Week Top 24
~*~
*
We got paired with our roommates, and I was paired with Chris Sligh after Rudy, who was originally paired with Chris Sligh, complained about Chris Sligh’s snoring. I wanted to be paired with Chris Richardson, but I didn’t want to make it sound like I didn’t like Chris Sligh. Chris Sligh is a really cool guy, so I didn’t mind sharing a room with him.
It was a crazy week right away. We had to pick out our songs and practice them for the week, and then there were interviews, and photo shoots. We barely had time to breathe.
However, one night Chris Richardson and I were both excited. Alaina Alexander and Leslie Hunt, who were two of the girls that had made the top twenty-four, asked us to go out to one of the night clubs that was near our hotel.
Chris and I both jumped at the chance for a break from work and a night of fun. We eagerly agreed. So it was set. The night before performance night, we headed out to the club, just the four of us. We had to make it last, for our curfew was at midnight, and when we got there, it was already nine o’clock. We’d have less than three hours there.
As soon as we got through the door, it became apparent to me that Alaina seemed to have a little crush on Chris. How do I know?
“Oo, I love this song! Dance with me,” Alaina said as she linked her arm in Chris’ and pulled him off toward the dance floor to dance to Madonna’s “Open Your Heart”.
I’ll admit it kind of annoyed me. I thought we were all there to hang together the four of us. Instead. Alaina yanks Chris off to the dance floor without even asking Chris is he wanted to dance, let alone asking Leslie and I to join them.
“Wanna dance?”
I turned my head to the sound of Leslie’s voice. I looked as she gently grabbed my arm, and smiled up at me. “Uh, sure.”
We headed out to the dance floor, and fit our way in next to Alaina and Chris.
As Leslie and I danced, I kept my eyes on Alaina and Chris. I thought Alaina said she had a boyfriend! She had one at the auditions anyway. Well right now she was dancing like a slut, and was all over Chris. I felt bad for thinking of her as a slut, but I couldn’t help it. I don’t know why it bothered me so much. It just did.
I turned back to Leslie.
She smiled at me. “Come on, get into it! You don’t seem to be having much fun.” She pouted, and I felt bad. So as K.T. Tunstall’s “Black Horse And A Cherry Tree” began to play, I let myself go, and got into dancing with Leslie. Even so, I was not about to dance like stripper-like as Alaina was.
B*********C
Alaina was crazy. People were going to start talking about us, and making up rumors about us if she kept dancing the way she was. Her dancing had gotten even more risqué with the change of song. Apparently K.T Tunstall got her in a dancing mood too. I was a little embarrassed, but I didn’t want to be rude, so I danced along with her, just a little more toned down that she was dancing. I guess she wasn’t dancing too provocatively, but the grinding up against me in a dirty dancing type manner was making me a little uncomfortable—especially since I had just broken up with my girlfriend. I mean, what would Gale think of me dancing with another girl like this so soon after she and I breaking up? I don’t think she’d be angry, but she’d be hurt.
I glanced over at Blake and Leslie to try to take my mind off Alaina and her crazy dancing. I wished we could have all danced together. After all, we had all come there together. I mean, technically, the four of us were dancing side by side, but I thought we would all acknowledge each other when we danced, and no one would dance with anyone in particular. It bugged me that Leslie was smiling at Blake and dancing with him. I don’t know why.
Just then, Blake looked over at me, and our eyes met. He gave me a little smile, so I smiled back. My heart began pumping wildly. I quickly turned back to Alaina, blushing a bit at my sudden change of heart pace, and blushing even more at the reason. Why Blake had that affect on me, I didn’t know. All I knew was that I had better focus on Alaina again for now—at least until the song was over.

I was glad when after two more songs the girls were both ready to order drinks and sit down.
“Why don’t you ladies find us a table and give us your drink orders? Chris and I will go up and get your drinks,” I suggested.
Chris nodded.
“Why don’t you and Leslie go up? Chris and I will wait here. I think I tired him out with all the dancing,” Alaina said with a grin. She had her arm latched in Chris’ again, and I wanted to smack her.
Again, I felt bad for feeling that way towards her, but I wanted to spend some time alone with Chris, and she was putting a major damper on that. In fact, I was surprised she didn’t suggest sitting at two different tables.
“That sounds like a good idea. I always like ordering my own drinks anyway. If I give my order to someone other than a bartender, they always end up messing it up,” Leslie stated.
Of course, I thought to myself.
“Well I’m not a big drinker, so I’ll just have a root beer if they have it,” Chris said. I like it in the bottle.” He began to reach into his wallet, but I stopped him.
“Please,” I said. “It’s on me.”
Chris smiled at me in such a nice way that I would have bought him a six-pack of root beer if he had asked. “Thanks, man.”
“No problem,” I said.
