at first site, but that is the only way I know of to describe it.”
“You must have hit your head when you fell. I have never heard you talk like this, not even with Adam.”
“What do I do?”
“I don’t know why you are asking me. You know my stance on that kind of relationship.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know.”
That night, Ann couldn’t sleep. She just sat in the living room, curled up in an oversized chair, watching the rain. The rain always calmed her. She just sat thinking. ‘Why now? Why is all of this happening now? I don’t need to fall in love. I cant fall in love, especially with someone who’s first name is all I know of him. I don’t even know if I will ever see him again.’ She closed her eyes, and was comforted by the fact that she would see him again, if only in her dreams.
