I still don't own PNH....If I did I wouldn't be here............
Nina rolled down her window and turned up her radio. She waited while David shoved his human sized duffle bag in the back seat and then got situated in the passenger seat. She looked at him then smirked, “Ready now cowboy?”
“Yep let’s hit it. Where are gonna eat at?”
“I don’t know am I taking you to your house after we ate?”
“Yeah and you’re gonna spend the night. My house is an hour and a half away from yours and it’s already 2 in the morning.”
“Ok. Eat ‘n’ Park out near you then?”
“Sounds like a plan if I ever heard one.”
She smiled and pulled out of the parking lot heading towards his house. A path she was very familiar with now. After he had bought his new house she had driven to and from there more times than she could count. It was a total mess when he had bought and but he had just smiled and said project.
That was like him. Always happy, always ready for what ever came his way. She had decided a while ago he must have been dropped on his head as a child. That, however, was one of the reasons she loved him. This line of work was changing him, she was losing her David and getting in return a man she didn’t know. One she really didn’t care to know. He was becoming jaded by life.
She listened to him sing and joined him a few times on songs that she just couldn’t help herself with. But she mainly just listened to him. She loved his voice. He had the most incredible voice she had ever heard and it sent shivers down her spin. She just wished she had the never to tell him that.
It seemed like they pulled into the parking lot in a matter of minutes. The ride really was not long enough for her. She loved just being near him and yet he had no clue. All she wanted was something a bit more than she had and it seemed that she would never get it. All she wanted was to be with him, near him, but no she was destined to just watch from a distance. She sighed feeling a bit like a Lifetime Movie.
They sat at a table near the back of the building, hoping they would be left alone during their meal. As fate would have it though, that was not the case. Several drunken fans staggered up the moment they had sat down. David smiled and chatted with them, signing everything they thrust in his face.
Nina just smiled and sat there quietly, avoiding eye contacted with the inebriated girls. On of the girls however, noticed her presents and jabbed her hard in the shoulder with a manicured finger.
“Who the fuck are you?”
“Nina.” She said blandly as she looked into the blood shot eyes of the skinny brunette.
“What? Not David’s little tramp?”
“No, just Nina. The overly single sexy blond sidekick, that watches from the side lines.”
“No a whore is more like it. You stay away from him, he is mine do you understand that?”
“Hey Cowboy?”
“Yeah Nin?”
“You seein someone?”
“No why?”
“Just checkin.” Nina smirked at the brunette and went back to looking at her menu.
“Watch your back bitch.”
“For what? You? Please don’t make me laugh.” David looked on in confusion. He felt like he had missed something very important. The brunette stormed off but not before she flicked Nina off.
“What I miss?”
“Nothing. What are you getting?”
“Breakfast Smile with ranch. You?”
“Grits and a Wild Cherry Pepsi.”
Nina closed her menu and looked at the cheap painting on the wall. The smile she had on her face earlier had vanished. She desperately wanted to be somewhere other than the restaurant. What had she been thinking when she though she could have David. She was a fool. All the little girl wanted him and he could have any of them, hell he could have all of them. What made her think that he would want her. She was his sidekick watching from the sidelines just swooping in when things got rough.
“Nina?”
“Yeah?”
“Did you hear me?”
“Sorry no I was somewhere else. What did you say?”
“How’s work?”
Nina looked up to see their waitress walking over. They placed their orders and she smiled. “It’s difficult.” She ran her hand through her hair and continued. “I was evaluating this one guy and, you don’t want to hear this never mind.”
“No I want to hear it. Tell me.” They both nodding and smiled at their waitress as she brought their drinks.
“He umm he was this guy that would dress as a woman and rape and murder men on the streets of the city late at night. It was him and it wasn’t. He had disassociate personality disorder. Uhh multiple personality disorder. He had four personalities and his female personality was the one that was killing, his main personality had no recollection of his actions. She didn’t like me. She thought I was going to hurt him in some way and that caused a great deal of problems. I ended up testifying in court stating he needed locked away in a maximum security mental facility. He took up most of my time since the last time I saw you.”
“Wow. Why do you do it?”
“Do what? Thank you. May I have a refill? Thanks.” Nina smiled at their waitress as she handed them their food and took her empty glass.
“The job. Is it dangerous?”
“Every job is dangerous if you are not careful. I do it because I love it. I love every bit of it. I give a voice to people who have lost theirs.”
“I never thought of it that way.”
“Most people don’t.” She gave a weak smile and looked down at her plate. She picked at her food and grabbed some packets of sugar. She stirred it in and continued to pick.
“How’s Greg?”
“Huh? Oh I don’t know I haven’t talked to him in a few months. He left me as a birthday present.”
“Nin I’m sorry. I didn’t”
“How were you suppose to? I haven’t really been around.”
“Neither have I.”
“You’re busy.” She looked back down at her food still just picking.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah just tired.”
“Do you want to go?”
“No, eat.” She pushed her food away and fussed with her cell phone.
“Nina. What’s goin on?”
“Nothing why?”
“You can’t lie to me. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing of importance. Eat.”
“Whatever.” She watched him eat in silence. He kept glancing at her, his eyes held a mix of worry and annoyance. They finished their meals and David paid for it as Nina went to warm up the car.
David sighed knowing this was going to be a long ride home. He signed a few more autographs and took a couple of pictures as he headed for the car. He would find out what was bothering her. She never acted like this unless it was something big.
