Later that evening Stefan felt a little dizzy. He had drunken more Champagne than he was used to thanks to Neil offering him a fresh glass whenever a waiter passed them by. Before he had met Neil he had never drunken Champagne but now he found it was getting rather common. Right now he was glad that he could sneak away from all of Neil's friends and the endless small talk and shoulder padding.
He loosened his tie and sunk down on a sofa in a relatively quiet corner of the huge living room. Watching people was always so fascinating when he went with Neil to one of these celebrity parties. Mind you, he was just 18 and the kind of parties he was used to had been class-trip parties or dancing school balls. People usually got drunk on beer, not Champagne and after midnight the girls were snogging with the popular guys. Well, if girls were snogging with popular guys on one of Neil’s parties, the guys were usually much older than the girls or the guys were kissing boys anyway. It was all quite confusing sometimes.
The last time he had seen them, Kevin and Chris had amused themselves on the improvised dance floor where they danced to the disco classics blurting out of the speakers. He could still see Neil though, talking to a woman with long hair, huge glasses and huge teeth. Apparently she was a very close friend of Neil’s but Stefan had disliked her from the start and was calling her ‘the horse’ when he thought about her.
He was so lost in thought that he was slightly startled when somebody sat down next to him. When he looked up he saw the host of the party smiling faintly at him.
The older man was now without his jacket and his waistcoat had been unbuttoned.
“Have they left you alone?” he asked.
“No, Neil is just talking to somebody I don’t like very much.” The boy replied.
Ian laughed. “Yes, Janet can give one a pretty hard time but you should not take it personal.” He followed Stefan’s gaze and frowned slightly.
“You are rather taken with him, aren’t you?”
Steve stared at him, not quite understanding the question. “Taken?”
“Yes, like in: You seem to like him very much. I’ve seen you watching him whenever you think he won’t notice.”
“I…” Stefan began but the words got caught in his throat. Suddenly he realized that what the older man said was true. He did like Neil a great deal, yes, but there was more to it. He swallowed hard and paled.
“Are you okay?” Ian’s voice was soft and suddenly full of concern.
“Did I say anything wrong?”
“No. No, it’s just that I …I don’t now what I should think sometimes.” The boy sighed and saw Ian still watching him with a very thoughtful expression on his face.
He decided he liked the man, did not mind the lines of age in his face or the grey of his hair. Actually he had to admit that he found the older man kind of attractive.
Not half as attractive as Neil but still attractive.
‚Ohje,’ he thought ‚ `ich hab wohl einen Vaterkomplex, oder so.’
„I’m not used to... gays, I guess.”
The actor laughed again but Stefan could have kicked himself for saying something that stupid.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. I just… I never met any homosexuals when I was at home, not that I know of. I had a girlfriend and know everybody I know seems to be gay. It’s just strange.”
“You don’t have to apologize, I can understand you. When I was your age I was very scared by the thought of being gay myself. But I don’t think you have anything to worry about, most people here are gentlemen enough to accept another sexual orientation. I certainly will.”
With that he bowed slightly and grinned at Stefan.
“I know that. Although… Kevin, he wanted to show me a few tricks of how I should deal with all my new gay friends. He was very direct.”
“No, really? He did not mean what I fear…?”
Steve nodded. “I think he said that I should at least know how to give a decent ride.”
“Oh dear!” Ian gasped, laughing heartily. “I am sure he has some endearing qualities but manners and the command of the English language are not among them!”
Stefan giggled, suddenly feeling more at ease.
“Can I as you a question?”
Ian stopped laughing and nodded, inwardly bracing himself to be questioned once more about ‘the gay issue’. He suppressed a smile, thinking he would not mind examining this kind of question more closely with the kid. He was certainly cute, tall and skinny with a very boyish figure. Open, trusting face with brilliant pale blue eyes and a gorgeous soft mouth. Shy smile which exposed dimples and flawless white teeth. Sigh.
The boy hesitated for a brief moment, then asked:
“What is it like to be in love?”
For a second Ian was too stunned to answer. He just stared at the boy, then managed a smile.
