A/n: My muse was happy, so you're getting another chapter already. This is what happens when I spend the whole day hanging out with the girls and watching Johnny Depp movies (we've been going since 7 on Friday night and have only stopped for meals and sleeping. We've watched about nine movies so far...
“He’s quite and agreeable young man. And handsome, as well. But he’s always been quite taken with Elizabeth… a sad fact for the rest of us,” Cassandra Bennett said, smirking slightly at the look on Elizabeth’s face.
“You’re one to talk. William Beckett has been in love with you for years, since before I ever even met Mr. Blackinton. And he is just as handsome and agreeable as any other eligible man in London… more so than most, in fact,” Elizabeth replied, making Cassandra blush a bit, as well. Thankfully, they were seated in the front parlor of the townhouse owned by Cassandra’s father. Lily simply held her tongue and smirked a bit.
“I’m surprised that you have nothing to say on the subject, Lily. This does greatly improve your prospects for the future. Perhaps your sister will be able to find a suitable match for you among the new acquaintances she will make as a married woman,” Cassandra said, wondering what caused Lily to smile. Not to mention the fact that she wanted to get the attention away from her own romantic life.
“I am quite happy for the two of them. He is a lucky man to win the heart of my sister, and I believe that she is a lucky woman to have found such a good man. I have nothing to say about your other ideas as to why I should be happy about my sister’s impending marriage,” Lily replied. Cassandra smiled slightly at Lily’s reply.
“But that friend of his – Mr. Saporta, I believe his name was – appears to be quite a catch. And from what Camilla told me, he also appears to be smitten with you,” Cassandra replied. Lily smiled at the suggestion and shook her head.
“He certainly is handsome and agreeable, but I do not agree with the assumption that he is quite taken with me, despite whatever Camilla might be gossiping about to you and the rest of the town,” Lily replied. She didn’t want anyone within their group of acquaintances to receive an incorrect impression of anyone’s feelings in regards to the matter.
“I believe someone is feeling a bit defensive,” Elizabeth pointed out. Lily sat up a bit straighter and shook her head.
“It is not being defensive. It is simply being practical about the entire situation. In a few days time Mr. Saporta will be returning to his family’s estate in Derbyshire and I shall likely never see him again,” Lily replied.
“You never know what might happen, Lily,” Cassandra replied, smiling mischievously. Elizabeth couldn’t help but smile as well. She knew that Lily was quite taken with Gabriel, mainly because her sister had a bit of a bad habit of talking in her sleep.
“Yes. Seeing as our wedding is soon to be upon us, Mr. Blackinton might very well ask Mr. Saporta to stay in London a bit longer,” Elizabeth added. Lily couldn’t help but blush a bit at the suggestion present in the words of both women.
“Even if he were to stay in London for a longer period of time than originally planned, it is highly unlikely that anything would become of it. We have only seen each other three times, Cassandra, and that is hardly enough to truly know someone. Until I know more of his character, I cannot truly pass judgment on Mr. Saporta,” Lily replied.
“That has not stopped you from passing judgment on others in the past, Lily,” Elizabeth replied, an ominous tone in her voice. Lily knew that she was referencing the incident that had taken place a few days prior to their current conversation.
“That is quite a different matter. I was not judging his character, I was commenting on his personality and the fact that I do not agree with your ideas about him, Elizabeth,” Lily replied, purposely being vague. Cassandra did not need to be acquainted with the details of the conversation George Ross had been unfortunate enough to overhear.
“What are the two of you talking about?” Cassandra asked, her curiosity piqued. Lily glared at Elizabeth, not wanting her sister to repeat any of the conversation that had caused such embarrassment for both parties involved.
“A simple slip of the tongue, that’s all,” Elizabeth replied, sensing Lily’s annoyance over the fact that the conversation had even been brought up in front of someone outside of the parties involved.
“You have some sort of secret that you aren’t telling me about, I see,” Cassandra replied.
“It’s nothing against you, darling, but the embarrassment of it all… it wouldn’t do for what happened to be repeated,” Elizabeth explained, hoping that would quench her curiosity. It would have worked quite well, had the butler not entered at that moment.
“Mr. Ross and Mr. Beckett to see you, ma’am,” the man said. All three of the ladies quickly stood to greet the new arrivals, and Lily braced herself to see Mr. Ross for the first time since she had embarrassed herself so royally.
“Good afternoon, ladies,” William Beckett said the moment he had walked into the room. He and George bowed to the ladies, who promptly curtsied in response.
“Good afternoon, gentlemen,” Cassandra replied, ignoring the glances exchanged between Lily and Elizabeth at the appearance of George Ross in the room. “I trust you have both been well.
“Very well, Miss Bennett,” William replied.