“So does this mean my strawberry margarita is on you too?” Alaina asked.
Okay, that was rude, I thought. Instead of telling her so, I just grinned. “Sure thing!” I turned to Leslie so as to avoid being annoyed by more rudeness in case she asked. “And yours too of course.”
“Aw! You don’t have to do that, but thanks,” she said. She kissed my cheek.
I smiled. “I want to.” Her not being rude made me want to buy for her as well.
“We’ll be right back!” Leslie said to Chris and Alaina.
She and I then headed to the bar, and we ordered the drinks. I ordered a root beer in a bottle like Chris had, for it sounded good. Leslie ordered a beer. I was surprised a girl would order a beer. I don’t know why. I know girls drink beer. She didn’t even order a light beer.
As we waited for the bartender to bring us our drinks, I turned to Leslie. I had to ask her something. “Leslie, doesn’t Alaina have a boyfriend?”
Leslie nodded. “Yep! She and I are roommates, so I hear about him all the time. They‘re going to go to Hawaii as soon as she is done with American Idol.”
“Well then why is she all over Chris?” I asked.
Leslie made a face. “What do you mean?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess just the way she is dancing with him. She pulled him out onto the dance floor from the start. Now she insisted on sitting at the table with him, and wouldn’t let him and I get our drinks together. I kind of thought Chris and I would get to hang together when going out tonight.”
Leslie smirked, and we took our drinks that the bartender had just brought over. “Aren’t we all supposed to be hanging out—not just you and Chris?”
I blushed, and paid the bartender for the drinks. Leslie and I began walking back towards the table then.
“That’s what I meant. Sorry. I meant all of us. Now she pulls him off just the two of them, and dances like a stripper,” I said.
Leslie smirked. “Alaina just loves to dance, and I guess Chris was the nearest to her. Trust me—she loves her boyfriend. What does it matter to you anyway?”
I shrugged. “I just wanted to spend time with Chris tonight too is all.”
Leslie smirked. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you have a crush on Chris!”
I laughed nervously. “We’re just best friends. Please!”
Leslie smiled, and pat my back. “I know. I think it’s cute,” she said.
We got to the table then, and we gave everyone their drinks.
Alaina of course was sitting right next to Chris.
Leslie motioned to the seat on the other side of Chris, and winked at me.
I blushed, and took the seat.
Leslie sat on the other side of Alaina.
“Thanks!” Alaina said to me, as she held her drink up.
“Yeah, thanks,” Chris said with a smile.
I smiled too, and we all toasted.
As I drank my root beer, I looked at Chris, who was looking at me as he drank his root beer. I wondered if he had noticed Leslie’s giving of the seat next to him to me. I hoped not, for that would be quite embarrassing. I took another sip of my root beer.

I really wasn’t that tired out from dancing. I was more tired of Alaina’s dancing. I wanted to talk with Blake, so I was hoping I could go up and get the drinks with him. Of course Alaina thought she knew what I wanted, and insisted that I stay back with her. She is a really nice girl, but I wished she would tone it down a little. She had a boyfriend, after all. Even if she hadn’t I was not interested in her in the slightest.
“Wouldn’t Leslie and Blake make a cute couple?” Alaina asked me as we waited for them.
That threw me. I looked towards the bar to see Blake and Leslie talking. I wondered what they were talking about. “What makes you think that? They have only known each other for a short while.”
“I know, but love never does take long to blossom,” Alaina said with a wink at me.
I turned my attention back to her. “You do have a boyfriend, right?”
Alaina laughed, and gently placed a hand overtop of my shoulder. “Of course I do! I am not trying to hit on you or anything. I just love to dance. I’m sorry. And now I’m talking about Blake and Leslie. She doesn’t have a boyfriend, and Blake doesn’t have a girlfriend, right?”
“Well Blake just got out of a relationship. I don’t think he wants to get into another one anytime soon. Besides, I don’t think Blake needs anyone playing matchmaker for him. He’s pretty good at picking out his own dates. I’m sure.”
Alaina smiled. “You sound like you’re opposed to Blake finding a girlfriend. Why? Do you want him?” She laughed to show she was joking.
I blushed. Why was it that I sensed a bit of seriousness in her joke?
I didn’t have time to think any more on it as Blake and Leslie came back with our drinks.
I noticed that Leslie offered the other seat next to me to Blake. I was glad. I really didn’t want to be smothered between the two girls. I didn’t want another girlfriend right now. All I wanted was some time with Blake. Okay, I’ll admit that sounded gay, but I really didn’t care.
I thanked Blake for my drink. We smiled at each other, toasted, and drank. As my eyes met with Blake’s when we drank our root beers, I knew he and I were going to be very close from that day forward.

