Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Josh Lucas. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Author's Note: So here it is, the second chapter! I hope that some of you are still interested in this story, but most of all, still interested in Josh. I know he hasn't exactly been Sir Works-A-Lot lately, but I believe in him as a person and as an actor and that he will recover from the not so successful projects of 2006. I hope you agree and keep supporting Josh! Oh and please, please review this story/chapter! And I'd like to shamelessly advertise my other story "Infliction" which is in bad need of some reviews. Okay, hope you enjoy this one – this one's smut free, sorry, but the next one's all smutty goodness. I just hand-write my stories in class and then need to work up the energy to type them on the computer lol…so bear with meJ
The key clicked as it was turned in the lock, and Julie pushed the door to her tiny apartment open. She took a look around. The shoebox that was her apartment was absolutely stuffed. Her bed, TV and computer desk took up most of the space. The kitchen was integrated into that room; only the bathroom was separate. Especially after coming back from these celebrity events, she didn't like her place. It really was too small, even too small to be comfy.
With a sigh, she dropped her suitcase and was greeted by her cat, who rubbed herself against Julie's leg and meowed happily. "Hey, Nala, did you miss me?" She picked up the cat and hugged her tightly. "You wouldn't believe what's happened to me…" she mumbled, half to herself, with a dreamy smile on her face. Nala started to struggle in her arms and Julie snapped out of it. "Right, right, food for the cat, unpack, and then…" She paused as she remembered the slip of paper in her wallet.
During the flight, a million thoughts had passed through her mind. Anyone who knows at least a little bit about the human psyche will understand that while the whole thing with Josh had improved her self-esteem considerably, she hadn't suddenly done a one-eighty. When she thought about calling Josh, she imagined first how great they could be together, how they would have a relationship and how he would love her for who she was. But then that little, malicious voice in the back of her brain, which Josh had successfully shut up for quite a while, piped up again and laced her thoughts and hopes with doubt. What if it had been just a spur of the moment? Surely, he must have reconsidered by now and was probably hoping she wouldn't call. He was, purely and simply, out of her league. She dimly recalled that she had read somewhere that he used to date Salma Hayek, someone Julie thought to be one of the most beautiful people in the world. She knew she could never compare. But she had a sliver of hope that maybe she didn't have to.
Julie ran these thoughts over in her head for the hundredth time while she was filling Nala's food and water bowls. She decided to distract herself for a while and switched on the TV. "TV needs food." she said to herself in determination. When she opened the fridge, her gaze immediately fell on the large tub of Häagen Dazs Belgian Chocolate. She moved to grab it, but stopped herself. "No. This won't make things any better." she deliberated and reached for an apple instead, chucking the tub of ice cream into the garbage bin.
She curled up on her bed and tried to concentrate on the episode of Lost that was playing on TV, but when it was over, she couldn't really remember any of it. Something about someone getting shot. A movie started up on the channel, but she wasn't really looking at the screen. Unable to resist, she had taken her wallet out and was now holding the slip of paper in her hands, repeatedly running her hands over Josh's handwriting. She thought back on the condom incident and laughed quietly, but then all the memories of his hands upon her skin, his mouth on her moist flesh and the sensation of his hardness buried within her came back to her and she closed her eyes with a deep sigh.
Julie had never been more confused in her life. Two voices were battling within her and it exhausted her so much that she could not make a decision whether to call Josh or not before she drifted off to an uneasy sleep.
The next day was a Saturday, and Julie decided not to write her report on the premiere till Sunday. She needed to clear her head first, since she had woken up just as confused as she had fallen asleep. Something which always helped her was a stroll through the city, so she put on her favorite jeans, a white T-Shirt and some comfy sneakers and was about to set out when she remembered she hadn't put on any make-up. She headed back to the bathroom and put some powder, blush, mascara and lip-gloss on her face. She never left the house without make-up – she felt naked without it.
Finally, she was ready to step out onto the street, and as she stood on the side walk her worries already seemed to get a bit less heavy. She had moved to New York only a couple of months ago, and, scared at first, she'd gradually come to love it. Sure there were spots she would never go to on her own, but mostly, she felt perfectly safe and at home. This feeling of being at home came mostly from the fact that the city was so multicultural, and that, like her, hardly anyone who lived here was actually born here. She loved taking in the feel of the city, although today, her mind clearly was elsewhere.
She had been walking for quite a while when the scent of the air suddenly changed. Looking up, she noticed that she'd ended up in China Town without really planning to. As it was a summer weekend, the street was bursting with people, and the air was filled with a potpourri of scents that came from the little eating places and the dried fish and exotic spices which were being sold from baskets on the sidewalk. It was almost as if she had entered another country. She smiled to herself, remembering why she especially loved this part of town.
For the first time, her thoughts were taken away from Josh, and she enjoyed walking along the shops and taking in the atmosphere. She was so lost in her reverie that she almost jumped in shock when she heard a familiar, deep voice very close to her while she was stopping in front of a shop window.
"You're not stalking me, are you?" the voice growled with an audible grin in it. Julie wheeled around and her heart skipped a beat as her eyes locked with his insanely blue ones.
"Oh my God, um, hi Josh, no, I…I wasn't, I mean, stalking you or anything, I live here – well not here as in here in China Town, I live in Manhattan and I was just taking a walk, so this is a total coincidence, I swear…" Julie listened to her babbling and noticed that now it really did sound like she was some kind of stalker.