“Oh, interesting question. I had feared you were going to ask what it is like to be with another man.” He noted with some amusement that the boy was blushing again. He sighed softly, crossed his legs comfortably and looked Stefan straight in the eyes before he spoke.
“Well, the classical answer would be that you can not eat, can not sleep and can not think of anything else but the person you are in love with,” he said, smiling.
“But I thought you would know. Did you not say you had a girlfriend?”
Stefan squirmed visibly in his seat but did not avoid the older man’s gaze.
“Yes, I said I had a girlfriend and it’s true but… but I don’t now if I was really in love wit her. You know, I first met her when I was 15. Dancing lessons. We went out.
We got together. It was nice. She was two years older than me so when she turned 18 we moved together. My mother liked her. She wanted me to marry that girl.
They were already making plans for our marriage. For the party, the dress, the rings, my suit…But I didn’t want this. So I applied for the studies here in London. They took me. And now I’m here.”
The words were tumbling out of the boy’s mouth in a rush. He looked embarrassed while he spoke but sighed as if relieved when he had finished.
Ian nodded slowly. “Yes, now you are here. In Neil’s company asking what it is like to be in love.” He smiled at the boy. “The only advice I can give you is to always follow your heart. No matter what you do, do what you make out to be the best for you, not what other people think is best for you. Follow your heart, boy!”
On the opposite side of the room Neil was trying to follow Janet’s endless talk. Normally he enjoyed her tirades and bitchy small talk but tonight he found it extremely hard not to let his thoughts drift off. He sighed inwardly; he was really not behaving much like himself lately. Spending so much time with that German kid.
And Stefan was really just that, he tried to remind himself for the millionth time, a kid. A very cute, very pretty, very intelligent, very sexy kid, but still a kid.
‘Strictly off-limits for a guy your age,’ Neil scolded himself.
Nevertheless he could not stop himself watching Stefan out of the corner of his eyes, wondering what his conversation with Ian was all about. He saw the two laughing together and felt instantly silly for wishing it were him whom Stefan was laughing with, not Ian.
‘You’re not getting jealous, are you?’ He thought with grim irony. He threw a quick glance at the boy. There was no doubt about the fact that this kid was absolutely gorgeous. Tall and slender with an adorable firm bum in those grey pants. Lips to die for, so baby soft and naturally red. What would he give for just one kiss…
“Are you in bad mood or did I say anything wrong?” Janet’s slightly shrill voice finally cut through his daydreams.
“Pardon? No, you did not say anything wrong. It’s just… I’m having a terrible headache. But I figured it would be silly to leave so soon, especially after I dragged Steve here and he seems to be enjoying himself so much,” Neil lied, suddenly feeling the urge to get out of this room, away from this party to some quiet place where he could talk to Stefan alone.
“Oh, your little sonny is sure capable of calling himself a cab to return to his students home,” Janet remarked, making the term ‘student’s home’ sound as if it was on the same level as some disgusting insect.
Neil shot her a murderous glance but choose not to reply. Sometimes it was wiser not to argue with Misses Street-Porter.
“If you’ll excuse me. I should really go and get some sleep.” Neil kissed his friend good-bye and left her standing there, staring irritably after him.
Just when he was approaching the sofa where Stefan was seated he saw Ian leaving. ‘Just as well,’ Neil thought.
Stefan beamed up at him when he spotted him and Neil felt his heart skip a few beats.
‘Dear God,’ he thought, ‘being so adorable should be illegal.’
He sat down next to the boy, promising himself that he would restrain his drifting thoughts and would be the perfect picture of the fatherly friend Stefan had obviously picked him to be.
“I’d like to leave,” he said, deciding to stick to the story he had invented for Janet. “I’ve got a bit of a headache.”
“Oh.” Stefan looked at him with obvious concern. “Okay.”
Neil tried to read the look on the boy’s face but could not quite figure it out.
“Do you want to stay here or do you want us to share a cab?”
“I’m leaving with you. I’m tiered anyway.” Stefan answered immediately, smiling brightly. “I just tell Kevin good-bye. And Ian.”
“Sure. I’ll call the cab and wait for you here.”
