Hey guys, sorry it
took a while but I kept writing this then deleting it and rewriting. I think I’m finally just about happy with it now...hope you guys like it too.
I watched the people passing by the entrance to the alley, most not even bothering to glance down it, from force of habit I guess, or maybe they were just afraid of what they might see there. It’s strange isn’t it? How people are so determined to avoid the concept of death, the lengths they’ll go to just to not be reminded of it. Like homeless people for example, they’re seen as scum, usually with short life spans. Not their fault I might add, I mean you have no idea the amount of bacteria and disease that surrounds you in a city but living and wallowing in that...well you get the picture. Anyway, continuing with my story...
Flashback
I walked through the wall, checking my watch. I cursed at what I saw, I only had 14 minutes to get over to the St. Radians Hospital in Newport to collect my next soul. Of course getting there wasn’t the problem, finding the person was. This is why I normally arrived with loads of time to spare. I was only given a name, a time and a place so the rest I had to work out on my own, guess my bosses didn’t want me to have a particularly easy time of it. Obviously there’s not only me doing this, there are a handful of us, scattered over the world but we still have a heck of a lot to do let me tell you.
I closed my eyes, feeling the world close in around me like being put in a vacuum. A really didn’t like the sensation at first, it really was not a nice experience, like being sucked through a straw backwards but over time I had become accustomed to it. When I opened my eyes I was in the hospital alright, upstairs which meant that my soul was either in the Reed Ward, Treman Ward or the Children’s Ward. Can you tell I’ve been to this place a lot? Glancing at my watch I saw my time had decreased by 3 minutes and 28 seconds...I had to move quickly. Treman was the nearest so I went there first. As it was mainly a day surgery unit it was unlikely my soul was in here but I always had to check. There were only 4 patients beds in use at that time, mine was Lucy Bennett. Only one nurse on duty as well, male. Nope, not here, on to Reed it is then.
Reed Ward yielded the same no joy results, which meant the Children’s Ward. I took a slight breath, I always hated going in here. It was hard; I mean everyone feels something you know, even me. Also, with children they were the hardest to convince, I mean, they would keep asking questions like when would they see their parents again...Anyway, moving on...
When I walked in, I could hear crying, but not child crying, adult. I knew then that had to be where I was needed. As I walked towards the sound I saw a woman sitting outside with a man beside her. It was the woman who was sobbing as the doctor talked to them both quietly. Then I saw her hand over some papers, I peeped over his shoulder and sighed. Ah, so this was a life support case.
I followed the parents into the room, there she was. Lucy Bennett, she looked around 7 or 8 and the only sound in the room, other than her mother’s crying was the steady pip of the heart monitor and breathing equipment. I stood and watched quietly as the father gave his little girl a kiss to the forehead and the mother pooled into the chair beside her, crying into her arm. I saw the father nod, heard the click and heard the pipping continue for a second or so before the monitor flat-lined. The mother cried harder and the father put his arms around her, trying to console her in some way as the doctor unplugged the heart monitor and left the room quietly.
The only sound in the room now was quiet hushing and sobbing as the parents mourned their daughter. I sighed, looking to my side as a shimmer started before forming into the image of the little girl sitting in the bed. I crouched beside her. “Hey sweetie. class=GramE>Your name’s Lucy right?”
She nodded slowly. “Where am I?”
“You’re safe.” I told her. Then she looked to the side. “That’s my mummy.” She said, looking to the crying lady. “Mummy!” She ran towards the figure and I tried to stop her but when the small figure reached out to touch her mother the hand passed straight through. The girl gasped, pulling back, alarmed. “Mummy!” She began to cry. “Mummy!” I went towards her and took her by the shoulders, turning her to face me. “I know you’re scared, but everything is going to be okay. I promise.”
“But what about Mummy and Daddy?” she asked quietly.
“You’ll have to leave them for now but don’t worry, they’ll be okay.”
Lucy nodded slowly, a few more tears slipped down her pale, unblemished cheeks. I smiled slightly at her before rising to my feet and turning towards the door, holding out my hand beside me. Her small hand slipped into mine and we walked out the door together.
End Flashback
I sighed at the memory. The children were always the hardest souls to take, even those that had been trapped in their body for as long as Lucy had been. I never knew where they went, the souls I took, I just took them into Limbo then they met up with the guardian, their guide I guess, who would take them through the ghostly roads to wherever they were meant to be. I had always wondered what was on the other side, I guess my job was also to make sure they didn’t get lost, lost souls turned to vengeful spirits, which meant they could not only stop other souls from reaching...the other side but if there for long enough they could start to effect our world too...
