In mid-September is when fall would make it known that it was on its way, and the city in snow was the most beautiful scene. However, she was sick of Brooklyn. She was sick of living in the city, she was sick of having to raise her children in the city and in such a cramp apartment. She was sick and tired of it that she wanted to move to a nice neighborhood where she didn’t have to worry about one of her daughters being snatched into an alley way and raped. She wanted to leave and her husband agreed with her; only so their children could be raised better and have a chance at life. Not screw around and end up like they did.
Rachael Bryar snuggled into her pillow, looking at the wall in her bedroom that hung a picture of three little girls. Rachael smiled as she felt a strong arm wrap around her waist, pulling her closer and eventually her back was pressed against his chest and his nose nuzzling into her pixie-like hair.
“Good morning there gorgeous,” Bob said as he kissed Rachael’s neck and she giggled.
“Today is going to be a busy day,” Rachael stated as she wiggled closer to Bob and he chuckled softly.
“Yes it will be…”
“NIKKI! GET THE FUCK OUT MY ROOM!”
“GIVE ME THE FLAT IRON FIRST!”
“And it starts with those two,” Bob mumbled as he rolled onto his back and let out a big sigh.
Rachael shook her head as she sat up, pulling the covers off and walked to the door of her bedroom. She could hear the two bickering at one another, then a loud thud – “OW! What the hell was that for?!”
She made it to the bedroom, the door wide open as her youngest and smallest daughter rubbed her hip and winced from the pain. “What happened?” Rachael asked as Nicole looked at her and pointed to her older sister.
“Jenni threw the flat iron at me!” Nicole yelped, bending down to pick up the discarded flat iron.
Rachael looked over at Jenni, who was hiding under the dark covers of her bed and mumbling something about not getting enough sleep. “Jenni, get up you have school.”
“I’m not going,” Jenni mumbled as she snuggled deeper into the covers and Rachael shook her head as she walked over to the bed, ripping the covers off of Jenni.
“Mum!” Jenni yelled as she sat up, trying to reach for the covers but Rachael threw them on the floor where Nicole had once stood, the girl running off to the bathroom to tend to her hair. “This isn’t fair…”
“Throwing the flat iron at your sister isn’t fair, now get ready for school. Breakfast will be done in 30 minutes.” Rachael ordered as she walked to the door and looked back at Jenni who was still sitting on the bed. “I mean it young lady, now.”
Jenni let out a frustrated growl as she got up, stomping to the door and slamming it shut as Rachael walked away to the kitchen to start breakfast. Eggs and bacon sounded enough for today, so Rachael pulled all the ingredients out and started breakfast. As soon as it was done, Nicole came bouncing in with her book bag hanging off her shoulder and her dark brown hair straighter then ever.
“Morning mummy,” Nicole said as she kissed her mother’s cheek and placed her bag on the floor, taking a seat at the table and attacked the plate of food in front of her.
“Is Alex up?” Rachael asked and before Nicole could reply a dirty blonde entered the room.
Alex rubbed her light brown eyes, scanning the room before she sat beside Nikki at the table and looked over breakfast. “Morning mummy,” Alex said before she picked up her fork and stabbed them into the eggs.
“Two down, one more to go.” Bob declared as he walked into the kitchen and kissed Rachael. “What were they fighting about this time?”
“The flat iron,” Rachael mumbled as Bob looked over Nicole who was chewing on a piece of bacon.
“Did you ask or barge into the room Nikki?”
“It should be in the bathroom, not in her room. It’s not my fault that Jenni takes things that don’t belong to her,” Nikki stated as she pointed her bacon at her father, her blue eyes dancing along his face. “What?”
“You know better, you’re 14-years-old already.” Bob stated as he grabbed a mug from the cabinet and poured himself a cup of coffee.
“Thank you, I’m glad someone agrees with me.” Jenni said, making it clear she was there as she walked into the room and took a seat across from Nikki, who was munching away on her bacon happily. “Wipe that smile off your face…”
“Stop being a bitch and maybe we can compromise-”
“Hey! Now that I will not allow in my house.” Rachael snapped, Bob staring down at Nikki who shrugged her shoulders and scooped some eggs into her mouth. “You’re sisters, you should be getting along and not fighting.”
“Tell her to stop being immature,” Jenni stated as her brown eyes glared at Nikki, who simply raised an eyebrow.
“Enough already,” Bob said sternly, causing all the girls to quiet down – even Alex who was enjoying the argument between the two. “The both of you are in high school and need to cut it out with this shit already. Your mother and I have a busy day and the last thing we need is a phone call from Alex telling us you two are attempting to kill one another… again.”
“You’re not honestly going to go house shopping are you?” Jenni inquired, blowing at some of her bangs and looked over her parents.
“I like it here…” Alex added in, looking up from her breakfast.
“Oh come on you three, you’ll have a bigger room.” Rachael stated as she took a seat at the table. “Alex you won’t have to share a room anymore with Nikki…”
“But all our friends are here,” Nikki interjected. “We grew up here.”
“Plus… New Jersey sucks,” Jenni stated causing her two younger sisters to laugh.
“We’re going house shopping,” Bob said, making it clear this was something that was going to happen. “We’ll be home late, Jenni you’re in charge. Make sure they eat and do their homework.”
No one argued, no one complained. The girls finished their breakfast in silence, bidding their parents good-bye when breakfast was done and started the walk to school.
“They’re making us move cause of the parties we go too,” Alex stated, tugging on the ponytail she pulled her hair into. “Coming home late… and that one time Jenni came home high and drunk.”
