‘Ey Kira!’ Rei burst into the music shop where she worked.
‘Rei? You’re not working until tonight…’ Kira, who’d just finished serving a customer by the cash register, replied.
‘I know, that’s why I’m here.’ Rei came up to the register. ‘Is Shinya in?’
‘He’s gone out to pick up some new signs for the shop window, he’ll be back after lunch he says.’ Kira said, sitting on the stool behind the register. ‘He’s not going to let you take tonight off you know that?’ He said knowingly – why else would she look for Shinya if she weren’t going to ask him about having the night off.
‘Why not?’ She asked, resting her arms on the counter.
‘Well you were off for a whole week last week, you came late the past three shifts and what good reason should you give that will make him take you off tonight?’ Kira asked, raising an eyebrow.
‘Well…’ Rei didn’t want to tell him about the GazettE - that might lead to him wanting her to get things for him. ‘Is Ruka in?’
‘She’s out the back.’ Kira replied.
‘Ruka?’ Rei went looking for Ruka in the stock room.
‘Hey.’ Ruka waved to Rei from behind a stack of CDs and magazines.
Ruka was Shinya’s fiancée - she’s worked there since Shinya opened the shop 5 years ago. Rei figured maybe Ruka could let her off tonight.
‘I need a favour.’ Rei said.
‘If it’s about getting time off work, not again, Shinya isn’t happy with you lately.’ Ruka smiled apologetically.
‘But Ruka, this is so important!’ Rei protested.
‘Shinya says unless you’re dying, it’s not important enough.’ Ruka said. ‘I’m sorry.’
‘Ruka, remember me telling you about Aoi?’ Rei asked.
Ruka was the only person at work who knew about her history.
Ruka only nodded in response. ‘He’s in town, the GazettE’s playing tonight, and you want to see him?’ She asked knowingly.
‘Not quite… I met up with him already not half an hour ago. Ruki insisted that I come see them tonight, and wouldn’t take no for an answer, and he’s asked me to sing.’ Rei said in a lowered voice.
Ruka’s eyes widened. ‘Serious?’
‘Afraid so.’ Rei couldn’t help but smile. ‘So I desperately need tonight off.’ She came back to the point.
Ruka seemed a little troubled. ‘Rei, you know I want to let you go…’
‘And so you will?’ Rei asked, meeting Ruka’s apologetic eyes. ‘Please?’ She begged.
Ruka sighed. ‘I’ll work your shift tonight, I’ll tell Shinya you’re really sick.’ She agreed finally.
‘Ruka, you’re an angel!’ Rei went to give Ruka a kiss on the cheek.
‘Get me a shirt or something, the least you can do…’ Ruka laughed.
‘Will do.’ Rei winked, already making her way out of the stock room, thinking she was going to get Ruka more than a shirt.
Meanwhile, the boys were at some café in the middle of the city, doing the Fool’s Mate interview.
The interview had already gone for half an hour, and as Reita suspected, it was mostly himself and Ruki who answered the questions asked by the little lady with the recording device, notebook and pen.
‘Aoi-san, how come you don’t seem to be thrilled about tonight as the others?’ The lady asked finally.
Aoi had zoned out of the interview after five minutes, giving his fullest attention at the window, where he could see people passing by as he waited for Rei.
‘I am… I’m just a little tired I guess…’ Aoi smiled.
‘Fair enough, as long as you shape up for tonight, eh?’ The lady smiled, turning off the recording device. ‘Well, that’s it guys, thanks for your time.’ She packed up her notebook and pen. ‘I’ll be watching tonight, make sure you bring down the roof, huh?’
‘Will do.’ Kai smiled, as the lady got up to leave.
‘Bye.’ The boys waved her goodbye as she left.
‘Aoi, what’s wrong?’ Kai asked immediately, concerned.
‘Just… a little headache.’ Aoi smiled to tell him not to worry.
‘Well, I’m hungry.’ Reita said. ‘I don’t think I want to eat here though.’
‘Wait till Rei gets-‘ Uruha began when Rei walked into the café. ‘Wait, she’s here.’ He smiled, waving at Rei, who smiled back as she made her way to their table, to sit on the seat previously occupied by the interview lady, next to Reita.
‘Interview over already?’ She asked.
‘Yup.’ Ruki nodded.
‘Question.’ Rei said. ‘I was thinking, on the way here… what the hell do I wear on stage?’ She asked. ‘You’re all going to be in fancy clothes, I have none.’ She chuckled.
‘Rei, that’s a silly question.’ Ruki raised an eyebrow. ‘You can mix and match our clothes.’ Ruki grinned. ‘You’re only one size smaller than I am, and I’m sure you can fit into most of our shirts and tops.’
Rei laughed. ‘That’s true.’
‘So no more excuses.’ Ruki said.
‘And your manager, crew or whoever it is will be okay with this?’ Rei asked.
‘We run the show, princess.’ Reita said.
‘Alright.’ Rei chuckled, giving up with the excuses.
Aoi couldn’t help but notice her smile. He realised how much he missed seeing that.
‘I’m hungry people! Can we go somewhere else?’ Reita reminded them.
‘Alright alright.’ Ruki said.
‘Where to?’ Kai asked.
‘Guys…’ Rei said. ‘I have the sudden urge to feed the lot of you.’ She grinned. ‘How about I cook something?’
‘Yes!’ Kai stood up in excitement – it had been so long since she’s cooked for them. She used to be their dedicated cook before Kai.
