Its been a while since I updated this fic, coz frankly I forgot about it….i have a few chapters already written so they’ll b up soon, evern though no-ones reading it. Im just updating for the sake of it ^ ^
Shock runs down from the base of my neck and down my spine, and an unknown feeling catches my jaw, before I can respond. My mind scrambles to undo incoherent thoughts, into conscious ones. Brett Lee, someone who I had considered a good friend, one of my best. But now someone I must view under a whole new light. I’m not saying I don’t find him attractive, which I do, and I’m not saying he’s not my type, which he probably is. It’s just I wouldn’t be able to even think about anyone else until I get Damien away from my thoughts. However it is a bit difficult for me to do that, having always been prone to want what I can’t have.
Damien doesn’t appear to know how to take my silence. He nudges me with his elbow, having grown impatient. I shake out of my daze, and look back at him, he gives me a reassuring smile.
“So what do ya think? I’m not trying to play cupid or nothing, it’s just that your both my mate’s, and I want what’s best for you” He nudges me again, only this time playfully. “What do you think?”
In my nervous state, I automatically put my hand in my hair and begin to flatten it, and spike it back up, my hands then rest on my knees flattening the creases in my pants.
My mouth finally makes contact with my brain to attain lucid words.
“I’m not sure? I sort of ……” I couldn’t finish the sentence, that would just be too much information, if I told him that I fancied someone else, then he’d just badger and badger me until I told him who with the intention of making fun at me. He always does that. He say’s he wont, but he always does.
“You sort of what? Don’t you like ‘im?” He asked slight shock lacing his voice.
“No! I do! Never mind” I breath in heavily. “I think I need to have a think about everything.”
“No problem” He stood up. “You gonna head back out for the rest of training, or is your eye still giving you shit?” I shake my head and lay back down on the bench.
“Nah, I think I’ll just wait it out in here, probably come and watch” He smiles, nods, and leaves.
-----------------------------------------
Watching the guys practicing, I paid a little more attention to Brett Lee than I would have under normal circumstances. He’s bowling in the nets to Simon Katich, Simon Katich the person I consider to be my best friend having played together for so long. Brett Lee walking back down the nets to take another bowl to Kat, looking into the stand at me he smiles, I take note of the smile, wide, very….. toothy. I used to tease him about his toothy smile, but now, it’s different. But before he can take the next ball, a grinning Damien Martyn strides down the pitch arms emphasizing his long steps, his eyes fixed on me as he runs toward Brett. I sigh, my god, what’s he doing? His chat with Brett Lee is short, with several glances in my direction. He gives him a pat on the back and an overly enthusiastic thumbs up, before turning to me and repeating the gesture, I cover my face with my hands as he takes off.
---------------------------------------
I catch up with everyone retuning from the nets and the field. Everyone taking their time, having had a longer training than usual. As I walk slowly behind them back to the change rooms, Brett Lee slows down to walk with me. A smile gracing his lips.
“How’s ya eye? Looks purple” He asks, a little to sympathetically.
“Yes it is purple. Nice to know you know your colours!” I smile playfully. “Yeah, it’s really fine.”
“So ….um… I was wondering what you were doing after this?” He looked down at the ground. “I thought that maybe we could get a drink together, ya know, and catch up”
I stop walking, and in a mocking tone reply. “Are you asking me out?” He raises an eyebrow.
“You noticed this time” My mind flashes back to all the times after training, Brett had asked me a similar question, however I always had other plans. Tonight unfortunately, the same applies. Simon’s coming round for a few drinks tonight, it’s a monthly tradition.
I shrug sadly. “I actually have plans tonight. Maybe next time” He smiles.
“Sure, I’ll be asking again soon” He says, and jogs ahead to talk to Damien Martyn. Walking by myself I flick my collar up in a futile attempt to look like I’m deep in thought. Which I was. Thinking about my ‘feelings’ for the unavailable Damien, but the available Brett Lee.
----------------------------------
“………..So, what do ya think?” I ask, having told Simon everything. He leant back on his hands, still smiling, he’s been smiling the whole time. It’s not like I through a couple of jokes in there, what the hell does he have to laugh at?
“I knew it” He said, it’s all he said.
“What do you mean? Knew what? About Brett? Or that I was gay?” I ask. He nods.
“That you were gay, I have an eye for it. I knew my mate in school was gay, and I…..” He looks thoughtful. “Well, and I knew you were too”
“So you got it right once before me, what makes you such an expert?” I question.
“I got it right, that’s all that matters!” He confirms. I jumbled thoughts out of my head.
“Ok, whatever. This is beside the point.” I say, he agrees, leaning slightly forward. “What should I do?” He take’s a short sip of his drink, and shrugs. No, don’t shrug!!
“I don’t know? Maybe you should give Brett a chance?” My mouth twists in deliberation.
“But I’d feel like I’d be lying to him, if I were with him, but liked someone else more”
“That may be, but if you were to tell Damo, you’d have to remember that he does have a girlfriend, and also you may ruin any chance you had with Binga” Now that’s logic for ya! I didn’t think of that. I basically poured the remainder of my cup down my throat. Usually our get togethers consisted of Kat drinking VB and me drinking coffee.
“Maybe your right” I conceive, he smiles.
“Maybe? I’m always right. Trust me. You don’t want to pass up something that could be so perfect, for an unattainable crush? Yuek! That sounded so gay!” He coughs. I pretend not to take offence, I didn’t need to try too hard, his playful smile settling my discomfort. He adds something standing up. “Just pay a little closer attention to Brett, it’s the little things that makes someone special.” He shudders. “Why am I talking like this! Gay talk must be some kind of disease!” I laugh, and he points at me. “I must have caught it from you! I hope it doesn’t last” I’m not insulted. It’s true, he does sound ‘gay’. Then again who am I to judge. “Anyway, I’d better go. Training in the morning. See ya there I guess” My mood dampens at the thought of having to wake up. I really miss all that sleep I used to get.
“Yeah, see ya there” I mimic, standing to escort him to the door, he steps out but turns on his heal.
“Don’t forget what I said will ya. I don’t want ya staying all ‘ga-ga’ over Marto!” He says, hitting me playfully on the shoulder, when I smile and nod. I can’t make any promises.
I should go to sleep now so that I don’t feel like I’ve been his by a bus at training. This movies boring anyway, at least I think it’s a movie. But I’ll have another shower first, that’s what I need; a shower, to clear my head.
The steam in a hot shower is so soothing. Perfect to get certain thoughts out of my head. I don’t need anything weighing me down in sleep tonight. Better yet I don’t need anything distracting me at training again, the last thing I want is another black eye.
In the distance I can hear the phone ringing, I decide to leave it, they’ll call back later. Hot water cascades down my back, and I turn to let it run on to my face. I sigh heavily and lean against the wall of the shower and just let the stream of water run down my chest.
The phone rings again. This time I turn off the shower, rap a towel around my waist and make a dash for the phone, rubbing my hair dry on the way. Who would be calling this late anyway? I, for one am usually well asleep by this time.
I pick it up on the 6th ring. I’m out of breath, and my voice only just comes out as I breath heavily both from the hot shower and running to the phone.
“…Hello?” I answer. The line is silent momentarily.
“Pup, it’s me!” My breath catches in my throat, at the familiar voice.
