“ Scarlett LonVouge, please report to the principles office. Scarlett LonVouge please report to the principles office, immediately.” the old intercom projected loudly through the class room, and the rest of the school.
I could feel the stares, as I tried to hide my face deeper in my text book, and I could hear the whispers.
I closed my eyes and took a breath. I knew why I was going to the office and so did the rest of Saint Mary’s Catholic Highschool, including the teachers.
“ Scarlett. “ Sister Ann snapped.
I looked up for the first time, her eyes of judgement scanning my face.
“Go to the office now.” her voice was cold and disgusted.
“ But can’t I finish taking my notes ?” I asked quietly.
“ No.” she spat. “ Take your things. “ she looked at me one last time and shook her head shamefully.
I closed my book gently and placed it in my bag. I could feel the moisture in my eyes building. It wasn’t fair. I was treated like a disease, for something that wasn’t even true. My ‘friends’ abandoned me, my teachers were disgraced. I would walk down the halls and get glares and whispers of hateful gossip. It wasn’t fair. But no one believed me, or cared to hear it.
I got up and walked down the aisles of desks. The whole class was staring at me as I wobbled down the rows to await my fate. My head was spinning, and I was getting hot. Snickers and giggles filled the room. A few “ohhs. “ and “ ahhs “ also.
I looked up to see that Sister Ann was looking down at her paper, and she had no intentions of silencing the class. I looked down at the floor as I continued my walk of shame, clenching my teeth tightly. I was passing the last desk when I heard the girl sitting there speak.
“ Aww, look she’s crying. “ she teased hurtfully.
I brought one hand up to my cheek and sure enough it was wet with the salty liquid. I was going to kept whatever dignity I had left, so I kept my pace even and unshaken, but in reality I was trying so hard not to run the rest of the distance sobbing.
*****
I stopped at the office door and exhaled, I had no idea how bad it was actually going to be.
I opened the door and froze when I saw my father and mother in the room, my mother was weeping.
“ Hello Scarlett, have a seat. “ Principle Smith said directing me to a chair next to my mother. I noticed the school shrink in the corner, analyzing my every move.
I obeyed without any discussion, or even glancing at my parents.
“ Scarlett, we would all like to talk to you about something. But before we do, would you like to say something ? “
What was the point they would never believe me, I was alone.
I shook my head not sure if I was able to talk.
He sighed in disappointment. “ You know the lord doesn’t like lairs Scarlett. So I’m just going to get straight to the point and ask you. “
I gulped, stilling looking at the ground.
My mothers uneven breathing was in my ear.
“ Did you and your classmate Riley Prescott have any sexual relations. “ it wasn’t a question.
“ No. “ I whispered, the tears coming down harder.
“ This is a Catholic Highschool, young lady. And that kind of behavior is unacceptable.” He scolded.
“ I said I didn’t.” I defended truthfully.
“ Stop lying, and shut your mouth. That’s what got you in trouble in the first place ! “ my father spat at me.
I stopped breathing, I couldn’t believe it. “ He’s lying ! Not me ! “ I pleaded.
Principle Smith turned and spoke to my dad. “ This kind of behavior we can’t allow in this school, you understand. And Riley is a star athlete and has the highest grades in the class. Not to mention the amounts of money his family has donated to our school programs. “
My father nodded, agreeing.
“ I didn’t do anything ! “ I interrupted.
He sighed impatiently.
“ Scarlett, enough ! “ my father growled.
“ Mom, you have to believe me. “ I pleaded.
She looked up at, me her blood shot eyes were torn.
“ We were at a party and..., he wanted to. But I said no and he got mad, so he spread those rumors ! I’m telling you the truth ! Please believe me ! “ I begged sobbing.
They had already made up their minds about me.
“ Please. “ I whispered unhopefully.
My mother looked away, and my heart broke.
“ What are our alternatives ? “ My father asked ignoring my outburst.
