Stella was sitting on the fancy canopy bed that Allen had given her when she had moved in with him. As per usual, there was music playing from the boombox in the corner of the room. This time, a musical that she held the script for in her hands.
“Far beyond where the horizon lies / Where the horizon lies / And the land sinks into mellow blueness / Oh please, take me with you”
The door opened and in stormed Allen. “What is that horrid noise? Elizabeth Gretchen Freemont, you will stop that awful tape or I will take it out and break it! I have told you to keep that damned music out of my house.”
Stella jumped up from the bed and crossed her arms over her chest. “That is not my name! And in case you even cared to pay attention to me, you would remember that I made it into the show. I’m singing this song as a solo, Allen.”
Allen flung out his hand across her cheek, sending her sprawling on the floor. “You will learn to obey me, Elizabeth. Or I shall have you taken off to an institution. ‘Such a pity that the senator’s daughter had that breakdown and tried to kill herself and her parents. The poor man having to send her off for all of their safeties.’” Allen imitated the voice of an elderly woman as he stalked closer to her.
“You will obey me, Elizabeth. Or that will be your fate. In fact, I rather like the sound of that. It would certainly cause a gain in approval ratings among the female demographic.” Allen gave a sharp kick to her side and knelt down beside her with a menacing grin on his face. “One more problem and I will have you put away from the world for the rest of your miserable little life. Do you understand me, Elizabeth?”
All Stella could do was nod as she still hadn’t regained her breath. This seemed to be good enough for Allen as he nodded and walked across the room to the door and swung it open before turning back to her with a fake smile. “Oh, don’t forget you have to entertain the Winters boy tonight at the gala so I can discuss some business with his father.”
And with that, Allen walked out of the room, leaving Stella curled up in a ball on the floor.
“Then I'll take your hand / Finally glad / Finally glad / That you are here / By my side”

I don’t know how long I was unconscious, because – well, I was unconscious. It could have been a few minutes, or a few hours. I honestly had no idea. But whatever the length of time, I awoke to find myself in a strange bed in a strange room. I glanced up and found myself staring into a pair of blue eyes that put mine to shame.
“Oh good, you’ve finally woke up. I’m Noelani, do you know who you are?”
I absently rubbed a hand over my eyes, no doubt completely ruining the make-up I had spent so long on before heading out earlier today. “Stella. I’m Stella Ackerman. Where am I, how did I get here?”
“Jon found you unconscious in the alleyway. We own the bistro downstairs. Do you know what happened to you?” Noelani gave me a kind gaze, but it looked as if she was suspicious of me, even now. She pushed the blonde hair from her face and stood before heading across the room to where there was a basin of water on a small table.
“I was attacked and robbed.” I glanced around, frantically searching for my purse. Not only was I a bit paranoid now, but I royally needed a cigarette. “Um, did whoever you said find my purse? Or the money I was trying to give the thief? I had pulled out a -“
“No need to pretend, Stella. I know what you really are, and you don’t have to worry about feeling ashamed about it either. Your purse is on the floor beside the couch. As for the money, I’m sorry but we didn’t see any.”
I shrugged absently, after all, you can’t really expect too much neighborly love on this side of the city, and money is always scarce to those around. Besides, I’m sure that Addie could always pick up the remainder of the bills this month. She might be a little upset over it, but I had a few reasons to be upset with her as well.
After a few minutes of digging through my purse, I found my cigarettes and pulled the pack out, turning to whatever her name was again. It was a well-known fact that I was awful with names. “Do you mind if I have a smoke, or should I step outside somewhere?” Sure it might be a bit more socially acceptable, I still ask.
“The fire escape is right out that window, if you wouldn’t mind. Thank you for asking though. I finally managed to convince Jon not to smoke around me, so now I can keep the air much cleaner in here.” She turned back to me with a kind smile. “Just call me Noel. We’re not much different, you and I. Although our situations of hiding are somewhat different of course.”
Mid-step I paused. “Excuse me?” Just who (or what) was this Noel chick? Hopefully not some crazed paparazzi. Deciding against waiting around for an answer, I stepped out onto the fire escape and into the familiar winter chill of December. I took a deep breath of the cold air and smiled at the familiar noise and chaos that was New York City.
“Beautiful view, isn’t it?”
I jumped at the voice coming from a few feet over. Damn I was jumpy lately. I noticed a guy leaning against the railing and smiled. This must be whatever his name was that Noel had said found me. And so of course I could be a bit polite at least. “Yes, it’s lovely. I suppose I should thank you. I would probably still be sprawled unconscious in the alley had it not been for you and your -“ I left the sentence hanging, not knowing what exactly their relationship was and not wanting to unwittingly cause an insult.
