Chapter 1
"Manaaa-saaaan...(*)" Seth's annoying whine went straight to Mana's already strained nerves and he had to restrain himself from snapping at his vocalist.
They were in the dress-room behind the studio waiting for their turn to be interviewed by the two hosts of the most popular TV-show concerning music in Japan. Mana already knew them having been often invited in past times and frankly -he hated their guts. The guy was just a suppressed idiot in a suit but he could bear with him. It was the girl he couldn't stand the most, with her stupid giggling and her fat face. Every time he saw her he wanted to strangle her or spit on her or something along those lines..
"What is it Seth?" Mana answered finally turning to the pouting man in front of him.
"I want to ask a big favor of you. There is one of your old Malice Mizer band-mates here and I wondered if you could introduce me to him? I am a big fan of his.." Seth was nibbling on his lower lip smearing black lipstick over his teeth.
'Közi is here?' Mana wondered silently while he pushed Seth not too gently in front of the mirror so he could see the color he had given to his teeth. 'Or Yu~ki? No, it has to be Közi if Seth is so excited. I can picture Seth as a fan of his.' Out loud he said: "Sure, why not? I'd like to catch up with him too, haven't seen him in quite a while."
"Great! Thank you Mana-san! His turn is right after ours, I guess we will meet him on the plateau before we leave."
---
Mana was sitting absentmindedly on his uncomfortable plastic chair with his arms crossed in front of his body throwing hostile glances to the hosts every now and then for good measure, while the rest of Moi Dix Mois answered their questions. The female host tried every now and then to make him respond interrupting his day-dreaming and he decided to hate her even more for that. He was almost 16 years now in the music-business and everyone had accepted by now that he just didn't talk when he didn't want to, but this stupid little girl just didn't seem to get it.
"Mana-sama(**), we have a surprise for you that will hopefully make you talk!" she tried again, giggling kind of creepily "An old friend of yours is also a guest of our show tonight! A bell will shortly announce his arrival. Nee Mana-sama, aren't you curious who this friend might be??"
Mana mechanically nodded once, throwing a small sneer in that woman's direction. His manager had mentioned nothing about a surprise. Mana had made it clear more than once that those kind of surprises at live-shows were totally unacceptable. From the corner of his eye he saw said idiot behind the cameras panicking and gesturing wildly to the hosts that he wanted a commercial break. Mana threw him a blank glare and contemplated if just firing him would be enough after this display of incompetence, but his thoughts were interrupted by a bell and a door opening to reveal....
Gackt.
'No..' was the only thing on Mana's now panicked mind but his professionalism made him shift his eyes immediately to the screen monitoring him to be sure that his expression continued to be as blank as always. It didn't matter that he was sweating and that his blood was racing suddenly with incredibly high speed through his veins, his picture resembled his usual stoic self.
'Calm down. Stop being foolish now!' he scolded himself and watched Gackt come closer.
'He resembles nothing of the man I knew so long ago.' Was his first thought as always when he saw Gackt in a magazine or on TV. 'Why is he here? After I have managed to avoid him for so many years.. What sick game is this?'
Despite his inwardly boiling fear and anger Mana nodded coldly but politely to Gackt who returned the greeting.
"Mana-sama, you don't seem very happy to meet your old friend." the female host aka poisonous snake said with a smug smile.
Mana took Gackt's facial expression carefully in and realized that the man most likely hadn't expected to meet him there either. Not that his face was showing much of a surprise to everyone not knowing him very well but after working with this man for so many years Mana was able to tell that he probably hadn't had a clue that Mana would be also there.
Ignoring the disturbing fact that he still could read Gackt's subtle facial expressions Mana decided to focus on finding creative ways to make the female host disappear forever not only from that show but from the entire show-business -and maybe even from the planet altogether. With his current pleasant thoughts he turned to gesture to Seth to answer the question on his behalf, hoping that he would handle the conversation as good as possible.
"Mana-sama is very happy to ..." he didn't pay attention to what Seth was saying, he just nodded now and then, and kept his eyes locked on Gackt's who was returning the look from behind his colored sunshades. He had to admit that he was still attractive although he couldn't understand why he liked it so much to dress like a dumb dress-man. His hair was still blond-ish as he knew that it had been in the last years and his face looked somewhat changed and more mature now. Nothing connected them anymore except of the yearly payment cheque Mana's label had to send him for his share of any profit made out of sold Malice Mizer Discs.
"I am very thrilled to meet Mana-sama again. I have to admit that it is very difficult to stay in touch with good old friends while being as busy as we both are." Gackt's deep voice sounded. "But I feel as if I never lost my connection to Mana-san as I find myself almost tempted to answer for his behalf like I used to back in Malice Mizer."
'Bloody hypocrite..' Mana almost chocked on that. It was getting very difficult for him to restrain himself from standing up and leaving the studio. The tiniest reminders of the time with Gackt and Malice Mizer were still like cruel stabs to his heart and he wanted to slap Gackt for saying that back then they were connected, when it had been proven that they never truly were as had left them without warning..
10 minutes later Mana felt kind of calmer as he had stopped listening to the chattering hosts and the other musicians a long time ago, when he realized that the interview was coming to its end and the hosts were finally about to announce the long awaited commercial-break.
He stood up as soon as the cameras had stopped filming and went immediately to the backstage area. A fine-boned hand on his shoulder stopped him from going further and he didn't have to turn around to see who this hand belonged to.
"It has been a long time, Mana." The deep voice behind him confirmed that it really was Gackt standing behind him.
"I would have preferred it if it had been much longer." Mana sneered involuntarily but turned around to face him.
"Did you know about this?" he asked full of hatred, staring disgustedly at the point where Gackt's hand touched him.
Gackt getting the message took his hand from his shoulder and sighed. "No. Someone told me that they had a surprise for me but I never imagined that it could be you."
"I see. If you had known you wouldn't have come." Mana stated and in the same time the words left his mouth he wanted to bite his tongue for saying that aloud. He had sounded wounded and bitter and that was totally unacceptable. He didn't know what had gotten into him, it was thoroughly out of character for him to speak without thinking.
"Let's take this unexpected meeting as a sign to end the grudge between us. Too many years have passed to hold on to the past .." Gackt said watching Mana cautiously who raised an elegant brow seriously angry now with himself and with Gackt who hadn't let Mana's words pass without noticing.
"What makes you think that I do?" was his snappy reply.
"Nothing. You have obviously moved on and are doing more than great, same as me. So we should meet for old times sake and catch up with each-other. How about I come over sometime for dinner? If you don't have a problem with that, of course." Gackt's gaze was piercing right through him waiting for Mana to admit that he wasn't really over the past by telling him to go to hell.
"That would be nice Gackt-san, for the sake of the good old times. Would next Thursday be convenient for you?" Mana asked sweetly surprising both of them. He absolutely refused to show defeat although he mentally shuddered at the prospect of dining with Gackt.
"Very convenient. At 9 o clock? Will you be cooking yourself? I have really missed your infamous dishes!"
"I'm afraid that my busy schedule wont allow me to do so. The dinner will be prepared by my housekeeper but I can reassure you that she is a much better cook than me." Mana replied abruptly. He would rather die on the spot than cook for him. From the corner of his eye he spotted Seth and held his gloved hand out to him.
"Gackt-san, I would like to introduce you to my friend Seth he is a big fan of yours. You will have to excuse me, I have some important calls to make. It was nice meeting you again." Mana said as coldly as it was humanly possible, nodded goodbye and fled as fast as he could.