Josh's bright eyes had lit up even more. "You live in New York? Wow, that's really great!" he exclaimed. Apparently, he had hoped for something like this. Julie smiled. "So, were you stalking me?" she asked. Josh laughed heartily. "No, I actually do live right here in China Town…What a coincidence – must be fate, huh?"
Julie didn't know what to say, so there was a short, uncomfortable silence.
"Found my note?" he asked carefully. Her face turned a bright shade of red immediately. "Yeah, I did. To be honest, I wasn't sure if you actually meant what you wrote. It seemed a little to good to be real, you know? I just didn't know if I should call you…" she said with a slight quiver in her voice.
"Listen, Julie, I'd really like to talk about this, but not here. My apartment's right around the corner." he said quietly. Julie hesitated for a moment. "I promise I won't try anything!" he added, winking and flashing that irresistibly devilish smile at her. Although she didn't take his word on this, Julie couldn't help but laugh and Josh took her hand in his as if it was the most natural thing in the world. His warmth spread through her and this innocent touch sent shivers down her spine. Silently, they started walking.
Julie gasped when she saw his apartment. Compared to hers it was a palace, but despite the spacious and modern interior, it seemed very comfy. There were throws in warm colors on the brown leather couches and sports memorabilia on the walls and shelves. The kitchen was separated from the main living room by a long, high counter. On top of it, there were a few empty Chinese take-away boxes. There was a staircase at the back of the large room that led to a second level where, so Julie supposed, his bedroom had to be. She quickly took her eyes off the staircase, as if he could guess her thoughts.
"You want something to drink?" he asked, moving into the kitchen. "No, thanks." she answered, but followed him into the kitchen nonetheless. She noticed a child's drawings pinned to the fridge with magnets. One showed a man diving into water that appeared to be on fire. The other showed the same man lying on his back on the floor, covered by a white blanket, with some sort of stick protruding from one of his eyes.
"These are… unusual." Julie remarked. "Yeah, my Godson did those, heaven knows why his parents let him watch my movies… but I think those are pretty cool."
They moved over to one of his couches and Julie sat down, sitting uncomfortably straight up and kneading her fingers. She had never been good at hiding nervousness. He noticed this and placed his hand upon hers to calm her. While her nervousness did not dissipate, an immediate sense of arousal was added to it. When he began to speak, the hum of his low voice sent little jolts of electricity through her and reverberated deep within her body.
"Okay, here goes… I need you to understand this: what happened that night meant a lot to me. And I meant every word I said to you. I don't give just anyone my private number. And I found myself hoping it was you every time my phone rang in the past twenty-four hours. I don't wanna put any kind of pressure on you. But I saw in your eyes that you also felt that there's something between us. I don’t know what that is yet, but I want to find out, and I know that I need to have you in my life somehow, crazy as it may sound."
As he delivered this little speech of the kind he obviously liked to make, Julie became more and more convinced that he was being truthful, but also she began to realize that she was falling in love with him, and that he might in fact be falling in love with her as well. And this scared her.
She'd built up a shell over the past few years and her past relationships, and she didn't know if it would break that easily. She had a hard time really letting anyone in these days. And she was scared of the world she would inevitably enter if she became involved with him. She imagined herself on a red carpet and had to stifle a laugh, but she noticed now that after Josh had finished speaking, he had moved closer to her and was now cupping her face in his hand. Everything around her seemed to fade away when his lips touched hers carefully, hesitantly. Almost instinctively, she responded, and the kiss soon gained intensity. His hand went to the back of her head and he buried his fingers in her hair, pulling her as close to him as possible. His other hand was on her knee and now creeping up towards the place where Julie already felt heat and wetness.
Suddenly, she broke away and shot up. Josh looked up at her, his blue eyes sparkling both with arousal and confusion.
"I'm sorry, I can't do this… not now…I gotta get out of here…" Julie mumbled, short of breath, and with that, she grabbed her purse and stormed out of the apartment before Josh could say or do anything. He was still surprised by her sudden change and wondered what he had done this time. He was starting to become a bit frustrated because it was so difficult to determine what was okay with her and what was not. He scolded himself for not keeping his hands to himself, but when it came to Julie, he had a hard time controlling himself. All he could do now was hope that he hadn't scared her away for good. He sensed that they might have something wonderful together, that they might complete each other in many ways. If only I could get through to her, he thought, and with a sigh, he went to the fridge and took a tub of chocolate ice cream out of the freezer.
Julie was out on the bustling street again. She didn't really know why she had run out on Josh. Her heart had, in that moment, been overwhelmed with emotion and fear, and the only thing that seemed logical was running away. This was certainly not the way she wanted things to go with Josh, but the whole situation had been a bit too much for her. Back in the hotel room in LA, everything had seemed so unreal, but here, at home, the realness of it all struck her full force. She decided to walk the streets for a little while longer. Hugging her arms around herself, she started walking away. After about half an hour of thinking incessantly about Josh and everything that had happened, she began to feel like her head might explode and her heart might burst. And then, very suddenly, she stopped in her tracks. It had hit her like a bolt of lightning: there simply wasn't a problem. She was making it all difficult, and it just didn't have to be this way. She was falling in love with him, and he was falling in love with her, and that was all there was to it. There was no need to ponder the consequences or the reasons why he would want her. She was, yet again, standing in the way of her own happiness. It was time for her to live her life. Turning on her heel, she made her decision and headed back towards China Town.