“ Well, as you expect, some of the parents are outraged. And her teachers.... are disappointed to say the least. So, Mr Cahilan . What do you suggest ? “ Mr. Smith turned to the shrink.
“ Well, I think that the best place, right now, for you Scarlett. Is to just get away. You need some time to think about your actions and the fact that they all have consequences. “ he said stepping closer, talking to me as if I were a four year old.
“ Her grandmother lives in Jersey. “ My father offered.
“ John, you can’t be serious ! That’s on the other side of the country ! “ my mother finally spoke.
“ I’m not going to Jersey ! Especially for something I didn’t do ! You can’t make me ! I won’t, I won’t ! “ I screamed. The horror of that moment. New Jersey ??? With my 60 year old crazy artist grandmother ! In New Jersey ! I’ve never ever been out of Kansas ! Not to mention the weather ! Rain, snow, sunny, not sunny, I wouldn’t be able to keep up with it.
“ Actually, I think that would be the best place for her now. “ the quack said.
Mr. Smith nodded in agreement, “ I don’t know what went wrong.... she was a good student, highly liked by all of her teacher...” he said acting like I wasn’t even in the room.
“ Neither do I. “ my father said coldly. “ So it is settled. “
“ What ? No ! You can’t just ship me away ! “ I cried hopelessly.
“ Enough ! I’ve had it with you. You’ve caused this family enough embarrassment. Your 17 you have no say. “ my father stated.
“ I know a good public school down there that will take her.” Mr. Smith offered.
“ I’ve never even kissed a boy, how could you just believe that ? “ I whispered.
“ Scarlett, just calm down. Every thing is going to be alright. “ Mr Cahilan spoke softly.
“ Mom. “ I begged.
“ I’m sorry sweetie. But it’s what’s best for you. “ she tried to explain.
I sat there still, and silent. I was always close with my mother. And the fact that she would just let them do this to me, was an unbearable hurtful feeling. I didn’t understand. She always was on my side. She was always there for me. I would never forgive her for this. I stopped listening as they continued to talk about plans to get me out of the state as soon as possible. I heard the phrase ‘the quieter the better ‘.
I was surprised at how calm I was. Maybe cause I thought it was just all a dream. It seemed like something out of a movie on the Lifetime channel. Hopefully I would wake up soon.

“ Now take care of your grandmother. “ my father warned handing me my suitcase.
I nodded. I hadn’t spoken more than two words to them since.
They started to board my flight, “ Bye. “ I said flatly.
My father nodded, and wave gently. He headed for the exit. He didn’t care, as long as the neighbors didn’t gossip.
My mother stayed in her place. “ Lettie, “ she used my nick name. I hated the name Scarlett, it sounded so formal. “ Please, forgive me. But it’s what’s best, really. “
“ You don’t believe me. “ I whispered, looking down at my shoes.
“ I do.” she replied.
I gave her a confused expression.
“ Living there will be better for you. You don’t want these types of people in your life....... Lettie try to understand. You’re a wonderful, sweet, beautiful girl. I’ve never even heard you swear. You have an amazing mind and I don’t want them brain washing you, into being ‘perfect’. Try to grasp that I’m doing this because I know it will be better, I don’t want you to end up like me..... I don’t ever want you to change. This is what’s best Lettie, maybe you don’t see it now, but in the long run you’ll understand why I’m letting you go.”
I was staggered by this confession, I couldn’t speak, a hundred different emotions ran through my mind and the only words I could choke out were “ I love you.”
“ Goodbye, my sweet Lettie. “ and she was gone.
******
The plane ride was better than I expected. There was an empty seat next to me so no one would be able to strike up an awkward conversation.
‘ Welcome to Hopewell New Jersey.’ A sign said as I walked over to the baggage claim, once I had it I walked out side and stood by the entrance waiting for my grandmother, as directed. I’ve never even heard of Hopewell. I was caught off guard by the weather, it was cold. I wrapped my arms around my side for warmth.
