Chapter Two
Even though Logan's job didn't pay very well, it was enough for her to move into a small apartment shared by a guy she worked with and his brother about a week after she started at the restaurant. Teddy was a sous-chef at the restaurant and his brother Joey tended bar at a Club in the Village. Teddy took an instant shine to Logan, hating to see the kid all alone in the city and since his other room mate Carter got a big promotion at the Investment firm and moved out, they had a spare room. Logan moved in with little ceremony, she only had one bag full of things and a large shopping bag with some clothes she had bought at a Thrift store. Joey greeted her with as much enthusiasm as a a guy rushing to get ready for work could.
“Nice to meet you. Don't touch my food.” He said as he pulled on his shoes and jacket and headed out the door.
Teddy and Joey were rarely around, they worked long shifts and when they weren't working they were out with friends or girlfriends. It gave Logan time to be by herself, where she could remove the bindings she had begun to wrap herself in, devised of strips of a sheet she had cut up and then pinned closed at the side. While she had never had much of a chest, she felt more comfortable with them flattened down, especially in the thin cotton shirt she was required to wear for work. She didn't want to catch a chill and have her nipples standing out and she couldn't wear a bra while she was supposed to be a guy. Locked away in her room she could remove the bindings and just relax and read a book or watch TV...it wasn't much of a life but at least she wasn't getting the shit kicked out of her.
Orlando stood just off set, watching as they carpenter's assembled a piece of the set that had been destroyed in the last take. His co-star, while being a sweet girl was a terrible driver and she had accidentally pressed the accelerator on a car that was supposed to remain stationary for that shot. The result was she crashed into the interior of the house that was being set for an upcoming scene. The interior was destroyed and several prop guys were hurt. Now the interior had to be reconstructed and then repainted and then the exact same props needed to go back in, they would have to hire some more people to work the props. It was a continuity nightmare and the director was almost having a heart attack about it all.
“Well it looks like we get the rest of the day off.” Douglas Powers said, he was to be Orlando's character's sidekick.
“Yes, it does look that way. What will you do?” Orlando asked.
“Go find Sheila and spend the afternoon getting drunk and fucking. What about you?”
“I'm not sure. Maybe go for a walk.” Orlando answered. He was probably just going to wander around the city.
“God, Bloom...it's New York! At least go pick up some Broad for a one night stand.” Douglas laughed and pounded Orlando's back.
“I don't think so.” Luckily He was spared anymore of Douglas' advice because the director came up to them and told them they had the rest of the day off.
'Brilliant' Thought Orlando as he ran to take a quick shower and change out of costume.
He found himself in Times Square, the old cliché of where to go when you were in New York but he couldn't help himself, he wanted to be lost among the people and to watch them. He found it fascinating to view people when they didn't know they were being observed. He stood sipping his late and watching the people scurry by. A young couple with a little boy holding their hands, singing a song of some sort and smiling cheerily, two older ladies taking pictures of the surrounding area, obviously tourists, a man talking on his cell phone while he tied his shoe, brushing a scuff mark away when he was done. A young woman trying to hail a cab but getting no response, his attention was drawn to shouting near the corner and he turned to look. It was a group of about 10-15 people listening to what appeared to Orlando to be a homeless man shouting to repent because the end was near and then he would convulse his body and shake and tell them the Holy Ghost was coursing through his body. Most of the people were taking video on their cameras or cellphones or just laughing, shaking his head Orlando walked away, bumping into a guy in a blue puffy jacket and a blue knit hat pulled down over his head.
“Sorry.” Orlando said to the guy, who swiveled to look at him, nodding his head and carrying on. Orlando checked his watch and decided he should go back to his apartment and order some food.
'Wow that guy was so cute...and the accent.' Logan thought as she made her way to the restaurant, she had made a trip to the thrift store to get a warm jacket, the end of October in New York was too cold for her sweatshirts, it had cost her $10, and she was happy to have it.
She entered the rear entrance and started to pull her hat off, smoothing her short hair down before pulling her coat off.
“Hey Logan, give Joey a call at home.” Teddy called from the stove when he saw Logan.
“Ok.” She went to the phone and dialed the number. Joey had a line on a job.
“Helen, that works the lounge here, her cousin Jeff works on a film set. Their props guys got hurt today, they need someone fast. I figured you could do it. You would need to join the union though.”
“I don't know anything about props or making a movie.” Logan said to him.
“You won't need to. Jeff says he can show you everything. Basically you'll be a body just moving stuff around.”
“What's the number it's worth a try.”
Jeff told Logan to come down to the set in the morning and he would get his buddy in the union to push Logan's paper work through. He was apparently desperate for a few guys and told Logan.
“You cause me any trouble and I'll break your legs” Logan laughed politely but had the feeling Jeff wasn't joking.
“Don't worry about me. I never cause trouble.”
“Good. See you tomorrow.” Jeff slammed the phone down and Logan couldn't help be feel excited, she was going to work on a movie set for a lot more money then a bus boy made.