“Would you care to sit?” Cassandra offered, motioning to the empty seats around the room. William and George both moved to find empty seats as the ladies sat down in their previous positions. Unfortunately for Lily, once William had taken the position next to Cassandra the only empty seat within an appropriate distance was directly next to her. This forced her to be in close proximity with the one person she would really rather have avoided.
“I hope that you have been well since the last time we saw one another,” Lily said, attempting to make small talk before she was forced to work some of her charm in an attempt to try and rescue her pride.
“Quite well,” he replied. Lily swallowed hard before she went on with the rest of the damage control that had suddenly been forced upon her.
“I wish you would forgive me for the way I behaved the other day,” she began. “I was perturbed at my sister when I spoke, and the words came out much worse than I had intended. They were certainly not meant for your ears, nor for the ears of anyone else.”
“I am sure they were not. But everyone has a right to their own opinions, and you were simply expressing yours,” he replied, refusing to look in her direction. Lily was glad that the room’s other inhabitants were engaged in their own conversation over the fact that Elizabeth and Ryland were soon to be married.
“Those opinions were not meant as they came out, I assure you Mr. Ross. You must understand that your visit with my sister and Miss Asher delayed our meeting by more than a quarter of an hour. Seeing as my sister is perpetually late for every engagement, I was quite annoyed with her, and that annoyance was, unfortunately, transferred onto the topic of conversation at hand,” Lily replied. She could see that she was making no progress towards her goal of mending the acquaintance.
“Whatever the case may be, what is done is done. The past, unfortunately, can not be changed despite the good intentions of the present,” George told her. She simply nodded.
“I do hope that you can forgive me,” she repeated quietly.
“I see nothing to be forgiven in your actions and words,” he replied. Lily saw that to protest further would be pointless; George would not yield to her protests. She caught Elizabeth’s eye and silently begged for the older girl to find a way out of the awkward situation for the both of them. After what felt like an eternity, but was really only a few minutes, Elizabeth smiled and stood up, prompting both gentlemen to follow suit.
“We really should be going, Lily,” she said. Lily stood as well and smiled at the room’s other occupants. “Good afternoon, Miss Bennett, gentlemen.” Elizabeth began to head for the door and Lily followed as the gentlemen bowed.
Lily could not speak until they had reached the street. “Thank you, Elizabeth,” she said, breathing a sigh of relief, glad to finally be free of the awkwardness that had taken place in the parlor.
“What did he say to you?” Elizabeth asked, curious as to what could possibly have gotten Lily so upset that she would wish to leave so suddenly. It was quite unlike Lily to request to leave somewhere without a reason.
“I attempted to make amends for what happened the other day in the park. He seemed uninterested in my words… I fear that I might have caused an irreparable rift. I just hope that it will have no ill effects,” Lily replied.

“What do you know of your cousin, Miss Lily Fletcher’s prospects?” Gabriel Saporta asked, not looking up from the letter he had been writing to his parents in Derbyshire.
“What do you mean?” Ryland asked, looking up from the book he had been reading. When Gabriel did not respond immediately, Ryland marked his page and closed the book, setting it on the table in front of him. “Gabriel, what did you mean? Why are you asking after my future sister?”
“She is a beautiful young woman. The type that my mother could not refuse as a daughter; educated, accomplished, agreeable…” Gabriel explained, his voice fading out as he spoke. Ryland couldn’t help but smile at his friend’s words.
“You are quite smitten with Miss Fletcher, I take it,” Ryland replied. “She is certainly the type of young lady that your family would approve of. While not well-known or titled, the Fletchers are certainly a respectable family. There are no sons, but the estate is to be split between the two daughters upon the death of the parents. Until that time, they have a thousand pounds each per year.”
“You know that money means nothing to me, Ryland. I shall be Lord Saporta when my father dies, and unlike most lords my father has managed to increase our family’s fortune. What I truly wish to know is if there are any other gentlemen vying for her affections?” Gabriel asked. Ryland smiled and shook his head at the question.
“No, unfortunately she has not been lucky enough to find a gentleman worthy of her affections. But, seeing as she has quite obviously caught your heart, I hope that she will be open to the idea of marrying,” Ryland replied.
“You think that she would be opposed to the idea of marriage?” Gabriel asked, somewhat worried at that revelation. He had not even thought of the possibility that she might be opposed to the match.
“She certainly would be if you proposed to her at this moment,” Ryland answered. “You will simply have to spend plenty of time getting to know her and showing her your true character. Once she knows you a bit better I feel sure that she would not be opposed to such a match.” Gabriel smiled at the revelation; the first part of his friend’s answer had worried him quite a bit. Lily was the first woman he had ever met that he had been able to see as more than just a pretty face, and he could not bear the thought of not having her as a wife. He would have to take a wife, of course; it was expected of a gentleman in his position in society.
After a few moments of silence, Ryland picked his book back up and Gabriel went back to writing his letter, being careful not to mention anything about Lily in his explanation as to why he would not be returning home as soon as he had originally expected.
