Gerard flashed a wide smile, “Hello Lizzi,” he said in a soft and sultry tone. “As I’ve said, I’m Gerard, this here is my brother Mikey, that’s Ray and that’s Bob,” he said introducing the group.
I gave a nod, “Uh, hi.”
“She kind of looks like her, doesn’t she?” Ray said to Bob and Mikey.
“Obviously,” Mikey said in a bored tone.
“So, what’s this about?” I asked, raising a brow, as Frank and Jamia stood by me protectively.
“Destiny,” Gerard smiled. For some reason, the way he said destiny made my blood run cold and sent a shiver down my spine.
“Look, it’s late,” Jamia said, noticing my uneasiness. “I think you should get going now,” she said in a motherly tone. “You can come back tomorrow if you’d like...”
Gerard gave her a smile, but I saw something dangerous in his eyes, “No can do, we need to speak to her tonight...”
“Hey, listen pal,” Frank growled. “It’s not the time for games, now please leave...”
“No,” I croaked, “it’s fine...” I had an inexplicable feeling that not talking to them, and trying to push them out of the house could be a very fatal mistake.
“Are you sure?” Jamia asked, sensing the hesitation in my voice. I gave a slight nod, keeping my eyes fixed on Gerard. He sent Jamia a death glare, only caught by me.
Your friend there is going to ruin everything, Lizzi... I heard him say, though his lips hadn’t moved. He slowly looked over at me and flashed me a smile, as if to confirm that he’d really “said” that, in some way. “Tsk, you look like you’ve seen a ghost, Lizzi, you alright?” he asked out loud.
This has to be a dream, I thought, trying to wake myself up.
It’s not a dream... Gerard smiled at me again.
“W-what do you have to tell me?” I asked, fear dripping off of every word.
“I think it’s best I tell you, alone,” he said softly.
“There’s no fucking way you’re taking her off alone,” Frank glared. “I don’t trust you one bit,” he growled.
“Well then, you can come as well... But that’s it, Jamia stays here,” Gerard said to Frank. “She’s not a part of this...”
“How did you...” Jamia started but ended abruptly, giving a shocked look to Gerard.
“Fine,” Frank said, taking my hand protectively. “Baby, wait here, we’ll be right back...” he said to Jamia, who simply nodded.
“Let’s take a walk,” Gerard smiled, moving toward the door.
“Wait,” I said suddenly, causing Gerard too turn and look at me. “I don’t want them,” I said motioning to the others, “in the house alone with Jamia... Get them out...”
Gerard nodded, “Whatever you want, Lizzi...” He then motioned for the others to follow. Once outside he instructed them, “Go back to Lizzi’s house and wait for us... We’ll be along soon.”
Frank put an arm around my shoulder as I gave a shiver. I leaned close to him, “I don’t like this,” I whispered softly.
“Me either,” he replied, just as soft. “Don’t worry though, I’ve got you.”
I nodded and we continued to follow Gerard down the dimly lit sidewalk. Everyone had retired from any trick-or-treating rituals, being that it was so late. We finally stopped after what felt like an eternity, in front of the gates of the old Forestdale Cemetery... This cemetery had always freaked me out as a kid, and it still did... At least at the moment.
Gerard turned to face me, leaning on the gate and lighting a cigarette. He took a long drag before exhaling the smoke casually, “Elizabeth Báthory... Nice name, were you named after anyone?”
“No,” I said with a shrug.
“Ah... That’s where you are wrong,” he smiled with a wink. “You were named after my mother... Well, my metaphorical mother...”
“That’s nice, we’re leaving now,” Frank said with a glare, his arm tightly around me.
“You shut up, if it wasn’t for the part you’re playing in all of this, I wouldn’t think twice before having you well taken care of,” Gerard spat with disdain before looking at me with another smile, “besides... Lizzi wants to listen to me.”
Don’t you? he “asked” in a cold tone.
“Yeah,” I said, feeling sick. “L-let him talk Frank...”
“She’ll say anything at this point to keep you from murdering us, you fucking psycho stalker,” Frank growled. “If you had half a brain, you’d know she’s terrified of you for some reason.”
Gerard took a deep breath, looking at Frank with an icy expression, “I’m growing tired of you, boy,” he muttered. He closed his eyes for a second, taking another drag on his cigarette before exhaling once more, “Now, back to my story... Lizzi, do you know who Elizabeth Báthory was?”
I shook my head, “No,” I squeaked.
“She was your great-great-great, and so on, grandmother. A countess of what is now Slovakia. She was born on August 7th, 1560 and lived until 1614...” Gerard started, he then went on to tell me her life story and about how she’d drink and bath in the blood of the girls she’d torture. “...And you’re named after her,” he said, taking his last drag before flicking his cigarette into the cemetery, “isn’t that cool?”
“N-no,” I said, in what came out as no more than a whisper.
“You also share the same birthday as her... Do you know what that means?” he asked, I shook my head. “You’re the one...”
“We need to leave... now!” Frank said in his protective tone once again.
“You just wait,” Gerard growled. “I’m not finished yet,” he smiled, “you’re being rude.”
“What do you mean, the one?” I asked, raising a brow as my heart kept racing with fear.
Gerard looked over at me and smiled, sticking his tongue out at Frank, “The one, the leader among our kind,” he smiled. “You see, your grandmother was put under house arrest after the king found out what she was doing... She was far too powerful to be put to death, but once she couldn’t get adequate blood, she deteriorated... She needed the blood to survive. On her deathbed, she promised me that one day, an heir would return to reclaim her place as the leader of our kind... You’re that heir...”
“Your kind?” I heard myself squeak.
“Vampires...” he said in a cold voice that rang in my ears... The word playing over in my mind.
“Vampires? Yeah, real nice, Happy Halloween dude,” Frank spat. “Come on, Lizzi, let’s go.”
I nodded and Frank and I turned from Gerard and began walking toward my house. A second later I bumped into someone... Gerard.
“What the fuck is going on?” Frank asked, looking a bit spooked himself.
“Ask your mother, Lizzi, she’ll confirm everything I’ve just said...” Gerard smiled slyly.