Where do you think all these ‘ghostly experiences’ come from?
Gerard called me again later that day...
Flashback
I waved bye to Lucy as she walked away with the woman who had been deemed as her guide. She took one last look at me before heading off down the seemingly never-ending roads of the ghostly plain.
I glanced at my watch. I was meant to be collecting my next soul, Mikey, in 40 minutes. So I needed to go find him, my guess was home but Gerard had been pretty adamant on keeping him safe so I had to try and find him. Then I heard it, someone chanting and I knew, Gerard was calling me to him once again.
“What?” I asked, appearing in the basement next to him. He snapped round, jumping slightly.
“Take me.” He said bluntly after a moment or two.
“What?” I asked, giving him a disbelieving look.
“Take me.” He repeated. “Leave Mikey here, alive and take me with you instead. You can do that right?”
“Yes but...Gerard...do you understand what your doing? I mean really.”
Gerard looked directly at me. I could see tears glistening in his eyes. “Look he’s my little brother. I’m meant to protect him, to look after him...be, you know, the big brother.”
“Well...just as long as you’re sure.” He nodded forcefully. “I am.”
“Okay, but just a warning this is gonna hurt like hell. Mikey’s death was scheduled to happen but for that to be changed, I’m going to have to take your soul...from you living body.” Gerard took a shuddering breath, the fear rolling off of him in waves. “Just do it.”
I sighed before taking a step back from him and holding my hand out before me. Gerard gasped as his body tensed, and then he screamed. I closed my eyes for a moment but kept going. He took some shuddering breaths and tensed again before crying out in agony. Then the door at the top of the stairs swung open and Mikey ran down, taking the steps two at a time. “Gee! class=GramE>What the hell?!” Then he spotted us, his time had not yet passed so he could see me too. “Get away from him!!” He said, running at me.
“MIKEY! NO!!” Gerard yelled, throwing an arm backwards at him to stop him but Mikey didn’t listen. Mikey charged at me, throwing me into the wall and pinning me there. Immediately my connection was broken and Gerard collapsed to the floor.
“What the hell were you doing to my brother?!” Mikey yelled in my face. I stared him down. “Why don’t you ask him?” I asked. Mikey glanced back at his brother before loosening his grip on me as he saw Gerard clutching at his chest trying to force himself back to his feet. “Gee? What’s she talking about?” Did I forget to mention I took female form?
“Mikey, please. Just go back upstairs and everything will be fine.” Gerard told him, struggling to speak as tears and pain began to wreak havoc on his voice. “Gerard...please...” Mikey fully let go of me then and went to his brother’s side. “Please tell me your not about to do something stupid...?”
“I...I can’t...I can’t tell you that Mikers...” The tears fully took over then and Gerard knees buckled and Mikey sunk down with him, his arms around his brother as he began to cry as well. I stood watching the two brothers for a minute or two before glancing at my watch. 25 minutes before one of them had to be dead...
“Mikey...please...” Gerard finally calmed down enough to speak. “Just go upstairs and stay there, okay? Everything will be fine.”
“I can’t leave you Gee...I just can’t do it.” Mikey gripped his brother fiercely, holding on like a limpet to a rock. “Mikey, I love you okay? You’re my brother...I’m doing this to protect you so please...just go.”
“Protect me from what Gee?!” Mikey looked his brother directly in the eye.
“From...death...” Gerard said it so quietly I had to strain to hear it. Suddenly Mikey froze. “What?”
“From death Mikey. I had another of those nightmares. You died; right in front of me...I couldn’t let it come true, not like the other ones...”
“Other ones...? Whoa! What? You mean those ones when we were kids? Like when we were kids...and I fell out of the tree...and when the bus crashed?” Gerard nodded. “Gerard! No! I can’t let you do this! Don’t be so stupid okay?! I love you but if it’s my time to go then there’s nothing you can do about it!”
“But there is Mikey!” Gerard said, sitting up and taking his brother’s face into his hands. “Me for you. class=GramE>A simple trade.” Mikey began shaking his head furiously, the tears pouring down his face. “No! Gee! No! No! No!”
“Mikey, Mikey, Mikey.” Gerard calmed him slightly. “I’m the big brother. Just let me do my job. Let me protect you.” Gerard looked towards me and nodded ever so slightly. “I’m sorry.” I whispered, before holding out my hand before me and Gerard tensed, arching his back in pain. His head in his brother’s lap as he writhed in pain. “Gerard...” Mikey sobbed as he held his brother to him tightly.
