Hayley Williams was one of the luckiest girls alive. She had just celebrated her eighteenth birthday with three of her best friends and the man she considered her father. For all purposes of the definition, he was her father. Andrew Mackintosh was a grizzly man with shoulder length brownish-red hair and a beard to match. His body was covered with tattoos and he owned a biker bar, but he was the kindest person Hayley had ever had the pleasure of knowing.
She knew of how great his kindness was because of the day they had met, but that was nowhere near where Hayley’s story began.
Hayley was born in Hell, the real honest to Christ Hell. Her father, Anthony Iero, had been a human who had lived in the small town of Contract Valley just before its first destruction. He had given up his humanity to be given the chance to get back at the son he had lost, becoming a dragon from the darkest depths. Satan had given him a choice of concubines and he had chosen Amelia Williams, a full blooded dragon whose entire family had been born and reared in Hell.
For centuries, in Hell time, Amelia and Anthony had lived a life without children. Anthony had lost his son forever, having heard shorter after taking his position that Frank Iero had escaped from the hellish prisons with his friend Mikey Way, and had given up on getting Amelia pregnant when over ten centuries had passed without any success.
Finally, when nearly seven years Contract Valley time and 70,000 years Hell time had passed, Amelia gave Anthony the news that she had finally become pregnant. She laid the egg, seeing as they were both dragons, and a year later, Hayley was born.
Anthony saw Hayley as an excuse to make the child he always wanted, a child full of anger and hate like himself, but Amelia was too kindly and lavished Hayley with love and kindness. Hayley took more after her mother and refused, even at the age of two and three, to follow in her father’s footsteps. When she was five, his abuse and torture became too much for her and she found a way out of Hell.
This is where Andy Mackintosh comes into the story of Hayley’s life. She had been traveling through the rebuilt Contract Valley, digging through trashcans in hopes of finding food when she wandered outside the city, finding a small biker bar a few miles away. She began to dig through the trashcans when she heard the sound of a gun shot and angry yelling. “Get the fuck out of my cans, you fucking dogs!”
Hayley had jumped back into the light of the door to see who was yelling at her. Andy saw the young girl, bleeding, barely wearing any clothes, without shoes in the fresh snow and his face softened. “Where are you parents, sweetheart?”
“In Hell.” Hayley answered the only way she knew how. She was shivering from fright and couldn’t move, afraid he would use the big gun on her.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry.” He put the gun inside the door and showed her that he meant her no harm, which helped ease her hurt a little bit, but she somehow knew that he thought she meant that her parents were dead. She backed away as he moved closer to her and he stopped. “Come inside, sweetheart. I live above this bar and have clean clothes for you and something warm to eat. I won’t hurt you. I swear upon my life.”
In Hell to swear upon your life meant a great deal, so Hayley hesitantly went with the kindly man. He fed her, bathed her, and called his brother to bring her some clothes. She had wandered around his apartment looking in curiosity at all his things with one of his shirts on, dragging the ground behind her.
Joseph Mackintosh had arrived within an hour with a bag of clothes for a small girl and was shocked to find Hayley in his brother’s house. He helped his brother dress her and put her to bed before sitting in the living room and asking his brother the obvious question. “What are you doing to do with her, Andy?”
Andy looked at the door where the young girl was sleeping and shrugged. “She’s all alone, Joe. I don’t want to put her back on the streets. I think I want to keep her here, with me.”
Joe had laughed and shook his head. “You were always a softy, Andy, but I agree with you on this one. She should be kept safe. I don’t know why, but something doesn’t feel right about her.”
“I know what you mean. She’s special.”
In her first week there, the two brothers had realized just how special Hayley was. A biker brawl downstairs had caused little Hayley to get away from Joe, who was sitting with her while Andy stopped the fight. She had watched the two men fighting, Andy trying to separate them, and wanted to help. She growled, low and feral, and everyone grew silent, not knowing where the noise had come from. It hadn’t taken Andy long to find her standing behind the bar. He got the two guys out of the bar and then too Hayley back upstairs.
“Hayley, baby, was that you who growled at the men?”
“They were going to hurt you. You’ve taken such good care of me that I didn’t want you to get hurt. Where would I go?” Hayley was crying, thinking she had done wrong.
Andy shook his head and hugged her to him. “No, baby, it’s alright. I was just curious as to how you did that.”
“I’m a dragon. Is that bad?”
“No. It’s not. Joe and I are warlocks. As long you keep others from knowing, you’ll be okay. Do you understand me? Until you can control yourself, no one is to know.”
Hayley had nodded and then allowed him to put her back into bed. Her nightmares that night were horrendous and only Andy’s arms around her as she slept seemed to comfort her. That was the night she first called him daddy.