When we finished with our drinks, Leslie wanted to dance. I kind of wanted to stay and talk with Chris more, seeing as I hadn’t had much time to yet. The girls had monopolized practically the whole conversation, leaving Chris and I hardly any time to talk to each other. However, I didn’t want to be rude, so I took Leslie’s hand and let her lead me to the dance floor.
As soon as we got to the dance floor, the song changed to a ballad, which was Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved”.
I smiled politely, and put my arms around Leslie‘s waist. She put her arms over my shoulders, and we slow danced.
“I like this song. Do you?” she asked me.
I smiled. “I do love it. I used to perform it all the time.”
Leslie smiled. “Really? Sing it now. I want to hear you.”
I laughed. “Now?”
Leslie grinned, and nodded. “Yes, now. Come on. It will be fun!”
“For you maybe. You’re not the one singing,” I said.
Leslie pouted, and batted her eyelashes. “Pretty please with a cherry on top?”
I smirked. “Well how can I resist that?”
I then began to sing, singing practically into Leslie’s ear so that she could hear me over the sound of the music.
She smiled, and we swayed in time together as I sang practically the whole song to her.
When the song ended, she kissed me on the cheek. “Thanks for that. You sounded really good.”
I smiled, and wanting to be a gentleman, kissed her on the cheek in return. “You’re welcome.” I winked at her.
We then grinned at each other, and began dancing to the new song playing, Gwen Stefani and Akon’s “The Sweet Escape”. I was thankful for the change of pace.
As Leslie and I danced, I looked over to see if Chris and Alaina were dancing with us.
Boy was I surprised to see Chris actually grinding with Alaina! It looked like he was actually enjoying it. It was then that I actually felt jealous. I didn’t like that he was enjoying dancing with her. I especially didn’t like the way he was dancing with her. And the weird thing was I wasn’t jealous of him; I was jealous of Alaina.
B*********C
I had wanted to get up and dance with Blake and Leslie. I thought we could all do a group dance even if it was a slow dance. After all, they slow danced as a group in Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, so why couldn‘t the four of us slow dance together, right?
However, Alaina had other ideas. “Chris, will you stay with me while I finish my drink? My feet kind of hurt. I just want to relax for a moment.”
I nodded. “Sure.” I smiled at her, even though I wasn’t too happy about it.
I watched as Blake and Leslie began to dance, and my stomach instantly dropped when I saw him get so close to her ear that his lips were almost touching it. I wondered what he was telling her.
“Aw! Maybe they have hit it off better than you thought,” Alaina told me. She winked. “I think he is singing to her.”
I looked again. Alaina appeared to be right. My heart sank a little. Maybe Blake did like her. I’ll admit it bothered me. I don’t know why it bothered me so. It just…did. I didn’t have feelings for Leslie whatsoever, but it bothered me that Blake might like her. What I didn’t want to admit was that maybe I had feelings for Blake. I didn’t consider myself gay in the slightest, so I chose to ignore that last thought.
Even so, when I saw them kiss each other on the cheek, I wanted to hurl.
The song changed to the new Gwen Stefani and Akon song, and Alaina had finished her drink, so I extended my hand to her. I smiled. “Care to dance?”
She grinned. “I thought you’d never ask!”
I grinned too, and we both headed out to the dance floor. When we got there, I saw that Blake and Leslie seemed to be having a great time, so I thought that Alaina and I might as well have fun also. I liked Alaina. Sure, she seemed to come on too strong, but she wasn’t interested in me in that way. She was just being fun Alaina. I wasn’t being fair to her, obsessing over Blake. He and I would have plenty of time to hang together later. At least, I hoped we did. Besides, Blake seemed to be having a fun time with Leslie, and he didn’t appear that he wanted to talk to me. That being noted, I turned to Alaina, took her hand, and began to grind with her. Carpe diem.
B*********C
After the song ended, Leslie turned my face to hers with her hand. “What’s wrong?”
I looked at her. “Nothing. Why do you ask?”
“You’ve been staring at Chris all night. You’re starting to freak me out. Maybe it’s not me you want to be dancing with.”
I sighed. “I’m sorry, Leslie. I enjoyed dancing with you tonight very much. I hope we can become good friends. It’s just that tonight I thought that it would be fun to dance all four of us together.”
Leslie smiled. “All four of us, or you and Chris?”
I blushed, and looked down at my feet.
Leslie sighed, and then pulled at my arm. “Come on.”
“What?” I asked.
She responded by pulling me towards Chris and Alaina.
What is she up to? I wondered.
I didn’t have to wonder long, for Leslie pulled me right over to Chris and embarrassed me.
“He has been staring at you all night. He wants to dance with you,” she said to him. She nudged me over to him.
I blushed immensely.
Alaina grinned. “What a coincidence. Chris has been staring at Blake all night. He wants to dance with him.”