‘Ah, home cooking other than Kai’s…’ Reita laughed. ‘I can’t say no to that…’
‘So yes?’ She asked.
‘Aoi? Uruha?’ Ruki asked the two who’d been a little quiet since Rei walked in.
‘Yeah, of course.’ Uruha smiled.
Aoi only nodded.
‘Alright.’ Ruki nodded.
‘Welcome to Rei’s little palace.’ Rei opened the door to her apartment.
Aoi held the door open so she could lead them in.
They exchanged glances quickly before she walked in, followed by Uruha, Ruki, Reita, Kai then Aoi, who closed the door behind him.
‘Kai, you can help.’ Rei said, getting out some pans out of the kitchen cupboard. ‘Just get some stuff ready while I go downstairs to the grocer.’
She had recipes stuck on all over the front part of the fridge. ‘Um…’ She scanned her eyes through them. ‘This one.’ She pointed at it.
Kai nodded.
‘Find what you can here, there shouldn’t be much, do what you can while I go down to fetch the rest of the ingredients.’ She smiled.
‘Okay.’ Kai smiled.
‘Just get out what you need or want,’ She said, getting ready to leave again.
‘You want some company?’ Aoi asked as she got to the door.
She stopped in her tracks rather suddenly, hesitating for a moment before smiling and turning around. ‘Okay.’
Just as Uruha was going to make a sound to protest, Aoi shot him a glance of “don’t even think about it.”
‘So.’ Aoi made conversation as they took the elevator down from her level to the ground floor. ‘What are you up to these days?’ He asked, leaning against the mirrored back wall of the elevator.
‘I work in a music shop.’ She answered.
There were no hard feelings between them. None of them could ever hold such negativity towards one another.
‘Cool.’ Aoi nodded.
He didn’t offer to keep her company to question about the past, of why she chose to disappear completely out of his life, he wasn’t going to ask to be given another go now, he just wanted to feel her existence, to maybe see that flicker of love in her eyes again.
So far she’s not given anything away.
Maybe she was completely over him, maybe she’s forgotten his promise that he’d still love her even when they’re old and wrinkly.
‘Aoi I haven’t forgotten.’ She said suddenly.
‘Huh?’ Aoi shifted his eyes from his feet to her.
‘I know what you’re thinking.’ She smiled knowingly. ‘I haven’t forgotten. I’m still taking your word for it.’ She nodded, just as the elevator stopped on the ground floor.
Aoi followed her out of the elevator before walking alongside her as they headed out of the building. ‘What was I thinking?’ He smiled.
‘I don’t have to answer that.’ She smiled teasingly.
Aoi let out a little laugh. ‘Woman, you drive me insane.’
‘It’s all unintentional.’ She said.
He followed her around the little grocery shop, carrying the items she was purchasing whilst wondering why did she leave, though for the moment he remained light hearted about the matter. He was with her at the moment, so for the moment all is fine.
They made small conversation on the way back to Rei’s apartment, they managed not to bring up the past as they travelled back up in the elevator, and nothing more was said as soon as the door to Rei’s home was opened again.
With Kai’s help, she cooked them all a nice meal and they all ate around the living room – her place wasn’t big enough for a proper dining area.
‘So Rei, how come you moved to this district?’ Reita asked as they ate.
She shifted a little, uncomfortable with the question. ‘Um…’
‘Reita, it’s really none of our business.’ Aoi said calmly.
Reita was a little surprised – despite the calmness in Aoi’s voice, he knew Aoi didn’t like the question Reita just asked Rei at all.
Rei gave Aoi a quick look of “thank you”, only to be seen by Aoi who returned the look with a quick smile and Uruha, who glanced at Aoi with envy.
‘Oh come on Aoi, don’t you think we have at least the right to know why she left so suddenly?’ Reita asked.
Ruki shot Reita a glance, begging him to stop it.
Aoi said nothing.
‘You’re right.’ Rei said.
‘See?’ Reita chuckled to the others.
‘I left because I needed a change. Why? The reason is personal, I’m afraid that’s all I can tell you guys.’ She said bluntly.
Aoi looked away as she answered Reita’s question, willing away the guilt both him and Rei knew he shouldn’t have.
‘And it had nothing to do with you guys, or with Yune leaving, I just wanted to move away, and Ruka, who’s a friend of mine offered me a decent job at the music shop, the pay wasn’t bad, so I thought I’d take the job, instead of hanging around you guys jobless.’ She smiled. ‘No offence.’
‘None taken, but we offered you a job, remember, to be the lyric co-writer with Ruki.’ Kai argued.
‘Kai, we’ve been through this before,’ she looked away from Aoi, who now had his eyes on her, watching her longingly. ‘I’m just not cut out for that sort of life.’
‘You don’t know till you try.’ Ruki smiled.
‘After tonight, you’ll have a taste of what it’s like, the job is still open.’ Uruha said.
‘Thanks, but I think I’ll stick with the crummy music shop life.’ She chuckled.
‘Whatever, I still bet by the end of tonight you’ll be begging for the job.’ Kai laughed.

P.S forgive the ramblings, it seems to drag on at the moment, but this is how it was played out in my mind, and I wanted things to be unravelled slowly as to why Rei left and things, this I hope builds the tension between her and Aoi (and Uruha). If you think about it, little moments between the two, which seems unnecessary are really another step towards what’s to come.