“My wife. Jon Wilkes. My better half is Noel. Good thing I found her too, or I’d still be in Hell.” Jon smiled lightly as he leaned against the railing. He looked kind enough and I couldn’t help but smile back. He just seemed to be the friendly and likeable type. But then again, I had thought similar ideas about the last john, and look where that had gotten me. And with that thought, I knew I should leave.
“Well, thank you again for your help and hospitality, but I probably should be leaving. Not only do I need to try and get some work done, I have some things I need to talk to my roommate about. I’ll leave Noel my phone number and we might can grab lunch sometime or something.”
For some reason I started to panic and felt suddenly claustrophobic. I stepped back into the apartment and gave Noel a smile as I headed straight towards the door. “Thank you for your hospitality and helping me, but I really should be going.” I found one of the calling cards that I generally handed out to my johns in my purse and held it out to her with what I could only hope to be a smile free of embarrassment and/or shame. “Here’s my number. Give me a call and maybe I can grab some lunch for you two or something. But I have to head out so forgive me for rushing off.”
Before she could respond, I headed out of the door and, after getting a little disoriented once or twice, found my way to the alley exit and plunged back into the familiar chill of the New York winter. I tried to push the feeling of eyes on me out of my mind, and hurried along the dingey streets. I didn’t really know why, but I just felt like I needed to get back to the apartment and lock myself away for a while.
When I reached the tiny little apartment I shared with Addie, I rushed through the locks and slammed the door behind me with what was probably more enough force. I leaned against the door and could tell by my breathing that I was having a bit of a panic attack. They had been slowing down steadily since I moved out of Allen’s house, but had obviously not completely disappeared.
There were heavy footsteps and I unconsciously let out a terrified squeak as someone rounded the corner from the living room. Although I blushed when I saw that it was just Addie’s boyfriend, Elias. His skin was a bit paler than normal and I froze, willing my heart to slow down. Better not to seem like a tasty snack for my roommate’s boyfriend. After all, while Elias might generally be a fairly tame vampyre, in the scheme of things, he was still a vampyre.
“Ah, Stella, you’re back. Good. I think Adelaide was wanting to talk with you about something.” Elias’ voice had the familiar charm and rich ease that I had hopefully gotten used to. Although it still made me feel more relaxed and free around him, which was a bit frightening, given the circumstances.
He started towards me, and I couldn’t go anywhere, given the locked door behind me and hungry vampyre coming at me from the front. All in all, I was pretty much fucked. As Elias came to stand right in front of me, I could tell by the look in his eyes that it wasn’t exactly the human part of Elias that I was staring down. He leaned in closer and I suddenly found myself very close to my roommate’s boyfriend. Not that Elias was repulsive or anything, just I do have some sense of morals. And being this close to my roommate’s boyfriend was sort of a no-no. His breath was hot on my neck and I couldn’t help but shiver just the smallest bit.
“Stella, I never really noticed how beautiful you really are. The way your eyes just seem to glow. And your pulse is nearly racing out of your chest. I can feel it even now against my lips. Thump. Thump.” Elias’ lips on my neck just added even more to the fire of his voice and I was starting to worry about what might happen.
“Elias Paul Reidy! Get away from Stella and get back over here to me!” Addie walked over and grabbed Elias by the arm and spun him around to face her. A violent flash of fangs and then Elias had Addie pinned to the wall with his mouth on her neck. She reached up and grabbed a handful of his hair and pulled hard causing him to lose his grip on her for just a moment, long enough to pull him in for a kiss.
Knowing that they did this often enough, I turned my head and found myself suddenly very interested in the painting on the other side of the room. Most of the time their feeding sessions either began or ended (or sometimes both) with sex. And if this one was going to end in sex, I didn’t want to be around for it. Because while a bit experimental that I was, a voyeur I was not.
A few seconds (or minutes, I wasn’t really counting) later, they broke apart and I felt a light touch on my arm and I jumped unconsciously, only to find Elias standing beside me with a contrite look on his face. Damn him for his stealth! He was going to kill me with heart attacks.
“Stella, forgive me. I let the bloodlust take over. I should not have done so, but I think I let my mind get away from me. I hope this shall not tarnish your opinion of me.” Elias kissed the back of my hand like all the old fashioned customs held. His voice along with the custom made it nearly impossible to stay upset with him over anything.
“Don’t worry about it, Elias. I should apologize as well. If I had not been panicking so, I would not have seemed such an appetizing treat. I know how to survive around animals such as yourselves. But my panic attacks from childhood seem to have taken to me again.” A though came to me again at the mention of the panic attacks. “Although I have half a mind to run a silver bullet through your heart and remove your head for almost killing me with that psycho friend of yours. Not only was he not a virgin and rough as hell, but he tried to kill me by beating me over the head.”