That was thirteen years ago and she had never forgotten where she came from, but she would never go back. She had a father who loved her and an uncle who kept her safe, what else did she need? Best friends, of course.
Jeremy Davis was a twenty-two year old werewolf who also happened to shoot people for a living. He was a bounty hunter and often told Hayley, when she asked, about some of his tougher jobs. He was almost six foot tall with shoulder length blondish brown hair that hung in his face and almost never shaved. He was Hayley’s equivalent to an older brother because he had been around for years, always ‘doing business’ with her father. He was a part-time bartender for her father when he wasn’t out killing people.
Josh and Zac Farro were brothers who had been living with her and her father for nearly a year now. Josh was a twenty year old wereleopard and Zac was a seventeen year old werebear, making him the youngest of their little group. Josh was tall and thin with shoulder length brown hair and a lip ring, whereas Zac was only slightly shorter than his brother, though a lot bulkier with chin length hair her refused to get out of his face and a dislike of even attempting to shave. Josh was currently taking classes at the local college while Zac and Hayley were finishing their last month of home school together, helping out in the bar when it was needed.
Together the four friends had found that they had relative skills in the musical department and had started their own band known as Animal Magnetism together. With Hayley on vocal, Josh on guitar, Jeremy on bass, and Zac on drums, they had become a regular show in the bar. They had become so big that they had even begun to use the local high school gym on weekends to play for everyone. It was one of the reasons they were there tonight.
Backstage, Hayley sat with the three guys and Andy, blowing out the candles on her birthday cake. She was eighteen now and would come into her full powers at midnight tonight. She wasn’t sure if that was a good thing, but it was something that excited her. She smiled at her father as he cut the cake and felt tears come to her eyes. “Do you remember this day thirteen years ago, Daddy?”
Andy smiled as he handed Zac a piece of cake. “How could I forget, baby? I found you that night. I think you made my life complete showing up on my doorstep. My little miracle.”
“Aww, isn’t that sweet? Can you pass a piece of cake my way?” Everyone died laughing at Josh’s impatience on getting some food into his stomach. The boy was an eating machine.
Andy passed the cake and they all ate with a great deal of goofing off and laughing. Joe showed up just before the show and handed Hayley a small box, kissing her softly on the forehead. “Happy Birthday, Hayley. I hope you like it. I spent all day trying to find just the right one.”
Hayley smiled at her uncle and opened the box to find a fiery red dragon pendant. She ran her fingers over the cold stone and shuttered at the power found in it. She looked up at her uncle and he shrugged. “Couldn’t go around without you being protected, could I?”
Hayley smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I love it, Uncle Joe.” She put it on her neck and felt the cold metal warm up as it touched her scalding skin, a side effect of the power burst that was to occur tonight. “Now we should get onto the stage.”
Two hours later, Hayley and the boys collapsed into the chairs in the back lounge. She glanced at the clock and gasped. “It’s almost midnight. I have to get out of here.” She grabbed her bag and ran out the door with questioning looks from all the boys, but it was Jeremy who followed her out of the building.
He tailed her all the way to the debris that had once been Contract Valley. He stood in the shadows as she stood in a clearing and began to glow a bright red. He heard the church bells begin to chime midnight and watched as Hayley went from the tiny young girl he had watched grow over the last few years to a small red dragon, fire exploding in a ring around her, barely stopping before it came to Jeremy.
He moved back so that her dragon eyes couldn’t see his body heat and breathed deep of the scent of sulfur through the cold December air. He glanced back and found her lying, in human form, on the ground, shivering. Hayley never shivered.
He ran to her and took his jacket off, wrapping it around her naked body and scooping her up gently. She moaned in pain and he whispered soothingly. “Shh, Haze, it’s me. I’m going to get you back to the bar. We need to get you cleaned up. Don’t worry. I won’t let anything hurt you. What are big brothers for?”
He kissed her on the forehead and saw the small smile come across her face as she whispered in a hoarse voice. “I always knew you considered me your sister, Remy.”
“Always and forever, Haze.” Jeremy turned around and started to walk quickly back to the bar where her had been staying with Andy, Hayley, and the Farro brothers for the last few months. He didn’t know what had just happened, but he knew that Hayley had never turned into a full dragon before.
Worry made the miles seem short to him. He walked through the apartment door and called for Andy as he set her on the couch, listening to the sound of the older man walked into the room and gasped. “What happened to her?”
“She turned full dragon. I don’t know.”
“Powers … full …” Hayley’s voice was weak as she looked up at her father and best friend, shaking her head. “Hot water …” She opened her mouth to speak again, but darkness took her vision and all was lost.
