Susie asked her mom to come and watch Ian. The problem was that everyone wanted to meet Ian. Elijah kept to his word and did not say anything, but the word got around that I did have a son. I was not sure if Orlando would come. Elijah said that he was taken aback when he heard I was in town. Elijah said that he and his girlfriend just broke up and he wasn’t really in the mood to celebrate. I sat in the living room playing with Ian and his toys when I heard a booming voice. “Where is my namesake?” I laughed to myself knowing that Ian would be so excited to meet Uncle Ian, whom I named my little peanut after. “Danika, you so beautiful!” I ran and hugged Ian. “I missed you Ian.” I pulled away as Ian’s eyes fell upon the big brown eyes staring up at him. He leaned down and smiled big. “Hello little elf. You are so perfect! I am Uncle Ian.” I smiled slightly at Ian’s new nickname for my baby. “hullo.” Little Ian said as he ran to the back where Susie called his name. I looked up at Ian who smiled big. I know he sensed my fear. “He is perfect, Dani.” I expected a lecture again but nothing. I threw my arms around Ian. “Thank you Ian!”
We walked out to the front living room that was filled with laughter and chatter. “Oh my! Is that Dani?” I was flooded with hugs and kisses. I felt so welcomed. We talked about what everyone was up to. Then the subject came up. Viggo asked in his booming voice, “So, where is this little boy of yours?” I took a deep breath. Elijah jumped in before I could answer. “He is sleeping now, Vig. You can meet him later I am sure.” That stopped all talk about the baby boy sleeping in the other room. We all sat around the living room and just enjoyed each other’s company. I excused myself to the kitchen. Things were going good. I started to pour myself a drink when I almost dropped the bottle. “HEY ELF BOY!” I heard Viggo laugh. He was there in the next room. I stood there trying to calm down myself. I then heard Elijah say, “Yeh, in the kitchen.” Damn Elijah! I put the bottle back in the fridge as set of footsteps entered the kitchen. I closed the fridge to be met with a larger pair of brown eyes. “Hey Dani.” I stood there motionless for a few seconds. His eyes had a sense of sadness in them like he lost his best friend. Truthfully, we both lost our best friends. I smiled at him and walked over. I put my arms around him and hugged him. He hugged me tight. “I missed you.” I deeply inhaled his cologne. “Me too, Orli.”
The night went on with Orlando on one side of the room and me on the other. The subject of Orlando and I never came up. I knew that our friends would not allow it. With all the excitement, I did not notice a little set of brown eyes peering through the banisters of the stairs. “Momma?” I heard a soft plea. I jumped up and ran to the stairs. All eyes turned to the stairs including Orlando. “So this is the man in your life, Dani.” stated Viggo. Ian hid his sleepy face in my chest. Everyone ran over to see my little prince. At that moment I felt relief that Ian hid away. Sean played with Ian’s soft head of hair. “I still cannot believe you are someone’s mother.” That laughter that was coming from my throat stopped drastically when Ian lifted his head. His brown eyes stopped everyone in their tracks. Billy sat up from the couch where a stunned Orlando sat next to him. “Looks like a wee elf. Doesn’t he?” The crowd of men glared at Billy who returned to his drink. “I better get him upstairs.” I turned and fled up the stairs. Behind me, I heard footsteps quietly following me.
I closed Ian’s room door and laid him on the bed. The little boy looked up at me with sleepy eyes. “Why was everyone calling me an elf?” I smiled half-heartedly at the joy of my life. “Baby, they are just being funny. Remember I told you that they are a funny bunch.” I moved the curly hair away from his eyes. “I like them all. Momma?” I looked down at my angel. “Yes, baby!” He looked at me with a questioning stare. “If theses are funny people, why do you look sad?” I leaned down and kissed the little boy who could see into my soul. I did not realize that the door slowly opened behind me. “It is hard for momma to come back here. You know with grandpa going to heaven and some friends that I have lost. It makes momma sad.” He sat up in the bed and softly touched my cheek. “Momma, I don’t like it when you are sad. I will get your friends back.” I smiled at his sincerity. “Lay down Ian. You can play tomorrow.” He laid back down and cuddled into his big pillow. I got up from the bed and turned around. I was stopped by a pair of brown eyes staring at me. “Why didn’t you tell me, Dani?”
I quickly moved to close the door behind me. “DANI!” I pushed Orlando into the bathroom behind us. I closed the door behind me. “Would it make a difference?” I looked at his angry face. “Dani, that is not fair. He is my child!” I glared at him. “NO HE IS MY CHILD!” I turned to leave the bathroom as a strong set of hands grabbed my arms. “You can’t just ignore this Dani! Why didn’t you tell me?” I struggled out of his grasp and leaned up against the door. I tried so hard to not cry in front of him, but the tears welled up in my eyes. “You said that marriage and children were not in your future. I would not have Ian feel like he was a mistake.” I dropped my head in defeat. I felt the heat of Orlando coming closer to me. His voice was almost a whisper. “You never gave me a chance. This is why you left without a word.” I looked up at his eyes, which were now red. “I did not want us to hold you back. I gave you your chance in your career as you wanted.” Orlando backed away from me as he opened the door. “I wanted you, Dani. I wanted you.” He walked out the door. I heard muffled talk between the guys downstairs. I then heard the door slam in the living room. I crumbled to the floor in a ball of tears. I felt the door slightly open. “Dani? Can I come in?” Elijah asked. I moved away from the door as Elijah came in. He sat on the floor with me. His arms hugged me tight as I cried myself to sleep.