“ Lettie ! “ I heard my grandmothers voice. She was just as hyper as I remembered.
I turned around to see her, she looked exactly like my mother. “ Hi Gran. “ I gave her an awkward hug.
“ I can’t believe you lived in Kansas, I’m tanner than you. Your as white as a ghost. Is Kansas really sunny ? ” She held out her arm to compare our skin. She was right, I was really pale.
“ I guess....The sun doesn’t like me. “ I shrugged.
We put my suitcase in the trunk of the car, and started to drive to my new ‘home’.
“ I’m glad your hear Lettie, I’ve missed you. “
I just nodded.
“ Are you going to miss your friends ? “
“ I really didn’t have that many friends. “ I said with ease, I was a loner, and I liked it that way.
“ I just happy your away from those people. Do you want to talk about it ? “ she asked
“ No. “ I whispered as I looked out the window to see my new surroundings. I suddenly became confused as I continued to look out the window. It wasn’t what I expected. I saw decent sized houses, fields, and just a few stores. I also saw patches of woodsy areas. I always knew of Jersey as a city, like New York or something.
“ This is Jersey ? “ I asked skeptical.
She chuckled “ Not all parts of Jersey is city, Hopewell is in the rural part of Jersey. “
“Oh.”
“ You start school tomorrow. “ she said trying to change the subject.
“ Do you have my uniform ? “ I sighed. I hate school, no I hate people.
She giggled. “ It’s a public school, Lettie, you wear what you want. “ I was shocked all my life I had wore uniforms to school, I became uneasy realizing that I had to pick out a ‘first day outfit’ on my own.
“ Yup, no uniforms, no religion class, no nuns, no priest. Just a school “ she said realizing my shock. “ And most importantly no one telling you what to believe in. I was always against you going to Catholic schools. I mean your mother had no choice, I mean you know your father...”
I sighed at the mentioning of my father. “ That sounds nice I guess. “ and I realized we had stopped.
It was a nice small house. A pale yellow color, with a nice wrap around porch, the swing caught my eye. It was on a decent size of land, just like the rest of the houses I saw. We entered and I set my suitcase down happily. The house was warm and inviting. There was a living room and kitchen on the first floor. And the second floor had two bedrooms and a bathroom.
“ Is this my room ? “ I asked pointing to the plain room.
“ Yup you can decorate your self.” she said as we entered it. It was a decent size. The walls were a light purple, There was a large panel window, and the head of my queen size bed was under it. The curtains were a darker shade of purple to match the flower bed sheets. There was also a bureau against the wall opposite to the bed.
“ No, I like it. “ I admitted.
“ You don’t talk much do you ? “ she smiled.
“ I think a lot . “
She laughed. “ Maybe it’s just because I talk a lot. Or maybe it’s because I haven’t seen you since you were 9 years old. You were talkative at the age of nine, I remember. “
I giggled and walked over to the bed. I gently laid down on my stomach.
“ You still dance, right ? “
I nodded. I have been a ballerina since the age of 8.
“ Well if you want there is a nice dance studio, I’ll give you the address and you can check it out.” she offered.
“ Thanks. “ I said and closed my eyes.
“ It’s going to be ok Lettie, I can feel it. I’ll be downstairs painting if you need me.”
I waited till I heard the door close, pulled my knees to my chest, rolling over to my side. And then the tears came.
***********
I woke up early than I would have for school. I just wanted to make sure I knew where all of my classes were. I kept things simple wearing light blue jeans, and a white shirt. My long light brown hair I just put up in a sloppy bun, with pieces falling down. I walked down to the kitchen to see that Gran had already left. There was a note on the table :
Lettie Bettie Confettie ,
I got a ride from Karen this morning so you can take the car. Have a nice first day.
Gran
And attached to it were directions to the school.
