Chapter 2 – Convincing Orlando
“Come on girl” Orlando called the puppy as he walked on the pathway to their spot. “There’s a good girl. Come and sit here by daddy” he said as he petted her and sat down on the grass to enjoy the fresh air outside.
“Hello.”
A voice made him look up into a pair on long legs clad in a loose denim skirt. He immediately was on his guard since no one ever sought him out and talked to him in public.
“Hi” he said shyly as he looked at the brunette. He had seen her before.
She was in the park in the morning, taking pictures on people or sometimes just sketching in her book. Even now, her camera bag was slung over her shoulder. She looked a little familiar but he couldn’t place her name.
“I’m sorry to disturb you and you probable don’t know me but may I speak to you please? I have something to ask you if you don’t mind.”
“Sure no problem” Orlando said as he patted the space next to him on the grass, immediately liking her bubbly personality.
“Hi” she said “I’m Jacqueline Mortenson.”
“Orlando Bloom” he replied as they shook hands.
“A thespian heritage?” she asked and he laughed.
“I have no idea. You’ll have to ask my mother why she loved Virginia Woolf’s books so much.”
“Well anyway” she said “I want to ask you a big favour, but you can let me know if you don’t want to. My father owns a gallery in town and I’m having my first exhibit in a month’s time. I took a few pictures of you and your puppy and he loved them. He wants me to use you as a subject for the exhibit. That is if you want to?”
“Wait a minute” Orlando said “You mean Viggo Mortensen; THE Viggo Mortensen is your father.”
Jackie nodded and smiled.
“I love his work” Orlando said “He’s so well known all over the world. I have two of his poetry books which I loved as a child.”
“So you’ll allow me to use you?” Jackie asked and Orlando nodded.
“Thank you very much Orlando” she said as she gave him a quick hug, not noticing him stiffening up when she touched him. “So, can I buy you a coffee?”
“Thanks for the offer” Orlando said as he called Maude to him and snapped her leach on “But I really need to be getting home. So other time okay?”
“That’s fine” Jackie replied as she handed him a business card. “This is my number at the gallery. If I’m not available you can leave a message with Jenna or my father. They’ll make sure I get it and then we can discuss a time that suits you best.”
Orlando nodded and took the card from her. “See you then. Come on girl.”
“Bye” Jackie said as she watched then walked down the path.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jackie sighed as she looked at the photos that were scattered on the table in front of her.
It had been a week since she gave Orlando her number and she hadn’t seen or heard anything from him as of yet. He wasn’t in the park as well and she couldn’t help the feeling of loss it created within her.
“I’m sorry Jackie” Viggo said as he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder “But we’ll see if we can’t use what we have.”
Jackie nodded and looked up as she heard the little bell which indicated that someone had just opened the front door.
Jenna was off today so she stood in on those days to give her father some time to work on his paintings. She was surprised to see Orlando stumbling into the room with Maude held tightly in his arms. His cheek was bruised and there was a cut on his forehead.
“Orlando” Jackie called as she ran to him and took Maude from him.
Viggo was behind her and pulled him into the gallery, flipping the ‘open’ sign to ‘closed’. He led the young man to a chair and gently pushed him down into it.
“What happened?” Jackie asked as she tenderly probed the cut, causing Orlando to slightly hiss in pain.
“Maude ran in under my feet when I came down the stairs to answer the phone this morning” Orlando replied “It wasn’t her fault but it caused us both to take a rather ungraceful tumble down the stairs. I just came back from the vet when I decided to come as see you. Got a little dizzy on the way.”
“I’ll go make you some tea” Viggo said as he walked to the tiny kitchen leaving Jackie to talk to Orlando.
“I’m sorry I didn’t call” Orlando said “But me and my friend moved to a bigger apartment and things have gone a little hectic.”
“That’s okay” Jackie said “We can always talk now. I have an idea but it’s going to sound sick or nasty.”
“I don’t scare that easily” Orlando said as he patted his lap for Maude to jump up and snuggle to him.
“Can I photograph you now?” Jackie asked “I know it sounds gross but I thought it might add a touch of humanity and mortality to the exhibit. You always see people looking all perfect in pictures. Why don’t we show them a sort of dark side as well?”
“That actually sounds good” Orlando said “You really are like your father. You work to defy all normal rules and in the process create your own works of art.”
“Why thank you” Viggo said as he entered the room with a tray “I’ve never heard my art being described like that and it’s very flattering.”
“I’m sorry if I offended you sir” Orlando said as he held out his hand “I’m Orlando. Orlando Bloom.”
“Please to meet you Orlando and don’t be scared. I always appreciate hearing new aspects and opinions about my work. So are you going to be posing for Jackie here?”
Orlando nodded and Jackie handed him his tea.
“I was thinking of taking a few pictures now” she said “Do you think it will be okay. I want to add reds to it when I develop them.”
“I think that’s a stunning idea. You can use my studio if you want to. The sun will be perfect by the big windows. Finish your tea and then we’ll decide what to do after that.”
Jackie nodded and smiled at Orlando. He looked a little drawn but she was planning on making him smile again. She also couldn’t ignore the flutter as she felt a sudden urge to protect this young man from everything.
