Julia entered the aircraft with Nigel first. The Take That private jet was a humble but comfy one. Nigel had taken himself and Julia earlier to the airport because he knew he’d get stupid questions from journalists waiting at the airport. The boys would arrive later to ensure that they’d get all the press attention and that the journalists wouldn’t leave their posts to go after Nigel because an Owen or Barlow shot was worth a lot more. Nigel settled in the back nearly hiding himself and immediately asked for “Something with alcohol in it”. Julia looked around curiously, she’d never been on a private jet and she’d never actually had the time to speak with the boys longer than 2 seconds and now she was scheduled on a two hour flight to Amsterdam with Nigel, Take That and their security guys. She picked a seat and opened her notebook and Nigel’s diary. She’d better get some work done before hand, sorting out all the names of the people that worked for the label and who would be in Amsterdam too.
More than 40 minutes later, the boys arrived. All wearing the biggest sunglasses Julia had ever seen accompanied by two enormous black guys.
“Well blow me, Nigel’s taken his PA,” Howard said as he entered the plain and saw Julia sitting there, he shook her hand and sat down. Mark and Jason nodded politely at her but they were obviously involved in an important conversation which they continued after sitting down. Gary was the last one to get on the plane and he looked around and settled in the seat next to Julia. “Hope you don’t mind,” he said, smiling at her. Julia smiled back and told him it was ok. “You’re Nige’s PA aren’t you?” He asked her. When she said yes he gave her an “I know” look and Julia instantly liked him.
She could see why the teenage girls fancied these men, they were handsome, well mannered and well dressed. Where would you find a guy like that these days? She chatted with Gary for a little while about nothing really, just about how hectic their life was and work related things. Julia was amazed that Gary was easy to talk to, he wasn’t arrogant at all, somehow she’d always thought of Gary as being arrogant but he wasn’t in the slightest. He was talking about a restaurant in Amsterdam and what a pity it was that they couldn’t go now because they’d be mobbed by fans.
All the while as Julia was talking with Gary, Nigel was watching her like a bird of prey. He didn’t like it one bit that she got on with him this good so fast. The man was such a flirt, he really needed to get his act together if he wanted to become a serious solo artist, Nigel thought. Nigel still felt pissed off, he’d tried to talk the lads into doing something bigger. Once they’d announced that their final show would be in Holland in a tiny tv-studio, fans from all over the world called and wrote to ask for a goodbye concert, something big. Take That didn’t want to, and Nigel was pissed off about it. He was on edge and tried to slow his racing heart with a fourth gin and tonic.
Howard looked at Nigel and from Nigel to Julia. He smirked, he could see the disapproval on Nigel’s face as he saw Gary chatting away with her. Howard didn’t understand why Nigel was so frantic about the girls, as if he thought they were still virgins! And besides, Gary was just talking to her, Howard knew that Dawn and Gaz were getting on like a house on fire and he was pleased for him. He closed his eyes for a while and imagined the final gig they’d do tomorrow night. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy and he swallowed as once again he felt the lump in his throat.
“How many GT’s d’you reckon he’s had then?” Mark looked at Jason who immediately knew Mark was talking about Nigel.
“God, he’s probably on his third or fourth,” Jason said and looked at Nigel silently for a while. “I hate it when he drinks,” he finally said.
“Yeah, me too,” Mark said, “Is that really Nige’s PA?”
“Who? That girl sitting next to Gaz? Yeah, she is. She’s called Julia, pity Nige doesn’t appreciate women, she’s a looker,” Jason answered.
“I’ve never seen her before, I’ve heard of her yes, but I actually thought she was some sort of imaginary PA Nige made up..” Mark chuckled, “I’ll just go over there and say hi, and piss off Nigel a little more.”
Jason shook his head and he closed his eyes. He knew Mark wasn’t just pissing off Nigel, he was trying to be nice, a classic Owen trademark.
“Hiya!” Bright blue eyes and a big smile was all Julia could see for a moment when Mark squeezed himself between her and Gary. “I’m Mark,” the big smile said. Julia had no choice but to smile back at him and say “Hi Mark, I’m Jules.” She felt right at ease with these guys and that really amazed her. If you’d see them sitting on that plane chatting away you’d never guessed they were famous popstars. As Mark was blabbing away at her on Amsterdam, the same restaurant Gary had been on about and about the great hotel they’d stay at, Julia checked the two remaining lads of Take That. The one with the dreads was Howard, that’s how she’d studied them when she first came to work for Nigel. She hadn’t known squat about Take That let alone their songs. When she got hired the first things she did was buy a Smash Hits and look up the names of the guys; Howard was the one with the dreads, Gary had that funny eye thing going on, Mark was the baby face, Jason was the one with the strong jaw and Robbie was the one with the grin. Of course, she didn’t see a lot of Robbie at all, he left a few weeks after she’d started with Nigel.