I laughed, there was no way I was driving. I was a HORRIBLE driver. My driving teacher was an idiot to pass me. I was no way going to risk the innocent lives of the Hopewell citizens. So I figured if I started to walk now, I would make it there just in time. I grabbed my black sweater and headed out the door, the directions in my hands.
Outside the sky was a bright light gray. You could feel the cool moisture in the air. I made it to the school easily and safely. I couldn’t say the same if I were driving. The school it self had to be the biggest building in Hopewell I saw so far, and it wasn’t even that big.
There were kids hanging outside the building waiting for their classes to start. And as I got closer to the main entrance I could feel the stares. It seemed like a tight knit school. Everybody knew everybody, so to see this knew face in the crowd made them curious. And it didn’t help that it was 3 months into the school year.
I fought my way threw the crowd silently, making sure not to make eyes contact and reached the front entrance. I walked in the building and made my way to the front desk.
“ Hello. I new here-“ I started to say to the woman behind the counter.
“ Ahh, Yes Scarlett. “ she finished, searching through her piles of paper, handing me one.
“ This is your list of classes, we’re going to start you off with the easy classes this week to see where you stand academical. Then next week, we will move you to the appropriate classes permanently. “ she explained.
“ Alright. “
“ Now, do you need any help finding your classes ? “ she asked.
“ Umm...no, I think I got it. “ I said examine the paper.
“ Well, have a nice day then. “ she said cheerfully.
“ Thanks. “ I said and walked passed the counter down the hall way.
My first class was English with Mrs. Simon, in section northwest 13.
I looked up on the wall, there was a big N painted. Navigating threw the school was easier than I had expected. I found my class, but it was to early for anyone to be in there, so I decided I would just walk around aimlessly before class started.
I walked around my eyes on the floor, until someone stopped me.
“ Hi, you must be Scarlett. “ a girl said quickly. She was taller than me by a few inches, her dirty blonde hair was half up. She had a friendly smile.
“ Hi... “ I said, confused as to how she knew my name.
“ Oh sorry. I’m Amber. My mom is friends with your Grandmother.” she explained noticing my confusion.
“ Hi Amber. “ I was going to forget her name by the end of the conversation. “ You can call me Lettie. “
“Lettie.. ? I like it.. So, what do you think ? “ she asked curios.
“ It’s not what I expected. “ I admitted.
She laughed. “ You were expecting dirty alleyways and hobos, right ? “
“ Something like that. “ I giggled.
“ Yeah, Hopewell is kinda a secluded place, everyone knows everyone. “ she sighed. I knew it. “ And everyone knows about you. “
I raised my eyebrow, questioning her.
“ It’s not every day we get a new student, especially one as pretty as you.” I blushed. “ News here spreads like wild fire. “
A bell rang.
“ I have to go back to north house, I’ve got English. “ I panicked not wanting to be late.
“ I’ll walk you, I’m in north house too. “ she insisted. I didn’t mind the company.
“ Sure. “
“ What lunch do you have ? “ she asked as we entered north house.
“ Umm... I don’t know. “ I admitted. Handing her my schedule.
“ You have 3rd . Me too ! “ she squealed. You can sit with me, and I’ll introduce you to some friends. “
“ Ok, that sounds nice. “
“ Ok. Bye. “ she said and turned around.
The classes went by pretty quickly. I had a feeling I would get them changed. They seemed pretty easy.
The first half of the day went by pretty easily. At least two people in everyone of my classes introduced them selves to me. Some even offered to sit with me at lunch. I graciously declined, I didn’t want Amber’s feeling to be hurt.
Lunch went by pretty smooth as well, I was introduced to a whole lunch table of friendly faces. I wasn’t use to being the center of attention. It felt like everyone eyes were watching my every move, like I was an alien. I was glad when the bell rang so I could go to my last class of the day and get home.
Gym...,eww.
