Ray sat in his living room, staring blankly at some music video as he tapped his foot rapidly against the coffee table. When he’d pounded the table long enough to send a stack of magazines crashing to the floor, he ceased his twitching.
"Are you sure you’re up for this?" Bob asked, looking up at Ray from behind his Chemistry textbook. "You can always call him and tell him you can’t make it, you know." Ray spit out the fingernail he’d been chewing and looked at his roommate.
"No," he said determinedly. "I have to show him I’m okay with being ‘just friends,'" he continued, making the quotation symbols with his fingers.
"Why?" Bob asked, his voice dripping with animosity. Ray was taken aback for a moment, as he’d never considered an actual reason for his self-torment. The truth was, if he continued hanging out with Mikey, he could pretend they’d never broken up… but Bob didn’t need to know that.
"Because I’d rather have him as a friend than not at al-" Ray was interrupted by the sound of laughter and a knock at the door. He stood up, plastering a smile to his face as he opened the door.
"Hey Mikey. Hey… Pete?" he said as Mikey stepped inside the apartment, followed by a shorter, dark-haired guy.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you," Mikey said as he plopped onto the sofa. "Pete called and said he was bored, so I invited him to come with us."
Ray hid his shock and disappointment by smiling and offering his friends something to drink, then rushed into the kitchen before they could see the flush creeping up his neck. He cursed under his breath when he saw Pete following him.
"Hey Ray. Are you sure you’re okay with this? I know its really soon an-"
"I’m fine," Ray said too cheerfully, hoping the blatant lie wasn’t too obvious as he handed Pete a beer and turned to grab two more from the fridge. It was widely known in their circle of friends that Pete had had a crush on Mikey since Ray introduced them three months ago.
"Whew!" Pete continued overdramatically. "Good. I knew you would be. You’re tough like that." He leaned in closer to Ray and continued in a near whisper. "Do you think you could help hook me up with him?"
Ray almost dropped the beers. He resisted the urge to punch Pete square in the face and turned to face him, smiling.
"Sure, I can try," he said brightly as they went back into the living room. Pete hadn’t meant any harm. Ray was just so good at hiding his feelings his friends often forgot he actually had them.
"Oh, who’s this?" Pete asked when he spotted Bob curled up in a chair in the corner of the room.
"Oh yeah, you haven’t met Bob," Ray said as he handed Mikey his beer. "Pete, this is my roommate, Bob. Bob, this is my friend, Pete." They exchanged hellos and polite smiles, then Bob returned to his book, drumming his fingers against the chair arm audibly. Pete shrugged and dropped onto the couch between Mikey and Ray, then grabbed the remote and began flipping through channels. Ray drained his beer and glanced at the clock.
"Hey Mikey, when does the movie start?" Mikey glanced at his watch.
"Oh shit! In like, fifteen minutes," he replied, draining his beer in one gulp as he stood up. "We'd better get going."
"Hey Bob, you coming?" Pete asked as they headed toward the door. Bob glared at Mikey and Pete as he snapped his book shut.
"You know what?" he said as he stood up. "I think I will."

"Good Lord, what’s with that Pete guy?" Bob asked when they’d gotten back from the movie.
"What do you mean?" Ray asked as he took a seat in the living room and pulled out his laptop.
"Oh nothing," Bob replied airily, returning to his corner chair and chemistry homework. "Except for maybe the fact that he was hanging all over Mikey right in front of you, less than a week after you broke up."
"Oh. Pete likes him is all," Ray replied nonchalantly as he slipped the disk containing the Lit paper he’d been working on into the drive. "I told him I’d help get them together." Bob stared at Ray, dumbfounded.
"I don’t understand it," he said, shaking his head. "You’re way too nice for your own good."
"Well, its not like I have the right to be upset with anyone," Ray replied, his voice losing some of its previous cheerful tone.
"Of course you have the right to be upset!"
"No, I don’t. Mikey and I aren’t together anymore. Who am I to get mad if he hooks up with someone else?"
Bob sighed, unable to counter Ray’s logic. "I just think that for people who are supposedly your friends, they show absolutely no regard for your feelings."
"Look, I really don’t want to talk about this anymore, okay?" Ray snapped, blinking back tears.
Bob sighed, realizing he’d struck a nerve. "I know, I’m sorry. I just can’t stand seeing people I care about get hurt."
"I know," Ray replied, looking up at Bob with a smile. "That’s what I love about you. No one messes with your friends."
"Exactly." Bob returned Ray’s smile. "You know I consider you one of my best friends, right?"
"Well duh, Bob. We’re roommates. That’s kind of a given." Ray sent his friend another smile, the first genuine smile Bob had seen from him since Mikey dumped him.
"How about we hit the clubs tomorrow night and get shitfaced?" Bob asked suddenly.
"Oh, great idea! I’ll call Frank and Gerard and see if they want to go. We haven’t gone out in forever!" Ray replied. "Who knows, maybe I’ll find a hot guy," he grinned, then returned his attention to his paper.
"Yeah, maybe," Bob said quietly, burying his face in his book.
