Chapter 2
Hello. There’s no need for me to tell you who this is, as I’m sure it’s rather obvious by now. Hopefully, you have all come to the same realization that I have.
Dir en grey should never have broken up. Of all of our mistakes, that was the biggest. And now, I’m coming to all of you in the hope that you will reform the band. I’m sorry that I won’t be there to see it. I won’t be there to tell you all face to face. In fact, the only one that I will be seeing today is Shinya. It’s sad that one of us has to die, before the others can see what they have, don’t you think?
Totchi, I know you are crying now, but don’t. In the end, this is for the best. I don’t expect you to believe me now, but one day, you’ll see it.
Kaoru, they have probably called you over. Don’t do the ‘leader’ thing and try to stop me. Watch over them, just like you always did. There was so much I wanted to tell you, but I never was able to bring myself to do so.
Shinya, I’ve wanted to tell you several things too. Life is too short to do everything, but if you get the chance, you should really try. You’ll never go anywhere if you are too scared of falling.
Die, I think of everyone, you are the one person I could say anything to and not have to worry. However, there is a first time for everything. I always liked your name in the past. I thought it had an interesting double meaning. First, it was your nickname, something with which we could identify one of best friends. Then, there is the irony. It’s ironic that your name spells the only thing that will cause a revival of bliss for everyone. My death is meant to make you see what you have in front of you… your friends. My only regret right now is that I cannot see this band back together.
You can collect my body in the alley way between your place and Shinya’s. It’s nearly 3 now, so I should get going.
Good bye,
Kyo
Shinya read the letter several times, his hand shaking as he held the paper. Suddenly, he stood up and headed for the door.
“Where are you going?” Kaoru asked as he stood up.
“To find Kyo.”
“We’ve already looked in the alley. He wasn’t there.” Die said as he, too, made his way to the front door.
“Was that before, or after you called me?” Shinya asked, hoping for the former.
Die looked at his friend, slightly confused. “Before.”
“What’s -that- have to do with anything?” Kaoru asked, slightly more annoyed than concerned.
“When you called, Kyo had only been gone for a couple of minutes. There’s a chance that he is at the alley now.” As Shinya said this, Toshiya wiped the tears from his face and slowly stood up. “Better yet, there is a chance that he is still alive.”
Die looked at Shinya for a moment before opening the door and running out. “You’re right, there’s still a chance.” He called over his shoulder as he made his way to the alley. Shinya followed. Kaoru looked at Toshiya, and when the bassist made to follow them, Kaoru grabbed him by the arm.
“You shouldn’t go.”
“But, what if they find Kyo?” Toshiya was very confused by the way that Kaoru was acting.
“The very reason behind why I don’t think you should go. If they find him, and he isn’t alive, you wouldn’t be able to stand it.” Toshiya opened his mouth as if about to protest, but nothing came out, and he let his shoulders fall in defeat.
*meanwhile*
Shinya caught up with Die rather quickly, as the guitarist had stopped before going into the alley so that the other could catch up. They began walking rather quickly through the alley, each watching their side for any sign of Kyo.
“There!” Die ran ahead of Shinya, who was in momentary shock at the appearance of the older man.
They found Kyo sitting against a wall, barely qualifying for conscious, let alone alive. His arms were covered in cuts of various lengths and depths, and blood was still trickling from several of them. As Shinya approached his side, he saw that Kyo was sitting in a large puddle of his own blood, as well.
Die finally broke down as he sat next to the bleeding man. “Why? Why did you do this?” Tears ran down his face as Die picked Kyo up from the ground, the blood seeping into his white shirt. “It’s okay, Kyo. I’m going to get you to a hospital. You’re going to live… then, I’m going to kick your ass for trying a stunt like this.” Shinya followed close behind Die, trying not to let him see how much it hurt to see Kyo this way. “Shinya, run ahead and open the back door on my car.” Almost as quickly as he finished the sentence, Shinya was turning the corner from the alley to Die’s apartment.
Upon his return to the apartment, Shinya found Kaoru and Toshiya standing outside waiting. Toshiya had a near gone cigarette in his mouth, and a new one in his hand ready to replace the currently lit one. Kaoru didn’t seem to be too worried, but Shinya dismissed it as being a common trait for him. Kaoru never did like to show when something bothered him, after all.
Shinya went straight to the car and opened the back door. Die was coming around the corner, and Toshiya all but jumped from the porch. He was no longer crying, but the fact that there were several cigarette butts on the ground showed that Toshiya had done almost nothing other than smoke very quickly the entire time they were going for Kyo.
When Kaoru saw Die carrying Kyo, he walked down the stairs and stood by the car.
Just as Die reached his car, and was about to put Kyo in the backseat, Kaoru shut the door.
“Kaoru, what are you doing?” Toshiya asked. He never thought that Kaoru would do something to put one of their friends’ lives in danger.
“I should ask the same thing.” Kaoru said, looking Die in the face.
“We have to get him to the hospital. It’s the only way he’ll have a chance.” as Die said this, Toshiya opened the door again. By this time, Shinya was already inside the car.
“You can’t help someone who doesn’t want it. I would have hoped you already knew that.” As Kaoru answered, he slammed the door shut yet again. Then, he leaned close to Die and whispered into his ear. “Especially, given the things you have been through already.”
Confused by Kaoru’s actions, Shinya got out of the car, and walked around so that he was standing right in front of him.
“Kaoru, please don’t do this. Let us take him to the hospital. Please.” With Kaoru’s attention on Shinya’s plead, and how hurt he already sounded, Die and Toshiya took Kyo to the other side of the car and got him into the backseat. Toshiya also got into the back seat, and was letting Kyo rest his head on his shoulder. “Please, don’t take Kyo away before I can have him.”