I started walking towards the gym, when I felt someone at my side. It was a boy and girl Amber had introduced to me at lunch. I forgot their names.
“ You have gym with us ! “ she said gleefully.
“ That’s good. “ was my only response.
“ Come on we don’t want to be late. “ the boy said walking faster. I followed in suit.
We entered the gym and sat in the middle of the glossily floor like the rest of the class. The gym teacher was taking attendance, he called out names alphabetically.
“ Kevin Donald. “ the teacher yelled.
The boy sitting next to me raised his hand. Ok, got to remember that, Kevin. And then I found out that the girls name was Steph.
“ Anyone new ? “ he asked. I raised my hand reluctantly.
“ Ok, I’m coach James. Umm.. Next class make sure you bring some gym clothes to change into. I won’t make you do anything today, so you can just sit on the bleachers. All right class, go get changed and we’ll get started. “
The whole class got off of the floor and scattered into the locker rooms.
I started walking over to the bleachers when Steph pulled my arm “ Watch this. “ she whispered and pulled me over to coach James. I turned around to see Kevin with a confused expression on his face, I shrugged my shoulders and continued to let her drag me.
“ Umm,,, coach ? Can I sit out with Lettie. I mean she is new and all... and I was thinking I could show her the ropes and all. “ she smiled.
Coach gave her a skeptical face then looked at me. I smiled sheepishly at him. He chuckled and shook his head. “ Just this once. “ he gave in.
“ Yes ! “ Steph said.
Kevin walked over to us. “ Can I sit out with them too ? “ Kevin asked hopefully.
“ Not a chance buddy. “ Coach said. “ Get changed. “
He sighed “ Alright guys I got to go get changed, Bye Lettie. “ he said walking over to the locker room.
“ Bye. “
I looked back over at Steph, she was staring at me her eyes narrow. “ What ? “ I asked confused.
“ He likes you. “ she whispered.
We walked over to the bleachers and I chose to sit at the very top in the far left corner. She continued her actustion.
“ I’ve liked him since we were 12. And he hasn’t shown me one bit of interest. And now you... “ she whispered.
“ I think your wrong....and anyways I don’t like him. He’s just trying to be friendly. “ I said trying to cheer her up.
“ Thanks. “ she smiled, and then sighed deeply.
“ What’s the matter ? “ I asked.
“ Why can’t I be pretty like you ? Your gorgeous. I mean come on, you have to know how good you look. “ she said.
“ Stop, ok. Your fine just the way you are. “ I sounded like Dr. Phil.
“ Yeah, but I’m not pretty like you. “
I shook my head and sighed deeply, looking down at the basketball court. Most of the students had already started with their partners. Steph and I just sat quietly and watched, until something caught my eyes.
The gym door swung open and the most statuesque boy walked through the doors. My mouth flew wide open. Never in my 17 years old life had a seen a creature so mind- numbingly beautiful with my own eyes. His hair was black, the length was about to his ears, the ends flipped out. His face was glorious, a true sight. The ones you would see high-end fashion magazine. He was pale, more than me, and his eyes held dark circles of a bruised purple. His pants were black fitted jeans, and he worn a black button up shirt, folded up revealing his forearms, his black shoulder bag swaying as he glided across. His eyes darted in eyes direction of the gym, as if every little noise was picking up his attention. He walked gracefully over to the bleachers on the other side of the gym and sat down in the front row. His elbows resting on his knees, his bag sitting next to him.
Coach James saw him, but didn’t approach him and ask him why he was late. He just shook his head, and scribbled something down in his clip board. Apparently this was a regular occurrence.
I continued to stare at him across the gym. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him. I heard a chuckled form Steph. I looked over at her dumbfounded.
“ Gorgeous, isn’t he ? “ she sighed.
“ He’s good looking. “ I tried to kept from sounding like a school girl. “Who is he ? “ I whispered, looking back at him, he looked extremely bored glancing at the students.