“Not like any of you ever got drunk,” Jenni said sarcastically as she rolled her eyes. Pulling her iPod from her pocket and plugged the headphones into her ear.
“It was only once,” Alex bit back. “And I didn’t get caught.”
“Why can’t you just have fun dancing?” Nikki asked innocently, looking up at her sisters as they walked to school.
Jenni looked at her iPod, playing with the circle as she scrolled down looking for a song to listen too. “Because dancing high is more fun,” Jenni replied as she pushed play and drowned out the rest of world for the rest of the walk home.

The shadows of tall trees danced along the car as it drove down the road, Bob trying his best to look around the place as he drove looking for the house that was for sale. Rachael was staring out the window, watching as kids ran out onto their lawn playing with balls, jump ropes, and hula-hoops. A small smile crept on her face, her kids might have been too big now to play those games but they could run around the around doing something active. She looked over the houses, one after the other and they all looked so different. So unique in its own way.
“Oh wow,” Bob said as they pulled up to the house they were planning to look at for the day. It was a long trip but now looking over the house, it seemed so worth it.
“Oh… it’s stunning.” Rachael said as she unbuckled herself, opening the door to the car and got out to look at the house better.
The white paneling held no dirt what so ever and the windows were decorated with dark blue shutters. Shrubs decorated the front of the white wood porch, a small simple wooden porch swing hung off to the right side of the porch and the windows looked like they brought enough light into the house. Bob got out of the car, standing by his wife.
“Unbelievable,” Rachael said as she scanned over it. “Not a damage in sight.”
“We’ll decide that when we get inside and look around,” Bob stated as he caught the saleswoman who would be giving them a tour of the house.
“Look at that door Bob,” Rachael as she pointed the door and at the same time she wrapped her hand around his arm. “It’s red.”
Bob gave a nod; acknowledging Rachael as he moved towards the saleswoman who had her car parked in the driveway and in front of the two-car garage. The woman smiled, looking middle-aged and her red hair was streaked with silver – all pulled into a tight, neat bun.
“Hello there, you must be the Bryars.” She said with a smile and held out her hand. “Sally Amons, I’ll be giving you the tour of the house today.”
“Bob, and this is my wife Rach.” Bob introduced them as he shook Sally’s hand, who then moved over to shake Rachael’s hand.
“Nice to meet you,” Rachael said and Sally’s smile grew wider.
“From England?” Sally asked, picking up Rachael’s English accent.
Rachael simply nodded as Sally smiled some more and looked over the couple. “Let’s get this tour started shall we?”
Sally took stride steps towards the house, following the concrete sidewalk that lead to the house. For the season the grass was perfectly green and beautiful flowers were in the shrubs by the sidewalk. Bob and Rachael took it all in as they walked up the porch steps, Sally opening the door with ease and walked right in.
Rachael took in a sharp breath as she entered the house; it wasn’t something so grand but something much more larger then the apartment back in New York. It was a small little hall that opened into the living room; to the left of the small hall was an entry to the kitchen. Rachael stepped into the living room, looking to the left of the room where the dining room was and had a second entryway to the kitchen.
To the far right of the room was the stairs and the door to the basement was right under the stairs. Rachael smiled, looking over at Bob who was emerging from the kitchen.
“It’s bigger then the one back home,” Bob stated as he pointed to the kitchen.
“The bedrooms are upstairs, there’s four of them. You have the master bedroom, and the three extra.” Sally said as she started up the stairs and the couple followed behind. The hall was a bit long and made a turn at the end where it lead to the master bedroom and one of the extra bedrooms.
Rachael walked into the master bedroom, adoring the view of the backyard she got and stared at the oak tree; a tire swing hanging off the branch and swung slightly from the blow of the wind. Rachael could see the entrance to the bathroom for this room, this room had its own bathroom. She wouldn’t have to share with the girls anymore and they would stop trying to use Bob’s razor to shave their legs. Bob walked in, looking over the room and made a whistle. “This is-”
“Perfect,” Rachael said as she walked to the window, a perfect view of the backyard came in sight. “Look,” she pointed out, her finger directing towards the large oak tree in the back. “It has a tire swing.”
Bob stood by her, looking out the window. “Nikki would love that.”
Rachael looked at Bob, her eyes bright. “I love it.”
Bob smiled at her, “It’s… a little more than we can afford.”
Rachael frowned a little, turning to face her husband and wrapped her arms around his waist. “It’s not too much baby, and if we work hard enough we can live here happily. Comfortably, we’ll just have to sacrifice a few things. We’ve done it before; I know we can do it again.” Rach said, placing her chin on Bob’s chest and gazing up at him. “Come on baby, we can do this.”
Bob sighed, running a hand through the blonde dyed pixie-like hair of his wife. A small smile splashed across her lips, and he had to look out the window to make sure was based on what was best and not the sparkle in Rach’s eyes. Rach nuzzled her cheek into his chest, taking in the scent of cologne she’d grown to love and waited for Bob to reply to her.
“There’s going to be major sacrifice, you know that right?” Bob stated, looking down as Rach moved a little to look up at him.
“Of course I do darling, we’re in this together. You jump, I jump remember?” Rach replied, Bob smirking at her slightly as he leaned down a little to place a kiss on her lips.
“Alright,” Bob said with a smile as Rach squealed and jumped on Bob, wrapping her arms around his neck and kicked her legs back. Bob wrapped his arms around her waist, laughing as she wiggled her legs happily and smiled the biggest smile in history.
“I see someone enjoys the house?” Sally interrupted, standing by the threshold and Bob set Rach down. “So what do we think?”
“We love it,” Rach said happily.
“We’ll take it.”