“Shinya, get in the car! We have to go, now!” Die said, just before getting behind the wheel. Shinya got in the back seat on the side opposite Toshiya. “Kaoru, you too.” Die ordered. When Kaoru didn’t move, Die rolled down the other window and stuck his head out. “Kaoru, get your ass in this car, or I will give you another reason to be going to the hospital.” Knowing that the younger guitarist would be able to kick his ass without any real difficulty, Kaoru did as he was told.
Before he could get his door closed, or his seat belt on, Die was speeding down the road. After a brief fight with the door, Kaoru managed to get it shut, and his seat belt on. He looked over at the speedometer to see that they were going 60 in a 35mph zone.
“Jesus Christ, Die! Slow down!” Kaoru sounded as if he were about to have a heart attack.
“Are you crazy?! Kyo is dying and you are telling me to ‘slow down’?” Die looked down at the speedometer, then up into his rear-view mirror at Shinya’s worried face. “If I need to be doing anything, it is to speed up.” At that, he slammed his foot down onto the accelerator, which in turn caused everyone in the car to be slammed against their seats.
Die was now going 70 in a 40, and the hospital was coming ever closer.
“Die..?” he didn’t so much as flicker an eye in Kaoru’s direction. “…Die..? The hospital is getting closer….” Kaoru was getting noticeably nervous, in fact, the only two who didn’t seem so bothered by the pace at which the hospital was nearing were Die, who was driving, and Kyo, who was currently unconscious.
Before they knew what hit them, Kaoru, Shinya, and Toshiya were very glad to have put on their seatbelts, as they were flung forward and the small straps were the only things keeping them from hitting whatever was in front of them.
Die was the first one out of the car, followed closely by Toshiya, who’s initial reaction was to kiss the ground he stood on for having survived.
“Die, how the HELL did you get a driver’s license?!” Kaoru asked, still sitting in the front seat, apparently glued to that very spot.
“What? I’m a careful driver… usually.” Die answered as he retrieved Kyo from the back seat. Shinya got out of the car and stood next to Kaoru’s door.
“Are you coming, Kaoru?” Shinya asked the older man, his voice trembling slightly. Kaoru looked up at him for a moment before nodding slowly.
“Yeah, just give me a moment to collect my thoughts, okay?” Shinya nodded, and then ran to catch up with Die and Toshiya, who were already halfway down the first hall.
* * *
Nearly an hour passed, and the four men were still waiting in the lobby. Kyo had been rushed into one of the emergency rooms, and that was the last any of them had seen of the small vocalist.
Kaoru was sitting against the wall, his hands locked together between his lets. He seemed to be lost in his thoughts. Shinya was leaning against Die, who was stroking the drummer’s hair lightly. The seat that they shared doubled as a nice sort of bed for Shinya, because he hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. Toshiya was pacing back and forth in front of the admittance desk, his hands on the back of his neck.
Finally, Toshiya spoke.
“That’s it. I can’t take anymore of this.” And he turned and headed for the door, pulling out a pack of cigarettes from his pants pocket. Just before he reached the door, Die called him back. One of the doctors that had taken Kyo was now standing before them. Toshiya ran back to join his band mates in finding out any news.
“How is he?” Die’s voice was barely more than a whisper, as Shinya was still sleeping peacefully.
“Well, he’s going to survive. Had you waited even a minute longer in getting him here, I might not have been able to give you that bit of good news.” The smile the doctor wore while he said that faded with the sighs of relief from the other three men. “However, I’m afraid that some damage has been done.” Upon hearing this, Kaoru stood up.
“What kind of ‘damage’?” As Kaoru asked this, an almost unbearable amount of guilt seemed to press in on his mind. He felt as though he was responsible for whatever was wrong. Like he had hurt one that he had worked so hard to save all those years ago.
“Mr. Nishimura’s amount of blood loss has taken a toll on his heart and brain. You should expect various changes in his personality and health. He may become more irritable, or even violent in some situations.”
Toshiya smiled at the doctor. “That’s nothing new, he was already like that.”
“When can we take him home?” Kaoru asked, after a slight chuckle at the bassist’s response. The doctor smiled at the guitarist.
“He should be able to leave in a few days, given everything checks out with him until then. As for his behavioral changes, and the difference between then and now, he will be on some medicine that may cause nightmares, and even chemical imbalances in his brain that can cause him to have hallucinations. It would be best if he stayed with one of you after he gets out of here, at least for the first couple of months.” at this, the doctor looked from one member to the other. Shinya had woken up long about the word ‘medicine’.
“He can move in with me.” Shinya said as he stood up. Everyone turned to face him, having not noticed he had awakened.
“Well, then, if no one else has anything to say about it, we will put you in charge of Mr. Nishimura’s--”
“Kyo.” Shinya corrected.
“We will put you in charge of Kyo’s care.” the doctor looked around at the band members and no one said a word, they simply nodded in agreement. “Very well, then. You will be listed as soul care-taker for Mr. Ni- Kyo- upon his release. Your name is?” the doctor corrected himself when Shinya opened his mouth.
“Terachi Shinya.”
“When can we see him?” Die finally spoke.
“He’s asleep right now, but you can visit him anytime between 8am and 8:30pm tomorrow. He’s in room 613, just down this hall and to the left.”
“Thank you. We’ll be here in the morning, then.” Kaoru said holding out his hand. He and the doctor shook hands, and the guitarist turned to leave. He quickly noticed that he was the only one headed for the door, and turned to see the others talking amongst themselves. He decided not to worry about what they were talking about, and turned once more to leave when he heard his name followed by Kyo‘s. He froze and his eyes grew wide. He had a very good idea what they were talking about. He decided he didn’t want to know what was being said about him, so he left the hospital and started his rather long walk home.