“ That would be Gerard Way. “
All of a sudden his eyes flashed over in our direction. First at Steph, then on me. They held me for a moment, a twinkle of curiosity and confusion in them. I quickly dropped my eyes to my lap. We both giggled out of embarrassment. I looked back up at him and his eyes were darting around the room again.
“ Well, that was interesting.” she giggled. “ Yeah, he doesn’t give anyone the time of day, so don’t get your hopes up. He has a brother to, but he’s taken. I’ll show them top you next time we have lunch with them. “ she promised.
I couldn’t image their being someone else that could look as appealing as he did.
“ They just moved here about 3 years ago. “ she explained, her attention was pulled when Kevin scored a basket. “ Aww ! Did you see him Lettie ? He’s so good ! “ she squealed
But my attention was on this godlike creature. I couldn’t help but stare.
“ Can you stop staring at Gerard, please ? “ she asked annoyed.
And once again, as if he heard his name, he looked directly at us. He only looked at me for a second then he turned away.
Steph giggled.
I looked down again at my lap, letting my bangs fall infront of my face, I peeked through the curtain of hair and saw that his cheek bones were raised as if he were smiling.
For the rest of the gym class I tried so hard not to look at him, occasionally I would slip and glance at him for a moment or two. But never for a long period of time. It was almost the end of gym when coach James was waving me over to him.
No. He was standing in front of the bleachers that Gerard was sitting, only a few feet down. I would have to walk pass him.
“ He’s calling you. “ Steph said pointing to Coach James.
I got up reluctantly and walked down the bleachers, across the gym, ducking for cover from flying balls, I and walked beside the bleachers making my way over to Coach James. I keep my eyes on my feet, I couldn’t let my eyes wander, I never very well where they would fall, on him. I could feel my self getting closer to where he was sitting on the bleachers, and I was praying that I didn’t trip or get hit in the head with a basketball.
As I continued walking one of my ill-fitting rings slipped off my finger and rolled ahead of me on the gym floor. I chased after it, kneeling on my knees to pick it up, when I realized I was about 3 feet away from his shoes.
I looked up at him to see that he was glaring at me now, and his posture had changed from being casual, to being rigid and repellant. I sat there on my knees unable to move, my hand clasped my ring, his eyes were resentful and cold on my face, his expression was inflamed. His hands were gripping the bleachers securely.
“ Lettie. “ Coach James called to me “ Come here I have to talk to you. “
It was then I realized that the whole time I hadn’t been breathing. I looked over at the Coach, and I sucked in a harsh breath. I looked back over to Gerard he was looking down in his lap, his hands still tightly clenching the bleachers, his expression still pained.
I wobbled to my feet shocked and confused, I ran pasted him, my eyes stayed on the ground.
I looked up at Coach James, he looked at me then back at Gerard, his expression was bewildered, as to my shakiness.
I smiled to fool him. It worked.
“ Umm, yeah. I have some forums that I need you and your Grandmother to sign. It’s just some medical history things.” he said handing me the papers.
I nodded and tucked them under my arm.
The dismissal bell rang and the students began to feel the room. I slowly unlocked my knees and began walking toward the exit. He rushed right past me faster than I thought possible, reaching the door before any of the students.
“ Way ! “ Coach yelled to him. He stopped dead in his tracks, but he didn’t turn around.
“ You forgot your bag. “ Coach continued. He slowly turned around his eyes flashing over to the bleachers where he left his bag, and then to pierce through me.
I gripped the paper that coach had given me tightly, afraid that I would fall over.
He started walking back towards me, his hands balled into fist at his sides. His eyes forward, still burning. And as he passed me he leaned his face away as if he had smelled something repulsive. Although he looked utterly infuriated, and was scaring me to death, his face was still marvelous.
Once he was behind me I quickly sprinted out the gym doors and out of the school. I started to walk home. It was raining, and for once I was glad, because then no one could see my tears.
