TABULA RASA: Chapter TWO
Announcement: Ok, so apparently I’m going to attempt Chapter Two. Most of this is coming out of my butt so it’s probably still absolutely horrid. You’ve been warned. If you have ideas, I want them. NOW. No really, my muse is screaming and dying. If it especially refers to your desired Eden character just let me know and I’ll work it in the best I can. Yes, it’s a little bit like The Village but not really. And Rosie’s me, and Caroline is a friend of ours.
Rosie had never seen such an interesting collection of people come through their woods before. She could have sworn she recognized a few but she could never be sure. She had seen lots of faces from her pictures and things. But now they were so close, three of them in the woods and an RV nearby. She raised an eyebrow quizzically as she watched it. This would certainly be a story worth writing down if they were real strangers who needed their help. HER help. Maybe they were famous. She could only hope.
She peered curiously from between the tree limbs and came a little closer. Maybe too close. She made a quick little noise and rushed back into the shadows. She could have cursed her hair out loud for being as bright as it was. The sun was setting slowly, the shadows and light of it brushing across the woods as it created a kind of strange, golden glow about the setting.
She saw one of the strangers look her way and gasped a little, clapping her hand onto her mouth just in case she gave herself away from her own excitement. She could clearly see a girl and two boys in the distance who seemed a little too giggly for her taste. And they were playing around with a flash light. She wasn’t exactly sure what they were trying to do but they seemed to be enjoying it.
She listened in carefully, leaning against a tree. She was trying to catch a few words when she heard someone else nearby and nearly shouted aloud. Then she realized it was only her friend Caroline who had come out to follow her. She admitted to having been a little mysterious about just going off like she did with no real explanation. But the way she saw it it always made things a little more interesting if she just didn’t tell even for the simplest things. She hadn’t expected to see any strangers at all when she went about her daily exploration in the woods but it was a pleasant surprise that even shocked Caroline who almost began to giggle with a newfound excitement.
“Is this why you rushed out? Did you know they were coming? Who are they?” Caroline asked, playing a little with her long blond hair nervously. “Do you know? Have they seen you?”
“Shh…I don’t know. They’re awfully funny looking, don’t you think?” Rosie said with a grin and watched them from behind the tree. They were coming closer and she could plainly hear their laughter now.
“I don’t think so. Do you like their clothes? I think they’re nice, really strange though. Nobody around here wears things like that. It’s all so black…” Caroline added curiously, her blue eyes dark with concentration. “And I don’t know but I think I like it. But we don’t have any black. Do we? The others would be thinking we were going on a funeral though. It wouldn’t be nice to worry them if no one’s really died. Don’t you think?”
“Come on, Caroline. Do you think we should talk to them? It looks like they’re looking for something. I don’t know what though. Maybe they could be in trouble. Nobody ever comes to the woods out here you know. This could be a big occasion. Nobody ever expects visitors and we could be the first to bring them in years.” Rosie said brightly, her eyes wild with ideas. “Maybe they could stay with us. Do you think Mum and Dad would allow it?”
Caroline was smiling too, glad her sister had thought of the idea. “That would be wonderful. I can’t remember the last guests we’ve had. And we could be responsible for a good meal too. It’d be perfect, Caroline. Come on, let’s go.”
Before Caroline could even say anything, Rosie had jumped out from the trees a little too quickly. “Hello?” She asked the newcomers who were all giving her strange looks. She frowned a little but tried to stay friendly though she must look strange to them in their nice clothes and exciting hair.
“Sorry..I didn’t mean to frighten you. Are you looking for someone? Lost? These woods can be scary..I mean. I didn’t mean that.” She stuttered, eyes wide as she realized she was getting excited and rambling as she often did. And the prospect of visitors only elevated that. Thankfully, Caroline stepped in to help her. Her sister had always been of more eloquent tongue and at times like these she could use all the help she could get.
“My sister means she hopes you aren’t lost and that we haven’t been bothering you. We mean no harm just being out here like we are. You see not much happens around here and visitors of your kind are never much expected. Did you need something from us? We’re sure we could help with anything we can.” Caroline said, smiling still to the strange looks she was getting from the girl and the two boys.
“Well..yeah we are lost.” Said one of the boys who stepped forward. He was scrawny, tallish and seemed a little protective of the girl who was with them. “And maybe you could help us but we might have to take you back with the rest of our group just in case since it’s getting dark.”
“Always the thoughtful one, Butcher. I’m sure the others wouldn’t mind getting help. Brendon’s probably fallen on his face a few times by now just trying to fix that tire. He should be amusing and we could all use some comic relief. Well, let’s go already.” Jade said, looking back at the two new girls suspiciously. Something just didn’t add up about all of it and she didn’t know what it was. Maybe Tuesday would.
