They just stood there staring at each other for several moments, uncomfortable and unsure of what to say. Danni was trying to figure out if he was a threat to her and Rob just wanted to be sure she wasn't going to bother him.
"Well, I should go get the milk and meat out of the car. It's pretty warm out there for October, I don't want it to spoil." She finally spat out.
"Oh..yeah me too." They walked out to their vehicles, not exchanging anything but glances. They were strangers afterall. They worked in silence, each of them bringing their groceries into the kitchen and then going out to get their bags of clothes.
"You take the room you want and I'll decide after." Danni offered, he was doing her a favour by letting her stay afterall. He nodded and went upstairs carrying a black duffle bag. Danni went to start putting the groceries in the fridge and cupboards. She opened a door above the sink and screamed in horror at a huge black spider.
"Robert!" She scream and jumped back. He came thundering down the stairs and into the kitchen looking around wildly for whatever was scaring her.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
" A giant spider! It almost touched me." Danni said shuddering with fear and revulsion.
"It's a spider for God's sake. Don't be scared." He said moving toward the cupboard then he suddenly froze and yelped.
"It's fucking huge." He said. "Is it a spider or a rat?"
"I told you. Here kill it." She said handing him her shoe.
"I'm not killing it. It could be poisonous."
"It's not poisonous." She told him, shoving him toward the spider, he held still.
"Are you an expert on spiders now?"
"It's too hairy to be poisonous, everyone knows that." She lied.
"Well I don't know that." He said building up his courage and inching slowly towards it, shoe raised to smash it. Just as he was about to bring the shoe down, the spider moved quickly, almost jumping, towards him. They both screamed and ran out of the kitchen.
"Nothing to be scared of huh?" Danni said looking at him.
"It jumped at me. I just need to figure out a plan of attack." He said with confidence.
Fifteen minutes later he was back in front of the cupboard. He was wearing oven mitts, his leather jacket, to protect him from the venom dripping spider fangs, boots and had a broom to knock the spider out with.
"It's not here." He called, looking around wildly.
"What do you mean it's not there? Where did it go?" She asked frantically from the doorway.
"I mean it's not where it was. It could be anywhere."
"Well I am not going in that kitchen til I know it's dead." She said stubbornly.
"I can't kill it if I can't find it. Come in here and help me look for it." He ordered.
"I don't think so." She said from the safety of the doorway.
"Well then it can crawl all around the house." He threatened and she stomped into the kitchen.
"Fine."
They opened drawers and cupboards, not having any luck until Rob finally found it behind the curtains. He quickly mashed it and then took off his "hunting" gear.
"You aren't just going to leave it's carcass there are you?" She asked.
"What am I supposed to do with it? Stuff it and mount it on the wall?" He asked sarcastically.
"Wipe it off with a paper towel." She said as if talking to a child. That pissed him off. Wasn't he here to escape being babied?
"Do it yourself!" He said to her before stalking off upstairs. In his room he paced around at the end of his bed. What was with this chick? He couldn't believe the nerve of her. She tricks him into inviting her to stay here, then she makes him kill the spider. What was next? Cooking her breakfast in bed and feeing it to her?
"Not fucking likely." He growled. "She can just fuck off and stay out of my way." He reached into his bag and started to pull out his clothes. He had shoved them all into drawers when he felt his stomach rumbling. It had been a while since he ate and he was starving.
"I'll just ignore her." He said to himself as he opened the door and started down. At the top of the stairs he smelled food. Steak. His mouth watered. He hoped his frozen pasta would be as tastey smelling. She was wiping down the counter and there was a steak in the frying pan, with onions in the pan as well. He frowned and walked to the fridge and pulled out one of his TV dinners. Reading the instructions while she opened the oven door and checked the baked potatoes she had cooking in there.
"There's enough for both of us Robert." She said when she saw him staring longingly at the steak. "I made sure there was enough. I felt bad about not being very nice too you."
"It's alright. I'm just a bit senstive sometimes. It does smell good. Are you sure there's enough?"
"Positive. Have a seat Robert. I'll get the wine." She told him.
"I don't drink." he told her, sitting down at the table.
"Oh..."
"You can go ahead."
"No that's alright. I'll just have a Sprite." She went to the fridge and got herself one.
"I'll have one too, please." He said from the table. She put one down in front of him and put the food on the table, sitting in the chair across from him. She cut the steak in half and put some on his plate and the rest on hers.
"This is great....I just realised I don't know your name." He said to her. She laughed.
"We never did have an introduction. I'm Danni. And you're Robert." She said autimatically reaching out her hand in an offer to shake.
"Please, call me Rob." He said taking her hand.
"Rob it is."
They ate in an awkward silence with the only real conversation was Rob complimenting her on the food she had prepared and asking her how she had cooked it. Afterwards Danni started to clear the table and Rob told her he would do it. It had been years since he had done any sort of cleaning. But he remembered his mum had always had him help clean up after dinner, he figured he could handle washing a few dishes and a table down. Danni went up to her room to settle in but she stayed in Rob's thoughts while he cleaned. He wasn't sure what to make of her. Or himself for that matter. He felt like he was a totally different person out here in the mountains. No one here knew him, knew he was wealthy or notorious. He was just a normal guy. And while it felt liberating it also scared the shit out of him, he had never really been on his own for years, since he had been using drugs and alcohol and he couldn't remember a lot of what happened in those days. Could he live without all that stuff? The bullshit that was his life? When he snuck off he was sure he could but now, while washing dishes he wasn't so sure. But he couldn't go back so soon, he had to stick it out, however long it took.
Danni changed into a pair of sweatpants and a long sleeve t shirt. Being sure not to look like she was trying to look sexy. She didn't want to give Rob any ideas. He was pretty good looking and had a sexy accent but she didn't feel like getting involved in a fling. She would be friendly, like he was a cousin or a brother and then after her vacation was up she could go back to work and not have any regrets.
"What makes you think he would be interested anyway?" She said to herself, looking in the mirror. She had always liked the way she looked. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, nice skin. Her lips were a bit skinny but she could live with them. She had dropped about 25 lbs since starting med school, she just hadn't had time to eat. And she walked so much, the campus was huge and gave her a lot of time for exercise. But since she now worked strange shifts she lived on fast food and had put about 15 lbs back on. So she wasn't fat but she wasn't skinny either, sort of inbetween. She figured she was decent enough looking, not a model by anymeans but certainly no dog either. Sighing she turned and left the room, going downstairs, heading to the fireplace to light a fire. It had been warm during the day but the night was cooling down quickly, she was happy there was a big thick duvet on her bed to keep her warm. Rob came out as she began to arrange the kindling.
"Need some help?"
"I can handle it." She said to him, waiting for him to try to brush her aside and take over like most men did.
"That's good because I don't really know how to make one. Well besides lighting stuff and letting it catch fire." he laughed.
"There's more to it than that. You have to start out with a small fire and build it up. You can't just throw giant logs into the fire or it gets smothered." She explained to him.
"Oh. Can you show me how?" He asked. She nodded and he came over next to her and watched while she explained. Several times they bumped shoulders or brushed hands and her face felt hot. A heat she was pretty sure wasn't coming from being too close to the fireplace.