I felt my heart jump. Chris wanted to dance with me?
Leslie and Alaina both grinned. They then said something about going to the bathroom, and before I knew it, they had left Chris and I alone together.
Chris and I grinned at each other. Neither one of us knew quite what to say.
I spoke just to break the ice. “So, did you have fun with Alaina?”
Chris smiled. “Yeah. I was a little uncomfortable dancing with her at first, but then I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. She is a nice girl. I wouldn’t want to date her or anything, but she’s a fun friend to have. I decided to just go with the flow and have fun. You were having fun with Leslie, so I thought I might as well have fun too.”
I grinned. So Chris was jealous of me being with Leslie. I was glad I wasn’t the only one who was jealous. That made me feel really good—in more ways than one. I was also glad that he didn’t like Alaina in that way. Yes, I definitely felt good.
B*********C
“Here comes the object of your affection.”
I gave Alaina a weird look. “What are you talking about?”
Alaina smiled knowingly. “You’ve been staring at Blake all night long. I know you want to dance with him.”
I blushed, and turned to look at Alaina. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to seem distant tonight. I like you a lot, and hope we can be great friends. It’s just, I kind of thought all four of us would socialize tonight, and not just you and I.”
Alaina grinned. “More like you wanted it to be just you and Blake. It’s so obvious.” She winked at me.
Before I had time to reply, Leslie came over, towing Blake on her arm. She pushed him over to me. “He has been staring at you all night. He wants to dance with you.”
Alaina grinned. “What a coincidence. Chris has been staring at Blake all night. He wants to dance with him.”
Leslie and Alaina both grinned.
“Go dance a few with him. I have to go to the bathroom anyway,” Alaina said, gently pushing me towards Blake.
Leslie nodded. “Me too. Have fun!” She winked at Blake and I, and then left with Alaina, their arms linked together as they walked off towards the bathrooms together.
Blake and I grinned at each other. Neither one of us knew quite what to say.
Finally, he asked me (in such a way) about dancing with Alaina. I grinned. He seemed a little jealous. That was nice. I liked that he was jealous, and I didn’t even know why. I quickly set him straight though. I didn’t want him to believe anything that wasn’t true.
He smiled when I was done explaining. He seemed really happy, which made me really happy.
I decided to bring up my concern. “I saw you singing to Leslie.”
Blake grinned, and rolled his eyes. “She made me sing. I was stupid enough to open my big mouth and tell her that I used to perform that song. I don‘t like her in that way at all! Trust me. ”
I laughed. “Well I’m sure you sounded good.” I was so relieved that that was all it was and nothing more.
He smiled too. “Thanks.”
Suddenly, 311’s “Love Song” came on. He and I both blushed.
I bravely extended my hand. “What the heck? We’ve been wanting to dance together all night, right?”
Blake grinned, and took my hand. “I guess so,” he said with a nod.
We headed further into the crowd then, and began to dance—ignoring any stares around us. And you know what? Right then, I couldn’t give a crap who was staring at us, because I was finally with Blake.
B*********C
I couldn’t believe I was slow dancing with Chris. But there I was, slow dancing with a guy. But to me, Chris wasn’t just any guy. He was quickly becoming my best friend. We had only just met a few weeks ago, but we had a connection that I had never had with anyone before, let alone another guy.
When the song ended, I was kind of sad. An up-tempo quickly began, and Chris and I reluctantly stepped away from each other.
The girls came over then, and placed their arms around us.
“Are you satisfied?” Leslie asked.
No.
“Sure,” I said with a smile instead. “Thank you.”
Chris smiled too. “It was fun.”
I smiled at him. “Yeah, it was.”
“Well you guys said you wanted to dance all four of us, so let’s dance!” Alaina said, putting her arms up in the air.
We all grinned, and began to dance to No Doubt’s “Hey Baby”. It was turning into a pretty fun night after all.
B*********C
I enjoyed dancing just the four of us, but I still wished I could have had one more dance just Blake and I. I watched Blake almost the whole time we danced with the girls, and I was happy to see him watching me. I didn’t know what was happening between us, but I knew we could both feel it. I didn’t need words to tell me that.
When the song ended, it was getting late, so we all decided just to head in early.
When we got back to the hotel, Blake and I walked the girls to their room. We hugged the girls goodnight, and kissed their cheeks. Once they were in their room, it left us alone to walk back to our rooms.
We paused outside my door. “Well, I had a really fun time tonight. Thanks for the dance,” Blake said to me with the smile that I loved.
I smiled back at him. “Thank you. It was a lot of fun.”
We continued standing there for a moment, and then we gave each other a quick hug and did our handshake. Then, with a goodnight to each other and a wave, we slipped into our own rooms. I slept very well that night. Even so, I wish that Blake and I could have shared a room.