Howard was looking violently ill, as if he was about to throw up all over the plane. Mark saw her looking, “He’ll be alright, it’s nerves.”
“Nerves?” Julia asked. “Is he afraid of flying?”
“We do still get the nerves before a gig you know,” Mark said “And with this being our final one…Howard’s having a hard time,” he added softly.
Jason seemed to be asleep, he sure needed it she thought, he had massive bags under his eyes. In his hands he held a book and Julia had to tilt her head a little to see what it was. It was The World According To Garp by John Irving. Julia raised her eyebrows in surprise it didn’t seem like popstar reading material to her but then again what did she know about popstars?

Mrs. Williams looked around her sons apartment. It seemed like a bomb had gone off in the living room. Clothes, bottles of Vodka, beer and coca-cola were scattered across the room. Empty cigarette packets lay crushed on top of full ashtrays and the smell in the room was awful. Like somebody left there trainers they’d worn for two weeks straight in there.
It was two in the afternoon and Robbie was still in bed. He’d again gone out the night before with Noel and Liam. Mrs. Williams hated them, they were nasty and had big mouths and no manners. Silently she started cleaning up the house and ignored the silver packages that lay around in the bathroom and on top of the TV.

James and Paul, Take That’s huge security guys, were scanning the area behind the gate. Their plane had landed some ten minutes ago and James, Paul, Nigel and Julia were already at the baggage belts, the lads stayed behind until James gave the go ahead sign and somebody from the airport would escort the guys to the gate where James and Paul would meet up with them and guide them to their van.
Julia’s jaw dropped as she picked up her bag from the conveyor belt, the exit gate and the baggage claim was divided by a huge thick glass wall. People could see the arrivals waiting for their luggage and might spot their family, friend or whoever it was they were collecting from the airport. Today, hundreds of girls with camera’s and drawn on faces were standing outside the gate. They were the fans.
Some of the girls had spotted James and Paul and had recognised them. Julia could see them screaming and banging against the glass wall but it was that thick, she didn’t hear any of it.
“Will this be safe?”, she asked James.
“I dunno,” he replied looking frowned and doing a quick count of the girls.
“There’s at least 500 of them,” Paul said.
“Right, we can do that. If the airport staff is here we are ready to go. Jules, have you got your luggage?” James asked.
“Yeah, I got it, but what am I…”
“Listen to me ok, when we get out of the gate it’ll be a frenzy. All of those girls will jump you. Me and Paul will take Mark and Gary, and d’you see those big guys standing outside the gate with the suits on?”
“Yes,” Julia replied.
“They’re with us too. As soon as Howard and Jason are out of the gate, they will guide How and Jase. Follow them! Do not stop, do not answer any questions of the girls and do not attempt to look for Nigel, ‘coz he’s already gone. Keep an eye out for us yeah, d’you understand?”
Julia nodded and looked at the girls, she swallowed and decided that she was not the kind of person who would enjoy a lifetime of fame.
“It’ll be fine!” James laughed.
“Right, here we go lads,” Paul started walking towards the gate doors as Take That came walking towards the baggage belts. The girls immediately spotted them and a wave of screams sounded throughout the airport. Paul grabbed Mark by his arm and James locked his arms in the arms of Gary. Howard and Jason stayed back just a few meters.
When the doors opened Julia thought she’d have a panic attack. The whole airport seemed to swallow her and she tried to push her way through the girls without falling over or hurting anyone.
“Jules!” she heard Paul scream from somewhere. “Go for the revolving doors! And be careful!”. Julia looked around and saw the revolving doors at the exit of the airport. It seemed to be impossible to reach but the crowd was moving fast now too.
“Paul!” she screamed trying to see where he was going as she felt a little nudge in her back. “Take my hand, come on!”. A thin, blonde woman grabbed her hand and quickly got her outside and on her way to the van that was ready to whisk the boys to the hotel. She got in the van and saw that Take That, Paul and James already were inside. The doors closed and the van speeded away from the airport and Julia didn’t even have time to see who the woman was that helped her.
“Wow…I cannot believe you guys survive that every day!”
They all laughed.