Elias stopped as he was walking towards the living room and turned back to me, a look of confusion on his face. “Impossible. Joey could never hurt anyone. Least of all someone I’ve named a friend.”
“Well, believe it. Unless someone else was playing an imposter of him, it was Joey. He even had my scarf I sent with you. He finished then beat me over the head with something hard. If it had not been for two kindly bistro owners, I might still be lying in the alley gutter unconscious. Or worse.”
I stepped forward as I said this, willing my heart to stop its frantic pace again. If what Elias was saying was true, then what had happened to me was some sick and twisted plot of either my imagination or some dream. Unless he was wrong about Joey. Or if Elias was lying and had merely set me up to get me out of his way. If the last were true, then I was in a load of shit, and I would have to take up my threat against him again. But first I would of course have to determine who was telling the truth, and what exactly was the truth.
Elias shook his head before walking over to the telephone we had set up on the other side of the room. “I still don’t think that it was Joey. I want to know for sure. Because I don’t know if you know this, but Joey’s fiancée broke it off with him because of a baby. She kept telling him that it wasn’t his, then suddenly runs off and leaves him with the baby. Joey wouldn’t hurt anyone, much less a girl because he has a baby daughter.”
Elias picked up the telephone and dialed a few numbers before turning back to me with a raised eyebrow. If this was true, then what had happened to me? Because I was really starting to worry. I couldn’t help but panic a little more at the thoughts that were running through my mind. It was seriously insane to try and sort out what was going on with the recent events.
“I’ll get Joey to drop by later and we’ll sort everything out. Believe me when I say that as my friend, I won’t let anything happen to you.” Elias turned back to me after speaking into the phone for a few minutes.
“Oh, Stellie, I forgot to tell you. Some reporter was poking around earlier asking for you. She left her name and number for you to get back to her. Something about having some questions for you.” Addie shrugged as she walked back into the room from having gone to clean herself up after the rather violent feeding session. Luckily for her, she had always been rather resilient, comes from being a lycanthrope probably. “I don’t know either, sounded fishy enough to me too. The number’s on the table, I’m going to go get my make-up sex.”
I shook my head laughing as Addie walked over to grab Elias by the arm and pulled him off towards the room they shared, with a wink towards me. Honestly I really did not want to think of my roommate having sex. Sure I knew they were less than innocent, but that doesn’t mean I wanted to acknowledge that fact in my general life. So I merely walked to the phone and picked up the notepad beside the telephone and glanced at the phone number. Better now than never. So I picked up the phone and dialed the number waiting as it rang a few times.
“Autumn Forrest.”
“Hello, this is Stella Ackerman. You left a message with my roommate, wanting to ask me a few questions.”
“Right. Would it be possible to meet somewhere so that I can ask you these questions in person?”
I thought for a moment then nodded, aside from the fact that she obviously could not see the gesture. “Sure. Do you have any preferences? My only requirement is that it be somewhere public. Otherwise, I’m fine.”
“Well since I’m not quite from around here, how about the Empire State Building? I haven’t had much time to sightsee and that’s all that I’ve found so far.”
Well wasn’t that just my luck? What was it with that building and me?! Because it seemed to be royally haunting me. It was where I met Elias the first time, the place I met my first real paying john, the horrid Joey guy from before, and now this. I swear the building would be the death of me.
“Um, Stella? Are you still there?”
I shook my head, willing myself to snap out of my thoughts and actually answer the girl. “Oh yes, sorry about that, was ... checking on the food I have on the stove. But the ESB should be fine. Do you have any preferences to when we meet?”
“Right, sorry. First real job and all.”
I laughed to myself. “Don’t worry, I completely understand.”
“Well, how about tomorrow around five? I sort of have some things I have to take care of most of the day so evening would be best.”
“How about six? I’m always supposed to be around here for the dinner shift on Thursdays. My night to cook and such.” Really it was all because I wanted a little more time between class and having to leave for this meeting and then work. But she didn’t have to know that.
“If Thursdays are your night to cook, what’s on the stove tonight?”
I was already starting to dislike this reporter, and I hadn’t even met her yet. “Tomato Soup. For my roommate’s boyfriend. His night to cook, but he’s sick. So I volunteered. And before you pry again, what does my cooking schedule have to do with you? Because quite frankly I don’t think it has any relevance to you or whatever crock story you’re writing. So forgive me, but I must get back to my other engagements. I shall speak with you again tomorrow and I’ll be anxious to find out what exactly I can help you with. Good night, Miss Forrest.”
Before the reporter could answer, I hung up the phone and walked down the hall to my small bedroom and pulled out a set of pajamas before heading towards the bathroom. A nice hot shower and sleep would be amazing right about now, and if anyone tried to interrupt me from that, they were likely to get something they wouldn’t particularly enjoy.
